How To Sing Like Freddie Mercury - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Freddie Mercury will always be remembered for his uniqueness and versatility and Queen were really pioneers when it came to doing the anthemic choruses they are known for.
What are some other bands can you think of that also were characterized by their use of anthemic rock?
Let me know in the comments!
In this video I'll explain the techniques and elements Freddie used so you can see how to get to those same places.
We'll look at how we can achieve that same phrase singing by controlling our breathing, as well as how we can replicate his same sensitivity by adding a little air to our sound..

Freddie's early voice on "Killer Queen", "Nevermore." Amazing.
Indeed!
I'm not a singer, neither do I want to learn. But these videos of yours always kinda make me stronger inside. I love to watch you explain all that stuff, Ken. You are full of power. Keep doing it!
I'm so glad!
Freddie Mercury is number 1 singer in the world
Rock on!
@@kentamplin 🤘
Totally agree about Marc Martel. Adam is great and I love his solo stuff but for me he goes about Queen songs in a pop/soul direction, which doesn't sit well with my ears. Freddie was more dramatic and operatical. I know Queen chose Adam exactly because he doesn't sound like Freddie but I prefer Marc.
Thanks for the visit, Jo! Appreciate the comment!
Mercury's voice is like a tied wild animal. Most of the time, he tames his voice. But the strong animal is ready to break the chain. This is felt in his voice. And then there are times when the animal is released. Just for a short while. And then he ties him back to the chain. The animal need up and wants out. This can be heard from his voice. A like Formula 1 at the start before racing. Is hear the big power of engine. But accelerator force the engine down on base speed.
Freddie definitely had a powerful bad-ass voice!
Freddy was a true original. He could sell the song and take you with him wherever the song would go. Your singing and explaining are fantastic! Much of what you teach reminds me of techniques I learned from Elizabeth Sabine in North Hollywood back in the day.
Glad you're here, gearjmr!
Title: How to sing like Freddie Mercury. "Marc Martel has entered the chat"
Thanks for the visit, Xander!
Marc is good at doing Freddie's middle 70's voice, but he does not have the power in his voice for Freddie's later stuff.
@@ZENOBlAmusic what do you mean power? marc has power in his voice.
@@huss2600 yes but not Freddie's power
This is golden information on Freddie's singing. He was one of a kind.
Totally...I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'll pay your bills from now on. Hahah. You're the sweetest Ken, I'm honoured to see this! :)
My pleasure, Dino!! 😀
I've heard where people said Freddie's unique overbite lent to his unique tone. Any thoughts?
I know he was concerned that fixing his teeth might change his sound. Anatomy does play a role in your overall sound. He had a bigger jaw, extra teeth, larger mouth and utilized false cords. He was special. A magical, musical unicorn, I guess.
I dont think his teeth not being straight affected his sound a lot
@@sunsundks3891 I think what they are referring to is his overbite/size of rooth of his mouth and overall facial structure.
It didn't have any effect on it although he thought it did...
Oh When I saw the length of the video 26 min 🙏😱 as I discover more and more about him I am more and more enchanted.. for example “ Father to Son “ Live at the Rainbow ... Thank you Dear Ken 💜🌺 And Thank you Darling Freddie , when I listen to you, the power , the emotion , the Love , the pain the loneliness, the joy and the fun flow to me . You are a flame of energy really, born to be on stage 💕💕 Rest in Love dear 24.11. we remember 💗
Yes we do.
It is just so difficult to shift from falsetto to that powerful aggressive yet high range voice. You do it well. I am same register as you and can't even dream of it lol. There were other singers like Dio, Plant, and even modern day singers who have similar vocal strength and quality to Freddie, but, IMO he is a slightly better songwriter, which allowed him to show a more versatile vocal potential, because you write songs that fit your singing style. He had the songwriting strength of a Lou Reed or Leonard Cohen combined with the vocal strength of the best singers. That's why we may never see another one lol.
Don't give up, Emil!
DINO!!! Oh my God. I'm gonna fall in love 😱what a voice! He will be on my favorites list soon!
Glory7RedemptionPrincess 👍
You funny!! In a very entertaining way. We know you are a fantastic singer but I have to tell you, I also really enjoy hearing your different language dialect impersonations!!! I grew up in England, with a British mother, so I've got the British dialects down pat and actually had to teach myself "Americanism" when I got back to the States (high school pressure and wanting to fit in). But I can flip back and forth in a heartbeat!! Thank you!!
Wow, thank you!
Hey Ken, I would love for you do a reaction to Marc Martel and The Ultimate Queen Celebration Under Pressure. It is awesome Covid edition
Good suggestion!
Makes you really appreciate how phenomenal Freddie was. G.O.A.T. 😃
And, how emotional Freddie sang every song! 💕
Yes indeed!
I wait for these. Always puts a smile on my face. Absolutely golden info!
I'm glad you liked it!
It's okay, Ken, that you didn't fast-forward that part. I know I didn't. And wow, all of this is fascinating, the explanations and demonstrations of Freddie's singing. I was a fan back in the Seventies and you are right, many bands back then had a big vocal sound and I liked Grand Funk for that.
Thanks for listening, Robb!
Fantastic job on this one. And Queen in the 70s was epic. I think your girls did great. And yes Freddie lived his music. Sara have amazing potential. And Brazil have a superstar soon
Awesome! Thanks, Erik!
Freddie Mercury is definitely one of my all time favorite singers! This helps me understand how to sing like him! Thank you Ken and God Bless!
Awesome! Great to hear!
Love you ken thanks for all the tips x
Sorry one more comment. I can imagine Sara doing a song for a James Bond movie. Haunting...
She'd be great!
I liked Alyona's style. But if i wanna compare anyone with Freddie you know its really hard. Freddie was unique.

