When I heard Bon Jovi's "Livin on a prayer" when I was 10 years old, I was fascinated. I sat in our living room at home and put on the vinyl single. I already got goosebumps from the beginning of the song with the keyboards and the mysterious atmosphere. And then Jon started with his smoky power voice. I had never heard anything like that before. I found it fascinating how high he could sing in this style. Of course I noticed even then that he could never sing the song live in this way. He allegedly didn't want to record the song at the time, because it was way too high for live performances. Now when I hear his voice isolated in Ken's video, I still think it's awesome. Though technically not perfect or an overproduced thin voice. Maybe it's the imperfection that creates the charm. Sometimes it just sounds awesome, because the voice has personality and touches you.
Dude I never realized how much reverb was used (definitely not taking anything away from his vocals). Love the fact that you brought up the emotion that comes from ‘true’ vocals without auto tune.

i read somewhere that Jon, every record, would sing at his peak ability in range and power. Which subsequently made all of it increasingly difficult to sing live as he aged. like "Always".
@@jrssww yeah, but he would sing just like the record before 86 (during the beginning of 86 too). He also would sing with his actual abilities when they had to just perform one song or short shows.
Well Mr. Ken, you explained it right. When a singer use more voice that came from a throat, voice can't be used for long. No matter how high the song is, sing it in a proper way
I'll be damned, I've heard this song a million times, the isolated vocals who knows how many times, and you're right Ken - they did copy/paste the first and second choruses. I even checked the phase alignment, they almost cancel out... however they are minutely pitch/time shifted. That said, Jon blew his voice out countless times and smoked for 15 years too - that didn't help his vocal longevity. But in his prime he was untouchable!!!
The video is well made and provides good information on the techniques used to record Bon Jovi's vocals for the song "Living On A Prayer". I also like that the author mentions that "UnMixIt" can be used to isolate vocals out of any song
When jon recorded this song he was 24. You can hear the Jersey attitude come through, which I like plus he just goes for it alittle edge but that's Rock. It's a top rock song wouldn't want it any other way. It's a damn hard song to sing so congrats. Richie is tremendous singer more blue in his voice both work well together 🎤🎸
Oh my God.. I'm a guitar player who can't sing at all (which bothers me all the time), but still I love Ken Tamplin's videos so much, I can't stop watching him analyse all the songs I grew up with. It's interesting, fascinating, entertaining and inspiring, all at the same time.
Jon and Meat Loaf are singers who I wish got some training. They could have been so much more than they were, which is saying something. Would be interesting to see Sambora's vocal take on this. He carried this song in the high range for so long.
I notice on the New Jersey album after this, he used a little more deeper style of singing. You can hear this the songs Lay your hands on me and Wild as the Wind. He also held notes longer on some songs at a lower key with the help more of Richie as a backup. He tested it out by saying "come on" a lot in his songs I've noticed and punching notes in songs. Like the album These Days, he used a lot of different deeper registers along with the high pitch notes, which doesn't get a lot of credit because the songs were getting more toned down. I always also thought his vocals in dry county on Keep the Faith were really underrated and uniquely good. One can totally see why singing live is a challenge for him and why he has always often chosen to sing much flatter live (or nowadays sadly not by choice). Thanks for the analysis on his voice! Robert Plants is another one I have always found interesting - especially how he's changed his singing style in the middle of his early solo work in the 80s.
Jon Bon Jovi like other famous music artists has his own style of singing and it's made them millions. I didn't know there was a right or wrong in someone's style of singing. There is music artists I don't like how they sing but that's their style. They're gifted with their TALENT, their songwriting, singing, and music.
Always makes me smile to remember that this song almost never saw the light of day. JBJ wanted to give it away to a compilation record rather than put it on their own album. Richie Sambora had to persuade him to put it on Slippery When Wet.
