Whenever people talk about the greatest concerts of all time. It blows my mind that no one seems to mention “Def Leppard: In the Round, In Your Face” live from Denver 1988. Absolutely phenomenal
I had the chance to hear Joe warming up during DL's European tour in 2019. And I was amazed at what a strong voice he has, the man is a powerhouse. Even more amazing considering he keeps singing in that difficult style of his for over 40 years now, and they usually have extensive tours every year. All in one, I love his voice, it's one of the few voices unmistakable from the very first few words of any of their songs
@@mikefields2243 He "Fizzled out?!! WTH..If ya Don't know by now, as I saw Leppard 5x in my life, Al;ways feeling bad for Joe due to Not sounding very good Live, it was due to his 100 Day cough BS that almost totally Ruined his vloice. just so ya know eh...!
Its amazing Joe can sing these songs night after night. He doesn't have the greatest voice, and he's the first to admit that, but it's unique, and the band as a whole sound fantastic live. They really put a huge amount of work into the live show.
Even Def Leppard said they overcooked production on some of their albums. I think it was kinda expected during this pop rock era. This is the best channel on RUclips for detailed vocal information. Thank you Ken, this is really a great series!
I agree, Joe Elliot said that "you employ a producer to make you sound better than you are," Having said that, there was a magical sound that came out of the combination of Mutt Lange and Def Leppard.....one of my favorite bands!!!
This is the best series about vocal production on youtube . I've learned so much about layering effects and how you can turn an average voice into this huge professional sound . Some of these legendary voices isolated sound small and kind of funny , but once you add the music and effects , suddenly they sound HUGE and powerful .
I love watching In The Round because he advanced so far vocally between pyromania and hysteria! And he’s live! Pretty sure he got a vocal coach because his voice started to die from touring and singing like this
One of the posts Def Leppard did during the Stadium Tour had Vivian describing the vocal coaching they've been doing over the years. It was very interesting, and I am so proud of the way they're approaching everything with 100% great effort and professionalism. Rock On My Boys! 💗
"a singer is only a singer cause he has the Guts to be one" THAT is Heavy,,,, it's tricks and secrets like this that make so much presure for us Lowly lil' cover singers...
When you removed all the effects at the end he sounded great. I just saw them in concert last night and I am amazed at his talent and stage presence. He has such a fascinating voice
The songs are works of art. All sorts of things occur in the studio. This analysis is as much about Mutt as it is about Joe. He pulled this off live back in the 80s and 90s.
There is no “mystery “. Take ALL the technicality out of it & Joe’s voice sounds like no one! Joe never even went to audition for DL as a singer. The band wanted him to be the frontman. Mutt pushed Joe on his voice because Joe wasn’t a singer. It’s Joe’s “tone”...not his technique...so you can dissect it all you want. HIS VOICE is gold.💛
joe he learn by your self to sing, he before def leppard was a guitar, jonh mutt lange a great produced too, but joe is a complete singer, he sing ballad so weel (two step behind, i miss a hearbeat, for example) with a almost angelical voice, and then can sing songs like pour som sugar and photograph,!! for me joe is one of the best rock singer all time!!
Amazing. Joe Elliott's voice is not all the epic with the effects stripped out. Great stage presence, yes. Does give hope that a mere mortal can have a rock star voice, with the right effects.
Hello, this got recommended to me, I don’t have anything to add but I have noticed that there are about 476 comments and you have replied to all of them and I just wanted to say, that’s amazing most RUclipsrs don’t take the time to do that, especially being a close to 1 million subs as you are Edit: I subscribed, can’t wait for 1 million subs!
I think the autotune - pitchy effect you're hearing is some sort of composite of a vocoder or talkbox mixed in conjunction with the dry vocal. So you're getting the pure pitch along with the gritty vocal.
Ken, one of the many things I like about you is how you reassure your students and other interested parties that they shouldn't feel intimidated by some of these singers. I like how you point out that they too can sing like some of these famous folk. That is a great approach!
I forgot to mention last night that I really appreciate your content. It’s pretty awesome to see some of the “behind the scenes” workings of these bands.
