How To Sing Like Sebastian Bach - Skid Row - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Would you think it would be harder or easier for a girl to sing in Sebastian Bach’s range?
Though many of you might think it’s easier, it’s actually harder in the sense that Sebastian sings in a lower register than most females and to be able to belt from that same register is no easy feat.
However, I’m going to show you a couple of examples of two of our own KTVA female students, demonstrating that it can be done using the KTVA method.
I’ll also explain how to get the same command of head voice that Sebastian has and how to compress air up top.
Check it out!

How to sing like Sebastian Bach: be damn gifted.
Doesn't hurt.
No doubt.
I knew some guys who took lessons from the same person as Sebastian, and they never achieved this level, so some of it is natural talent, and some of it is drive. Some of us in the comments could get there with the proper training, but I'm 50, so I will leave it to the younger folks!
@@1flat1sharp47 Could do the Bach stuff back in the Day .. But at 56 now ... Not So no More . But can Bach Himself now ??
Sebastian Bach is a gift from above! He can do anything with his voice. He can do ballads, belters, Metal anthems, nobody surpass this icon in making a song rock like S.B! And yourself of course Ken.🤟🏻
Thanks Robert!
For me it’s all about breathing right so I can sustain super high super long notes supported by the diaphragm. No doubt Sebastian Bach has his breathing down right. I’m nowhere near his caliber but hey who is?! I have tons of interviews of him and he also has a killer laugh! An awesomely warm humorous guy.👍
@@robertlackstein6366 Where could I learn about this, I have a wide ass vocal range but I can't hold a 6th or 7th octave note for more than 8 seconds.
Can he do johnny cash though?
You do know Steve Perry was his idol and still is.
What makes this song so powerful is Sebastian’s passion in the song that gives it such power. To this day this song can still give me chills, even bring tears
I'm blown away by how well both of these ladies took on Sebastian Bach songs. He's a monster of a singer and not only did they nail the songs but also added their own sound and style rather than copy or imitate the original versions.
👍💜😀
I week into course, I didn't think that course would improve that much. Best course ever
Great to hear that, DK! Keep it up!