Wow, Ken you hit the nail on on the head. The Maestro in Washington, when I brought this song to him, said, specifically of this song, that if he kept singing like this this he would hurt himself. So, hats off to you that you said the exact same thing. Now for those of you that are reading this, the Maestro was one of the best vocal coaches around. He lived in this humble old house down by the water, it didn't look like much when I first got there. Walking into his home, where he did his lessons you saw all the autographed pics all over his walls with people thanking him. He was a bit overweight with his Santa Claus glasses, white hair slicked back, followed by a huge ponytail. Ok, I thought this ought to be good. Then we went over to the piano, it was a grand(i think a baby) it was so long ago I don't remember but the living room was small. He started doing scales accompanied on the piano, just to see where I was at, as well as to show me where I could or should be. He had a strong round voice. Then he hit this high note, I forget exactly the note but it was F*ing high, in his head voice, with little effort, and I was blown away. This guy could hit notes I could only imagine, this was around the time of guys like Michael Sweet, Jeff Tate and Rob Halford and had never seen anyone pull it off in person. The nicest guy. Anyway, in my opinion, I believe Ken is just as good if not better and I would go to him in a heartbeat if I was still singing or wanted to sing. Ok, I'm rambling but if Ken reads this, I believe he can attest to this story and can tell you its true and the only way you would ever know this, is if you had been in his (the Maestro) home. So, in a long winded round about way, I'm saying that Ken is the new, and our modern day Maestro. I believe he is the best. I'm 53yrs, was a studio musician in Vancouver (drummer) and I left that and joined the military. (RET 26years in) I wish you all the best with your singing endeavors. God bless.
Ken, that's a really informative and thorough vox analysis on an issue that's been questioned for decades. Glad you provided your expertise to learn about it.
Could you do reactions to some of Richie’s live singing? He’s my all time favorite guitar player and a phenomenal singer. He’s also done well to preserve his voice!
I agree his vocals on Sante fe, something to believe in and some of the non 80’s he’s really belting and he changed his style from early 80’s to mid to late 80’s or even the 90’s.

This video popped up on my channel because I am a big fan of Bon Jovi! I’ve been in three concerts and his voice is really damaged. And now, without Richie helping him, it’s not the same at all. I liked when you said that he sounds a cute Jersey boy...😁 Great job! I am Brazilian and I live in Ohio.
I was always super hard on myself when singing thinking it wasnt even very good bc I diddnt sound like any professionals, turns out the professionals don’t always sound so professional either, thanks for the confidence !
I was in a hair metal tribute band out of Detroit called RockStar from 09-2014. Our singer Kelley Huff used to nail this like it was nothing. I remember my first gig with them was at the Machine Shop in Flint, MI. I remember when were doing our sound check, and it was his turn... It was scary good!
I'm a little late, but oh my goodness not only are jons lead vocals in this incredible, but the backing vocals are AMAZING. Especially during the key change at the end. I was never able to find out if it was Jon, Richie, or David doing the highest harmony, but i need to know ❤️ love your videos by the way.
It amazing to watch and listen to these isolated tracks almost now and days you don’t hear a lot artists sing without auto tunes or some effect to make them sound better
I'll say one thing about Jon. He's a Rock guy, but I've heard him do some awesome Old School covers by Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Elvis Presley and others, plus he can croon. His Country work was good too. To me he's an underrated vocalist.
wow, few years ago I can still sing bon jovi songs while I got my tips mostly from Ken and I used to sing at school everybody loves it. When I got too busy with my life having a job, normal life, forgot about singing as if in my country almost everybody sings and I can't find it to be a good career. Now I thought about singing again but I lost the voice hoping to get help for it maybe a different exercise and now Ken again! so good to see it's almost a million subscriber! I'm glad to see you're still making tutorials Ken! Keep it up!
Jon has continuously said that he was against the key change towards the end of the song. Knowing that it would destroy the longevity of the ability to do it in key. Not only that, he didn’t even want to put the song on the album. It was Richie that convinced him to do so. Probably because of how difficult it would be to sing night after night. Any case, it’s a great song… Just not for singers. Not on a continuous basis. It’s an easy way to destroy your voice very quickly.
So true about how Jon's singing has changed. I remember thinking to myself as a kid that he's ruining his voice singing that way. It didn't sound like his natural singing voice.
