Thought you'd appreciate this. I read a quote somewhere from Cornell where he says learning to sing requires getting in a room by yourself and getting uninhibited and just see what sounds you can make. Seems on point.
Ok, so I’ve been singing over 10 years in various styles and could never do the “Chris Cornell” sound. After 5 minutes of practicing this technique I am hitting notes I’ve never dreamed of. I’m testing it out on all sorts of 80s Hair Metal songs and it totally works! My mind is BLOWN!!! Dude, you are honestly the best vocal coach online right now cause you don’t care about sounding like a dying cat as long as it gets you to where you want to sound. I really love your videos and I’ve even purchased Ken Tamplin stuff in the past that didn’t help much. Thank you so much for being so humble and awesome.
You know what's amazing? In Chris's prime with soundgarden he literally would sound perfect for entire concerts, obviously after all that time of playing his heart out during audioslave he had a little bit of trouble doing that live again. Some people will never understand how great he was
Audioslave happened at a time when he was coming out of rehab, and not doing very well in a lot of ways. The energy it takes to sing like that is as much a soul thing as a voice thing (I imagine). Saw him in Soundgarden at a festival in Sydney with multiple stages and you could not just hear but feel his voice over the top of several bands at once. He was the fucking greatest.
This explains all the coughing when I sing Cornell. Thought I was overdoing it. Turns out, it's furballs I'm coughing up! Great video, dude. Thanks for the info.
I read somewhere that Chris Cornell's singing voice had the quality of the natural crying baby voice, which is so tiny and yet so powerful. If you have had a baby in the house and he is hungry, needing a bath or just sleepy, you know they can be louder than a siren.
believe it or not. chris was growing up and driving his car/being alone doing sounds like this. its a real universal technique. experimenting wit the human voice.
My husband was a good friend of Christophers & learned loads from him over the years. Christopher was obviously a huge & very natural talent, but he'd worked incredibly hard for years to be that good. He did also know a lot about singing technique & had studied under a well respected vocal coach for sometime to learn how to improve his stamina on tour as after the GnR tour I think it was 92 he was getting fairly severe vocal fatigue. It worked & after this his studio confidence grew & his longevity live also was much improved. I think actually Layne also went to the same guy out on the lake for vocal training. Perhaps a shame Ed never did as he does look very annoyed with himself these days when he can't do what he wants to. Though it kinda doesn't matter, Ed was always warts & all perhaps these days it's his gravitas as a human that keeps us all listening. Great vid, really enjoyed it, cheers!
Thanks for sharing. This is a question that I always keep asking. How do rock stars evolve? It's not just a gift. I'm reading Cornell's biography. And this is really a part that goes unnoticed. And imagine his dedication, because for a long time, in addition to the band, he had a steady job
I keep coming back to this video. I can sing a couple of Chris Cornell songs. I can sing most any AIC song. And I must say that 90% IS technique. 10% is introspection. But that is a BIG 10%. And it takes 100% confidence to get there because of the process you have to go through to find those notes. Chris, your videos and lessons are the ONLY lessons that have ever helped me along this journey. I appreciate what you do very much.
Best vocal coach! Hands down. Chris Cornell is my biggest inspiration in song writing and singing. I find your unorthodox way of explaining and teaching to be way easier to pick up on. Who needs to know the science of their vocal chords when you can just achieve the desired result by scaring your neighbors and sounding like a dying cat. 10/10
Dude he's my favorite singer of all time also. I can't believe I'm writing this because since Chris's passing I can hardly even bring myself to even listen to Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of The Dog or any of his solo stuff. I'm so glad and feel fortunate I was able to see him live here in Portland Maine with Audioslave. He sounded so good and had quit smoking cigarettes and he was just so full of energy. It was such a great show and they even played 2 Rage Against The Machine songs, "Killing in the Name", and "Bulls on Parade". It was so freaking Rad! Chris was jumping up and down like a madman with his leather boots. I'll never forget it. I love you and miss you Chris. Gone way to soon, but with us forever.
Man.... you got a great voice and a nice way to spread what you know. Thanks for sharing! And thanks for respecting such a deep and complex artist as Chris Cornell. Peace.
This has helped immensely. I'm a Fresh Graduate with My B.S. in music tech and I'm a writer, engineer, and producer. Currently writing in a two piece and vocals as well as lyrics are our biggest hangup currently and I think you just handled 50% of that problem. Thanks my friend. I've sang for years, chamber choir, so many hours, the graphics and diagrams haven't worked but again, this video turned on a lightbulb.
I have been playing with the controlled scream/ “Hawk Call” of David Lee Roth trying to add the distortion of Sammy Hagar, all along trying to find the pathway to Steve Perry, Peter Cetera, Miljenko Matijevic, Freddie Mercury and Chris Cornell, and I believe you have found one of the keys to the pathway here... vocal exploration is often times isolating a mouth and throat shape, and going to nature for these sounds is a great idea! I guess if I will ever unlock these secrets, it’s meow or never.
