it´s fascinating how much support and admiration Layne still receives in comments despite so many years since he left. Most singers rarely get half of the positive feedback even during their active careers. Many of these comments are also very heartfelt. There is something very unique about how Layne approached singing and we fell in love with it despite never actually knowing him.
It helps he seemed like a nice dude that just got caught up in a cycle. Today he probably would have gotten better help but back then it was more stigmatized. Today every tom dick and Harry are addicts or in recovery. Back then I think he felt like he was less of a human or that he was a failure or a bad role model so he just stayed to himself and lived his life the way he felt he wanted. Maybe in this day and age he's wouldn't have been such a recluse and maybe been more open to getting help. But he was sick for a long time and only Layne knows to what extent.
Everyone only has food things to say about him. Of course his amazing voice, earlier stage presence are lauded but people that were close to him only have the nicest things to say about him.

worst? some of those notes and articulations he's hitting are better than anything ive heard him ever do live. he knew he was sick. there are things in music called 'scales' and when you sing in these things in pitch, as long as you're in key, it all works. he's not out of key for a majority of his singing here. it comes off as 'passionate' not 'at his worst'. still my favorite version of the song cause he sounds like he knows he isnt doing well
On no, there were definitely a couple of times where he sounded genuinely bad, I don’t think was one of them though. There’s a Rio ‘93 video floating around somewhere, for example, where he was really flat and he kept losing his breath and missing whole lines, and a few times he had to kind of sit down right there in front of the mic. I don’t know if he was just worn out for some reason or if he was sick/high/jonesing or just hot or what, but anyone who’s seen him that way would definitely never say this was bad.
I remember hearing people say that he could sing so loud during practice that you didn't need a mic for him or that you could feel the vibrations from his voice.

All of the bandmates went to Laynes house or called 100's of times. Layne did rehab around 12 times I believe It just wasn't to be. You have to want it for yourself. Couldn't imagine the pain and suffering of Laynes family and friends through the dark years. He was rough in 96 at the unplugged shows I am sure he was miserable for the last 6 years. RIP to one of the greatest voices in Rock history.

Yeah he was playing it safe in a few spots. But he did reach that high note several times. It sounded great anyway, just a bit more varied which was cool.

I was there and had no clue this would be his last show, ever. I also heard he OD'd a couple of hrs after the show and was taken to a KC emergency room where he eventually recovered and made it home. Layne performed all his shows like this, leaning into the mic stand but what struck me and others was when their set was done, he literally walked off stage like an old man. He was over 6ft, but he moved like a dude in his 80's, obviously he was doped up during the show and amazingly his natural voice killed it, even his screams were on key despite being wasted. Great show, incredibly tight and kick ass sound... and very sad too.
It's haunting of the fact that it's the last time he would ever sang the song so I imagine it as him screaming his one final hurrah before him leaving to go and die as a depressed drug addict...it was final way of saying goodbye to us as Alice in Chains fans Rest in Peace original Alice in Chains 1987-2002

he probably didn't have much help with vocal lessons I'm not sure he may have but i don't think so there carrier was short with layne unfortunately :( heroin is hell of a drug i should know was a heavy addict for 6+ years been on methadone for just over a year almost off that shit too, anyways my point is i don't think he really wanted to die :( it six when you can't get the help you need / want form your buddies

I hurt also when I see this. To see him just standing there without moving makes me sad. He was always energetic on stage. When I see his live version of "it Aint Like That" just makes me uugh I lost my words. Layne you will always be remembered.
I was at this show...AIC just KILLED it that night, and they were only the warm-up act (they opened for KISS). I would have cried if I knew this was Staley's last stand. One of the best damn concerts I ever went to, period. Everything was just right, the stars were aligned just so, and what a great period in time to see a band!
I saw them in St. Louis opening for KISS around the same time and I couldn't believe how great they were. He was spot on that night. Had no idea he was in so much trouble. RIP.

If you listen to this just after listening to him sing it live in the early 90's it's 10 times more heartbreaking... one of the best vocalists to ever perform being reduced to this is so sad. Better than most could do even at this stage of his fight with depression, but it still hurts to see him like this.

Josh VanHuss no that's not true.. he was fine when he arrived in NYC..he was with his friend Randy Biro.. who was also an addict... Randy only had enough for himself.. so the "management" got some H for Layne and he only did enough so he wouldnt get sick and he didnt do alot so he wouldnt nod during the filming..they were there for hours and hours. and the final cut was edited... and Layne had the final say on what would be shown on the video.. hope that clear some things up..

