Layne Staley - Alice In Chains - Man In The Box - Isolated Vocals - Vocal Analysis and Tutorial
Alice In Chain’s “Man In The Box” was in my opinion, a hugely influential track that still inspires artists to this day and was just such an epic piece.
What other songs would you say also rank up there with that same level of influence and inspiration? Let me know in the comments!
I’m going to be looking at the isolated vocal stem from Layne’s recording of “Man In The Box” so I can explain how it was recorded, as I do an analysis and tutorial of the tune.
I’ll also show you how to get that same distortion safely using open throat technique, as I demonstrate it for you myself.

Cantrell described his singing as "an angry angel"
Rock on!
That was actually Tom Morello from RATM, said he came out everyday in a beautiful suit and sang like an Angry Angel. Referring to Lallapalooza 1993
Absolutely perfect description.
That's awesome
That was actually Tom Morello
I often wondered if Layne knew how gifted a singer he was. I miss him so so much.
Gone too soon!
I am positive he knew about his talent and abilities.
I read one of his last interviews, maybe it was the last can't remember, I was goin thru similar shit and hearing what he had to say about life with his addiction....it was so honest it still makes me actually feel an ache in my chest when I think of him
I wonder if he would still be able to sing to today with the technique he used. Safe or unsafe?
@@JungYT depends a lot on how he warned up and treated his voice afterwards. In short; no. He couldn't even sing like this by the end of his life; he sadly had no teeth
Layne had same lung capacity as a lion roaring, you can feel the vibration of every word in your bones! He was one of a kind..
Absolutely, G Rose22!
He was a Leo lol soo..
Jerry used to say that "you could FEEL Layne singing no matter where you were in the venue!" Like a nuke!
@@TNAGRFRMARS Amazing_ crazy he's not with us anymore..
@@symphonyinkart cool!
When you sing from a place in your soul that is so dark that it cannot be merely spoken ,it can only be released in song , THAT was Layne
👍💜😀
Unfortunately, that type of singer has short time on this earth ,seen it time and time again.hard to sing like a soul tormented.
He was definitely a legend.
@@jeffhicks2070 absolutely.... next person that comes to mind is Janice Joplin
One of the most unique voices of all time. Miss him dearly
Man his voice on another level
Rock on!
His pitch on that chorus is so good it's sounds like they were tuned
I read an article that in his prime, bandmates could "feel" his diaphragm move like a speaker does.....thats awesome!!
That is very possible. I once treated a lion in a veterinary clinic. They brought him there before they put him asleep so we obviously came out to have a look. I stood a short distance away from the cage when he became angry and started growling, but it was not like real growling, it was more like when a dog gets annoyed and starts to growl a bit. But even that slight growl that was coming out of the lion i could feel as it vibrated through my body. The intensity of low frequency these animals have is just unimaginable.
I know nothing of the technical side of it.
All I know is Layne Staley had a unique gift that originated in his soul and burst forth from his mouth with so much power and passion that more than 20 years absent, he is still captivating the world.
Uou! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Rip Laney...
Never clicked so fast in my life.
Glad you're here, Luis.
Me too😂😂
Likewise
Layne voice is bulletproof
Rock on, kiko!
His vibrato is so honest and natural.....
I was lucky enough to see Layne sing live.... just incredible !! one of the best I've ever heard !! just a terrible loss ... awesome harmonies with Jerry ... you could feel Layne sing even in the back row. Powerful vocals!
How lucky are you?! Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🥧😊
Lucky you
Yes!!! I also saw Layne live in 92. By far the best vocalist I've ever heard live. His voice was powerful, emotional, flawless!! I was hooked on AIC after that show. He was truly impressive!!
You can feel how much of a tortured soul he was in his singing.
@@goatmanindustries7182 agreed ,a tortured soul always sound great ,very unfortunate, they make you feel the pain .
Chilling. His voice just gives those all over body chills. Not because he's passed away, but because he was so gifted and this is my first listen to a vocal only track of his. Wow! I love it. I could listen to him sing the dictionary. He's fantastic.
I just WISH that AIC would get the SAME amount of recognition as Nirvana, Sound-garden and Pearl Jam.... I really and truly believe that AIC gets looked over ALL of the time and it’s just SAD 😢 SOOO SOOO MUCH TALENT!!!