Dude screw all these hater comments. You are the closet sounding cover I've heard yet to Cris Cornell.. thank u for sharing your craft and best of luck on your singing career! You have a great voice..
Man this is incredible !! This meow technique is the shit !! You've discovered something that has surely been discovered before. TWO REASONS why I think this works so well. #1- Your opening up your voice box/larynx in a chromatic and thorough way and if you look deep in your throat as you rounding your notes, it is moving expanding at the top and in every way it possibly can it seems. Picture a tornado that is changing shapes top and bottom. Expanding and contracting sort of like a balloon but in waves. I couldn't sing shit. I was tired and voice was coated with crud. Did the meows up high and it instantly helps and after 2 to 3 minutes I could sing anything as if i was having my best day. AT 8 AM IN THE MORNING.
I am a professional Singer...trained classically, but been singing Rock/Blues,and Jazz for years...I LIKE THIS! GOOD ADVICE for Male or Female Singers!THANKS!
Yep, bang on. He uses a total different technique and you're a lot closer than other vocal coaches on here. I've been doing very similar for awhile now. If be interested if Chris stumbled across this technique or if he just sang that way. Easiest way to hit the higher notes, with distortion, but with that self preservation too.
I recently have had a trip with my voice; I discovered, something like two months ago, how to do mid/high pitched screaming without grating my vocal chords and not getting hurt, which led to me being able to control my diaphragm much better. So I started my discovery voyage into the world of singing without *sounding like a dying cat* and I've started hitting some high notes, but I still need some singing lessons to get stability. Hell, that was blog if I ever seen one. Nice video man, keep up the good work!
He said song writing was like tuning into a radio station. I guess it was a station ran by cats. On a serious tip....you know "The Zone"? Where in athletics or physically stressful event's you become Neo? I think that's what Cornell experienced but for song writing.

One of the reasons why I joined your channel, was because I was looking for warm ups to add to my routine. I’m just in shock, because we have a cat that loves it when we hit whatever note she hits. She actually meows more when we do that. We’ve noticed that it made that part of the voice that can’t be accessed with just a warm up like Ye Yaye Yo Ya with the five tone scale up and down. Anyway, we love how you do this! Keep it up!!!! BTW, we’re a little old school, so not sure who Chris Cornell is. You sound very young. But good stuff. I also loved the one where you were talking, and using pitch with your talking voice. Really great teaching, man.

yea yeah, you´re right .... i´m a drummer (but huge fan of chris voice) and your tenor voice sounds similar to jeff buckley ... another great musician of 90´s
I love early-mid 90's grunge, with Staley being my favorite (talk about power AND range!), with Vedder and Cornell right behind. But what a great story, with the morals being: 1. Inspiration can come from anywhere, even in the simplest, most innocent ways, and 2. I'm sure you were not happy about reading such a comment, but you took that anger (or whatever negative adjective fits) and processed it into something positive and your own. Again, great story, thanks for sharing.
Yep, the cat meow worked for me too, I never thought I could reach these notes like that. I had to stop the video and go watch the vocal fry one in the middle of this. So within 40 mins I can do it. Awesome Teacher Chris. You're amazing.
Bro I swear this is the most eye opening video I've seen with so many random cat noises. Deff checking out your course on the basis of this video alone.
Thanks Chris..I damaged my voice for singing without learning the proper technique..and have to quit singing..but your video help me get back into singing and hit the higher register, thanks Chris 🙏🙏🙏
Chris Cornell is my favorite vocalist as well as Andrew Wood and Maynard James Keenan, among others haha. Louder than Love is my favorite ep/album of theres!
I get what you're saying. It's similar with chino from deftones. His high notes aren't falsetto, they aren't full voice... they're somewhere in between. Like a closed throat whistle thing
Well its just great that you were able to figure it out by that comment. Its pretty genius actually and a great story. I'm sure Mr Cornell would have loved hearing it and sure he would have been immensely impressed hearing you sing. Great you were able to see him live also. Its really hard to tell his and your voices apart tbh when you sing in his great style. Thank you and glad I was able to see this video and looking forward to trying it tonight.

Meeeeeeeoooowwwww mmeeee ooooeeeeeeiiiii from my creaaaaaaaaaameawwwwww! Show me how to meaowwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Driving and meowing all his songs for years! He's still living as a cat in my heart! So happy to share same love with a Chris that loves Chris! Meeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaoooooaaaaaaaaaoooowwwwwwnnnnnnnnn! (Show me How to Meow)!
About using the critic of the "sounding like a Dying Cat" as a possibility to practice and discover a way to figure out a way to develop the desired voice tone: Your a GENIOUS. Loved that!
