  • Sing With Compression - Vocal Fry - Gabriela Gunčíková Before and After - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
    Singing with distortion and "vocal fry" is like a gladiator sport.
    PLEASE:
    Do not attempt this until you fully understand the consequences of what you are getting yourself in to.
    There is a very specific way to train for this with I discuss in my video.
    There are those out there, willing to sell you a course or give you the green light to make this jump without proper training.
    Even Superman is not that stupid.
    We just understand how to get to this kind of hyper glottal compression safely so we don't destroy our voices.
    I hope this video serves you well on this sensitive subject.

    I sold my Ibanez to buy the course of Ken Tamplin and everybody is telling me how incredible it is the way my singing has developed over only three month. I took classes before, but no singing teacher was able to teach me over the time what I learned with Ken Tamplin in such a short time. I still have a lot to go, but I make my living of the music already, and can only recommend him. And by the way, Gaby is really great and lovely and talented and I love the student demonstrations Ken does with her. .... and don't worry, I have more guitars ;-) Last year I was one of the founding members of a Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band in Germany and we have become the most booked FM Tribute in Germany with incredible press reviews especially regarding the voices. If I'd win the lottery (unfortunately I don't play), the first thing I would do, ist apply for Ken Tamplin Master Class!

    Singing is as difficult as playing an instrument. I am singing for 3 years and still have a lot to learn. But one thing I learned very early: If it hurts stop!

    As a voice teacher of 40+ years - Ken is one of the few people who understands the essential mechanics of good singing which must be maintained regardless of style in order to protect the instrument. Pay close attention to what he is saying for it is of great value!

      i can certainly vouch for Don's statement. i started singing in Church, then Select Choir at school. Back then, without knowing much, i had solid technique, good range, and remained in Select Choir for 6 years, until we moved. i didn't continue any type of Choir after that and the summer after graduating (1982), i started a rock band that lasted until 2003. My voice was still in nice shape, but i was to find out that i couldn't just shoot from the hip singing rock vocals and expect success.
      As most starting bands do, we began with about 90% covers. i learned a lot about what i didn't know, simply by trying to learn the songs by myself. Yes i had been taught how to sing, BUT -what i did not do (which we did incessantly in choir) was to get everything polished down to the syllable. My only practice beforehand, was using a karaoke software program to just about wipe out vocals from tunes we would be playing at upcoming rehearsals, and sing along with that. i had bailed on scales, warmups, singing multiple voiced vowel scales...just practicin' the tunes, man....shit, i was a fool. :/
      To cut to the chase, in 1989, i lost my voice for a good month or so, even had the feeling of a possible nodule. Oddly the song that did me in is not difficult in pitch, range or volume. It does however, have several lengthy segments without much space for a full breath. It was my lack of healthy technique that blew it. The song? Sounds stupid, but it was "Things We Said Today" by The Beatles. Again, hardly any range is required, but it is the somewhat relentless onslaught of lyrics with small breath spaces, poorly placed breath places, and the occasional full breath reset...at least that was how i viewed it at the time.
      When it was found that i didn't need surgery, just had swelling in one of the folds, i started working with a vocal coach.....Lesson Learnt, chillren.

      You imagined unconscientiously singing the same and because you don't have the technique, your muscles tense up instantly. It happened to me regularly on high notes. Learn singing, especially using mixed voice and your throat won't hurt.

  • @THEWEIRDNET
    @THEWEIRDNET 6 лет назад +63

    I'm commenting from my other account again (Tommy M from the forums here): I really, really hope that people watching this realize just how important this technique is for bringing that grit to your voice SAFELY! Seriously folks, I was a total skeptic about KTVA but the results from even a year of my (scattered, unfocused lately) practice have been insanely positive. It takes hard work and dedication, but I can assure you that Ken and his team have produced probably the best vocal course available.

    Gabriela`s new variant of vocal distortion sounds better. Old voice with fry sounded unnatural for her, seems like it hurts her. You made her vocal sound just how it has to be.

New style, same guys who have aged. .especially me😂 and I don't wanna hurt my voice like I did in the past.Knowing that I haven't sung for long time . But thanks to you, I think I can even be better that in the past. Love from France everyone.

