A brief analysis of the chandelier crash from the Phantom of the Opera (Las Vegas Spectacular) at the Venetian, which had its final curtain call a few years back.
I saw this live in Vegas when I was really young. I knew nothing about the story and never saw the movies. So I had no idea the chandelier was coming down at all. I only looked up a little bit after chandelier started falling (my mom told me to look up, the bitch 😂). Scared the HOLY hell outta me 😂👌 And now I’m sad, because I’ve just now started getting interested in the story, and I don’t remember anything from the live show. A wasted ticket on me lol
I was a child when I saw it in Vegas and knew nothing about it. Didn’t read the book, watch the movie or listen to some of the songs. At the time I was not into musicals, or movies, or old novels. Phantom of the Opera is not like Star Wars where everyone knows Vader is Luke’s father. When I saw it for my first and only time, I though I was going to die because I was front row and the chandelier stopped just above my head. God I would love to see Phantom in Vegas again. I hope one day it returns.
@@josephcook6442 Well...again...it was RIGHT above my head and my peripherals were useless in this case sooo....believe it 🙃 #nothardtobelieveactually
@@ezefinkielman4672 Cool to know someone else experienced the same thing as me. It's definitely something I would see again if given the opportunity as well 👌
I got to see this Vegas production when I was 12 and we sat RIGHT where that second clip was filmed, literally directly under the chandelier, and let me tell you, it was honestly so scary! I'm pretty positive I screamed, it comes down sO fast and SO close to you!
Miss this production so much! While the chandelier scenes are my favorite in any of the productions, I have yet to see a production that has done the chandelier as well as Vegas did. The reassembling was beautifully done and the crash was heart stopping no matter where you sat. Man, I miss this show.
Phantom was one of the very first play I saw back when I was 16 starring Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford (dating myself a bit here! lol). The 1st Broadway version I ever saw was the best ever! They had it rigged to a pully system kind of like a zip line. It did the same thing featured here by dropping a few feet but hen swung into the stage set and exploded! I almost pooped my pants lol About 2 min after intermission the theatre announced that EVERYONE needed to remain seated for the next 5 min and they actually had ushers in the isles to make sure everyone stayed seated during that part of the show. Most awesome thing I was ever witness to!
didnt see it with them but i did catch michael in dance of the vampires a few years ago. lol i was the only one who loved it. sadly it closed after one performance! wth since the GERMAN production ran longer?
I just saw it today at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Piccadilly Circus in London and I sat in the middle of the 4th row, which means that the chandelier “fell” right above my head and it scared the living hell outta me
A stunt double phantom actually rode the chandelier down because at Il Muto, he taunted Carlotta *actually hanging out of the chandelier* , very, very unsafe. When the crash happened, I saw one of his legs in the chandelier. I know this only because of a gif I found in an archive that is now gone. Funny
SPOILERS The changes they made to the show were rather strange, like havint the chandelier drop at the show's climax rather than at the end of Act 1, and the shortening of songs and removal of whole songs. The new effects are kind of neat, the transformation of the whole venue during the overture, like in the movie, is amazing for sure. But... why the other changes?
For me, the chandelier falling at the climax, when Erik is exposed in front of an entire audience of strangers, showcases his absolute fury in the fact that Christine had the audacity to remove his mask for a second time. To me, it feels stronger than him dropping it because of his heart break during act 1. On Broadway, he aims the chandelier at the actors on stage. While in Vegas, he dropped it onto the audience below, murdering many. Now, the cage trap being used instead of the noose at the end of act 2, I think, is a homage to the trap Erik used against Raoul in the movie. I quite liked it as a child. Honestly, the Vegas version is my all time favorite. Vegas built an ENTIRE theater for just one show. The fact that it didn't last as long as it should have, makes me quite sad. My first time seeing it, was when I was around 12-14. I sat directly under the chandelier. Let me tell you, I can still to this day hear the women screaming in the rows behind me as that chandelier fell, as I felt a rush of air as the lights went black. I cannot recall if this show was my introduction to Phantom. But I can tell you that I will never feel the magic of this show, as much as I did the first time I saw it in Vegas.
Ya know that has always bothered me that they changed the wording on some of the lyrics in the songs. I think the reason is because some of the original lyrics were considered "outdated" and they wanted to make the storyline more relatable to the audience. The changes in the song Think of Me bothers me the most because the changes actually changes the storyline a bit and it irks me lol
@@joshsauer4725 I too think its actually better having the chandelier fall at the climax. Makes more sense also that an incident like that (as well as the fire it causes in the movie) is what leads to the ruin of the opera house and eventual auction years later.

