Nice comparison. The difference between the towing capacities with the smaller models was probably due to the vehicles having the same total cargo capacity but one vehicle weighed more than the other. What follows isn't so much about Subaru as about considerations about trailers, that will help you select what model to get. Having a trailer gives you a major boost in cargo capacity, don't skimp but don't over buy. Spend time learning how to back the thing up. Towing is a bit complicated and while capacity of "X" pounds is convenient it is misleading since it doesn't deal with enough details. Vehicles, transmissions, tires, hitches and axles are all rated on how much load they can carry. In the case of a tow vehicle that includes the weight of the vehicle, its passengers, cargo and whatever is on the tongue. Some trim levels have a transmission cooler which ups the towing capacity. Having brakes on the trailer can also improve capacity. For instance the Ascent with Touring and above trim has a transmission cooler and is rated at 5,000 lbs. if the trailer has brakes. If it doesn't then the capacity is much less. The basic idea is that each thing, tow vehicle, trailer, whatever, has a capacity that shouldn't be exceeded. The tow vehicle has a maximum cargo capacity, the hitch has a maximum load capacity as does the trailer. If everything is balanced out you maximize your capacity with out overloading anything. Here's an example, all weights are American. Vehicle Calculation 1. Vehicle cargo capacity is 1000; 2. It has a class 3 hitch with a 800 max tongue weight; 3. Driver is 200; 4. Passenger is 150; 5. Cargo in the vehicle is 200; 6 Total is 550, 450 left over Tongue Calculation 1. Maximum load on the tongue is 1,000 - 550 = 450; 2. The tongue is rated at 800 ( 2 above) so we are good so far. Trailer Calculation 1. Recommended tongue load 10% of trailer weight; 2. So 450 = 10% of trailer at most; 3, Trailer max is 10 x 450 = 4500; 4. A single axle trailer normally has wheels and an axle rated at a maximum of around 3750, it maybe less so check that tag; 5. Lets assume the trailer weighs 1000; 6. 3750 - 1000 = 2750 for cargo; 7. If you want to go higher then you either need need more axles and tires or heavier duty stuff. Whatever you get will weigh more which lowers how much cargo can go in since the tow vehicle has a limit as well. Essentially the emptier the trailer the bigger it can be; With a single axle normal trailer and everything balanced nicely you could have about 2750 in the 1000 trailer for about 375 on the tongue. We had a max of 450 so looks good. Now lets think about the transmission and brakes. Both are designed to move the vehicle around with a load of 1000 in cargo. We have 550 interior cargo + ( 1000 + 2750 ) trailer cargo = 4300. Yes the trailer wheels and axle are carrying much of the weight but the vehicle is towing and stopping the whole shebang. That's why in this setup you need a transmission cooler and brakes on the trailer. Something to consider. Any cargo in the vehicle is calculated 1 for 1. So for a 1000 total and 550 in the vehicle you have 450 left. If some of that is moved to the trailer then if properly balanced its 10 to 1. In the above example if we move the 200 in vehicle cargo to the trailer then vehicle load is 350 and So the tongue can carry an extra 200. Using the 10% rule the maximum trailer weight, including cargo just went up by 2000. We added 200 to the trailer so we have a net gain of 1800. That doesn't mean the trailer capacity went up, it means you could use a trailer with larger capacity. Balancing the trailer load as well as balancing the tow vehicle, trailer combination are both good things to do.
Great video Alex! The big reason why I opted for the 2023 Forester wilderness was the smaller display. I will be surprised if the 2020 doesn’t have the bigger display. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻
I have the 21 premium out back. Love everything about it. The comfortable ride, the eye sights, the quick oil change and space. Im thinking about trading it for the 23 ascent onyx edition 😊
I prefer the tactical buttons and smaller screen. I do like the idea of wireless plug in. I would like a Crosstrek with a 2.5 turbo with a 6 speed manual. That would be cool.