My request is to hear you (or one of your male students) sing some Bach. How about Slave to the Grind?
Thanks for the suggestion!
man i love ken tamplin! any singer's voice that i fall in love with i find ken explaining in detail how that guy does that and i love that about him! just by seeing these videos i have got so much better at singing over these last 3 years and thank you ken tamplin for helping me through my journey! i got many more years to come if God wills so see ya ken when i make it big
I loved Gabby's vocal in this showcase. She blew me away!
"What I would've changed..." and this is why HE sang for Skid Row, because feeling > technique.
Now listen to Bach, where "feeling" destroyed his voice.
Never clicked so fast!
Glad you're here, Fede!
Interesting video. Ive been a bit Bach obsessed lately. Can't get enough of his old skid row live performances. His energy was outstanding. Yes, little pitchy sometimes, a lot pitchy at times, but incredibly powerful nonetheless and when he hits it, he hits it HARD! I love belting it out with him! Also learning from your videos about head and chest voice is very interesting. Thank you!!
SAME HERE OMFG.. SAME HEREEEE
Nobody can deliver the emotion of a song quite like Bach!
Great video Ken. Sebastian had the Golden pipes!
Gabby by far best cover of Wasted Time I have ever heard!! And there are a lot out there. She really hit the high notes in the end!! And I like vowel pronunciation as well. The foreign language showing.
And like u said, she does it with no effort! Good job getting her there!
I’m 53, seen and met Sebastian at the Palladium in 89, 90 , and seen him at the Chase County Fair in Nebraska 2 yrs ago. Dude still has pipes, but definitely not the range and pitchy. But still puts it out there!
👍💜😀
Sebastian had a fair bit of Bel Canto training prior to joining Skid Row, and was generally really good with warming up and down from shows. However, heavy touring, drugs and booze played a part on his live performances (particularly from 93 onwards). He stopped using mix/head with distortion and veered into straight vocal fry in 95 to try and get the screams and it just messed it up further. He’s done well to get a lot back since (and is still awesome) but it’s never been quite the same as those first couple of albums/tours.
Thanks for weighing in, Zakk!
Agree, he can't sing anymore. Sad because he had an awesome voice.
@@here2rock988 He did it friend, in my books you dont gotta do it forever, "That will do pig" :)
Wow Gabriela is amazing! Very inspirational to know we can improve and get closer to these abilities with the right training and practice! Thanks for your masterful tutelage!
You're so welcome!
Wow, she put tingles up my spine. What power and clarity.
Rock on!
Just love what you've done with your voice Gabby!
Bach still rocks man! Listen to his Angel Down album. It kicks ass!
Indeed!
Yes still great live also. He recorded Angel Down at Sound City with ZERO auto turning. Plus he brought bach Axl Rose.
American Metalhead is fuckin wild
I just love Gabriella’s voice 😍
She's awesome, Fiona!
I wish that I could sing as great 🎤🥴
I bought your course back around christmas time. I gotta say. I'm very impressed. I never thought I could sing so low yet so high. I've been using I Remember You to test my full range. And when you were talking about fall offs in his voice. I'm not sure if this why he does it but. For me, its a great way to go from high, mid, low, and back up. It can show off your range. And I've noticed that he really shows off his range in his singing. Along with power and stamina as well. Its nice when a singer shows what he or she can do.
Great to hear you're having success! Keep it up!
This song has always given me goosebumps. What an awesome job !!!!! Congratulations!!!!!
Fully agree with your assessment Ken.
👍💜😀
I seen Sebastian last year in October in Grand Rapids Michigan, He still did sound really good. I imagine if he was still with Skid Row it may of sounded even better. Obviously their equipment is better and i seen him in a rather small venue with a few hundred people. I'd pay to see him again. Hopefully in Detroit this spring.
That's awesome! Really happy to hear that!
Two of the most amazing students accurately covering one of my favorites! You and your protégés just ROCK! I don’t even sing but LOVE these videos 😉
Happy to hear that, Richard!
Gabby is without a doubt your best student! Well done sir, you should be very proud of your work with her! I wish I could sing like that!

As others have said, "I've never clicked so fast!" and it was Gabriela's "Wasted Time" cover that first introduced me to your channel and the quality of your vocal instruction. Then you mentioned Jeff Buckley and made my entire day! Absolutely objective and fair assessment too; Sebastian could be pitchy. But I submit that his work on Broadway helped a great deal with correcting bad habits...at least for a while. THANK YOU, KEN!
Wow, thank you!
TYSM for doing my recommendation!!
No problem!!
Dear lord, those guys are trained really well!
Efficiency means minimal air/ effort with maximum output / sound. Thanks for the great detailed explanations Ken. Really nice job by your students.
Thanks!
90s sebastian bach was the best sounding
Indeed! Thanks, Marvyn!
Layne Staley Scott Weiland Sebastian Bach Phil Anselmo Chris Robinson the 90’s were loaded!
The falling pitch thing is stylistic thing going way back. Miles Davis did that with his trumpet and later guitarists like John mclaughlin using the Tremolo bar. When I noticed certain singers doing it I recognized it as that type of thing. Michael kiske really stands out doing that. Cant use auto tune doing those organic things lol
Thank you, Ricardo!
I’ve been waiting for this one!! My favorite front man of all time!!! Great breakdown!
Glad you enjoyed!
They are so amazing. But Gabriel is my favorite. Thank you!
She's awesome, Nidia!
You need to go to Skid Row now. This kid is amazing

Very cool! Good job! Sebastian Bach need see this video!!! Gabriela is really amazing!