I think it’s really cool that you gave your viewers a little glimpse of some of the KTVA singing technique taught in the course through your demonstration in this video. Hopefully that will inspire people who watched this video to purchase the course because guys, it really does work if you’re patient with it and work it daily over and over at least 5-6 days a week. And the awesome part is that the course can literally last you a lifetime. Also, a recommendation I have for a vocal coach reaction video is Smokey Robinson
Thanks so much, Steven!!
You're very welcome, Ken!
Freddies vocals are legendary!
You got that straight...a total legend!
This is so interesting you have so much information about singing and so much detail, excellent.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the tips, ken. Always worthy content

Thanks Ken!! I loved the video! Freddie is one of my hero’s and your video of you singing in his style convinced me to buy your course and now a year later I can actually feel I’ve improved so thank you so much!

Great to hear!
Loved the, Freddie was a talent that comes around maybe once a lifetime.

Sara ROCKED the Show Must Go On!
I agree with you, Summer!
You should watch Ally’s version. That might be the best cover of that song ever. She has her own RUclips channel.
You did a perfect job
Wow! You're too kind, Mohammed!
Sara is fantastic. She is my favorite.
Here in Brazil, with someone like her, we say It is a point outside the curve.
So glad you enjoy Sara!
What a video! Ken, You are opening our eyes on how incredible human voice may sound. Bravissimo !

Ken, it's amazing how you can sing Freddie and also Elvis with so much control, I am really impressed. Very well done. I am following your e-mails and videos as well. Thanks for everything.

Thanks, BadPlo! I've been singing a loooong time.
Freddie Mercury had great technique! I wish Ken would do a feature on Tony Williams of the Platters, he had fantastic technique like Mercury...
Ken, man you sing so great, cool and rocker!!! you should record many many songs! you voice is so unique and personality, loved it man, so warm rock and style, very different. I live in the forest in the Rocks Mountains. When I look out the forest is perfect, rocks, bent trees, logs with knots, and it’s “perfect “ what I am learning from you is so is the human voice... warts and all ...

