  • In this how to video I show you how wireless Apple CarPlay works on a new Subaru. Now that all Subarus are moving over to the larger touch screen display, this video will be relevant for anyone with a new Subaru. The Subaru Outback first received wireless Apple CarPlay in 2023 along with the 2023 Subaru Ascent, 2024 Crosstrek, and now for 2025 the Subaru Forester will have wireless Apple CarPlay. Many of the details in this video also apply to older generation Subarus that required plug in Apple CarPlay with your USB cable.

I love it too except I keep wondering why Subaru chose to keep an empty spot on the right side of the Home Button. I mean, why not add another commonly-used shortcut button there instead of leaving it blank? Actually, I wish Subaru would give us the ability to customize whatever we wanted to have in the persistent toolbar. Oh well, maybe next update! A guy can dream.

Word of warning: if you get an incoming FaceTime call, don’t answer it using CarPlay. Doing so will crash CarPlay and you’ll have to turn off the engine and restart everything. My dealer says this is a known problem and is hoping it will be included in the next software update.

Totally digressing here, but just wanted to mention that I had cut my arm washing my 2023 CT Premium. I didn't realize it but blood dripped down my arm onto the center section of my driver's cloth seat. I saw it and thought I'd never be able to remove this blood stain. All I had with me at the car wash was a spray bottle of interior protectant. I sprayed it on the stain not expecting it to work, but I was amazed to see that I was able to remove the blood stain without a trace, with a terrycloth cloth. I couldn't believe it! I was thinking that maybe Subaru treats it seats with some sort chemical that allows you to easily clean them? I was wondering if you knew anything about that? Maybe I'm exaggerating, but I just feel that Subaru had my back again, along with never failing me when I needed to go somewhere. 😎👍

Hi! Thank you for the video. We bought a 2023 Forester Touring in October 2023, and we drive it a lot (we already have 17,500 miles on it). One thing that is driving us crazy is CarPlay. We both have iPhones and use cords to connect to the car. The issue we frequently experience is getting Spotify and/or Pandora to work after initiating CarPlay. Here's a scenario: we're driving, have Maps going, listening to Spotify. We stop to get gas. I leave the phone plugged in while the engine is off. When I restart the car, Maps will turn right back on, but Spotify will not play. I can see it playing on my phone, but the car is not playing any sound from it (typically has a screen with the pause button, but it's not reactive to touch). Another scenario: we're driving, have Maps going, I want to switch from Spotify to Pandora. I use the touch screen to switch, and Pandora won't load. I use the phone to bring it up, but it still won't load. I use voice command to get Siri to play whatever channel on Pandora, and that works. I've brought this up to our dealership, and they weren't sure what's happening. Whenever my husband uses the hotspot while I'm driving, the system says it's up to date. Any thoughts on this?

The lastest software update. Take your car to any Subaru store and they can complete it. Reference TSB: 15-305-22R Revised 2/22/24 to include 23/24 model year. Subaru frequently sends out updates for various models/years so it’s likely your advisor won’t be familiar with it off hand. They may also try to charge you to complete unless you’re experiencing an issue with your infotainment display and your car is still within warranty. So if you’re experiencing any issues with wireless CarPlay connection, slow speeds, etc, it’s worth mentioning.

I have seen many articles lately about car manufacturers using (and in some cases) sharing customer information with third parties from their iPhones when logged into Carplay. Also, since your phone is essentially mirrored when using CarPlay, what about the possibility of sensitive information such as passwords on your phone being accessed or hacked in CarPlay? When I do that the radio or whatever is on stops working. Can't figure out what causes this. Is it the settings on my iphone? Is it the settings in the vehicle? Can’t figure it out. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It’s a CarPlay issue. If you open an app that has embedded videos, it will switch over to CarPlay. Happens a lot when I’m driving my wife’s car and she next to me looking at Facebook or other websites on her phone that’s connected to the car.

I have a 2023 Forester Wilderness as well and have had the same issue with Android CarPlay. It may be the USB cord. I know with trying 2-3 different cords, it seemed like it might not be the cord. When I switched to an "Anker" brand USB cord, it stayed connected and so far, no issues. Heard others recommend this brand too. Get the 3' cord as I read the shorter the cord, it just works better. Hope that helps.

I have a 2023 Forester Wilderness and the Android Carplay is a plug in, not wireless. It keeps disconnecting and I don't know a fix.
I've had the dealership update the Infotainment center and I don't think it's the connection cable. I've tried a couple. My phone shows it's connected, the infotainment center just doesn't display the app at times?! 🤷 It's the only gripe I have with Subaru.

Thanks Alex. It may be the phone cord. Been hearing owners say to try Anker USB cords. I bought a couple. Haven't had any issues since. It's weird. Maybe these systems are just sensitive? Maybe Subaru more than others? I hear people with other vehicle brands experience similar issues so, idk. As long as it's working now, I'm happy.

@@lisapropper3474 ok, so your car allows for wireless connection. No need for the cable. It’s good that you’ve been able to connect someone else’s device because that eliminates the car as a source of the issue. Also, you won’t be able to use Bluetooth and CarPlay at the same time. You would use one or the other. I would delete your phone from the device list in the car and then try to reconnect. Be sure to select CarPlay when it reconnects. I have a HUGE problem with carplay in my 2022 outback. Every single time I end a phone call, the car immediately starts playing the radio. WTF? I will be listening to a podcast using carplay, pause the podcast, make a phone call, and when the call ends suddenly the car radio is blasting at high volume. I can't figure out how to stop this from happening. There is no off switch for the radio so there doesn't seem to be any way to tell the car to quit doing this. It's absolutely horrible behavior. The car seems to do the same thing when it's connected through bluetooth as well, which tells me this is a big problem with the outback that it can't remember that no audio source was playing when the call was started so it just picks the first source (radio) and starts playing it when any call is finished. Horrible defect.

Alex…Subaru’s Starlink w Apple Car play…SUCKS!! I have the most updated system software, yet, it is SO buggy!!! I constantly drop car play, or it constantly switches my phone audio input from CarPlay to iPhone, so no have to mess with my phone while driving if I want to fix it and not loose the call. CarPlay randomly disconnects from phones (happens with multiple phones) and it won’t come back on for several minutes. It’s distracting when driving, especially when following gps directions. Starlink/ wireless
