How To Sing Like Layne Staley - Alice In Chains - Man In The Box - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
I had the opportunity to see Layne Staley live a couple of times and I was always impressed with how he put everything he had into his performance and left it ALL on the field.
Who else out there had the opportunity to see Layne perform live and what was your experience?
Let me know in the comments!
Layne had that real grindy kind of tone and got that great distortion through his ability to compress his air.
In this video I’ll show you how to get that same distortion as well as how you can use correct compression to avoid hurting yourself, using the KTVA method.
Here are is the full version of the song from the video:

Layne was one of a kind. Such a stunning voice filled with pain and emotion. His tone, his phrasing. He was perfect. İ can't listen to him without tearing up.
No one can sing like he did.

I remember rolling into Seattle one night around '99 and the DJ said the city had just set a record of 90 straight days of rain. Pretty sure it plays into the vibe up there.

I find Layne's way of singing a lot more convincing, more genuine.. Respect to Ken for explaining the difference. Most teachers would just teach you to sing the "right" way, which doesn't really give the same results. Gabriela is a legend!

the most apt way to phrase it is Layne delivered in a very "raw" way.. in terms of the emotion he put into it, but also the way he was almost singing his throat raw lol

I'm a lifelong singer and just a week of serious practice using your videos has allowed me to use techniques I've been trying to accomplish for almost a decade. I appreciate you and all you do!! I always thought there was something wrong with me because I CANNOT learn without a demonstration, without trying to mimic what I'm hearing and you do a fantastic job of really describing techniques in ways that help my visualization. You really have a way with words....It's truly a gift!! You are so inspiring!! Not all ladies want to be a bubblegum pop singer, I want to rock! I love the grumbly, gravely, growling distorted noises that many people consider "unladylike". I know there's a way to do it without injury, the proof is in your singing. You have a gift and I am so grateful that you want to share it with the world. Rock on Ken!!

Thank you sir! Layne Staley, and Scott Weiland are two of my favorite singers and I love singing in their style, as we have basically the same range. I can hit their high notes, but usually get fatigued fast. I'm sure I'm not doing it in a healthy way because I do a lot of it by emulating what I hear. You can definitely hear the vulnerability and brutality in Layne's big belts. It's also a big difference that you can notice when practiced trained singers sing his songs because they are habituated to using safe conservative techniques to hit the same notes but Layne wasn't about that. He did have great technique but he also chose to be brutal for the purpose of his stylistic vision. Kurt is like the epitome of brutality in grunge vocals because he was all savage harshness. There's just so much raw and diverse passionate authenticity in that movement

I like to think that the lyrics (as you said) are even more complex than that. If there's some kind of evil inside of you speaking to you, it's not all you. The evil is challenging and speaking for itself whilst Layne is compartmentalizing and breaking down the consequence. He feeds into the "hear no evil see no evil" He sees things he doesn't want so the evil temps him (drugs) to sew his eyes instead of facing it (and now that you've sewn them shut, shows that he decides to take the easier of the two roads) However on his second temptation "deny your maker" It seems as if the ultimate good side comes out knowing the repercussions and the finality of making such a judgement. Once evil realizes the good, he attempts manipulation at another level 'animals.' Alot of people who have given up hope on humans, still have a chance to be caught up in love for animals as they are a much purer form of friendship unconditional really. However since he's eyes are sewn shut I assume the evil was a bit too apprehensive and lost the overall battle within this song.
    Just my interpretation.

Ken says "I remember seeing a couple concerts with him, like two of em, and he was pretty drugged out..unfortunately". Yep. I think you could say that about the whole gang of bands in the Seattle grunge sound. I saw Alice in Chains at Lollapalooza 3. Man i just looked at that was 27 year ago. That was the summer after Dirt their biggest selling album was released. That album had some great songs but filled with gritty and very dark sound. I think you kinda have to feel it ( and im not sure you would want to) to really replicate it but you can come close.
Almost all the grunge era singers have overdosed. And there were some really some unique vocal talents among them. its sad.
guess i should correct that. they didnt all overdose some suicided but we all know it drug use was a big factor.

@@kentamplin That being said Ken, one of the few of that genre still around is Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees. Not as well known as Alice in Chains or Soundgarden but he has a 'very' distinct voice. They did have the song Nearly Lost You that was in the Cameron Crowe film Singles which featured alot of music of that Genre. If you get the urge to review him would be cool.

13:00 Great breakdown of the meaning behind Man in the Box's chorus. You don't often hear people discuss this. The statements in the chorus are all unique refrains dealing with the spiritual battle around life and death, how to live and how to relate to the suffering around us; the chorus is like the back and forth push and pull towards and away from faith or empathy or spiritual peace. That depth is what makes it one of the greatest rock songs of all time because it's more than just an attention grabber; it's a spiritual message from the belly of the beast

Hello Ken, I wanted to say, great video! Gabby is amazing. Wow!
I am fairly new to your channel and I don't know if you have touched on his topic or not, but you spoke a bit about drugs when you saw Layne in concert in the video; I wanted to know how much do drugs and smoking affect one's signing voice and lungs?
I've always cringed at seeing singers smoking, because I would think, they'd baby their voice, since that is their instrument and bread and butter. But, I always figured most singers smoked to GET that raspy voice, but how long before the smoking and drugs causes injury to your voice?

  • @GabiBrooks

Ok so a thing I noticed is that even if I'm more leaning towards your technique Ken, I find Layne's nasally sounding technique to be much easier on the voice buut what I don't like is that it kinda sounds weak. In other words, for me it's more like I'm lazy and won't use my whole machine- type of distortion. Weird to find out it's unhealthy when it seems so easy and conservative on the chords, if I may say so. Interesting video!