I've been really struggling trying to find a voice of singing voice I guess and oh my gosh the cat sound seriously opened up a whole new tone. We'll see what my wife thinks LOL thank you for the tip!
I tried singing with Chris at a concert when he played "Say Hello to Heaven". I had to stop at the end because I couldn't go 2 octaves higher. If you can do that song, I would love to see if you can do the end.
It took me three years of practice, in my truck, to go from meh to being able to sing a ton of my favorite songs well (Audioslave/old Chris stuff included)... Learn breath control, how to use your false cords, and learn to sing in all sorts of different styles, take what works for you from the RUclips voice lesson banquet, push your limit without straining too hard (passing out is a possibility, cord damage too), learn to relax your face... These are the things that helped me most...

Great direction for a character to sing from. I dont think any one in the music industry is doing this style of singing right meow
Dude such an insane amazing way of explaining it
Agreed.. greatest voice ever. I feel like i can do his low ranges well but like you described the power of the scream feel is so hard to hit and hold.. i'll definitely check out some more of your vids. Thanks.
Welcome to the channel! Done lots on Cornell... and another one is going up tomorrow :)
Outstanding... Cornell truly was the greatest. My hero as well sir. Ty for making this!
yea yeah, you´re right .... i´m a drummer (but huge fan of chris voice)
and your tenor voice sounds similar to jeff buckley ... another great musician of 90´s
My flatmates are gonna be so happy to hear me practicing this new technique lmeaow
Can you release a video on Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno.. His technique & style of his singing... & thanks for sharing lessons on vocal tips. 🙂
It seems like all Chris' voices are great. I wish my name was Chris..
Yep, the cat meow worked for me too, I never thought I could reach these notes like that. I had to stop the video and go watch the vocal fry one in the middle of this. So within 40 mins I can do it. Awesome Teacher Chris. You're amazing.
Chris Purrnell
Sorry, just had to… Cool video
Bro I swear this is the most eye opening video I've seen with so many random cat noises. Deff checking out your course on the basis of this video alone.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome. Glad it was helpful to you!
Hey Chris, I've used a few of your guitar lessons on Jamplay recently. I had no idea that you were a singer too! You're a hell of a guitar player btw!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for trying to teach the man's voice. You are a scholar of Chris Cornell and he is the legend
You've only gotta watch Hands All Over - Live 1990 in Germany to hear that this is right. You can totally hear all of this in early 90's/pre-90's SG.
Cant belive im doin this :D Chris is now in a beautiful place, full of light.
There's a light that never goes out
Go see Foo Fighters live, I swear Dave Grohl pushes harder live than on the record
Thats true - love them especially live
It's amazing he's pushing at least 20 years while doing that consistently on tour, pure rockstar
@@chaseclarkemusic yea, sadly it will crash down on him eventually. RIP the rock legend's future voice
Thanks Chris..I damaged my voice for singing without learning the proper technique..and have to quit singing..but your video help me get back into singing and hit the higher register, thanks Chris 🙏🙏🙏
Same here, he and Chester Bennington were my inspiration to go into singing from a young age
My wife ran in the room on me while watching the cat session, saying “WTF is going on in here”?!?!
This is very useful man thanks
Chris Cornell is my favorite vocalist as well as Andrew Wood and Maynard James Keenan, among others haha. Louder than Love is my favorite ep/album of theres!
He's my favorite as well. 51 yr old Aussie , thankyou. Subbed and notifications on.
I think the title of this video should be, How To Sing Like Chris Cornell's Cat
Chris and Layne. The greatest
Hey! You have found my secret!! Sing as a cat meowing all songs that I was trying to control and improve my range, being a girl and loving Cornell... big fan since always!
Love this 😝❤
Dude this was perfect, just with that cat thing I was already making more progress than months trying to get this sound, thank you
About using the critic of the "sounding like a Dying Cat" as a possibility to practice and discover a way to figure out a way to develop the desired voice tone: Your a GENIOUS. Loved that!
It's amazing how much better visuals work than mechanics when it comes to singing. Excellent video!
My new favorite RUclips vocal teacher!
I'm just very jealous that you had the privilege to see him live
the best video on internet, thank you God bless you.
😊🙏🏼
I've been really struggling trying to find a voice of singing voice I guess and oh my gosh the cat sound seriously opened up a whole new tone. We'll see what my wife thinks LOL thank you for the tip!
DAMN DUDE you got the vocals!!!!!!!!!!!
I tried singing with Chris at a concert when he played "Say Hello to Heaven". I had to stop at the end because I couldn't go 2 octaves higher. If you can do that song, I would love to see if you can do the end.
Take it or leave it? I'll take it. That's some amazing Chris Cornell vocal influence. For seriously.
How many people are meowing right now? So I just tried it and my cats freaked out!
This is a fantastic lesson AND it's hilarious lol
He's my favorite vocalist of all time as well.
