Great video.... I'm a manager at a Subaru dealership, and we train all of our salespeople to go over 90% of these features to the customer during our delivery process. You don't know how many times we hear people say " I had the same radio in my last Subaru but the salesperson at the last dealership didn't tell us any of these things." Our average delivery process takes anywhere between 45 minutes and an hour. Our guys and girls go over EVERYTHING with our customers. We even call them 2 weeks later to follow up to see if they have any other questions and to set up a "re delivery" on the cars if they want to. Most customers do not come in for a refresh on the buttons, but we normally get like 3 or 4 a month come back so we can go over a few things with them.
I’m a salesman for a Subaru dealership that my family owns. We set every single customer up for our redelivery. Great tool for customers to be able to use, especially after they’ve driven it and come up with more questions.
Im a subaru sales guy we go over the cars with customers everytime and the "love encore" or re delivery 2 weeks later we offer them a 25$ gas card and about 75% of them come back.
Going through everything on delivery was a waste of my time and I already knew more than the salesperson did for my model and trim. Might be uncommon for your typical buyer but was pretty frustrating as they "had to go through the motions". I let them take up ten minutes of my time before politely told them to let me drive home and I'll figure it out later.
Here's a trick I discovered. Say you're sitting at a red light, ASS has shut off the motor and AVH is holding the brake on. You see the light is about to change and you want the engine to start ahead of tapping the gas (which also releases AVH). Just give the steering wheel a little left/right shake. It will trigger the engine to start but still keep AVH engaged. Especially useful for those XT owners who want a quick launch from the light. 😏
Interesting video. Does Android Auto allow addition of large icons (Spotify, etc.) to the touch screen? All I see is a row of small icons when I open the Android Auto app. The larger icons would be much better to use. (Legacy Limited w/Nav, 2022)
I want to comment on why the recirculation mode is important. In hot weather when using the air conditioner you definitely want to recirculate the air in the cabin. The air conditioner doesn't have to work as hard and it might even prevent it from freezing up in humid conditions. More importantly, in cold weather you do NOT want to recirculate the air. The windows will begin to condensate due to the warmth in the car and your warm exhalation of breath. Fresh air will prevent this from occurring. The next time you see a car with the windows fogged up you will know why.
Using the recirc mode when the car is cold, will get the cabin up to temperature faster than vent mode. Once the car is somewhat warm you can then switch to vent mode to prevent window fogging.
When are they going to allow 2021 outback owners to update to the new climate control and heated seats configuration of the new outback? Hope it is happening and soon. Thank you in advance for your response.

Hi Alex, I'm waiting to take possession of my new Outback. I've been watching many videos and find yours by far the most informative. Thank you for your posts sir.
Great video as usual. 2 questions - if you set your AC on/off to recirculate, how do you turn the AC on or off? And how do you change the display in between the speedometer and the tach?
I have the same questions as others have commented. Why is there not a recirculate button and A/C options on the bottom of the screen for easy access. I've often hit the recirculate when driving through very dusty conditions. Same with the redundant heated seats settings on my 2020 Outback. There are too many distractions from driving to do something that should be simple. Hope Subaru recognizes and makes appropriate fixes. All the safety features can't make up for all the distracting touch screen motions. I have an Outback and I think the Forester has a much better interface.
I agree. It is dangerously distracting sometimes to try to monkey with the settings on the touchscreen while driving. Unfortunately, the only workaround I have is to move from my 2023 Outback to the 2017 Outback I passed down to my daughter where these are all still easy to use buttons.
I agree. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should. These screen features are great if you’re the passenger however, they become a liability if you drive alone. Any features that are commonly accessed while driving should be relegated to physical buttons and dials for the sake of safety. Possibly moved to the steering wheel area like the media controls already are.