I really loved this one as I was a teenager and ate, slept & breathed Bon Jovi back in the 80's. 😂 When I was younger I could never hit those high notes so my band never covered this song. Now I can kill this song because I started taking care of my voice and not abusing it. So when the guys in my band wanted to stop this song RIGHT at the chord change crescendo and go in to You Give Love A Bad Name, I refused. I did not want the audience to think I was incapable of hitting those notes. To date, it's one of our most popular songs & I still love doing it. And I never touch my head voice on this one. My voice definitely got better when I started taking care of it properly. 😊
@@kentamplin I'm thoroughly enjoying the isolated vocal series you're doing. I love hearing isolated vocals from before things got auto-tuned. We know our favorite singers are human, but the isolated vocals shows us that.
Love bon jovi he is great livin on a prayer was a big song and such a great song love it I can hear the reverb and the effect when he spoke it echoes when he speaks there's a lot of echo when he sings always loved bon jovi I can hear the boyish sound yes he was a little pitchy I heard that but the man can sing and he is a legend love how he sings his techniques are great thanks for walking through this showing how he does it and what he does with his voice Ken his echoes are pitchy but he is great live his rasp to 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
During the These Days tour they opened with Living on a Pray and You give love a bad name. Which was epic, because they knocked out early and took the anticipation away to the point that you could enjoy the show more. Ken, you should do Dry County. That's such an underrated song.
Ken ur an amazing talent. I appreciate hearing ur expertise on all of the songs u review. Bon Jovi is by far my favourite band and u are by far my favourite singing expert.
I'm surprised so many of these iconic singers never really were taught how to sing. Natural talent but sadly they paid for it over the years. I guess In some ways it's a bit like neglecting your instrument over the decades. There is a price to pay in the end. Shame bon jovi can't really do these tracks justice anymore. He has had a heck of a career tho. Thanks Ken you manage to be educational and entertaining. Not easy to do.
@@michellebritvec Yeah, but his vocal training wasn't consistent. He got a little bit during the Slippery/New Jersey period but that was more to help prevent totally blowing his voice for the tours. It's pretty obvious he applied himself a little more to vocal training during the early 90's leading to the KTF period. He's mentioned getting vocal lessons to help him warm up/warm down and prolong his voice during tours, but he's also said people (even doctors) have warned him that he was stressing his voice too much but he ignored them and was able to "finish long tours" with his voice still strong. So it's unlikely that he was doing any serious training (otherwise he would surely would have given more consideration to his vocal health) until probably 2008 when his voice made quite a return.
Jon was definitely able to reach the notes in the studio...live was another story even back in the day. Just a tough tune. From things I’ve seen and heard, Jon wasn’t alone in not being able to hit every note live. Brad Delp and Boston had some trouble and Brad’s voice was otherworldly.
Wow Ken again without disrespecting this classic you made me laugh all the way through the video! Thanks for this series, they are wonderful and so are you!!!
It's odd, but I've always noticed all of these punches and cuts throughout this song, but it's always "made it" for me. It makes it sound special and unique. Really cool stuff man.
Another awesome video in this great series! Not only is if so interesting and informative, but also so entertaining! Love your sense of humour, Ken, and your little anecdotes that you share, it’s what makes this series particularly great and enjoyable.
Ken, is amazing! This dude knows his stuff. I love these tear downs. This is my favorite channel. And yes he does respond to all his comments unlike other u tubers thank you for that
Wow Ken! This Format, never stop doing that, this is so great! I mean you're already n impressive vocalist/vocal coach but you also know a lot about studio techniques and recording, it's so cool to share some of that with us. I think this really unique, nobody does that, only Ken Tamplin!
I don't even to listen to the video to press the like button... Love ya, Ken! Love this era of music too. I'm a drummer that always liked singing, and have been told I'm ok, but absolutely hate my voice. Just easier to work with singers I like around town, and one in across the country. Thanks for all the work you do!