So the "chirping" thing in the ages vocal you mentioned - I'm not sure since I don't think they've stated it publicly, but I have a theory it's pitch shifted with a sampler. So Def Leppard in the Pyromania days used a sampler called the "Fairlight CMI". The drums on Pyromania are samples from the Fairlight CMI. Def Leppard and Mutt Lange used it as a means to alter the arrangments long after the recording process, and I think it might have been done for practical reasons to help out Rick Allen too. However the drums aren't live. They are programmed in. As a result, you can put their songs in your DAW and if you can find the right Tempo, the whole song will hit that tempo perfectly. As an example, Photograph is at the tempo 123.43. Put it in your DAW at the tempo of 123.43 and the click will be perfectly in time with the whole song. Now, you were able to record and store samples into the CMI, and you were also able to alter the pitch of samples in real time. Using this feature, they were able to pitch shift vocals. What I think is happening with the "ages" vocals is Joe is actually sung "Ages" as one single G note, but then Mutt pitch shifted it to the A using the Fairlight sampler. This is why it has that "autotune" feel, because that pitch shift is too fast and too clean to be realistic. It's more like an effect. IIRC, I'm pretty sure I read the Fairlight had the ability to show you if a sample was perfectly on pitch, and you could edit that after the fact. I think using Fairlight, they were able to alter Def Leppards vocals to sound pitch perfect, but unlike Autotune, which is done automatically, everything done in the Fairlight had to be done by hand. I'm pretty sure sometimes, you can hear the pitch shifted vocals in some of the harmonies, sometimes the vocal tones sound a little high or low to be "real". I'm 99% sure they used the Fairlight to mess around with the vocals and kept it under wraps because the rock purists would complain about it. In other words, what is happening is like autotune, but it's like the precursor to it. At least, that's what I believe they're doing.
Really loving this isolated vocal analysis format. Vocal recording demistified. The vocals sounded achievable by an ordinary student studying vocals. Having a great producer is a plus factor.
I have studied singing and audio engineering for quite a long time and Ken is the real deal. He knows exactly what he's talking about and if you are into singing or mixing vocals you should listen exactly to what he says.
Mutt Lange was always notorious for punching in EVERYTHING. Take Hysteria for example. The clean guitar intro/verses, each arpeggiated chord was done separately. Phil would play the D G and Emin sections all as separate takes. That and many other tunes they recorded with him. Wouldn't surprise me if they still record that way on their own today.
I still sing in standard... going to half-step is inevitable with age... But yeah, Joe Elliot is up there with Steve Perry's Journey...of course, Steve Perry is still the GOAT.
WOW! Another great analysis which I secretly wanted! I tried to sing in same way as Joe did but I was affraid of injury. When I sang high notes I usually overcompressed my voice and after a while it hurted a lot. I also had problem that I pushed my chest voice too high so I didn’t have mixed voice. All these problems solved your course and my voice is still growing. Thanks for all, Ken!
Pyromania is probably my favorite Def Leppard album. Great insight into studio magic. Why it's called recording artists. Why don't you cover Lady Strange for a video ? Might introduce some folks to pre pyromania greatness.
Oh my gosh. I want to take these vocals and use them for an arcade game. This sounds like the most amazing video game announcer voice. "Come on!", "Alright!" haha

I must admit these isolated vocals vids are changing the way I'm listening to great singers - Was listening to Gary Puckett's 'Woman Woman' earlier today and could almost hear Ken's comments in the background.!
In regards to the vaguely "autotune" effect (14:30), producers in the 80s would "tune" vocals with the Eventide H910 (1974) or the Eventide H949 (1977). It is verified from multiple sources that Mutt owned an Eventide H910 by 1979 or 1980. Most of the "cheating" techniques of today (drum sampling, 'tuning vocals, etc...) where possible in the 80s, but were not ubiquitous, easily available, readily understood, or powerful enough to save a duff production. Cheers.
Wow. So informative. This is my husband's favorite band. Here's an example of "you have to believe in yourself , sell yourself and be in the right place at the right time". Don't get me wrong - I like Def Leppard too . The drummer is incredible. Together they've made great records & you've got to give props for a band that stays/tours together after so many years!
JUST ANOTHER REASON TO PUT KEN TAMPLIN IN MY WILL!! How did you know I have the Def Leppard Christmas album on non stop repeat?! Well. If they had one. Divine inspiration?! All I know is whatever you tell me, I consider DIVINE! Did I mention...YOU ROCK!!!