Since several people reading these comments are new to Subaru, it's worth mentioning the "secret" button on the rear hatch to unlock your vehicle without the key. I know you've got a separate video for this somewhere, but it's worth mentioning. It's not obvious, and not everyone is prepared to read a 600 page owner's manual!
Well done as usual Alex! I will add two related "secrets" working on both my MY 2023 Outback Touring and on my son's MY 2022 Outback Touring. 1. Press and hold the "warmer" and "cooler" buttons on the passenger side and tap the "tune" knob twice, then release everything. The display will go into the "dealer" mode and show various info, of which I find the voltage useful. 2. If you do the above, but tap the "tune" knob six times instead of two, you will get even more info. Also, regarding our "favourite" Auto Start Stop: I find it much less intrusive than I thought it would be. It doesn't stop the engine when the wheels are turned a bit, and any movement of the brake pedal re-activates the engine. I rarely switch it off now.
Great tips, Alex! I can’t wait to show Hubby all I learned today! Thank you so much for helping us learn to unlock the wonderful features of our Subaru Outback and for information on all Subaru vehicles. Many Blessings!
Hi Alex, a couple of questions. 1. On the auto brake hold, is that something that's new on the 2023 models? I've tried adding it to the screen on my 2022 OBP but the auto brake hold doesn't come up on the list of features available to create the shortcut. 2. Early on, when you first reviewed the changes to the 11.5" screen, you mentioned the possibility of an update for the 2020-2022 models. I'd love to have the seat controls on the home screen like that as opposed to buried a layer deep in the menu system. Can you confirm whether or not this is the case? Thanks.
@@FMC1239 You can get an update now! It will bring most of the settings to your 22 subaru, unfotuanetely it doesn't fix android auto using half portion of the screen ;(
Go to your dealer, tell them your radio is acting up and they will do the 2023 upgrade for your radio free of charge. My dealership told me that and that’s how I got mine done
Hey Alex not sure if you've mentioned this but I found this out by accident, but when your stopped at a light with your foot on the brake, you can turn the cruise control on, and then when you press down or up on the set or resume set speed, it'll do a temporary hold on the breaks like the AVH, you can even set your speed while your foot is on the break, so when you are stopped you can set your speed you want without having to drive and set it
Aside from changing the widgets - there seems to be “empty” screens on the top of the display when swiping the screen to the left. Is there anyway to customize those?
Hi Alex, I sometimes find the Apple car play wireless connection not reliable. Is there a way to disable it and connect through wire the old fashioned way in 2023 outback? Thank you in advance!
My 2009 Forester was my first car to have the rear washer supplied by the front reservoir. One of the many improvements over my older Hyundai! My following 2014 and 2019 Foresters, and my '22 Outback Wilderness are the same. I'm sure yours is too.
Like the 2022 Outback Wagon Touring. Now I'm going to ask you if you know how or when Subaru plans on software updates to the new 2023 screen app options for late model such as the 2022 outback wagon touring. Keep up these good info RUclips videos. We're still figuring out the new wagon and the features since October purchase.
Yes, an update would be nice because I have to "click" to get to a second screen to change the heated seat settings. On this video they are at the bottom of the main screen
One thing I discovered with Apple CarPlay, if you have a VPN on your phone, CarPlay will disconnect. It took me ages to work that out, even the Subaru dealer didn't know about it when I got the car serviced. They just blamed the cable. Now if only I could get the firmware to update on the display, I'd be really happy.
Omg thank you for sharing this. I had no idea. I kept thinking it was my cable or the software in the unit itself since people always complain about this. I was also told that bluetooth will disconnect CarPlay as well, but sometimes it would still disconnect even with bluetooth off so it's good to know that VPN can affect it as well!
You may want to regularly check for updates to both your phone’s software and CarPlay/SUV’s firmware. Manufacturers may release patches that improve compatibility over time. First, automakers like Subaru play a crucial role in pushing out firmware updates designed to enhance CarPlay compatibility with various applications, including VPNs. These updates can optimize the vehicle’s network handling capabilities and ensure greater stability during internet traffic rerouting. Concurrently, Apple frequently releases updates to its iOS, and keeping your device updated can significantly improve compatibility, as these updates often include bug fixes related to CarPlay and enhance the overall stability of the operating system. Furthermore, VPN providers can contribute to resolving these issues by refining their software. This effort might include developing optimized data encryption protocols that minimize latency and disruptions to CarPlay connections. Additionally, implementing adaptive bandwidth management could be beneficial, allowing VPN solutions to automatically adjust bandwidth use based on connection demands-prioritizing CarPlay services when needed. Introducing split tunneling features in VPN technology also holds promise for a solution. This allows users to designate which applications utilize the VPN; therefore, if the VPN app can be set to exclude CarPlay from its encrypted tunnel, it would effectively resolve any disconnect issues while still providing security for other applications being used.
Thanks for these tips. I've watched a number of your videos and found them helpful. One question, what are your thoughts on updating software at home vs taking to the dealer? My display looks different than this on my 21 Outback (I really want that shortcut to auto hold) and not sure if I should try to update myself. If it's safe to do so, could you post a video showing the process? Thanks!
1) the update you see for the 2023 models hasn't rolled out to earlier cars (and no word if it ever will...) 2) Updating at home is fine, just expect to idle for a while, if you have a good wifi signal were ever you park, or a garage with wifi, then easy, (just open the garage door to let fumes out). If not, I used my phone hot spot and it worked fine. 3) For auto hold, I've found setting cruise control while stopped will put the car into auto hold. Sometimes, I'll do that instead of clicking through the display. This way I enable it right from the steering wheel, when it's time to go, I turn it off and if I forget, cruise is adaptive so it won't slam into the car in front.
For auto hold, instead of the specific setting (which my car doesn't have the home screen button for), setting cruise when completely stopped will also enable auto-hold. Sometimes if I'm at a long light or stuck at a train, I'll set cruise to 20mph, activating auto-hold. When it's time to go, I turn it off. If I happen to forget and hit gas first, cruise is adaptive so it won't speed into a car in front of me, or because it's only set to 20mph, it's not like I'm going to get very far.
@@alexpmo You said that the auto hold needs to be turned on every time but in my 23 Ascent thats not the case. I turned it on in settings and its been on ever since. I live in Canada, so I wonder if there is some sort of upgrade or difference? Thanks for the video tips, I subscribed as this is my first Subaru.