R.I.P.... Layne Staley....
Mike Starr
Kurt Cobain
Andy Wood
Chris Cornell
Thank you, Kerri!
I 💯 AGREE!!!!!
Agreed!
I love how Layne sings the last chorus 😍
👍💜😀
Great analysis! One of the best I've watched about Layne Staley's singing technique. The man was a genious. Above all, he sang his heart out and that is something we don't get to hear everyday
Well said, Sofia! Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🥧😊
My favorite grunge singer that ever existed. Just an amazing talent...
Absolutely!
A fantastic singer for me my second favourite the late great Chris Cornell is number 1 for me
He singed depressious ,rebellious and passionate at the same time.90s had a lot of amazing singers but when Layne sings he make you feel every word he said and got chill like a rusty knife cutting through your heart.
Absolutely!
Love alice n chains. Laynes voice gives me chills
Rock on, Terri!
Layne Staley was an absolutely phenomenal vocalist. Easily one of the best & one of my favorites.
Rock on!
They honestly had no idea the impact their music would have, but wow, did it happen
Absolutely, ZosoArt!
I read a comment about Layne and how we all miss him. We dont understand how we can miss someone we didn’t actually know; so freaking much. I miss Layne so freaking much. The best wver. No one can sing like him.
Gone too soon, Kara!
One of the things I find fascinating about Layne is, in interviews, he always seemed so soft spoken, granted we understand his drug abuse, but always so subdued even when joking around. Then you hear Layne sing, and it’s so strong, he’s extraordinary. I don’t know if he ever knew how great he is. 😢
If I could have half of 1 percent of this mans positive vibes, I'd be a much happier individual.
Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾🎈🧨
@@kentamplin Thanks buddy, you too. I'm currently waiting for the KISS 2020 GOODBYE pay-per-view. Unfortunately gonna have to deal with Paul Stanley's destroyed vocal chords! Love them anyway! Happy new year!
I'm a simple person. I see Ken Tamplin and Alice In Chains together and press like.
Thank you, Raquel!
Hahahahaha So am I and I did the same thing haha
I saw Layne live as well and he was a force to behold. I count myself lucky to have had the chance.
Rock on!
Lane is definitely one of my favorite singers from this era
Rock on!
The most distinctive voice I've ever heard...Layne is where I got most of my singing influence from...The gravelly and grindy sound for the most part.
Rock on, Seth! 👍
That is an important point. It's amazing how much you sing and maintain your vocal integrity. Very impressive how much you know and your skill level.
Thank you so much!
Trying to follow along with the singing makes me appreciate Layne's breath support skills even more.
Rock on!
Dude said many singers forever lock themselves into using distortion in upper registry or belting because they used distortion too much or went straight into it without rolling into it gradually.
That made SO MUCH sense after seeing so many singers and styles while playing with other musicians. Crazy - great info thanks for the knowledge!
David Pritt 👍
Layne's mp11 and 12v vocals are spot on. He hits hyper notes followed through the f1 at the bottom. Gotta love it. Props!!!
Thanks for watching, Keith!
That guy had the rare ability to give me goosebumps all over hearin his vocals .do you like the track rooster or them bones ? You do a great job showin us .I'm lovin it . Layne genuine rock god .imo.
I really enjoyed this. Hearing Layne's voice like this gave me chills. AIC has been my favorite band since the beginning and I'm so glad others appreciate his voice, and their music, as much as I do. I don't think they had any idea how iconic their music would become.
👍💜😀
Layne and AIC ROCK STILL! It never gets old. Layne will always be remembered for who he was & the distinct voice he had! Talent ⭐️💥Thanks Mr. Vocal Coach☮️Karla Snow (not Scott)
love AIC and layne's voice but never realized just how good he was until hearing this isolated.
Thanks for watching, Rock M!
His anger, sadness, and solid power made the band - still love these guys, but he was something else 🤩
Sure was!
My favorite singer of all time!! Such a distinguished voice!
Indeed!
Layne is my favorite singer of all time and also the only singer who I feel sings way better live than on the album's. Listen to the Mad Season album and then watch the live versions.
Thanks for the visit! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾🎈🧨
Oh, there are tons. Russell Allen from Symphony X is my fav example, and basically any 80's - 90's Bruce Dickinson.