You have a way of explaining that even I can get it.
Hahahaha! I'm glad to hear that! Rock on!
Don’t mean to sound like a broken record Ken sorry lol but please do Maynard James Keenan of Tool 🤘🏻
Noted, Dennis! 👍
Dino is a flipping beast! Also doesn't hurt that he's a super handsome dude!

Great video as usual. Freddie was unique. I remember in the seventies my friends called me crazy for listening to QUEEN, now 40 years later those who are still alive think that they made great music. I´ve talked before of a very little know singer that also died very young that i would like you to look at. It was called Jan Werner Danielsen.
Keep the good work
Thanks for listening! 👍
Really great analysis. Freddie was master at changing the colour and tone of his voice to fit a song, and to add nuance. There is also obviously a lot of aggression. Freddie had a great tone, so these techniques might not work for every tone of voice. I think Alyona's cover is definitely the best by far out of the three options. Freddie did not use that much vibrato on Queen's final album where The Show Must Go On comes from, his voice lost some power in that final year before his death. The Show Must Go On is not a triumphant song, it seems like Alyona really understood the true message in the song. The song is about accepting or coming to terms with what is to come. Freddie did not sound dramatic in the first verse of the song, he sounds resigned to his ultimate fate, the song is bittersweet, it is about making that last final effort before death, there is no happy ending. You are not going to overcoming some big challenge, it is just that final effort before death. This is not We Are The Champions. It always feels wrong when singers tries to approach the song in that manner. I have seen Alyona's cover before I think she has one of the best covers of this song because she understood the message of the song, and conveyed the right emotion. It would be great if you could some other 80's song such as Who Wants To Live Forever or Princes Of The Universe, a song which everyone really struggles to sing is surprisingly I Wants To Break Free, Adam is quite a high tenor and he lowers this song by 2 semitones when he performs it.
Well said, Zenobia!
Love Alyana and Dino. You guys rock!!!
Awesome!!
Fredsie really was otherworldly
He was!
The great Freddie Mercury

What settings/FX you have on the mixer there.. compression? Thank you ❤
Hey Ken! Great video. I love Sara and Alyona! Both beautiful and incredible singers. What can i say about Freddie? We definitely lost him way too soon. Freddie was one of a kind. He was a great singer and an outstanding frontman. My favorite performance has to be Live Aid. The set that Queen did was amazing. You would think that it was a Queen concert because Freddie had the whole crowd going absolutely crazy! Simply a phenomenal performance.
Well said!

21:00 When Freddie recorded "The Show Must Go On" he practically knew he was going to die (he died about a year after he recorded the song more or less). Freddie maintained an amazing vocal up until the very last moment. Just listen to "Mother Love" the last ever song recorded song by Freddie, it just gives me goosebumps to know that he was singing that high and that amazing, and he was in pain. Brian May said that during the recording of that last song, Freddie drank a glass of vodka or something and he was able to nail the vocal. Unfortunately he wasn't able to finish the song as he was too tired. Brian had to sing the last verse as Freddie was not able to finish it.
A real tragedy. Gone too soon.
Can you do Lou Reed sometime? He's a good example of your saying "A singer is a singer only if....."
Both girls did great. The second girl's (foreign?) accent sort of comes out on the ending of some phrases/notes, but it sounds cool anyway. If the first girl could move down a few keys, that would be really close to freddie. I don't think it lacks emotion.
The second girl is Sara Loera. She's from Southern California.
He was a vocal virtuoso! Was he classically trained or just had prodigious talent? Curious if classical training would help a singer who sings in a different genre-rock or jazz?
I believe he had some training, while in boarding school, but I don't think he studied voice, per se.
I believe he only had piano training at boarding school. Gonna have to look it up!
I think you're right! Thank you!
I get pneumonia, I do not know how you sing through that. I can hardly breathe to talk. Lol. Great job on the nuances of Freddie's voice.
By the way love your fiery dragon shirt. You can send it to me....
