    I always loved how husky his early tone was...and then how he evolved out from there...live sadly by 1971 his "young voice" was going away. He'd gotten ill while touring Japan and never seemed to fully recover from that. But as you said...as he went along he found killer new ways to use his voice. I think by 75' he was doing great stuff live again...and I really love the last few years of Zeppelin and how he sang live. Thanks Chris!!

    This song has a brutal tessitura. Nice job Chris. Plant is very tough to emulate. He has such a unique timbre. He uses a lot of Cry in his vocals.

  • @elgringo5137
    @elgringo5137 4 года назад +14

    The way Plant could stretch his voice so thin is shocking! If you listen to a lot of his pre-Zep material, he has a low, dark, and heavy voice; sounds like arrangements you might expect from a young Tom Jones. How could such a heavy voice also be light (and yet powerful)? I guess the world may never know.

    You're an inspiration to me at this point, for real. The way you put yourself out there...you give it all you got. I heard some vulnerability in your voice today, which I really liked. By that I mean staying close to your break point during much of the song. That song is way outta my league! Keep going; I can't believe you're providing us with such an amazing content. Cheers from Brazil

    I have a suggestion for your "sing like…" series: to analyze the styles of more diverse kinds of singers. Rod Stewart (that amazing sweet grip), Mark Lanegan, Danzig(!)… I mean, people that go beyond the high pitch/screaming performances.
    It may help baritones and basses to start to explore more their ranges and not get fixated on "you can only sing rock this or that way". BTW, congratulation on the Zeppelin cover!

    Hi Chris. Love your lessons. Also bought your course. I was wondering about something today. I heard a song in the radio today by the weeknd called blinding lights. And in the chorus he sings in a kinda high voice which I can't identify as mixed or just head voice? I tried to sit down with my acoustic guitar and sing it, but I find that when I sing in my mixed voice it sounds to powerful. Maybe I need to streghthen my head voice or something, but I find that I have trouble singing high "softly" like he does in that chorus. Do you have any ideas to what I can do to improve? And what technique does he use?

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  4 года назад +1

      I agree that can be tough! Singing highly and lightly... It helps me to take cues from Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke. Both of these guys have amazingly well supported head voices with good closure! AND they have a light approach to mix. Have you checked out my vides on both of those guys yet? Glad to have you in the course! Thanks for your support!!

    Hey Chris! Very thankful to be able to learn freely from you and your way of teaching is very easy to follow and not intimidating in the slightest so it's helped me really be able to harness my own voice. So thank you for that! I was wondering if you would ever be interested in analyzing Shannon Hoon's voice? Blind Melon is one of my biggest inspirations in writing my own music and I'd love to be able to better understand his approach to singing if something like that appeals to you. I'd recommend giving the entirety of Soup (1995) a listen if you've never heard it before, he has really intriguing sounds on that album that remind me of a Janis Joplin/Robert Plant/Neil Young blend. Thanks for taking the time to read this if you do!

    Were you straining at any time during singing this? I thought I noticed tiny short moments where you started to sound like I do when I start to tense up - which happens very fast and I cant get out of it after that anymore 😄 Also interesting to see/hear that you need to find ways to get through songs in this range. I always thought you could easily sing stuff like that. Maybe I should start to realize, that I shouldnt try to sing above my range all the time 😄 Might solve some problems. Great video like always!

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  4 года назад +4

      I did have moments where I really had to check my tension... and you can see it! Especially on those faster phrased (lots of consonants) sections I talk about in the reaction part of the video. This song is harder for me to sing that The Day I Tried To Live, or even Immigrant Song because it's in that middle mix area for me. But I don't mind tryin' and showing the struggle... that's part of what helps me learn and teach, is putting it out there and showing that it's ok to struggle, it's what you do with it!

I love Chris Cornell and Layne Staley and all the other greats but Plant's voice is so powerful despite it being so high... even Chris Cornell sounds small compared to Plant. The only rock singer who can compare to Plant is maybe Freddie Mercury.