Thanks Matt Luv the reviews. I own the 2024 crosstrek 2.0X Real happy with it, I dont need much boot space and the 150 horsepower aint that bad, it does the speed limits just fine and is comfy on the freeway. Just wanted to throw you a big thanks as your review helped me decide on buying the car. I know you have a wide range of cars to give us your informed input and i appreciate that. I went from a 2012 hyundai ix35 so to me this car is a massive upgrade and I am a very happy subaru crosstrek 2.0X owner. Thanks Matt Keep up the good work

I’m currently looking at a Durango SRT 2019 that is $50,000. Surprisingly enough this new Subaru ascent has all the features that SUV has with a few more add-ons for half the price you got to be kidding me smh. Subaru was doing a really good job 👍🏾 14:18
Subaru has really stepped up their game in recent years. Been looking at the Forester Wilderness to replace my aging 2005 Ford Taurus. Given vehicle prices today, the Subaru Forester Wilderness is at a great price with great features, and ground clearance needed in snow country...although I do just fine with my Taurus and just having front wheel drive, the Subaru AWD system would be an added bonus. Nice that Subaru hasn't gone all turbo charged engines, and hopefully they never do...The "Offroad", or "Adventure" version of the Toyota RAV-4 is over $40k. Subaru's Forester Wilderness is $5k less, and seems like the better AWD system as well.
P. S. On a more serious note, if the Forester Wilderness came with a 6-speed manual, it would become the go-to vehicle for crossover enthusiasts. It would be the vehicle for 90% of drivers for 90% of the time…
WE just traded up to the 2023 Ascent Limited 8 Passenger in anticipation of our third grandchild. The seating is tight with two car seats in the third row, but we are very happy with the vehicle. This is our 6th Subaru, started driving the Outbacks in 1998 and traded in our 2019 OUtback for the Ascent. You won't be disappointed with the vehicles.
Our Ascent Limited is Awesome, it’s one of the best Vehicles we have owned, very easy drive ability, layout is super, power is very good, And the ride is really, really good. The Hamon Cardin (SP) Stereo is outstanding! It is a very good looking Car as well!
On my second Forester (2016 and 2021). Looked hard at the Outback but getting in and out its much lower, more sedan based. I am the exception as I don't want anything in my car so I always buy the base model which never gets looked at or reviewed. Trust me its great having way less to break! Friends with fully loaded cars spend way more than I do to buy them and maintain them.
@@alexpmo I was offered a fully loaded Outback Touring non turbo model that is in stock at the dealership in the Cosmic Blue Pearl color. Should I get this over the Limited XT that should be arriving at the dealership at the end of this week? Both are around the same price. Is it worth it getting the turbo engine over the extra amenities that the touring offers? What would you recommend to a customer?
I have a new 2023 Outback Limited XT and on a recent 1,100 mile trip we achieved an indicated 29 MPG across Arkansas and Texas where the speed limit was 75 MPH. I’m pleased with that mileage. I’ll also report that the wireless Apple CarPlay worked flawlessly. My only complaint, it the lack of front parking sensors. Thanks for the thorough review Alex!
I love my 2018 Crosstrek 6MT. Such a fun, zippy car to drive, and I love the compact nature of it. The 6 speed has a great feel. It is however smaller than I need for some uses so I’ve been looking at the Forester Wilderness. Can you please do some trim level comparisons? Also any idea when the ‘24 Forester Wilderness will be available?
The Crosstrek is too small for me and the Ascent is way more than I need. My wife has an Outback, but I chose the Forester for its shorter length and taller cabin. I'm 6' 2" and the Forester fits me perfectly.
All of that research goes right out the window after you test drive them 😂 Prior to my purchase, I just KNEW I was a Forester girl! Well, my chosen car wasnt ready so I test drove an Outback to waste some time... and needless to say, I now drive a 2011 Outback 2.5i Limited 😂😂😂
You know it's too bad that sedans are indeed falling out of love. I'm curious how some of the more recent conversations go with sedan customers who are concerned about the "updated" side impact crash test ratings on IIHS. I'll take an Outback XT with the extra tech features in the Ascent, revert to the physical hvac controls and I'm sold. Bonus option is to have the eyesight cams as 24/7 surveillance with recorded footage able to be retrieved locally over usb.