Very cool. I think Sebastian would dig this one, too. I'd love to hear your take on Brandi Carlile's vocals. I only recently became aware of her with her amazing song "The Joke" that WFUV played at the same time every morning when it first came out. I love her vocal strength and texture, and her vibrato is like a tremolo and I don't know how she achieves it. It especially comes through in her live performances.
Thanks for the suggestion, Carol!
The live performance in London opening for G N R is a favorite
Wow! This is one of my favorite singers that can sing really high, especially the song “i remember you”. Then i heard sir Ken. This is another great post.
Glad you enjoyed it, Joshua!
hi ken how are you doing? man your work is just fantastic and extremely technical, I would love to be a student one day, maybe one day my friend, see you there, I immensely thank you for your videos and explanations, a big hug and considerations from a guy who honors and accompanies his fantastic work here in Brazil
Thanks, Alan!
I’m just gonna start doing half hour Skypes once a month. All I can afford for now. I’d love to come to AZ. Hopefully 2021 I’ll make it happen but consistent Skype lessons are a must. No more messing around. I’ll see you soon sensei.
Let do this! Rock on!
Thanks Ken for this and even if it’s hard for some people to hear it, Sebastian had little problems you said especially on stage. But Sebastian is a legend🎶👏🏼❤️🔥
Apologies in advance for a lengthy comment, but I do have a very sincere question.
Ken, I've no doubt you're a phenomenal coach, and have helped everyone reach far more of their potential. Kudos. You certainly know what you're talking about, and you get excellent results from your students. Sebastian is my favorite rock singer. While I certainly am not offended by your criticism, I do have a very sincere question for you, and I am asking this without any snarkiness ( I have to say that because text loses all tone and can be misconstrued). While you did mention Sebastian's ability to use distortion in his head voice, when Sebastian used his head voice, it wasn't obvious. On very few occasions, can you actually hear the breaking point. Wasted Time is one example, and Gabriella, while not nailing every nuance of Sebastian, did an outstanding job, and did not sound like she was using head voice at all. However, when you would sing small bits, it was very apparent that it was your falsetto. Again, not a slam to you. It's hard to sing. But, can you mimic Sebastian in those regards? Can you get his dynamics, vibrato, gain and distortion? Or, is that something specific to an individual, like Bas himself? Would you please do a video focusing on these nuances? Why does Bas sound this way, and can do what he does the way he does it, and can anyone truly learn to mimic that? I've been waiting for you to do a video where you yourself cover Bas and go into these details. Sorry if I'm being overly verbose, but I am trying to be as detailed as I can. Again, I'm asking with the the utmost respect.
Gotta love S B. Amazing singer
Your girls did amazing. Great video

Great version of skid row songs! I seen skid row twice ! Saw them in 2000 and 2002! But unfortunately ! Sebastian had already left the band! So I never got to see him live! I'll say one thing ! When that first skid row album hit back in 1989! Rock fans was like who is that amazing singer!!!! Keep rockin ken!!!!

Great explaining Ken love how you demonstrate how you said Sebastian Bach would let the note fall you demonstrating how he did it that's funny the way you did it it's hilarious lol😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂your students do a fantastic.job at singing like him and demonstrating his vocals great demonstrations as always Ken well done to them 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks, Cade! Appreciate the listen!
Your welcome Ken always enjoy listening buddy
IMO a good voice is something you're gifted with, no amount of coaching will make you sound like Bach,
Plant, Bon Scott, Ozzy, Dio, Mick etc ..they all have such unique voices it's nearly impossible to replicate!!
We're not trying to replicate anyone. Just utilizing techniques that we admire. And yes, just about anyone can learn to sing. It's like saying you have to be born knowing how to play the piano, dance, paint or install a ceiling fan. Most people can learn anything, if they apply themselves.
Sebastian Bach learned how to sing from Don Lawrence, a Juilliard-educated vocal coach from New York. Same vocal coach for Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston, Axl Rose, Christina Aguilera, Bono and others.
Thank you.
Good to hear we will hear from Gabi again. Her Wasted Time video is what made me subscribe to your channel. She remains my favorite of the students you have had on your channel.
Wonderful, Adam!
I love Skid Row

Hey Ken! Another great video. Was never a Skid Row fan but i always liked Sebastian. He was and still is a good frontman with an incredible voice. Fantastic job by both Alyona and Gabriela. I loved Aly's cover bands of The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Alyona is definitely a true star. Russian women really seem to have alot of talent when it comes to music. Thanks again Ken for the really cool and informative video. As always keep rockin'!😎

So much voice control by your student on the song wasted time. Every note sounded perfect. Request for you to do one of Sebastian's songs Ken. Great video.