Very informative stuff. Thank you. I have a 2023 Outback Premier XT. Picked it up Oct 22 and have had it into the shop almost every month for issues. After the new software came out this past spring they installed the newest OS / firmware. Far more probs now. Specifically with the driver recognition and seat / mirror position recall. When we first picked up the car, the facial recognition auto set both the mirrors and the seat for each profile. Now it only does it with the manual buttons on the drivers door. Annoying. And what is far more annoying is the drivers side mirror no longer repositions for reverse. This is something that my new cars have done for the past 25 + years. To boot, the drivers side is flat and not convexed so it is impossible to have one single position for both forward and reverse. Reading a lot of contradictory articles and Dealership is giving me nothing but nonsense. Curious as to what your thoughts may be. Also, I have been told that the remotes can be set to recall each profile but can't find anything conclusive on that either. Cheers.

Appreciate this type of content, but also wouldn’t mind some general updates on where things stand with trying to get a Subaru here in 2023. I have heard of people with outstanding orders going back to early last fall even for those vehicles being built in Indiana…delivery dates keep getting bumped month after month. What are the factors causing these delays, and what does the outlook look like going forward…continued delays or expected improvement?
Can't speak for others, but I ordered an Outback Onyx in mid January and recently picked it up at the Anchorage dealership. Took about 3-1/2 months, earlier than the anticipated 4-6 month wait when ordered. Looks to me like availability times are improving.

Great videos. Just bought a 2023 Outback touring. The rear seat chime will NOT stop with the dogs in the back even if you shut off the rear seat reminder. Super annoying Subaru would do this. I had to buy fake seatbelt clips to solve the issue. Subaru thinks of all the things but this seatbelt chime in the rear is absurd. If you have a solution for the people this would make for a good video.
We had a ‘23 Onyx XT as a loaner. I have a service dog. She rides directly behind me, I put a solid board down, cut to fit, her cushion on that. We got the chime periodically when she shifted her position. We’ve ordered our own ‘24 Onyx XT, simply going to fasten the seat belt, as she has her own clip to hold her in her travel harness.
It’s easy to turn off the seat belt chiming. Jut put your car in accessory mode (click your start button once and don’t hold it down) then click and release the drivers seat belt 20 times in 30 seconds and it’s done. That said you should always wear a seat belt when driving. If you ever disconnect your cars battery you’ll will need to redo do the process.