Ironically, Jon Bon Jovi didn't even want to include "Prayer" on the "Slippery" album. It was the great Richie Sambora who convinced him to do it. I guess Jon was already thinking back then: "My God, if I have to sing this song every night, I'll have no voice left at some point" 😀. Fortunately for him, either his bandmates or the audience help him out on the chorus 😉. What I've always found interesting about this song is that when the band plays it in the up-tempo version, the focus is more on the music, but when Jon and Richie played it with just two acoustic guitars, the focus was more on the lyrics and the song sounded surprisingly melancholic.
What you were saying about them just copying the first chorus vocals and pasting it into the second - I totally agree with you that it's not ideal. I really gravitate to the details - stuff like that little vibrato in his vocal when he says "hold on" in the second pre-chorus, I've always loved that, and also the way he sings "half way there" in the second repeat of the key change chorus where you can hear him almost running out of breath... stuff like that is really cool and copy pasting that second chorus takes away from that - which is actually a little weird because they didn't do that for the rest of the backing - the keys are more upfront in the second chorus, which I quite like.
Your explanation is spot on! I sing well but I need these finite details to make me a better singer. As I have aged, my head voice is not as strong anymore.
..I have always loved Bon Jovi, and I think Jon Bon Jovi (Bongiovi) has a great singing voice...however, I have never felt that he has a very robust/durable/powerful voice..you can tell it on the records, an I actually saw him live in early 1987..Cinderella opened for them, and Tom Keifer definitely turned in a stronger vocal performance than JBJ...Richie Sambora seemed to be helping him out a lot..actually, I think Richie Sambora was one of Bon Jovi's secret weapons..sort of similar to Michael Anthony in Van Halen...
Way back when, I always admire that kind of voice distortion and until now I always doing it. Now I found out that, that was not the healthy way of distorting my voice so I want to listen more on your free tutorial. I don't want to lose my voice and yet thank God I never felt that. I already listen to your version of that song as well as summer of 69, separate ways, she's gone, specially my favorite song, bad name and numb and so on. I tried that kind of vocal distortion such as yours but Ken, I can't. I always hear the difference. I want to have that kind voice distortion as yours Ken.
One thing I always wanted to know was how Jon performed his signature I'll Be There For You scream... He used that in multiple songs throughout the entire New Jersey Tour...
Im a big fan of Bon Jovi! I love Jon Bon Jovi! This is so right. I dont care if he stands there. He already earned were he is. With all said he has got better since pandamic. I cant lie. Richie is missed. Love Bon Jovi!
Lets just appreciate fact that despite almost 1mln subs. Ken still reads comment and give us replay
I do my best, teken020!

Well Mr. Ken, you explained it right. When a singer use more voice that came from a throat, voice can't be used for long. No matter how high the song is, sing it in a proper way
Thanks for listening! Rock on!
Surprise!
😊Thanks for listening!
Oh my God.. I'm a guitar player who can't sing at all (which bothers me all the time), but still I love Ken Tamplin's videos so much, I can't stop watching him analyse all the songs I grew up with. It's interesting, fascinating, entertaining and inspiring, all at the same time.
How nice!
That whispery tone he does is so awesome. Sounds so powerful especially on the bridge, cool how can do it with the small voice you were talking about
👍💜😀
😊 Thanks for listening!
Always makes me smile to remember that this song almost never saw the light of day. JBJ wanted to give it away to a compilation record rather than put it on their own album. Richie Sambora had to persuade him to put it on Slippery When Wet.
Thanks for the info!
God bless.
👍💜😀
8:25 wow, brings back some memories. Thanks for doing this song.
My pleasure!
Jesse Ledford Music 👍
Bon Jovi is super over-hated in my opinion. One of my favorites
😊 Thanks for listening!
Well he is a Huge Clinton supporter... earning the hate 🤣🤣🙊😣🤡😉
I agree his vocals on Sante fe, something to believe in and some of the non 80’s he’s really belting and he changed his style from early 80’s to mid to late 80’s or even the 90’s.