As a male, I found Sebastian pretty easy to cover and I wholeheartedly agree with the annoying drop-offs. my girlfriend can do a killer Seb but has problems with keeping vibrato steady while screaming in high keys... I don't know how to help her with that, I tell her how I do it but do not want her to damage her, I constantly tell her if it hurts STOP. You're two examples up here are so different. One is softer as the other is straight forward strong (Gabby)... but the track selection for her I thought was the wrong one, I would have gone with Youth Gone Wild... just my humble opinion... GREAT VID!!!
Jaybiam, I have several videos on both vibrato and screaming. Your GF may want to check them out. You're right, it shouldn't hurt.

Can't wait for more stuff with Gabriella! Ever since I discovered her on your channel, she has been my favourite female singer for rock. She is amazing and I really miss her coming out with new stuff.
She's awesome, nagyvk1!
That vocal cords length factor made me think about castrati. I mean, guys like Farineli with 6 octaves and huge cords, not to mention that as (sadly) their bones never fully hardened, they had huge chests as their ribs gave way as they developed their breathing. And finally, that would have to be something they'd focus exclusively on as a way of coping.
I mean, I know it's sad and thankfully that practice was dropped. Still, makes me wonder what those castrati would sound like. I can imagine them like a 100 Watt Marshall up close, almost blowing you away ...
Anyway, awesome video. Very good point about watching out for vocal fatigue... Good indicator that something's not being done correctly and you may just blow your voice out if you're not careful.
BTW highly recommend listening Sebastian Bach and Axl, there were a couple of songs where they sing together on the Angel Down and Chinese Democracy albums, just worth a listen.
Gabriela Guncikova rocks! Her tone, pitch and range are phenomenal.

You keep promising to cover a Sebastian Bach song. We are all waiting!! Please cover I Will Remember You.
Hiya Ken , Great video as always ....hope you dont mind a little critique ... Kind of comparing apples and oranges with different songs . Whilst i personally prefer female rock vocals , singers like Sebastian Bach are famous for the rock scream ala steven tyler, bruce dickinson , steven page ......and I didnt think it could be done vice versa , as you said different vocal chords , lung capacity etc ..... maybe compare your singers with "I remember you" ...... I was always a fan of Doro pesch , back in our 80's it was about how you could wail .....also i found this girl Chaos Heidi singing infinite dreams which blew me away see what you think ...always looking too learn ....much love x

The ‘fall outs’ had me! Amazing observations, Uncle Ken. I’m laughing and learning lots.
Glad you enjoyed it!
1980 Junior High, I joined chorus because I need an elective and because it was full of cute girls. My singing teacher had told me I had a pretty good voice and I got to sing in a few concerts with the choir. My best friend was making fun of me for the way I was singing so I quit. Years later watching your channel, I discovered I was switching registrars , head and mix voice. I didn’t even know that’s what I was doing. It was so easy for me. Don’t give up on your dreams and ignore the naysayers. Rock On!
Rock on, Justin!
I can relate Justin! Ken has helped me realize all the different sounds I could make on purpose as a kid were actually helpful qualities that could have made my voice unique. I remember being told vibrato was “bad” if it wasn’t “natural.” I was able to make my voice sound like a lot of different vocalists, but assumed it was wrong if those sounds were not from my natural singing voice.
That's a nice video, i have already seen those covers, the one that sings Wasted Time is the best for me, she can literally reach high notes. Anyway, I liked this video a lot and I loved it that you were talking abt Sebastian Bach's vocal bc his voice is literally impressive and very very strong, I think that's why for me he is one of the best singers of the history. Well thanks for posting excellent videos about vocals I really like them!
Awesome!
Love your shirt ! 😬 trippy !
Thanks! 😁
Hey Ken, I love your videos. You teach me things and I am a producer. However, why is it that it's okay for Freddie to rush his vibrato? But it's not okay for Sebastian to end the chorus lines lazy? Maybe he also has his reason, like he wants to end I remember you perfectly at the end of the chorus. Plus it's live vocals vs studio with Mercury. I'm just asking because I want to know your answer. Keep doing what you're doing because it helps me. Thanks Ken! 😎