You could have called the 24 crosstreks also the 2024 imprezas. There both literally identical from top to bottom. I been calling 24 crosstreks a lifted impreza
@@danielfair4675you are very correct. I had a 2023 Corolla Cross (Slowrolla) FWD which my husband hated. I knew acceleration was slow but didn’t realize that it was too slow to the point that it was difficult to enter the highway. Finally trade in for an Outback XT. I know Outback XT is significantly more expensive but worth every penny. I also have an 2017 Impreza, and I love that little car.
For us it was a balance of wants vs absolute no items. The no were simple. No turbo, no sunroof, no leather, and no subscription. Must was BSM. Ended up with a outback with option 13. Would of loved backup sensors ( i find them much more useful than the camera). The other factor was the larger fuel tank for better range. Do miss the higher seating position.
My wife’s chevy Camaro was totaled three weeks ago so we needed a car quickly. Not much on the used car market but extremely overpriced vehicles. Had been think about getting a outback xt for myself, so I had my wife test drive a crosstrek. She loved it. None available in black on the lot and 2.5 engine was probably three or four months away. They had a black premium on order already. No power or heated seats😪. They said it should be here in early September, we put a deposit down on it. Keeping our fingers crossed that it arrives sooner than later.
WEll, currently we are having some problems with logistics, the U.A.W. tantrums are effecting some of our venders and there is currently a steel shortage. We are trying to get caught up, but getting materials has been a problem. Since the covid plandemic the supply chain has been a mess.
@alexpmo Can we add front camera or 360 view to a forester premium or sport model? I test drove the wilderness model with the front camera feature. I liked this but do not need many of the wilderness features. We also take long highway trips and the wilderness model MPG is a downside. Also, can we get a limited or touring version with cloth seats (or vegan "leather"? (if yes, can it also add front or 360 camera) - I do not want leather seats. It is frustrating most/(all?) higher trim level vehicles only offer leather interior. Is the interior for any seats - vegan "leather"? I was told they "are pretty sure" it is for the wilderness.
Hello Alex, I've been systematically watching your videos as we are purchasing a 2024 Crosstrek Onyx. This will be our 3rd Subaru vehicle since 1999. And while watching this particular video I've got to say that my excitement for our new vehicle has dropped a smidge as we live in Canada and it gets rather cold up here during the winter months and the power lift gate on our 2015 Forester has been a godsend even if it's not cold out. Would it be possible for you to do a quick video on opening the lift gate on a 2024 Crosstrek. I can't seem to find any information on this. Thank you so much for your videos.
Great review! I wanted to review this before I went vehicle shopping. I’ve had jeep grand Cherokee‘s for quite some time and looking for something different. Leaning towards the outback and the Forrester I’m in my car a lot for work if I go with the outback I would be more inclined to go with the turbo. Thanks again!
I am interested in the Forester. My wife has a 2023 Premium which she enjoys. Two questions. 1- Can Forester Premium be ordered without a sun roof? I do not believe it can but wanted to ask. 2- Will the 2024 Forester be a continuation of the 2023 model? Read a view articles this may be the case. Thanks.
Very good comparison on these models - just wish you had touched briefly on the safety ratings. I have heard that Subarus have good safety ratings. Thanks.
Thank you! Here's a video I made covering the details on Subaru's safety: ruclips.net/video/4jo9zO05exo/видео.html This is applicable to all of the cars in the lineup
In the real world data, as in Death Rates in Cars, or the Insurance Claims Data, the Outback is stellar great, and the CrossTrek and Forester did well in their class. In the price and size, I cannot think of a car which is better than the Outback safety wise.
Just test drove the touring xt, what a splendid automobile it checks all the boxes, only thing I don't like is all the cladding, especially around the front grill.
Just got a 23’ Outback Wilderness and love it. Traded in my 20’ forester touring for my outback. I feel snug in the seats of my outback. I feel I sit higher in the my outback wilderness. First time owning a turbo engine. My question is I thought the Subaru Ascent only got a refresh I didn’t know it was a redesign?
I'm waiting for Subaru to adopt the 24 meter iMax screen for the dash, so I can REALLY take my eyes off the road while I'm navigating through heavy traffic. Replacing most of the tactile controls with touchscreens also helps distract drivers. Technology and road safety are growing increasingly mutually exclusive.
