Layne Staley - Alice In Chains - Man In The Box - Isolated Vocals - Vocal Analysis and Tutorial
Alice In Chain’s “Man In The Box” was in my opinion, a hugely influential track that still inspires artists to this day and was just such an epic piece.
What other songs would you say also rank up there with that same level of influence and inspiration? Let me know in the comments!
I’m going to be looking at the isolated vocal stem from Layne’s recording of “Man In The Box” so I can explain how it was recorded, as I do an analysis and tutorial of the tune.
I’ll also show you how to get that same distortion safely using open throat technique, as I demonstrate it for you myself.

That is very possible. I once treated a lion in a veterinary clinic. They brought him there before they put him asleep so we obviously came out to have a look. I stood a short distance away from the cage when he became angry and started growling, but it was not like real growling, it was more like when a dog gets annoyed and starts to growl a bit. But even that slight growl that was coming out of the lion i could feel as it vibrated through my body. The intensity of low frequency these animals have is just unimaginable.

I can confirm Layne used a Lo-Fi mic on this. Watched a whole video of the sound mixing guy who actually mixed this song, he said it was a low fidelity mic and you can hear that it is, the sound reminds me of a transistor radio, many artist will add the effect of lo-fi with EQ adjustments, however you can tell the difference.
I am guilty of doing the same using a lo-fi EQ setting I made on my recording software when I want that effect. But I refuse to go with anything different than a condenser mic, dynamic mics cut out a lot of ambient noise but the vocals suffer if singing, it seems to me dynamic mics for voice radio/podcasts and condenser mics for singing.
Layne was a very creative person, he was always trying to do stuff differently from recording to recording. Very cool dude.

This was unmasking at its finest. I’m 61, started singing about 3 years ago. I can’t emphasize what Ken said about learning proper techniques enough.
Please don’t rush into the trap of excessive strain on your vocal chords. This I can testify thru personal experience. This is the song that I caused some damage to my chords.
I learned to stay away from most of my Grunge favorites for 2 years.
The good news is that I learned to sing in a higher register on old RB songs to avoid using those same chords.
If your chords aren’t prepared to sing Feed my eyes without screaming it, chill out until they are.
Thanks Ken for this incredibly insightful breakdown of this epic song.

Yeah, agree. I'm only 19 started to sing a year ago. I have a lower voice. I'm probably a low bari when I started to sing I couldn't sing anything past like G3, my voice was very weak.
I learnt to sing higher like I have demonstration on my channel where I belt E4 though if I sing a phrase on D4 and higher I would die xd. Like I can sustain this sound but it's still rigid, I have too much grip on the chord and can't really have dynamics with it. Though when I recorded that I thought it was free.
Like I want to sing these high rock songs and I could just stretch therange farther but that's not the best solution I guess. Now as I have all this strength I use those vowel modification down low like B3, A3 to relax the throat and get used to easy sound. Plus for now I'm gonna study stuff like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, lower verses from rock ballads and I started to listen R'n'B stuff to get some tone and musicality into my sound.

I'm 56, going to be 57. Started singing last year. I have no illusions about how good I'm not, but I want to learn and be the best I can. A side benefit of singing is it trains and improves my ability to breathe under stress, which is important to me as a self defense instructor.
I've been watching many vocal coaches but so far I get what you're saying more than the others that I've been watching. Thanks for your channel.

I don't know if you've done this already. I'd be really really really interested in you breaking down what made AIC harmonies so unique, brilliant and slightly off kilter. I've heard many bands try, but they had a music sensibility all their own. Even the way Jerry plays guitar isn't technically difficult. But the way he thinks about music and the guitar is unique to him. I love music like that.
