HOW TO SING LIKE AXL ROSE - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Rolling Stone has named Axl Rose one of the greatest singers of all time and his voice is impossible not to recognize.
Today I’ll be showing you how to sing like Axl in a new series I’m doing called How To Sing Like. In this series we’ll look at the vocal qualities of the artists you’ve picked by request and I’ll break down how you can sing in their style while still maintaining your own unique interpretation.
While Axl likes to use a lot of nasality in his sound, I personally prefer a rounder, sound with more girth and I’ll show you how you can achieve the same.
I’ll be sharing a version I did of “Paradise City” along with some performances from KTVA students Kati Cher and Gabriela Gunčíková so you can see for yourself how to achieve the kind of range we demonstrate.
I hope you all find the video to be helpful and please be sure to share how you thought we measured up in the comments.
Here's also the full versions of the vocal demonstrations from the video:

Axl Rose and Freddie Mercury are my top 2 favourite vocalists. Axl was mind blowing in his prime, and I'm happy he is still alive and having fun touring even if his voice isn't as strong.
I think Freddie came from another planet...his voice was otherworldly 🌠✨

Unlike many bands or so-called singers who don't say anything in their songs, Guns N Roses have a story in each song, that is why it's so hard to cover, and not many people even dare to try. Guns N Roses is a unique band in history, and a great one too. The voice of Axl is very unique and hard to cover, so why even try, it's good to just sing it without trying to monkee it.
Thank you for this course and publication.

Kati is so cool !! Also Gabriela !! Greatings from an old german music teacher who studied classical music (pianist) and played for 30 years in Rockbands (keyboard/guitar). I like your channel cause I have trained a lot of young people at the piano. And what can I say is: If your student is bad, teacher is bad.

Nasality in his sound. I figured that out when I recorded myself singing "Don't Cry" and realized I can actually sound like him, including the nasally, compressed, slightly distorted sound he does towards the end of the song.
Thanks Ken you are helping me find all the artists I can sing like and Axl is one of the easiest for me, I assumed it was because everything is tuned down half a step and allows me to really do the richer vocals from him and allows for me to jump a higher range but still be comfortable. I have used your videos for a lot of my singing endeavors and you have helped me in more ways than you know.
Artists you have helped me cover successfully are Roy Orbison (hardest), some Freddie Mercury (hard but doable on some of his work), Axl (easiest time covering an artist), Frank Sinatra (surprisingly pretty hard), Richard O'Brien (not too hard but sings in a octave that can be challenging) and many others. I am watching this video to see if what I picked up on to sound like him matches your assessment of his voice. Now I just got to learn how to do Shannon Hoon so I can do the backing vocals of some of their songs, that should be fun since Shannon had such a different voice.
In case you were wondering how long it has taken me to learn from your videos, I have been using them for about 7 years. Lots of great advice, tips and overall technique covered in them.
Background helped a lot as well as I have a highly musical family and played guitar for 25 years, and would sing along and it helped me learn how to get in tune and stay in tune, everything else I learned from you. Again I am forever grateful to you and your videos.
I'll upload my video for the song if you care to want to listen to it.

Axl doesn't express himself only with one specific timbre. Yesterday I listened to Use Your Illusion I again, and I can assure that he has at least 4 different type and color in his voice, that he chooses to use when the music fits. Sometimes it's shrill and extremely compressed; other times, he sings with a deep and tender voice. Not to mention when his sounds kind of twangy. There's a malice, somewhat provocative in his style. He's such a unique singer.

Right on Ken great job man on a tough song this is why everyday I warm up my vocals I do lip trolls because I know that if I can cut back how much air passes through my vocal folds then this will save my voice and give it longevity because I sing heavy rock and mate the headband suits you, you should sing with that when you do your song's

I just discovered your channel recently when you introduced Dino Jelusic. I kept thinking to myself...Ken Tamplin???...where have I heard that name before??? It took me a lot of thought by I finally remembered "An Axe to Grind." I use to have that album years ago. Might still in a box somewhere. Just saying thanks for making music and keeping music real for so long.

Hey Ken, I'd really like Jon Bon Jovi in this series, he has a really unique kind of distortion and also how he changed the way he was singing in the 80s vs 90s and on. Thank you for what you're doing.