How do I turn off the automatic seat heat for the driver ? It always turns on automatically when the weather drops . I would like to have this feature only in the manual mode . I have a Forester 2021 E-Boxer .
A possible problem with the Forester.. I am taller (over 6 ft) and need (and like) a roomy, airy cabin, with good outward visibility (super important for safety!!).. The Subaru Foresters boxy shape, taller design, and bigger windows (for great visibility) seemed to be just what I was looking for. After further research, it looks like there is a MAJOR problem with the Forester's and the location of the safety monitoring devices - which are (unwisely) located at the top middle part of the windshield... These safety monitoring devices are now causing an UNSAFE large blind spot for taller drivers, who now have their outward vision blocked by these safety monitoring devices. Subaru needs to find another place to put these safety monitoring devices. Also notice the cabin lights/sunglasses holder also is placed in that area, limiting visibility even further. Plus I need the top part of the windshield for not only better/safer visibility, but to look out to see road signs, street signs, addresses, highway signs, see land marks, and just general outward visibility for driving enjoyment. I am surprised such a forward thinking company like Subaru could make such a major mistake that hurts safe driving.
Hi Alex, Very comprehensive video comparison. I gave a 2012 Outback. Just turned over 250,000 miles. It is starting to feel its age and I’m shopping. With the economy being what it is, I’m having to go older model to afford. I have a 3.6R although I don’t tow. I like the added power. Do you have any videos for comparison shopping used outback’s? I want to know if the 2018 3.6R I am looking at is the better year than another and why. There are a lot of 2019’s in my area which makes me wonder if people want to get rid of this year. Thanks
Great video but I had to laugh a little at "the outback gives off station wagon vibes..." and that's because it IS a station wagon (which I love), btw.
I bought a 2024 outback wilderness in april and just saw a different video about the crosrails built into to the roof rack and thought that was the coolest thing so i had to gocheck it out but was kinda disappointed to find mine are not that way but the rack it does have seems more stout than what i saw in the video
Why does the Outback offer an XT Turbo option but the Forester doesn't? I have had 2 Foresters and that was by far my biggest complaint. Simply underpowered.
LOVED your reviews! Ive been checking out different brands for my future cars, mostly Japanese cars. I wanted to ask do Subarus still have head gasket issues? Did they use different materials/parts for the engine? Thanks🎉
Bought a Forester, first new car, it's leaked oil from the timing belt cover since day one. Both the dealer and Subaru have refused to help. Dealer claimed it was normal oil burn, Subaru Customer Service was super rude and claimed I just made it up! The oil leak had caused excessive engine wear so it's not a good investment. I have to carry synthetic oil with me everywhere plus add it at almost every usage. Extra bother and expense, plus bad customer service equals buyers remorse.
I need a vehicle with good ground clearance. I've got certain physical challenges and a new car is warranted to accommodate my physical issues. Some Subaru vehicles made multiple lists that I have found. I pretty much have narrowed my selection down to Subaru and Hyundai due to customes with my condition reporting what they drive. What I need is to test drive and hopefully I can make a more informed decision. I also found out that Subarus have better resale value than Hyundai. The thing is I've never sat in a Subaru much less driven one. I have driven my brother's Santa Fe and I got in and out of that car without any pain. That was bloody fantastic! So it's definitely a contender. I just need the Subaru to do the same thing and maybe then I'll go that route because I like the practicality of the Subaru Forester and it's not flashy. I like that about it. It doesn't have to be flashy to look good and be a good car. That is a big draw for me.
The Forester is hands down the easiest Subaru for ingress/egress. I have chronic pain from a genetic condition, so this is a significant concern. The step-in is so perfect for people of nearly any height, and you don’t have to bend much at all. Good luck with your shopping!
If you're trying to compare Subaru SUVs, comment below with any questions you have and I'll do my best to answer!