This whole performance just kills me. It's amazing but is full of feels, for lack of better expression. From that thumbs up to just the fact that Layne still could give an amazing performance in his final shows.
You can see how Layne was trying to put as much talent and emotion to that song (especially that it was the last song of that show). It's especially shown in the choruses.

I only discovered AIC about 2 years ago, as I was only about 3 when Layne passed away and my family never really listened to this genre. By the time of his passing he had been out of the music scene for a long time too. Listening to him, I absolutely fell in love with his voice, his vibe, and his presence. We don’t have talent or music like that anymore. I know I was born in the wrong generation. Wish I could’ve been born earlier to see him in Seattle at the Moore in his prime. I’m stuck in a generation of SoundCloud rappers.
I think deep down due to all of his final interviews and almost prophetic statements about knowing he didn't have much longer he knew this was gonna be his last performance and that's why he sounds so haunted yet amazingly beautiful and soulful. People always think Layne destroyed his voice by singing very abrasively but tbh I really think it was how he took care of himself off stage. One of my old music teachers was a huge fan and said he had surprisingly good voice control but also said how drugs will fuck up your voice. Even if you’re not a singer, I mean look at what smoking cigarettes does to your voice.
Much of his Dirt-era technique sounds very, very healthy. It wasn’t technique that destroyed him - a lot of his abrasiveness from Facelift up until Tripod is primarily a result of nasality and healthy distortion. It was that if your muscles atrophy and you body wastes away, so will all the mechanisms necessary for singing, as well as the energy. The performance here may not be healthy-sounding or quite like Layne in his prime, but it’s still an incredible effort from someone who was so, so nearly dead as he was here.
No one thinks that. It was 100% drugs. Can you imagine singing powerfully in a hot ass arena with a weak body and gurgly stomach, all kinds of gastrointestinal issues happening, possible liver problems, dry mouth, fatigue, muscle atrophy, malnutrition, nausea, headaches, brain fog and severe depression at your condition? We are all lucky Layne was still standing here at all. He OD right after the show. He was probably feeling like crap/death during this show but he still gave it everything. It's a travesty but he probably could've got his earlier voice back if he got the general state of health back in his overall body. He was 100% the best singer I've heard in my entire life. I actually love the way he sounds here, it's one of my favorite vocal performances of Man in the Box. I like the way he changes up the chorus here--which was intentional, as he does the same thing in the other shows of the final tour. He's singing more in his throat here (a la Kurt Cobain) than he did when he was healthier, which yes strictly speaking isn't as technically proficient or sustainable, but it sounds more raw and aesthetically pleasing (at least for my taste). He's still got a lot of power. Much more interesting take on the chorus in this rendition, too.
Nothing to do with throat singing, he isnt straining like Cobain. Dont ever compare Layne to Cobain. Layne is using distortion techniques, Cobain did not have that amount of technique.

It’s really amazing and also a bit sad to watch this performance right after the recording of Man in the Box from the Moore in 1990, where Layne’s voice still had a ton of power behind that characteristic rasp of his, but with that said, even this late in he still sounds much better than many acts could ever want to.

This is my favorite version of man in the box, they all had this really insane amount of intensity during this and knowing this was the last song with Layne they played, it gave me some of the biggest chills I’ve ever gotten, just raw and a lot of emotion fucking love it
I keep going back to hear Layne hit that high note followed by Jerry giving him the thumbs up. It's so breathtakingly bittersweet. Enough to bring tears to your eyes. Rest in Peace Layne. Always. Eventually we will all be reunited with Him.

All of the bandmates went to Laynes house or called 100's of times. Layne did rehab around 12 times I believe It just wasn't to be. You have to want it for yourself. Couldn't imagine the pain and suffering of Laynes family and friends through the dark years. He was rough in 96 at the unplugged shows I am sure he was miserable for the last 6 years. RIP to one of the greatest voices in Rock history.

He was fortunately blessed with perfect pitch (so is Jerry btw) which makes it easy to sing, even when fucked up. At the same time it may have been better for him if he had to work harder at it and had to be somewhat straight to perform.