I can confirm Layne used a Lo-Fi mic on this. Watched a whole video of the sound mixing guy who actually mixed this song, he said it was a low fidelity mic and you can hear that it is, the sound reminds me of a transistor radio, many artist will add the effect of lo-fi with EQ adjustments, however you can tell the difference.
I am guilty of doing the same using a lo-fi EQ setting I made on my recording software when I want that effect. But I refuse to go with anything different than a condenser mic, dynamic mics cut out a lot of ambient noise but the vocals suffer if singing, it seems to me dynamic mics for voice radio/podcasts and condenser mics for singing.
Layne was a very creative person, he was always trying to do stuff differently from recording to recording. Very cool dude.
Thanks for the info!
@@kentamplin No problem man. You did a fantastic job of analyzing Layne's vocals on this song. I really enjoy your videos, they are so helpful.
Would have been awesome to here the harmonies with Jerry, and the way the 2 of them bounced off each other.
Great work Ken.
Thanks, Travis!
Very unique voice, great singer. R. I. P. Layne.
Thanks Ken!
Layne will always be my favorite singer. Great video ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it, Kim!
Absolutely brilliant! I’ve been studying Alice In Chains and the death of Layne in detail for a months now. You’re understanding and ability to recreate his sound and intensity gives me hope the Alice In Chains can find a lead singer to continue their epic sounds post Layne. Not the same but at least on par or perhaps with renewed vigor. Yes I miss Layne too but he chose to kill himself with heroin. So very sad. I have a friend who recently died of self neglect way before his time. I’m personally saddened! Thanks Ken. Your work helps many that love the music to better appreciate it.
Can’t wait for an iso on Eddie Vedder on “Black” or “Release “ ‼️
😀👍
Black, Pearl Jam unplugged is so good
I like how you mention how he pronounces the vowels. Using an ah sound instead of an ee, like on feed my eyes. If you go back and watch some really early live videos of him singing this from 89 he didn’t do that. He changed that around late 89, I’m sure he had some kind of training around that time. He’s my favorite Ken!! 🤘🏽 Keep up the great work
Glad you enjoyed it, BMC 1982!
I love all your details Ken (microphone guessing, headphones bleed, delay and reverb settings) signs of a true pro!
Glad you enjoy the videos, Tomas!
I don’t think they knew then how iconic their songs would be years later Ken. They were flat broke when they recorded their first album that this song was on. It’s a shame Layne couldn’t get clean, very sad story and a huge talent lost just like so many others he died too young
A huge loss indeed, BMC 1982!
The flat tone and the vocal melody is what made them so unique.
Rock on! Thanks for listening! 😀
Man.... What a great singer... still blows me away!! Thanks Ken.
My pleasure!
I miss Layne. I have a hard time listening to AIC after his death. I love him. :(
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
Excellent episode Ken. Was always fascinated with Staley’s voice, and this isolated vocals shows even more of his technical nuances and the powerhouse that he was.
Glad you enjoyed it, D J.
Man. I miss the 90s the gold standard of music to me. Pure magic with so much raw emotion and soul. Unlike todays garbage cough popstars.
Never Enough Cowbell 👍
@@kentamplin don't go messing with a ,a S.O.B.NOW your messing with a S.O.B.plenty of bell 😁😁
That "aah..aah" he sounds honest and that "he meant business",.. in what he was conveying....his feel....
You are the best man. The one and truly greatest vocal trainer here on RUclips. You are not only tells about singing but you know how to do it and you are also a singer. All the best from Poland Ken. You opened my eyes to many things in singing ✌️
Thanks for the visit! Appreciate it! Rock on!
Layne knew he was a Vocal God and Genius but he never took himself to serious about it either. Such a unique person... F Drugs... he had so much more to give
Rock on!
Wow Layne!!
I came for Layne’s incredible voice but stayed for this guy 😊😉
2 things i love ken tamplin and layne Staley
💜💜💜
Awesome take on Laynes voice live.. the intensity he brought live was just beyond intense, especially in his better days.. he was just phenomenal. His vibrato is so good! Great video! I enjoyed this 🤘🏻
Love this
Nice video about Layne! I have been trying to understand singers that I listen. This video and the other is giving me one more step into Layne's voice. Thanks Ken! Keep this nice work.
Glad it was helpful!
This dude is the man.
Thanks for the visit. Rock on!