I see a lot of people recommending the howard stern performance, but I'd suggest checking out their Love Bites-London to vegas, or Billy's got a gun from the same concert. He's getting his voice back, and sounds WAY better than some years ago. I remember you seeing a really bad performance of him from a couple years ago, you should check out his improvements
I'm so impressed I really love this series and I just want to thank you Ken cause you are the only vocal coach on youtube that does this whole isolated vocal thing and you explain it so well and understandable also your whole vibe is just so friendly and funny I always have to smile throughout your videos and I learned so much while watching your videos I just can't belive that you're doing so much for free for those who just can't afford it you are turly a good soul Thank you so much and Bless you and your family! ps. I think who also could be Interesting in this series are high voices like Don Dokken, Miljenko Matijevic, Sebastian Bach :)
Very cool video! I love Def Leppard! Great guys who work their asses off. I often find that my favorite artists are not always my favorite vocalists from a pure vocal talent aspect!
14:55 you were explaining the auto tune/punch thing and sang the whole line head voice then chest without interruption and a giant light bulb went off in my head because I am like OH THAT is why I sound that way when trying to hit a louder higher note....checking out your course, in 2 days you have become my fav channel...just well done man
I guess that the "autotune" effect around 15:22 was not because Joe could not connect his head voice to chest; it's more like an artifact of the doubling (frequency/phase difference).
I loved this track and def Leppard is such a positive memory for me growing up .... I mean no harm but Joe elliot never would make my top 10 list as a rock singer. If you pay attention to his vocals rather than the massive production he often seems to struggle. I liked a fair few of their tracks and arrangements but while Joe was always listenable I never really ranked him. Im sure he couldnt care less!! He is actually a very good radio presenter on planet rock in UK. Great job ken as always and I love the wacky shirts...
😲😲😲 Probably my all time favourite hard rock LP. Still remember buying the vinyl record in 1983. The production is simply incredible. There isn't a single mediocre song. Pete Willis your contribution to posterior albums were greatly missed. 🤍🖤🤎💙💚💛🧡🤪😝🤪😝🤪 🤘🤘🤘
Hey Ken! DL is what i consider to be a great party band. They still put on an incredible show after all these years. Does Joe still hit the highs? No. Not even close. But any band that can live through their drummer losing an arm is phenomenal in my book! DL has so many hits i can't even count them all. Pour Some Sugar On Me is still a staple at every strip bar to this day! Like i said, great party band! Once again Ken amazing job on these isolated vocals videos. Definitely enjoying them! Keep 'em coming! Thank you.✌
One of the most helpful videos you’ve ever done. Thank you so much Ken. I really really really learned a lot in this one. In fact I am quite sure that I am going to go be playing in my studio and using this as a reference😊 Your advice is always been appreciated - rock on
Of course, he may have sung this differently before the producer said, "shorten that", "punctuate this", etc., so that it would sit over the guitars, etc. That takes a lot of guess work for the singer who thinks, "this seems sort of destructive to my singing". Plus, there are some killed frequencies that were I integral to the natural default of the original singing. It's like movie production - we're not meant to see what's partly destroyed to gel with other things.
This is a really interesting analysis of Joe Elliots vocals. It does make you wonder if they’d have had the same success with Pyromania if Mutt Lang wasn’t involved..
Reminds me of my 11 yr old singing ac/dc and he try’s to sing like him it was funny he got that high I just looked at him like 👍 that’s great Drakey I love getting him to like older rock groups like ac/dc ,queen , Manson, Bowie, ect
Freddie Mercury was once quoted to say " it doesn't matter if you hit all the notes darling, they're not here to hear you sing, they're here to see you!". He was probably right. I think we've very much moved away from that era now. The clientele (us) I think expect much more from live performances nowadays. I'm a huge Queen fan and , the more I learn and scrutinise, the more I begin to unpick how difficult some of the songs were to reproduce live. I mean this in the context of what you're saying Ken, in that when you're in a studio, great things can be achieved. I did a cover of 'Lately'in a studio once. Two takes, had to do the 2nd verse separate coz I ran out of breath...lolol. Based on that and this, I'm a much better singer(technically) than Joe E. I dont and never will have his charisma, stage presence and balls though....and that's 90% of what's required it seems 😊
The things Joe Elliot does in the beginning of Rock of Ages, Ozzy Osbourne did in a lot of songs. Crazy Train, the ending of Breaking All the Rules and many songs. Pretty interesting. It would be cool if you did something like this on Ozzy and the way he ad libbed on songs.
Wow it’s pretty amazing how much help some of these singers have I grew up on def lepard and you sure couldn’t tell back then really make you appreciate how good the singers that don’t need much help great video
Hi Ken, another great video, so spot on, you are talented at your work, I agree, because I like to listen to their music, but saw them live, sounded so much different, in a bad noisy way, was disappointed..... Keep up the great reviews you do, from down under, cheers mate.....