      Laurent, you can far exceed the voice of your former self. You need to learn and grow your voice into something it has never been before. And you can learn to control the air, such that you won't go hoarse any more from oversinging.

      @@kentamplin whoah I didn't expect such a quick answer. Thank you Ken. Back in the days I was really inspired (and kind of copying ) guys like Axl Rose and James Hetfield . Now that I'm 42, I think I know myself and my voice better and so I can start to be... well...me. The other challenge for a french guy like me now is to sing vowels in a proper English way, even though my job as a tour guide helped me a lot to get a good accent. Anyway thanks again . Peace and love everyone.

On top of that is His ability to explain and present the material in a way everyone can understand. I have seen a great deal of improvement in my singing and have realized the ability of my voice to reach beyond what I ever thought possible. This is very helpful. I am a male singer with around 3 1/2 octaves (C2-G5) and I mainly sing hard rock and heavy metal. However, I am having a hard time getting out really heavy grit or screams in my singing without hurting my voice. And this video really helped, thanks.

    Ken your knowledge is golden. Your course is a bargain too, but my issue is time and having to work so much. I have yet to actually practice daily all you have on youtube, but the material I have practiced and gone over has made a huge difference in my singing. I used to get vocal fry real bad, but now only when I practice all those higher octaves that I can barely reach in the female range. I've always had that heavy voice that sounds good singing something like Dio. Now I can sing a few Scorpion songs and working on incorporating some crazy powerful dynamics. I never dreamed in a million years that I would be attempting to cover Steve Perry, but even if I don't succeed in accomplishing those higher harmonics of Steve's it's taking me out of my comfort zone and pushing me to the next level. If you want something bad enough with every cell in your body you will eventually make it happen. This is not for lazy people you have to throw away your TV and any other distractions. I guess we all have our excuses and mine is a lack of time to devote to this love affair of music. We love your music Ken and your lessons/ tips you so kindly give us for free. I will eventually expand to your pay courses, hopefully sooner than later. Thank you n God Bless!

    Hearing the difference between how Gabriela's technique was before and how much she's improved over the years really proved your point here. Having a direct comparion of bad and good technique generally helps me the most to pinpoint what it is that I need to work on exactly :)
    Could you make something like a quick technique overview montage with short examples sung by you and your students? Kind of like the one you did for distortion some time ago, but for other thechniques and focusing on how different voices gradually incorporate the same concept as a side-by-side comparison?
    For example showing clips of Gabby, Alyona, you and another male student each demonstrating the same part of a certain song in varying degrees of compression / twang / growl distortion / fry distortion and so on?
    This would give an awesome overview, especially if there are both male and female singers with contrasting voice characteristics :)

    I know more than a few singers who are over-worked to the point of destroying their voice. Singers who have zero technique doing too many gigs, trying sing over a loud band with nothing more than a poorly developed call voice. This goes on at the pro level too.
    And compounding the horror is ppl (even other musicians) tell these singers that they sound great, that they're 'good singers'.
    If your voice is going to be your life, learn... and why wouldn't you want to learn from the best? KTVA, check it out. I've tried other vocal coaches, methods, nothing compares to KTVA. My advise? Get it right the first time.

    Gabriela reminds me of the talent and sound of Eva Cassidy... She can sing anything! I've been using what you teach, Ken, and I've found my range and sound is better than it ever was. Just imagine if I actually took the course.... needs to be on my priority list. I just sing at church, but God deserves amazing quality even more than a bar gig.

    Our coach in madrigals in high school she said all of this. She was with the Va. Opera! She was over compressing and not controlling her air! I heard it in the first part of the video! You have too have control your voice! Enjoy your talent and make it work for you!

    • @kentamplin

      Yes, Kennith. Over-singing or Over-compressing the vocal cords is really bad for your voice. Just the right amount of compression can help your voice to last a lifetime.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  6 лет назад +1

      Awesome, Fin! You can easily sing any pop that you want, as well. KTVA just gives you the capability to really ROCK if that's how you want to sing. It's much easier to sing the less-demanding vocals, but you have to really train to sing in a Rock style safely.