My 2nd favourite singer of all time.
Freddie #1
I love Layne's distinctive sound. You did a great job breaking this down Ken. God bless, Jeremiah
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was unmasking at its finest. I’m 61, started singing about 3 years ago. I can’t emphasize what Ken said about learning proper techniques enough.
Please don’t rush into the trap of excessive strain on your vocal chords. This I can testify thru personal experience. This is the song that I caused some damage to my chords.
I learned to stay away from most of my Grunge favorites for 2 years.
The good news is that I learned to sing in a higher register on old RB songs to avoid using those same chords.
If your chords aren’t prepared to sing Feed my eyes without screaming it, chill out until they are.
Thanks Ken for this incredibly insightful breakdown of this epic song.
Thanks for sharing that, Papparratzi!
Yeah, agree. I'm only 19 started to sing a year ago. I have a lower voice. I'm probably a low bari when I started to sing I couldn't sing anything past like G3, my voice was very weak.
I learnt to sing higher like I have demonstration on my channel where I belt E4 though if I sing a phrase on D4 and higher I would die xd. Like I can sustain this sound but it's still rigid, I have too much grip on the chord and can't really have dynamics with it. Though when I recorded that I thought it was free.
Like I want to sing these high rock songs and I could just stretch therange farther but that's not the best solution I guess. Now as I have all this strength I use those vowel modification down low like B3, A3 to relax the throat and get used to easy sound. Plus for now I'm gonna study stuff like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, lower verses from rock ballads and I started to listen R'n'B stuff to get some tone and musicality into my sound.
Thank you for taking the time to do your videos! So interesting how you explain the vocals and amazing how you can give an even more in depth understanding of how talented these singers really were/are! God bless!
My pleasure!
@@kentamplin so great that you reply and so quickly! Please do more Jonathan D, Corey Taylor (maybe birth of the cruel..??) Or Layne. Thanks!!
@@ashleymcmeakin8590 Thanks for the suggestion!
I’m not singer, hell not even a musician but a music lover and I love your videos.
Gone too soon. He was so talented.
This would've helped in 90's when I was screaming my head off singing along with my car stereo. Dig the shirt!
Thanks, Dave!
I totally agree. I started learning to sing bc I related to something in Layne's voice.
You convinced me to buy the course. You are the only person ive heard hit those notes so flawlessly.
Fantastic breakdown and highly informative demonstrations. Keep rocking! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Thanks a ton!
So awesome that you can hear him listening to the song on his headphones!!! It brings you into the moment... Great stuff Ken!
Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾
@@kentamplin Back at ya--Happy New Year!
I'm 56, going to be 57. Started singing last year. I have no illusions about how good I'm not, but I want to learn and be the best I can. A side benefit of singing is it trains and improves my ability to breathe under stress, which is important to me as a self defense instructor.
I've been watching many vocal coaches but so far I get what you're saying more than the others that I've been watching. Thanks for your channel.

You're an amazing teacher
I like these Analysis videos Ken, Great Idea, Great Job!
Glad to hear that Vince!
I don't know if you've done this already. I'd be really really really interested in you breaking down what made AIC harmonies so unique, brilliant and slightly off kilter. I've heard many bands try, but they had a music sensibility all their own. Even the way Jerry plays guitar isn't technically difficult. But the way he thinks about music and the guitar is unique to him. I love music like that.
Great suggestion!
My favorite singer, thanks ken
My pleasure, Russeful!
Was JUST listening to the isolated vocals of this song too. Great timing , Ken!
Very cool, kojimapromeatspin!
Solid presentation Ken
Sure Brings back memories of the music bank
Good stuff, Rob!
I love watching Ken dissect these singers! Epic!
Thanks, Andrew!
Wow.
Thanks for posting this.
Indeed!
Gives you chills
Does indeed!
I can't speak for everyone involved, but I seriously doubt Layne thought the song he wrote while super stoned about how a cow in a meat processing plant feels would change music forever.
Rock on!
Sometimes I feel I can sing, my wife says I have a nice voice.... But I digress. I just wanted to note that you literally responded to every single comment. I wasn't looking for that , but noticed it by accident.
That's pretty cool man. Great video.
I sure try!
Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾🎈🧨
Every take super explained. I am totally impressed! GREAT JOB again!!!!!
