How To Sing Like Robert Plant - Led Zeppelin - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Robert Plant was able to bring such a unique sound to his singing while setting the bar so high for difficult, high range singing.
The charismatic frontman to Led Zeppelin helped create the "rock god" archetype with both his image and his powerful and wide vocal range.
I'm going to show you some of the different places that he got to when singing that might not be quite what you think they are, and I'll show you how you can get to those places too.
We'll explore examples of both his more acoustic/folk approach, as well as his hard rock singing as we look at some of the techniques he uses.
I'll discuss how we can grow our chest, head and mixed voice to be able to match his tonal qualities, as I demonstrate it myself and then show how KTVA student Kati Cher does it.
I hope you all find the video to be helpful and informative and please be sure to share what you thought in the comments section!

See when a vocal coach can actually sing the songs that he is reacting to. This my friends is credibility. Kati is pure fire. Such a boss
The proof is in the singing! Kati is awesome!
Haha thank you 😅🤘
Robert Plant was a vocal monster in his prime. Great video
He was awesome!
@@kentamplin Is!
I still really love Plant's voice now. The stuff he did bluegrassy with Krauss, and he had that Zep reunion a few years ago. Not as powerful, but still a voice made for rock and roll.
Agreed. On “dazed and confused” he’s an absolute force of nature. Always wanted to be able to sing along but thats something I don’t know anyone could replicate
Ah well, Robert Plant.. maybe not technically perfect from a voice perspective, but absolutely unique as far as conveying emotion. Many have copied him but none sound like him. Imperfection = Unique Style and Sound
Thank you. Well said!
I love Plant's interview he gave when he claims the singer for Greta Von Fleet stole his voice. haha
It would be hard to have that now. in 2020, they would protool and eq him to some soft/round tonality good for AGT and X-factor.
Greta van fleet?
@@silasmabra270 kkkk really
Anyone else get those goosebumps hearing "Since I've Been Loving You"? 🤘🖤
Me.
You killed it as usual, Ken!

Meeee! It's my unique and favorite love song ever!!
There might be "better" singers; I don't know. Maybe it's all relative. Dio, Mercury, whoever. But Plant, in my opinion, has the *best* voice for rock and roll in history. His voice with Jimmy's guitar is just amazing. And, as always, Ken did an amazing job getting to that range. That "Immigrant Song" bit gave me chills. Great job!
Thanks, ApplachiaMarv!
Robert Plant pre voice blowout was a crazy powerful singer. There is a bootleg of I think “Black Dog” where his mic cut and you could still barely hear him singing with the rest of the band playing behind him. Great Job on breaking down his various techniques.
Thank you, chevy!
Robert Plant in the first 3-4 years was untouchable. So much power, especially Led Zeppelin 1, specially Dazed and Confused.
What-a-singer that you are! Hats off.
You have it all and most of all... You still got it! I'm 49 and I know what it takes to stay in such shape.
Total respect. They should hire you in music universities.
I salute you, Master.
Thank you, Alberto!
Robert plant had a great voice in 69 - 71. Very powerful voice.
Robert! Seen him live many times. With Page and as a solo act. Robert is one of the greatest frontmen ever. Zeppelin is in my top 6 favorite bands of all time. Robert's voice is so distinctive and recognizable. I think i've said this before but i will repeat it. All the women want him and all the men want to be him. Robert Plant is a great great singer, not only in his Zeppelin days but also today. Ken, you have the sounds of Robert which are cool. Kati has the rasp in her voice for Robert vocals. Kati can rock anything! I love her. Great video Ken. As always KEEP ROCKIN!🎤🎤🎤
Well said.
@@kentamplin Thank you Ken!
Thanks so much! 🙏
@@KatiCherOfficial You are so welcome Kati. You rock!❤
@@jeffschielka7845 Yes she does. I was kucky enough to stumble upon her cover of Black Dog. i immediately became a fan. Very few impress me when they attempt to sing any thing of Robert Plants . Miss Katie is excellent. And oh my goodness she's Smokin' 🔥Hot!:
‘Since I’ve been loving you’ blew me away.
Thanks so much, purpleryder!
Plant in his prime. Best voice in rock hands down.
Rock on, George!
Pre 72...could be best ever in rock...after 72 he was very good but lost his top end except in the studio under controlled environment and still not quite as high as pre 72
Zeppelin was so great, difficult to replicate, for sure.
Rock on!
This man is the BEST TEACHER you could ask for!!!!!!. Ive been under his wing for 6months, and I SEE RESULTS!! I was putting in 1-2 hrs warm ups, then 3-4 hours of singing songs about 5-6 days/week.( One day you'll notice me when im famous KEN.!! Cant wait to show you one day THAT THE NEW ROBERT PLANT WILL RISE!!)
Wow! You're too kind! Thank you!
Love this vid, you and Katie!
Yay! Thank you!
Great job, Ken. And your detailed descriptions are much appreciated.
Thank you kindly!
Fantastic! Thank you!
Love the Zeppelin videos!!! You do a great job singing those!
Glad you like them!
This is extremely rare especially when I'm looking up metal stuff, however, your smile alone made me like and subscribe. Super rare and totally excited about this video.
This is giving me waaay to much joy for a tutorial. Thanks, on multiple levels. x
I'm so glad, Kenvin!
I see when you watch yourself, you look so proud, and YOU SHOULD, years and years of hard work, You see people, hard work, practice, and singing correctly, will give you a life long vocal instrument, and the willingness to learn can only benefit, Love ya Ken!! Hope all is well Brother!
I appreciate that, T0MMY!
Wow sir, well done! such an amazing gifted teacher in how you break things down. You rock, period. I've been on the fence for so long to develop a singing voice. It's a bunch of insecurity, lack of instruction, and experience. Been playing guitar for 30+ yrs and have always wanted to sing and play. Thank you Ken for sharing your knowledge and experience, bless you!
What have you got to lose? kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
WELL DONE KEN!!
Rock on!
To even do justice to Plant and you did, is amazing. (Love your Radar recording rig, btw.) Even after Plant lost a lot of range in 73' (some claim a disregarded cold in 72' was the culprit) songs like Kashmir still feature high notes.
Excellent job as usual.
Thanks so much, Allan!
OUTSTANDING Examples Ken…Thanks
You got a great voice , Ken!
I'm so glad you think so!
Awesome throughout!
Glad you enjoyed it, Kevin!
Thank you Ken. Robert is my favorite. ♥️
Thanks for listening!
Love your vids ken i love your voice ive got a similar range to roberts but i cant sustain it any tips ive managed to figure out mix voice i just need the rasp and the stamina