How do you get out of dealer mode and revert back to normal mode???
@@CletusLeonardLee Just press the Car button or the General button on the screen.
Do you worry the auto stop start feature may lead to premature starter wear? I just bought one and don’t feel comfortable with it
@@katsm-wo9704 Dont like it, shut it off everytime I drive.
Thanks for the info - I was wondering if there was a way to see the battery voltage. We had been having issues with battery drain
Great tips, Alex! I can’t wait to show Hubby all I learned today! Thank you so much for helping us learn to unlock the wonderful features of our Subaru Outback and for information on all Subaru vehicles. Many Blessings!
Thanks!
Thank you Lisa!
Any information on how to prevent driving data from being uploaded?
Or a way to disable or remove the satellite communication module?
Hi Alex, a couple of questions.
1. On the auto brake hold, is that something that's new on the 2023 models? I've tried adding it to the screen on my 2022 OBP but the auto brake hold doesn't come up on the list of features available to create the shortcut.
2. Early on, when you first reviewed the changes to the 11.5" screen, you mentioned the possibility of an update for the 2020-2022 models. I'd love to have the seat controls on the home screen like that as opposed to buried a layer deep in the menu system. Can you confirm whether or not this is the case? Thanks.
The AVH on the main screen is 23 only for now. It has been said the 23 update will come to the 22 at some point this year with some limitations.
Thanks Fred. The main thing I'd love to see on that home screen is the seat heat/ventilation controls. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
@@Intrepid175a I agree...I have a 2021...I hope those options show up this year as well...fingers crossed...
Hey Alex not sure if you've mentioned this but I found this out by accident, but when your stopped at a light with your foot on the brake, you can turn the cruise control on, and then when you press down or up on the set or resume set speed, it'll do a temporary hold on the breaks like the AVH, you can even set your speed while your foot is on the break, so when you are stopped you can set your speed you want without having to drive and set it
Thanks for sharing! I also found that out recently and made a youtube short about it a couple months ago. Such a neat feature!

How to turn on door chimes and seat belt warning
Aside from changing the widgets - there seems to be “empty” screens on the top of the display when swiping the screen to the left. Is there anyway to customize those?
Hi Alex, I sometimes find the Apple car play wireless connection not reliable. Is there a way to disable it and connect through wire the old fashioned way in 2023 outback? Thank you in advance!
yep, just disconnect your bluetooth/delete the device from your car and then connect with your USB charging cable instead.
I just started working at Subaru. Yes I subscribed lol good videos man
Thanks Cole! Hopefully this helps you learn all you need to know about them. Best of luck in your journey with Subaru!
Washer fluid for the rear wiper on a 2023 Outback, does it have an individual supply or use fluid from the front reservoir?
My 2009 Forester was my first car to have the rear washer supplied by the front reservoir. One of the many improvements over my older Hyundai! My following 2014 and 2019 Foresters, and my '22 Outback Wilderness are the same. I'm sure yours is too.
Like the 2022 Outback Wagon Touring.
Now I'm going to ask you if you know how or when Subaru plans on software updates to the new 2023 screen app options for late model such as the 2022 outback wagon touring. Keep up these good info RUclips videos. We're still figuring out the new wagon and the features since October purchase.
I have seen other posts suggesting that 2020-2022 systems will NOT be updated to the new 2023 layout.
@@grcigar9911 Subaru will most likely upgrade for a fee. No change in operating software. Like to see it happen to keep technology options upgraded.
Yes, an update would be nice because I have to "click" to get to a second screen to change the heated seat settings. On this video they are at the bottom of the main screen
Wireless car play for ‘23 thats nice feature given how hard it is to plug in the usb to the subaru’s counsole hub which is another feature to fix
You can also change these widgets by holding them for about 1.5 seconds and releasing. It open the same box as what you see at 4:53
I found that out later! Thanks
Start/stop feature use with AVH activated tends to produce a rougher start on my 2020
Alex, how do you turn off the economy mode on a 23 outback turbo????