Trailer Calculation
1. Recommended tongue load 10% of trailer weight;
2. So 450 = 10% of trailer at most;
3, Trailer max is 10 x 450 = 4500;
4. A single axle trailer normally has wheels and an axle rated at a maximum of around 3750, it maybe less so check that tag;
5. Lets assume the trailer weighs 1000;
6. 3750 - 1000 = 2750 for cargo;
7. If you want to go higher then you either need need more axles and tires or heavier duty stuff. Whatever you get will weigh more which lowers how much cargo can go in since the tow vehicle has a limit as well. Essentially the emptier the trailer the bigger it can be;
With a single axle normal trailer and everything balanced nicely you could have about 2750 in the 1000 trailer for about 375 on the tongue.
Thank you for this overview. Great job with voice over and transitions. One of the best car overview videos I've seen. Very pleasant to watch. :)
@@MsSpottedcow thank you for the compliment! :)
Great minds think alike
Unfortunately there is just not enough demand for manuals in North America to offer them.
Thanks Matt
Luv the reviews. I own the 2024 crosstrek 2.0X
Real happy with it, I dont need much boot space and the 150 horsepower aint that bad, it does the speed limits just fine and is comfy on the freeway.
Thanks Matt
Keep up the good work
Excellent video! Thank you for explaining the differences.
You’re welcome!
Had An Impreza, Loved It! Moved Up To A 15' Outback, Have Owned It 4 Yrs. I Car Camp, Use It Like A Truck, Demon In The Snow Couple Of Minor Problems, Will Buy Another One When This One Dies Only Have 123k On It,So It Will Be A While Plus It's Paid For ❤❤⛽⛽⛽
Alex, I love my adaptive cruise control❗️ I travel to & from my daughter’s home in Ft. Worth, TX following my younger daughter and her boys❗️It holds our distance perfectly making my trip much easier‼️ You might want to incorporate this benefit into your videos❗️👍
Just got an outback. Like driving a comfy recliner to work! Way more comfortable than my 08 accord i must say
This is very very helpful i am still learning the suburu line ups with the small suv
Hey you mentioned the Ascent, finally. You should have mentioned the hidden receiver behind that plastic cover. I like your videos. Great job!
Great video!! All of the fresh body stylings look amazing! Favorites are the ascent and Outback. 🤤
It would be the vehicle for 90% of drivers for 90% of the time…
Or at least a typical automatic with gears.
I own a Forester 2020 in Japan and I do have a smart rear mirror. 😁
It is awesome.
What was the final price?
Excellent compare and easy to understand. 🙂
Great job Alex!
This video is an excellent resource for specific Subaru vehicle comparisons!

Our Ascent Limited is Awesome, it’s one of the best Vehicles we have owned, very easy drive ability, layout is super, power is very good,
And the ride is really, really good. The Hamon Cardin (SP) Stereo is outstanding! It is a very good looking Car as well!
Very helpful! Love my Outback!
Thanks for breaking it down so well, I definitely want an outback now
I have a 2014 Crosstrek great little car and I'm a big guy will definitely consider Subaru when Im ready for a new car
Wow! First time I get to know about a large Subaru SUV the Ascent. It really looks great
On my second Forester (2016 and 2021).
Tactile = related to touch
Tactical = strategic planning and skills
Thnx, nice presentation. Have 2019 Outback 45k Miles...LOVE IT😅
Great video!!! I am hoping to get my Outback Limited XT by the end of this month!!!
Thanks! Hope it arrives soon!🤞

I would love to have an outback
I love my 2018 Crosstrek 6MT. Such a fun, zippy car to drive, and I love the compact nature of it. The 6 speed has a great feel. It is however smaller than I need for some uses so I’ve been looking at the Forester Wilderness. Can you please do some trim level comparisons? Also any idea when the ‘24 Forester Wilderness will be available?
Outback 2.5 non-turbo for the forever win.
The Crosstrek is too small for me and the Ascent is way more than I need. My wife has an Outback, but I chose the Forester for its shorter length and taller cabin. I'm 6' 2" and the Forester fits me perfectly.
Same here. Roomy, quiet,OK power. I just can't deal with the seats.
Is the Outback seats better? @@davidanderson8469
very good Alex, my favorite is the Ascent Touring.
Thank you! The Ascent Touring has a lot going for it!
Damn I wanted a forester before I saw this now I want an outback thanks
Great review of the lineup!