Damn I can't see anyone being able to carry that kind of vocal strain for too long. One of my favorite songs from the 80's
Bon Jovi is great, because he sounds like he sounds and that's why he's a amazing Rock Singer 🤘🏻
Rock on!
Rock on!
@@kentamplin 🤟🏽😁
He sounds way more like Axl Rose than I'd ever realised! Obviously still very different, but closer than I'd have thought- great stuff Ken!
👍💜😀
I know nothing about singing - this was a super fun video to watch I totally enjoyed it.
I was always super hard on myself when singing thinking it wasnt even very good bc I diddnt sound like any professionals, turns out the professionals don’t always sound so professional either, thanks for the confidence !
Go for it, Gabriel!
I love these kind of vocal science evaluations. So interesting.
Happy to hear that, John!
Awesome!
Thanks for the visit!
I'll say one thing about Jon. He's a Rock guy, but I've heard him do some awesome Old School covers by Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Elvis Presley and others, plus he can croon. His Country work was good too. To me he's an underrated vocalist.
Cool, VIDEOHEREBOB!
Jons Intonation of "fever" is great work
wow, few years ago I can still sing bon jovi songs while I got my tips mostly from Ken and I used to sing at school everybody loves it. Keep it up!
Thanks for the visit, Zombie! Keep on rockin'!
Bon Jovi - Runaway (live 1984) reaction, please! I was blown away when I first listened to that.
Great suggetsion, Petar!
Hearing that vocal in isolation for the first time ever, I'm pretty confident that the key change part was tracked with the tape slowed down.
This song is a vocal monster imo. Singing it for every concert for 30 years... Pfew, better Jon + the crowd than me. 😋
Hahaha! Indeed!
Thanks for the thoughts, Jennifer!
@@kentamplin I'm thoroughly enjoying the isolated vocal series you're doing. I love hearing isolated vocals from before things got auto-tuned. We know our favorite singers are human, but the isolated vocals shows us that.
Love bon jovi he is great livin on a prayer was a big song and such a great song love it I can hear the reverb and the effect when he spoke it echoes when he speaks there's a lot of echo when he sings always loved bon jovi I can hear the boyish sound yes he was a little pitchy I heard that but the man can sing and he is a legend love how he sings his techniques are great thanks for walking through this showing how he does it and what he does with his voice Ken his echoes are pitchy but he is great live his rasp to 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks, Cade.
Your welcome ken
During the These Days tour they opened with Living on a Pray and You give love a bad name. Which was epic, because they knocked out early and took the anticipation away to the point that you could enjoy the show more. Ken, you should do Dry County. That's such an underrated song.
Rock on!
My favourite Jovi song.
Ken ur an amazing talent. I appreciate hearing ur expertise on all of the songs u review. Bon Jovi is by far my favourite band and u are by far my favourite singing expert.
Thanks, Sheldon! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾
I really like Bon Jovi. So cool to just hear the voice, without the music. All these details on his voice. Wow! Not something you normally think of.
By the way have you ever done something on Joey Tempest from Europe?
😊 Thanks for listening!
My students have done a few covers.
The best vocal coach did it again!!!
Thanks for listening, Fabian!
IT goes to show how important it is to take care of your instrument, theonlyredspecial!
He did eventually take lessons after he started experiencing the effects which, I gather, is too late.
Men are jealous... Bon Jovi is voice + soft hair + hot 80s tank tops + positive energy 😍 He's meooow. Blaze of glory was my fav song.
That's a great song!
I really like how his voice isn't too perfect . there is some good emotion in the performance yea he really pushed it and I love that. good one ken
Glad you enjoyed it, Timothy!
Rock on!
Slippery when wet and new jersey are two of the greatest albums ever made imo.
This is my absolute favorite band, thanks for reacting!
😀👍
You certainly have a grasp on the science of this. Good work Sir!
Wow Ken again without disrespecting this classic you made me laugh all the way through the video! Thanks for this series, they are wonderful and so are you!!!
Thank you, Jose!
Glad you are enjoying it!