Chandelier Aptly named “Maria” Actually cost $7.2 Million!!!!!!!
It's a controlled fall. Every Phantom performance has had a controlled chandelier fall. (Except for the 25th anniversary performance at the Royal Albert Hall because that performance didn't have a fall. Just a few pyrotechnics.)
No ur not the only one. I was bummed when the chandelier didn’t fall . I get that the theater is old, but that fall of the chandelier is important to the story
I actually disagree. I thought the placement in the movie made much more sense. He drops the chandelier both as a diversion so he and christine can get away, and symbolically the fire consuming the opera house always seemed like a metaphor for the phantom reclaiming the opera house as his domain, even if it was just a pile of ashes. Not unlike the ending to rebecca.
Gosh DANG IT what I would give to see this LIVE! Stuff like this usually are too scary for me, but The Phantom of the Opera's just one of those exceptions~!
Loved this performance. I would love to find it on video to buy. Why they aren't selling it I'll never know. Wonderful production value! The Phantoms Masque of the Red Death costume was epic
Welcome to Vegas. The theater for this production was built _specifically_ for Phantom of the Opera, with more intricate set design and engineering for the purpose of wow-ing the audience. You couldn't get this sort of thrill in any other old theater
Nobody knows that Mexico was the first country to create a Phantom of the opera musical in the 70's. And that's the same way the chandelier falls down over the audience. The musical opening were in Teatro de los Insurgentes in Mexico City. The phantom was played by first actor Julio Alemán and Christine by the singer Lucía Méndez. The writer and producer was Raúl Astor. Believe it or not, Andrew Lloyd Webber was inspired by Mexico's Musical.
Man, the concept of scaring the audience in the chandelier crash is honestly pretty cool
The sound of their screams fills my soul.
HuffyTun I don’t have a soul... but it still fulfills my life long purpose
I was just thinking the same thing! I am literally sitting here cackling with evil laughter!!!
Awww.
Huh

The Dude fucking same exact thing with me
i find this hard to believe that anyone, even someone who isnt a Phan, going to see the show would be so oblivous to the chandelier crash,

I thought I was going to die😂
Love how as it drops, the ceiling goes from blue to blood red! Best five seconds of my life was seeing it all in person! 💗
0:33 this one is so scary because all the lights go out before it would "hit" the ground and you don't know if it actually fell or not

They tried to resemble it in the US/UK tour with the new set However it does not drop as fast but has more use in the show.
Due to the vegas chandeliers size it was hard to do any major interaction throughout the show

I saw phantom several times in Vegas and once was sitting directly under the chandelier. You could feel the air as if fell. It was amazing

Apparently they can’t have the show longer than 90 minutes. Idk why
@@beneddiected it's in Vegas they want to do as many shows as possible and get people back into the casinos, sad but simple reason (probably anyway)

No wonder the theatre still has it hung there if it cost that much, might as well get a actual decoration out of it after the show closed lol
THAT WAS BLOODY DANGEROUS FOR A BROADWAY

oh yeah
It isn't dangerous in the least.

Faded_Chew I was quite disappointed with that actually haha
I'll never forget the blood curdling screams I heard when that chandelier fell just above the audience.
Seeing the chandelier fall right on top of me would freak me out
Am I the only one here who views this video and wishes that this was used for the Royal Albert Hall production?
Vicente Hizon if only!!!
No ur not the only one. I was bummed when the chandelier didn’t fall . I get that the theater is old, but that fall of the chandelier is important to the story
We sat under the chandelier it was a little scary. We put our hands over our heads to brace from it.
It's weird knowing this doesn't happen after "All I Ask Of You" but this looks so damn cool it doesn't really matter in the end
Wait where is it here?
I agree it is weird, but I do feel like it matters when the crash happens.
I actually disagree. I thought the placement in the movie made much more sense. my parents went to see phantom at this theater ages ago, they were sitting right under where the chandelier crashes down and they were terrified lol 😆
Holy Smokes you know that Chandelier Crash that used to be in the Vegas Production could've killed all of those sitting in the Audience

Cool
I love chandeliers like our new house at Livingston jersey
We saw this show and had a chance to talk with the actors. Loved it.
Saw this live and sat right under the chandelier. It certainly gets your attention when it falls
I pity the people who sat directly underneath it.
Pity them? I envy them!
Pity lmao I'd be gunning for those seats
Note: The Phantom didn’t mean to Frighten you prematurely
It must be really scary to be underneath it I loved all the different angles that the drop was shot at
I like chandeliers like on your house at Livingston New Jersey
Mind blowing
0:28 that first small fall is so terrifying
Chandelier was $7.2 Million!!!!!!!
I love reading all of that.. Pausing every few seconds because the text goes before you read 2 words.... Thanks for making this... Meh video
I wish they still did it like this
Why is the audience wearing phantom masks? (seen in the last second of the clip)
Rachel your joking right?
Because it was to celebrate it's 4th year in Las Vegas before it sadly closed.
Rest assured it’s not gonna actually drop onto you, if it does it’s a big ol lawsuit coming their way