You’ve got a great approach! Anyone who can even remotely hold a candle to Robert deserves his recognition👏👏👏
I don't believe for one second that I could sing anywhere near as well as you but I salute your amazing talent! I am not THE Steve Morse I just play his signature guitar....I am subscribed to your channel.
I luv the plain language and "comparing" to other artists makes it easier to understand. Rock On!
Awesome! Happy to hear that!
Hi Ken, bought your course in April. I'm super happy about the results so far! I've been doing a kareoke app, and have been encouraging my team to check out your RUclips channel. If you get any referrals from Tony Lightning that's me! Thanks your course is great...
Fantastic!
I have heard so many cover bands butcher Roberts vocals that when I hear someone crush it, I get frisson, and I go, “oh yeah...all right..ah.. ah... aaahhh”. Thank you🙏
Thanks, Tony!
this video just taught me how this all works wow i never looked at it like this :O
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy no worries! Would love to hear you do more Led Zep...Not easy that but well done! 👍
KEN you're helping me appreciate and like Led Zeppelin
Glad to hear that, Kofijeff!
Amazing!❤
Thank you! 😄
They were so great
Dude, you Killed it on since I've been loving you.!
Wow! Thanks!
@@kentamplin And that's blues, hence slow, & one thing I know about guitar playing is slow playing is often harder than fast playing, I would mebbe guess singing could be the same. Easier to see-find a goof. Anyway, I really liked that, & I think that that is without question one of the best Blues pieces ever, & it would be very easy to say, well it's not exactly like the original, so it's not that great, but in this case, it killed, great job.
Awesome demonstrations Ken your doing great at singing like him kati does an awesome job to demonstrating also great demonstrations man 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Ken I did enjoy it man always do
My all-time favorite singer. Thank you Ken!
My pleasure, Tony!
Ha! I was just annoying my family yesterday making dinner singing Whole Lotta Love. Extra spicy high notes for eye rolls.
Love that!
Sweet
Very cool and you picked some of my all time favorite Zeppelin tunes. They are definitely are one of the bands i wish i could've seen live. Unfortunately i was only 3 when we lost John. I did get to see Page/Plant in 98 though.
Rock on!
I've always noticed that whine and some yodeling in Plant's music and style back then. Glad you pointed out his reasoning and technique behind it. Very cool!
Thanks for listening!
I'm auditioning for a Led Zep covers band in NZ and this is useful. A lot of the whine in Plant's voice sounds thin to me so this helps with where I could beef it up a bit without losing the essence of the original songs.
Very cool!!
Awesome!
Good job. For teaching. All of us ken
Thank you, Mary!
One of my favorite bands. Love Robert and Zeppelin. His voice is very distinctive and so unique. Great job explaining on the video. 🤘
Thanks, Dog Mom!
this song is a masterpiece
Thanks for watching, Karma 9 official!
Oh Ken, that's not fair. My entire life if you would ask me who I wanted to sound like, it would be Robert Plant.
I hope this helped, Sean!
Ken, I have been listening to Plant and trying to emulate him since I was 7 years old when my hippie aunt Mary first spun the vinyl back in 70' and I have to tell you brother that this is the absolute best rendition of Since I've Been Loving You I ever heard you actually did a better job than Plant himself in his own studio recording and I just about fell off my chair as I'm sure Robert would have as well whill turning green wit envy. The only suggestion that I would make which seems strange but to a long time Robert Plant fan what I think young aspiring singers need is a Ken Tamplin video with all due respect to Robert titled "how not to destroy your voice like Robert plant did" because it was a great tragedy because by 1973 he lost about half of his range and he just learned how to sort of fake some falsetto here and there later on but the real tragedy is the movie The Song Remains the Same he had just destroyed his voice during a sound check in Chicago just weeks before and if you listen to the bootleg where he sings a bunch of 50s Tunes during the sound check he just went all out pushing himself incredibly hard then the next night at Chicago Stadium he basically sounded like he had laryngitis but with tens of thousands of people of course he had to push through it anyway that probably is the real reason why his voice went because they had tour dates in he could not simply cancel show after show after show because his voice needed to heal if he even hinted that he wanted to do that their psychopathic 6'6" 350lb tour manager Peter Grant probably would have ripped him a new one lol... Anyways absolute fantastic lesson as usual I purchased your course for Christmas for me and my wife and have been working on it whenever we can and it is helping enormously you are the best!
Thanks so much, I sure appreciate that!
Ken..much love and respect for u👍👍👍i'm learning a lot from u