Ken, is amazing! This dude knows his stuff. I love these tear downs. This is my favorite channel. And yes he does respond to all his comments unlike other u tubers thank you for that
Iconic song. That's why he can still fill a stadium even though it sounds a bit like he's singing through a kazoo these days.
So true, Scott!
Thank You Ken for everything you do for us singers
My pleasure, Per.
Wow Ken!
This Format, never stop doing that, this is so great!
I mean you're already n impressive vocalist/vocal coach but you also know a lot about studio techniques and recording, it's so cool to share some of that with us.
I think this really unique, nobody does that, only Ken Tamplin!
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks, danlc95!
You're great Ken! i love Jon bon jovi very much!
😀👍
That key change at the end is tremendous all the same. I don't know how anyone can hit those notes. Kudos to him (and Ken of course)
😊Thanks for listening!
Thanks for the info, Alec!
I'm sure it was Producer Bruce Fairbairn to say we take it on the Album. Jon first had doubts because of its Pop Metal sound
Another analysis that deserves 👍👍! It's a shame that Jon Bon Jovi can't hit those high notes anymore like he did on this record.
Thanks for watching, Benji!
I love these videos. Ken's persona always cheers me up, and his Dio videos are awesome. How can one man smile so much?
Rock on!
“You live for the fight when that’s all you”ve got!!!!!!!
That's right!
Your explanation is spot on! I sing well but I need these finite details to make me a better singer. As I have aged, my head voice is not as strong anymore.
Hope they help!
Ken great analysis of what really happens in a studio! Especially in the days of recording to tape!
Rock on!
I love Joe Elliot. I’m going to go see what was said about him! I never realized Jon’s voice had so much range.
Deam , Jon have a amazing voice😳😳😳
Is a big singer 👏🏻
This video blew my mind. You are a musical genius. Just when I thought I knew it all, I wasn't even close!
Life long learning!
I'd love to see you do a video on Brad Delp, of Boston. Truly an underrated singer, in my opinion.
the best singer ever
..I have always loved Bon Jovi, and I think Jon Bon Jovi (Bongiovi) has a great singing voice...however, I have never felt that he has a very robust/durable/powerful voice..you can tell it on the records, an I actually saw him live in early 1987..Cinderella opened for them, and Tom Keifer definitely turned in a stronger vocal performance than JBJ...Richie Sambora seemed to be helping him out a lot..actually, I think Richie Sambora was one of Bon Jovi's secret weapons..sort of similar to Michael Anthony in Van Halen...
I worked that concert. Just wondered were you saw them.
I am not a musician at all but I am really enjoying these videos! They take my appreciation of favorite songs and musicians to another level!
Also, would you consider doing at least one Bee Gees or Beatles isolated vocals song?
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
Dying to hear your take on Vince Neil's isolated vocal for looks that kill.Love this series Ken,Great stuff.
Stand by.
Love your videos and I think this shows how great of a singer JBJ is. He's not afraid to strip it down or even do a capella
For sure.
It would be cool to see you analysing The Final Countdown of Europe!

Always and bed of roses would be great
this is going to be something to look forward to ;)
Way back when, I always admire that kind of voice distortion and until now I always doing it.
There is definitely a technique to it, Arjay.
Can't wait to have your program Ken ❤ I'm so excited ❤
One thing I always wanted to know was how Jon performed his signature I'll Be There For You scream... He used that in multiple songs throughout the entire New Jersey Tour...
Rock on!
Man, what a voice. Amazing
Thanks for watching, Embaixador!
I liked that he sounded light and hard. Sounds contradictory but I love it. Very refreshing. Cheers teacher 👋😊 nice video
Glad you enjoyed it!
I listen for technique now when listening to a singer thanks to you! I find I enjoy the music more!
Happy to hear that, Donna!
You got to do a Paul Stanley isolated vocals vid!
Thanks for the suggestion, Victor!
Im a big fan of Bon Jovi! I love Jon Bon Jovi! This is so right. I dont care if he stands there. He already earned were he is. With all said he has got better since pandamic. I cant lie. Richie is missed. Love Bon Jovi!