Joe is not a great technical singer but Def Leopard is a great band. But he had(and has) massive stage presence and charisma. Love the video and learned here.🤘
Any chance you could do a video on the "secrets" vocalist use when singing live through vocal mics? Things like how to use mic distancing to vary the vocal delivery etc .. ?
I saw them on the Hysteria tour and Joe was awesome. Strong voice and plenty of stamina. I would love to hear a single take of this song and see if it really needed to be done line by line.
Wow, i had the same thought , singer is not who has best voice, but who is crazy and gutsy enough to come and sing in front of people. Also psychologically strong to control crowd, be interesting, and take any shi* from people
I heard Mutt made Joe sing something so many times, he was in tears because he got so frustrated. But all that hard work paid off nicely for the boys... ☺️
@@luvyesmusici4886 David is a natural talent. Joe is a genuine rock star enthusiast they all still love what they do and would be playing now if it wasn't for this mess we are in...

Those shirts add .02% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)to the top end. I think the sound would be automatically cleaned up with a simple shirt change. The stepped (digital)sound waves are definitely sine wave (analog) bending due to the reverb coming off that shirt. What kind of DAC ( Digital to Analog Converter) do you use? And let’s not get into the headroom conversation! We could be hear/here for days. YOUR THOUGHTS SIR ?

Most of the "cheating" techniques of today (drum sampling, 'tuning vocals, etc...) where possible in the 80s, but were not ubiquitous, easily available, readily understood, or powerful enough to save a duff production. Cheers.
Rock on!
Thank you for explaining this. I was wondering.
😀👍
I'd like to see how you stack backing vocals to get that classic wall of sound power chorus that def leppard is famous for.
Hahaha! Thanks for the visit! Rock on! 😀
What I took away from this , is JE was much better than I ever thought.
Indeed!
Thanks for the tip.
One of my inspirations Joe Elliot is an amazing vocalist
👍👍👍
I was in "Hysteria" listening to these isolated vocals!!! True production magic and your effects in the end made such a dramatic improvement!
Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
@@kentamplin Merry Christmas to you and thank you for bringing such great knowledge and humor to my day!
I'm so impressed I really love this series and I just want to thank you Ken cause you are the only vocal coach on youtube that does this whole isolated vocal thing and you explain it so well and understandable also your whole vibe is just so friendly and funny I always have to smile throughout your videos and I learned so much while watching your videos I just can't belive that you're doing so much for free for those who just can't afford it
you are turly a good soul Thank you so much and Bless you and your family!
ps. I think who also could be Interesting in this series are high voices like Don Dokken, Miljenko Matijevic, Sebastian Bach :)
Hope to get to those artists, too! Glad you're enjoying the series!
I’ve loved your music since the 90’s! I love your videos- you seem like such a cool laid back dude that still loves music! Thank you Ken!
Awesome! Thank you!
Very cool video! I love Def Leppard! Great guys who work their asses off. I often find that my favorite artists are not always my favorite vocalists from a pure vocal talent aspect!
Indeed! Rock on!
Ken is the man he really gives you tips that work
Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
14:55 you were explaining the auto tune/punch thing and sang the whole line head voice then chest without interruption and a giant light bulb went off in my head because I am like OH THAT is why I sound that way when trying to hit a louder higher note....checking out your course, in 2 days you have become my fav channel...just well done man
Love you doing this tutorials. Born hardrocker, cannot sing, but this series makes me remember the great days of rock. Keep it up!
Glad you like them!
I love the Slang album from 1996. One of the reasons is that Joe sings a few songs in his lower register. Listen to Work It Out
I guess that the "autotune" effect around 15:22 was not because Joe could not connect his head voice to chest; it's more like an artifact of the doubling (frequency/phase difference).
Thanks for weighing in!
They also had a Fairlight which they could sample a vocal line and adjust it. The harmonizer also had a keyboard controller.
Also the drums are from the Fairlight as well I think.
During last summer’s tour with Motley, they did a lot of backstage video for social media, and you heard quite a bit of vocal warm ups using scales.
I always liked Def Leppard.
Me too!
I think the song Hysteria probably is the best showcase of his actual vocals, I've been loving singing that song on Smule
Thanks for weighing in, theonlyredspecial!
This series is the best thing on RUclips!
Glad you're enjoying it!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy THOROUGHLY!!!
Amen!
🤘🤘🤘
Thank you.✌
You bet, Jeff!
@@kentamplin 😎
Wow joe is just as amazing as you think, thanks for the insight
Rock on!