I was there and had no clue this would be his last show, ever. I also heard he OD'd a couple of hrs after the show and was taken to a KC emergency room where he eventually recovered and made it home. Layne performed all his shows like this, leaning into the mic stand but what struck me and others was when their set was done, he literally walked off stage like an old man. He was over 6ft, but he moved like a dude in his 80's, obviously he was doped up during the show and amazingly his natural voice killed it, even his screams were on key despite being wasted. Great show, incredibly tight and kick ass sound... and very sad too.

I was at this show...AIC just KILLED it that night, and they were only the warm-up act (they opened for KISS).
I would have cried if I knew this was Staley's last stand. One of the best damn concerts I ever went to, period. Everything was just right, the stars were aligned just so, and what a great period in time to see a band!

If you listen to this just after listening to him sing it live in the early 90's it's 10 times more heartbreaking... one of the best vocalists to ever perform being reduced to this is so sad. Josh VanHuss no that's not true.. he was fine when he arrived in NYC..he was with his friend Randy Biro.. who was also an addict... Randy only had enough for himself.. so the "management" got some H for Layne and he only did enough so he wouldnt get sick and he didnt do alot so he wouldnt nod during the filming..they were there for hours and hours. and the final cut was edited... and Layne had the final say on what would be shown on the video.. hope that clear some things up..

His problem wasn't his voice, but because he couldn't pronounce words properly because he was missing a lot of teeth.
This whole performance just kills me. It's amazing but is full of feels, for lack of better expression. From that thumbs up to just the fact that Layne still could give an amazing performance in his final shows.
You can see how Layne was trying to put as much talent and emotion to that song (especially that it was the last song of that show). It's especially shown in the choruses.

Even in his condition here, he could still break down fucking walls with his voice. That chorus change at 1:08 is phenomenal. I only discovered AIC about 2 years ago, as I was only about 3 when Layne passed away and my family never really listened to this genre. By the time of his passing he had been out of the music scene for a long time too. Listening to him, I absolutely fell in love with his voice, his vibe, and his presence. We don’t have talent or music like that anymore. I know I was born in the wrong generation. Wish I could’ve been born earlier to see him in Seattle at the Moore in his prime. I’m stuck in a generation of SoundCloud rappers.

People always think Layne destroyed his voice by singing very abrasively but tbh I really think it was how he took care of himself off stage. One of my old music teachers was a huge fan and said he had surprisingly good voice control but also said how drugs will fuck up your voice. Even if you’re not a singer, I mean look at what smoking cigarettes does to your voice.
Much of his Dirt-era technique sounds very, very healthy. It wasn’t technique that destroyed him - a lot of his abrasiveness from Facelift up until Tripod is primarily a result of nasality and healthy distortion. It was that if your muscles atrophy and you body wastes away, so will all the mechanisms necessary for singing, as well as the energy. The performance here may not be healthy-sounding or quite like Layne in his prime, but it’s still an incredible effort from someone who was so, so nearly dead as he was here.

Can you imagine singing powerfully in a hot ass arena with a weak body and gurgly stomach, all kinds of gastrointestinal issues happening, possible liver problems, dry mouth, fatigue, muscle atrophy, malnutrition, nausea, headaches, brain fog and severe depression at your condition? We are all lucky Layne was still standing here at all. He OD right after the show. He was probably feeling like crap/death during this show but he still gave it everything. It's a travesty but he probably could've got his earlier voice back if he got the general state of health back in his overall body. He was 100% the best singer I've heard in my entire life. RIP Layne Staley. Thanks for sharing your gifts. 😢❤

I actually love the way he sounds here, it's one of my favorite vocal performances of Man in the Box. I like the way he changes up the chorus here--which was intentional, as he does the same thing in the other shows of the final tour. He's singing more in his throat here (a la Kurt Cobain) than he did when he was healthier, which yes strictly speaking isn't as technically proficient or sustainable, but it sounds more raw and aesthetically pleasing (at least for my taste). He's still got a lot of power. Much more interesting take on the chorus in this rendition, too.
Nothing to do with throat singing, he isnt straining like Cobain. Dont ever compare Layne to Cobain. Layne is using distortion techniques, Cobain did not have that amount of technique.

It’s really amazing and also a bit sad to watch this performance right after the recording of Man in the Box from the Moore in 1990, where Layne’s voice still had a ton of power behind that characteristic rasp of his, but with that said, even this late in he still sounds much better than many acts could ever want to.
No matter how far into the void he slid, his voice stayed strong and powerful. So sad we lost this beautiful Soul but it's a privilege to have heard his Godlike sound
