How To Sing Like Freddie Mercury - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Freddie Mercury will always be remembered for his uniqueness and versatility and Queen were really pioneers when it came to doing the anthemic choruses they are known for.
What are some other bands can you think of that also were characterized by their use of anthemic rock?
Let me know in the comments!
In this video I'll explain the techniques and elements Freddie used so you can see how to get to those same places.
We'll look at how we can achieve that same phrase singing by controlling our breathing, as well as how we can replicate his same sensitivity by adding a little air to our sound..

Totally agree about Marc Martel. Adam is great and I love his solo stuff but for me he goes about Queen songs in a pop/soul direction, which doesn't sit well with my ears. Freddie was more dramatic and operatical. I know Queen chose Adam exactly because he doesn't sound like Freddie but I prefer Marc.

Mercury's voice is like a tied wild animal. Most of the time, he tames his voice. But the strong animal is ready to break the chain. This is felt in his voice. And then there are times when the animal is released. Just for a short while. And then he ties him back to the chain. The animal need up and wants out. This can be heard from his voice. A like Formula 1 at the start before racing. Is hear the big power of engine. But accelerator force the engine down on base speed.

I know he was concerned that fixing his teeth might change his sound. Anatomy does play a role in your overall sound. He had a bigger jaw, extra teeth, larger mouth and utilized false cords. He was special. A magical, musical unicorn, I guess.

It is just so difficult to shift from falsetto to that powerful aggressive yet high range voice. You do it well. I am same register as you and can't even dream of it lol. There were other singers like Dio, Plant, and even modern day singers who have similar vocal strength and quality to Freddie, but, IMO he is a slightly better songwriter, which allowed him to show a more versatile vocal potential, because you write songs that fit your singing style. He had the songwriting strength of a Lou Reed or Leonard Cohen combined with the vocal strength of the best singers. That's why we may never see another one lol.

Hopefully that will inspire people who watched this video to purchase the course because guys, it really does work if you’re patient with it and work it daily over and over at least 5-6 days a week. And the awesome part is that the course can literally last you a lifetime. Also, a recommendation I have for a vocal coach reaction video is Smokey Robinson

Really great analysis. Freddie was master at changing the colour and tone of his voice to fit a song, and to add nuance. There is also obviously a lot of aggression. Freddie had a great tone, so these techniques might not work for every tone of voice. I think Alyona's cover is definitely the best by far out of the three options. Freddie did not use that much vibrato on Queen's final album where The Show Must Go On comes from, his voice lost some power in that final year before his death. The Show Must Go On is not a triumphant song, it seems like Alyona really understood the true message in the song. The song is about accepting or coming to terms with what is to come. Freddie did not sound dramatic in the first verse of the song, he sounds resigned to his ultimate fate, the song is bittersweet, it is about making that last final effort before death, there is no happy ending. You are not going to overcoming some big challenge, it is just that final effort before death. This is not We Are The Champions. It always feels wrong when singers tries to approach the song in that manner. I have seen Alyona's cover before I think she has one of the best covers of this song because she understood the message of the song, and conveyed the right emotion. It would be great if you could some other 80's song such as Who Wants To Live Forever or Princes Of The Universe, a song which everyone really struggles to sing is surprisingly I Wants To Break Free, Adam is quite a high tenor and he lowers this song by 2 semitones when he performs it.

21:00 When Freddie recorded "The Show Must Go On" he practically knew he was going to die (he died about a year after he recorded the song more or less). Freddie maintained an amazing vocal up until the very last moment. Just listen to "Mother Love" the last ever song recorded song by Freddie, it just gives me goosebumps to know that he was singing that high and that amazing, and he was in pain. Brian May said that during the recording of that last song, Freddie drank a glass of vodka or something and he was able to nail the vocal. Unfortunately he wasn't able to finish the song as he was too tired. Brian had to sing the last verse as Freddie was not able to finish it.

Both girls did great. The second girl's (foreign?) accent sort of comes out on the ending of some phrases/notes, but it sounds cool anyway. If the first girl could move down a few keys, that would be really close to freddie. I don't think it lacks emotion.

    • @kentamplin

The second girl is Sara Loera. She's from Southern California.

He was a vocal virtuoso! Was he classically trained or just had prodigious talent? Curious if classical training would help a singer who sings in a different genre-rock or jazz?