That happens more often than you'd think! 😂
I managed to snag an Impreza sedan. I'll hold onto it as long as I can.
I wish Subaru would make a small compact truck with the Forester platform!
Well done!
I am a Subaru lover and always enjoy your reviews and learn something new.
Thank you! Happy to hear you enjoy them!
@@alexpmo Alex you sure are welcome.
@@alexpmo Sure do without question.
You could have called the 24 crosstreks also the 2024 imprezas. There both literally identical from top to bottom. I been calling 24 crosstreks a lifted impreza
It's really an Impreza 😅
I’ve always wanted an Outback
With the new Crorolla Cross, I think the Crosstrek should have bigger back end to be more utilitarian.
I'm a Toyota owner (4Runner Limited), the Corolla Cross was an absolute NO when I was out looking for a second vehicle.
Outback ftw! Forester looks like every other mid size SUV. Outback is unique.
my wife has progressed: Forester, Outback, Forester Sport, Impreza Sport, Crosstrek Sport, back to a Forester, and now, and finally, the Ascent.
You love subaru? No issues with them?
Thanks for the walk through!
@alexpmo
Can we add front camera or 360 view to a forester premium or sport model?
Thank you so much for your videos.
really good stuff thank you for this fine comparison.
Purchased the 2024 Outback XT and negotiated $2,400 off sticker.
This was great, thank you!
Depending on my financial situation after I get my new job I'm truly gunning for an outback but i'd be very happy with a forester as well.
Great video. Thanks for sharing 👍

Sooper helpful. Thank you!
Excellent presentation!! Thank you !
Great vídeo just started watching your videos today lol.
Doea the Suburu Acadter comes Hybrid?
I'm waiting for Subaru to adopt the 24 meter iMax screen for the dash, so I can REALLY take my eyes off the road while I'm navigating through heavy traffic. Replacing most of the tactile controls with touchscreens also helps distract drivers. Technology and road safety are growing increasingly mutually exclusive.
Thank you, Alex😊.
great video Alex, Outback Touring all day long.....hoping for XT turbo version in UK for the next model (Gen 5 & 6 don't) 🤞
keep up the good work
How about a deep dive on the accessories, tow bars, etc? Upgrade packages.
Great video!
I have a 23 Outback and love it!
Thanks! Same here. Great car!
How do I turn off the automatic seat heat for the driver ? It always turns on automatically when the weather drops . I would like to have this feature only in the manual mode . I have a Forester 2021 E-Boxer .
Excellent presentation, was looking for someone that compares all the models! I'm saddened by the lack of standard transmissions, where is the Legacy?
Hi Alex,
Very comprehensive video comparison.
Thanks
Reason why the wilderness Crosstrek has 3500 lbs over the forester is they put a 2.5L engine in the Crosstrek vs the standard 2.0L.
The Forester is 4.7 inches taller than the Crosstrek, giving the Forester much better ingress and egress than the Crosstrek.
The Crosstrek isn't that bad to enter or exit.
And I'm no young whipper-snapper.
Great video but I had to laugh a little at "the outback gives off station wagon vibes..." and that's because it IS a station wagon (which I love), btw.
Very helpful!
Happy to help!
Can you do a comparison on a Subaru Outback vs a Toyota RAV4
I'm trying to decide between these 2
I bought a 2024 outback wilderness in april and just saw a different video about the crosrails built into to the roof rack and thought that was the coolest thing so i had to gocheck it out but was kinda disappointed to find mine are not that way but the rack it does have seems more stout than what i saw in the video
Thanks🎉
I have a 2023 ascent 2023 outback and a 2018 outback
Bought a Forester, first new car, it's leaked oil from the timing belt cover since day one. Both the dealer and Subaru have refused to help. Dealer claimed it was normal oil burn, Subaru Customer Service was super rude and claimed I just made it up! The oil leak had caused excessive engine wear so it's not a good investment. I have to carry synthetic oil with me everywhere plus add it at almost every usage. Extra bother and expense, plus bad customer service equals buyers remorse.
What year?
Its burning oil or do you see it leak?
Forester or Ascent. As ent sits high but Forester better on budget