I wish you could customise the on/off button, which I think most people never use. I would like to have both recirculate and a/c buttons instead.
You would think, but my wife loves to hit that button 😂. Then I wonder why I’m so warm when I get back in the car after she drives it.
How do you get the screen to show navigation with android phone
Thanks for these tips. I've watched a number of your videos and found them helpful. One question, what are your thoughts on updating software at home vs taking to the dealer? My display looks different than this on my 21 Outback (I really want that shortcut to auto hold) and not sure if I should try to update myself. If it's safe to do so, could you post a video showing the process? Thanks!
1) the update you see for the 2023 models hasn't rolled out to earlier cars (and no word if it ever will...)
2) Updating at home is fine, just expect to idle for a while, if you have a good wifi signal were ever you park, or a garage with wifi, then easy, (just open the garage door to let fumes out).
If I happen to forget and hit gas first, cruise is adaptive so it won't speed into a car in front of me, or because it's only set to 20mph, it's not like I'm going to get very far.
yep, that's a good work around and actually quicker than using the touch screen
@@alexpmo You said that the auto hold needs to be turned on every time but in my 23 Ascent thats not the case. I turned it on in settings and its been on ever since. I live in Canada, so I wonder if there is some sort of upgrade or difference? Thanks for the video tips, I subscribed as this is my first Subaru.
It's always on by default. If you turn it off, it will be turn back on when you start the car.
Thank You Alex, your videos have been so helpful for me with my new 2023 WRX, only today i altered the top of screen widgets. Has Subaru released a software upgrade for 2022 Outback Touring that lets you set the seat warmer without going to multiple screens?
I have seen other posts suggesting that 2020-2022 systems will NOT be updated to the new 2023 layout.
@GR Cigar the giga thread I follow on outback software updates has no mention of that. Who said this?
@@JungleLoveOeOeO read in to how the cpu chip in the 23 is faster based on data dumps. Subaru also removed wifi updates on the 23. The security on the os seams to be higher on the 23... i hope they do a ccu recall on the 2020 to 2022...

How do you get the AVH shortcut on the screen? I do not see that option in my 2020 Outback.

Great video! I would like more info on the Favorite Widgets. Everyone video we have seen just changed 3 widgets. but there are additional pages that you can arrow to the left and right but they are blank and we are not able to add additional widgets. What would those pages be used for?
How’d you get the “Display Off” option/shortcut on your screen? I don’t see any options for it in the shortcuts menu and it’s not natively on my screen, thx for the awesome video!
Outback needs a default driver so when it fails (often) to recognize you, you won’t have to go through several screens to rescan driver.
We have the same problem. Our dealer showed a sort of shortcut. Open and shut the drivers door for a new scan.

Alex when your are in vehicle hold, does your brake lights come on when you are stopped & foot is not on the brake ? Don't want to get hit from behind if brake lights aren't on.
Cheers.
How do you shut the radio off, without shutting the display off?

Hello Alex. How do you add AVH to your home screen? Thanks for sharing all the great tips :)
Hey! This part of a software update for the Outback. Reference TSB: 15-305-22R when you go into your Subaru service dept. The advisor likely won’t be familiar with it off-hand because Subaru sends out multiple updates but they can look it up for you. 2020-2024 now have the ability to have the AVH shortcut

Alex, so glad that you're still on I haven't been able to find you! I have the 2021 Subaru Forester and I've had six dead batteries since I purchased a car new 8/2021. I called Subaru about the software upgrade I heard was part of a class settlement and then I was not entitled to it because my Subaru was not included in the class action group. AVH is such a great feature…it’s the ONLY feature that has stopped me from buying a Crosstrek.

Love the tips, I have a ‘22 OBW and the volume button shuts off the whole head unit. How do I create that display off app so I can turn off the display and not radio?
Unfortunately, the shortcut app for the display off also shuts off the radio. The shortcut should be on your second screen if you still want to use it. You'll just have to swipe over from the home screen if that makes sense.
@@alexpmo thanks and booo 😂 I’ve seen the shortcut on the newer cars but I don’t have it on mine snd can’t find how to add it. I like leaving the audio on for like audio books while the screen is off, I hate having to go into menus to do simple stuff.

Great videos! I somehow deleted the AVH button from my widgets. Any idea how to get it back?
Hi Alex, great info. Question I get foggy windows inside here in the NE. Is there a way stop this without turning on the defrost, it effects heat system

Thanks for watching! Try turning on the A/C setting. When blowing warm air, this should dehumidify the air as it's coming out.
With the latest software update for the Infotainment System you now get Automatic Hold function on the Infotainment screen just to the left of the Auto Start Stop Button. This is more convenient than scrolling screens or dragging the icon to the main screen.
Alex, your videos have taught me a lot, but 1 item I saw nothing about. I have a 2020 Outback and an Android phone. Everything you commented about using the phone and GPS, the screen is full. Did you know that if you use an Android phone, the maps are very small, about 3 x 8. I had to contact Subaru Customer service to find that that's normal. They have no fix for the problem.
Keep up the good work.

You can also change widgets by click & hold the widget you want to change. All available widgets will then pop up.
This was helpful. I could use help with TomTom.