I saw Robert at Bourbon and Beyond last year. Heck, he can't even sing what he used to sing. Time changes everything. Still good.

your voice is so soothing thanks for the video Happy Tuesday
Thank you, Christine!
Hats of sir 🙌🏻 ur one in a million
Thanks, CHETAN andotra!
The 1970 LZIII recording of 'Since I've Been Loving You' IMO is Bobby Veg's greatest ever vocal (& a storming Jimmy Page arrangement to boot) which he never quite matched again.. He was only 23 remember so to do what you've done here Ken (with respect) at your age is extraordinary & a real tribute to your singing confidence as well as vocal control..
Outstanding..
Thank you Mark! Appreciate that!
My gosh ...since I’ve been loving you!!!! You rock sir!!!!
Thanks so much, Juan!
Certainly thank you for the video. I will say what I have said in the past, much of Roberts voice up until '74 was his accent being from West Bromwich. He admits back in the day the PA's weren't that good and he basically had to scream. It wasn't until after the first surgery that he realized he had to control his voice.
Thank you.
his voice is/was like an engine worked on high rpms (from 1968/1973) then it dropped, like timing belts/chains/etc on a car.......he got it back in 1979........in some cases in the 90s it even got higher
Ken you can hit the notes (and then some) I still struggle with anybody apart from Plant himself singing Zep even on a bad day and that’s just a personal thing. You are awesome.
Thanks, BAT HEAVY!
KILLER lesson! Thx Ken.
Cheers from Chicago,
-Z
I'm glad it was helpful, Zach!
been watching vocal coaching since dis pandemic lockdown started, this 1 is great, tnx
👍😊
Hey Kenny. Noddy Holder would have to be a challenge for anyone. Unlike, say, Jimmy Barnes or Brian Johnson, his high register didn't dissipate into that fuzzy growl. It remained effortlessly powerful. He actually sounded as though he was powered by some kind of machine. I attended Slade concerts and his power and range remained undiminished after three hours and a bottle of Johnny. I still think he had one of the most remarkable voices I've ever heard - doesn't matter what anyone thought of Slade songs (I thought most of them were great!).
Thanks, Robert. Appreciate your thoughts.
Ken ur such a vibe😌❤️
Thanks

Kati has one of the best controlled voice dynamics while staying in tune. By varying but controlled, her voice sounds fuller and softer as needed. Makes her crescendos and decrescendos memorable. Truly breath taking to listen to. You do well too Ken. But she is gorgeous. Sorry.
She's awesome, John!

Please do a reaction to Robert Plant singing 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert with some commentary on how he sang it compared to Freddie.
Thanks for the suggestion, Dervia!
Hey Ken, I have sort of a weird vocal issue. I sing alright whenever I’m not recording but whenever I record myself I tend to make mistakes with my pitch (sometimes really silly ones I never make otherwise). I don’t do it around people just on recording. And I don’t mean I listen to the recording and hear mistakes (although I do that too) I mean I hear myself make mistakes while singing during recording, but when I turn the video off I can hit notes again. Have you ever encountered something like this with a student or even perhaps yourself. I have come a long ways since I first started singing (not a natural ability), not good yet but no longer terrible. Thank you in advance