One of the most helpful videos you’ve ever done. Thank you so much Ken. I really really really learned a lot in this one. In fact I am quite sure that I am going to go be playing in my studio and using this as a reference😊 Your advice is always been appreciated - rock on
Glad it was helpful, Iron Fist!
Thank you this was awesome I still love Def Leppard and he can sang even without all the tricks but it's just fun to know how they got that sound
Glad you enjoyed it, Glenn!
Hell yeah it sounds alot better when you start with the reverbs and delay...hats off to u 🎤🎤
😊
Of course, he may have sung this differently before the producer said, "shorten that", "punctuate this", etc., so that it would sit over the guitars, etc. That takes a lot of guess work for the singer who thinks, "this seems sort of destructive to my singing".
Plus, there are some killed frequencies that were I integral to the natural default of the original singing. It's like movie production - we're not meant to see what's partly destroyed to gel with other things.
Rock on!
Thank you so much Ken!!! So awesome that you take the time to read your subscribers comments. Thanks again for the awesome content! I love this series
My pleasure, Evan!
This is a really interesting analysis of Joe Elliots vocals. It does make you wonder if they’d have had the same success with Pyromania if Mutt Lang wasn’t involved..
Glad you enjoyed it, John!
finding this channel is an amazing find!
Love hearing that!
Reminds me of my 11 yr old singing ac/dc and he try’s to sing like him it was funny he got that high I just looked at him like 👍 that’s great Drakey I love getting him to like older rock groups like ac/dc ,queen , Manson, Bowie, ect
Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄
Saw def lepparf 2 years ago.... still awesome
Great to hear that!
Rock on! Thanks for listening! 😀
Thanks for listening!
I was wondering if you considered doing a breakdown on kiss
Or how about The Bee Gees
More of these videos PLEASE SIR!
More to come!
Love the video and learned here.🤘
Indeed! Rock on!
Any chance you could do a video on the "secrets" vocalist use when singing live through vocal mics? Things like how to use mic distancing to vary the vocal delivery etc .. ?
I hope to, hazor!
Awesome job dissecting this classic, Ken.
Thanks, Bill!
Awesome overview. You obviously know your stuff so well and as a rock music fan, I learned so much. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
I saw them on the Hysteria tour and Joe was awesome. Strong voice and plenty of stamina. I would love to hear a single take of this song and see if it really needed to be done line by line.
Great band!
Wow, i had the same thought , singer is not who has best voice, but who is crazy and gutsy enough to come and sing in front of people. Also psychologically strong to control crowd, be interesting, and take any shi* from people
Indeed! Thanks for listening.
The great thing about Joe is that he could pull it off live somehow despite all the production tricks
Indeed!
I heard Mutt made Joe sing something so many times, he was in tears because he got so frustrated.
But all that hard work paid off nicely for the boys... ☺️
Yes it did.
David Coverdale gave him advice
@@luvyesmusici4886 David is a natural talent. Joe is a genuine rock star enthusiast they all still love what they do and would be playing now if it wasn't for this mess we are in...
Doubling is one of Mutt's specialties!
Rock on!
An isolated vocal analysis for Knights of Cydonia by Muse
It would be interesting to see your thoughts on the moment where there are at least 4 voices at the same time (in the bridge)
Thanks for the suggestion.
Your a total engineer genius
I can watch this for days
Awesome!
Thanks for weighing in, Philip!
Def leppard is the best show on earth. No clowns make-up. No big rubber microphone and ass less chaps and a cowboy hat on. Like David of van halen. Just songs and jamming 🎸 🎸 🇬🇧
The best video series I have ever seen
Rock on! 👍😀
Wow this was awesome. Loved what you did at the end there with that “echoey” effect. Sounded amazing. Joe’s wheelhouse is his tone - that raspy smokers tone. He has a unique tone.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was my very first experience with
you, and WoWzA!!!
💥❤️🔥💥❤️🔥💥❤️🔥💥
It was AUTO TUNE in the chorus! Well the closest thing at the time…I believe Mutt used the Eventide Harmonizer as a pitch correction device!
You're awesome dude! I'm loving this series of breaking down these isolated vocals, so telling! Keep a-rollin' Ken!
Thanks! Will do!
That was very interesting about the voice modeling stuff... Was veryvery helpful..
maybe in a future video some indepth vocal recording tutorial (and multiple cam setup hahaha)
I love you sharing all your secrets.. thx man..
Maybe one day, Euxim!
