I love both eras of VH. But there is a huge difference between them. Dave was fun to watch, but Sammy was fun to listen to. I saw Sammy a few years ago. He absolutely killed it. Best concert I've seen in years.
Vocally in VH it’s Hagar hands down for me. I saw an interview with EVH shortly after Sammy joined saying he could now write anything and Sam could sing it, where as that wasn’t the case before. I’d love to hear your thoughts on his vocals on Don’t tell me from Balance, that one of my favourites. Great track and killer vocals as far as I’m concerned! Love the channel Ken hope you hit 1 millions soon! 🤘
Sammy is one of the nicest guys ever. Best choice ever for VH. I love VAN HAGAR. Love the way the band matured with Sammy's arrival. Sammy's voice is one of the coolest and strongest in RNR history.
LOVE THE VIDEO !! Ken is 100% correct about "straining" the vocal and ruining your voice. BUT Sammy is relaxed and you can hear it in his breathing. he has some "grit" in the vocal because it is acquired after years of perfecting the technique. So yes Ken you "feel" he is straining because most singers have to for those notes. I know he's not straining because I can hear it in the technique that I am familiar with. I am 53 and can nail this and "Source of Infection" as well. Technique DO NOT STRAIN.
I think another reason that Sammy's voice has lasted a long time is because he's looked after himself way better than most rock singers. He doesn't smoke and didn't go off the deep end with booze or drugs.
Stumbled across this video, I never knew you two were cousins! You both sing very good, and I hear a similarity . Sammy is my absolute favorite Rock singer/ showman, performer etc..he's ALWAYS in it for the Fans! I'm really hoping to see him for the 1st time in years out here w the Circle @ Auga Caliente in Rancho Mirage next month.... He's such a "regular guy" stripped of everything materialistic...he's genuine. As are you, Doing these videos for the benefit of people...to enjoy. Must be in the blood line... Hopefully I'll go and sing along anyways and annoy every human within earshot... 😂
I love all Van Halen singers but I do lean towards Sammy. He seems like the guy who would want to make sure everyone is having a good time. I love his energy. I love his vocals. Makes me happy. 😊
I think the Hagar era in VH was one of the grandest musical experiments in rock history. VH totally changed their sound, left their past behind, and explored EVH’s awesome skill set in writing. I respect you sharing your analysis.
I couldn’t have said it better. I always thought of Roth era as partying and the Haggar era as it’s time to grow up. Michael Anthony’s backup vocals on this track are absolutely golden!!
I'm really blown away at how much effect is being used on his voice. I knew there was some, but I had no idea there was so much. And how many punches there are throughout. Like each verse was done a multitude of times then the best ones were chosen and it was all pieced together. Wow! Having said all that, Sammy is still one of my faves. Crazy! Great breakdown! 😎
Holy vocal production! The effects are great! I don't have a camp when it comes to Van Halen, but I think that Sammy wrote more emotive songs with Eddie and opened up Eddie's creativity in respect to song writing, great song!
I'm definitely a Van Hagar fan. Wasn't a VH fan before. Love Sammy's Three Lock Box album! When Sammy Hagar first join VH I recalled him trying to sound like DLR while singing some VH songs and sounded terrible in my opinion. But once they got new music out and Sammy doing his own thing it was great. I always thought he took VH to a higher level.
I think "Dreams" would be the best song to dissect what Sammy does and is capable of. I think even he will say he had push new limits for that performance. But maybe you thought of this but it's just that hard to replicate what his voice is doing for the sake of the video
Sammy has always been my favorite, He has an Effortless singing voice, Having said that I have to give him a break because of his age now, But still killing it, he's lost his iconic Sammy scream. Sammy your my Mammy! 😎
I am really glad you got around to doing a video on Sammy Hagar. The guy has so much going for him. He was one of those people on welfare and food stamps and was able to get off both government handouts, which is admirable. Plus, he is a rock star in every sense of those two words, yet he is so down to earth with people. I saw him on a video where he was on a radio show and the radio host said he only said 4000 copies of his album and yet Sammy still congratulated him even though he has done much better than that by himself and with VH. That is a very humble person and it is refreshing to see from someone who has hit it big. Sammy is just a great guy all the way around. You can't help but like him.
This my friends is a channel that is a perfect example of someone just sharing their own passion about something they love. Ken's passion about music and vocal talent is unmistakable. It's not some guy trying to create RUclips videos because he wants to be a RUclips star. It's a man with an incredible passion for music and a passion for sharing that, that just happens to also have a RUclips channel. Which coincidentally is the same reason this channel is so big.
Sammy is such a gifted entertainer, underrated in some ways. Thanks for shedding some light on his techniques. The Red Rocker still goin strong I might add. Hasn't lost much at all really. I have a strong hunch he learned to take care of his voice a few years back, which he never has talked about that I know of. Maybe its good genes Ken lol. God Bless.
Great break down. I'm right in Sammy's range too. I avoid the compressed air sound he produces because I'll burn out. I prefer a bigger rounder tone. My vocal coach is an Opera singer so I've taken her advice to relax and not force the sound through. I'd like to keep singing for years to come so I'll take the slower road. Sammy is an amazing vocalist and musician, definitely one of my favorites.
I’ve seen Sammy with VH and solo. Sammy absolutely has one of the best voices in rock and can shred like no other. He has not lost any of his voice. He is perfection. DLR is a showman. Hagar is a musician. There’s a huge difference in their stage presence. I prefer Hagar . 💯💯💯
It sounds to me the “doubler” effect in the chorus vocals is perhaps slap-back echo around 20ms, a trick us guitar players use to achieve a big stereo sound live. Anyway, he then has an additional delay and reverb throughout the track. It sounds like they added a flanger effect to the bebop section in both the vocals and guitar. Killer track!
they both have unique voices that is what made them. I love sammy for sure, but for me ( minus all the drama with DLR and Eddie etc) if you take that out, for me, Van Halen is DLR as the lead. Sammy was amazing and did some great songs with them but im old school van halen.
DRL is definitely better at showmanship and “stage performance ,” however, SH is a better singer and songwriter, I am happy that we got to see both of them perform with such an amazing band
I've always felt Sammy's singing was effortless...I still do. The guy is a force of nature. I was wondering if you did a video on Russell Allen, I guess I'll check all your library lol. Cheers.
Amazing analysis As a lay guy about sing, I just can still saying that Sammy is a GREAT and high quality singer. Love his voice and style. You got a new subscriber!
Sammy has been one of my favs maybe #1. His longevity, professionalism, and stage performance all top notch, would absolutely love to hear a duet with you two. A trio with Bob Carlisle would be probably too much to ask, ill wait til Heaven.
Everyone we need to be thanking Ken for always reading our comments and commenting back to us. That is extremely rare for RUclipsrs to do especially ones that have hundreds and hundreds of comments. There was only one other RUclipsr that I know of that does this. So let's thank Ken or looking at our comments every single time and commenting back to us. I've been going to say this for a long time and now is the time. Thank you so much. You are very appreciated Ken Tamplin🥰🎸🎶🎙💿✝️
I don't call myself a singer but I can mimic Sammy Hagar In His abilities are comfortable he's built that way I don't know how much I sound like him and I would only do it in my car LOL I could get up on stage and play my drums but I could never get up and sing. but I know I'm hitting those notes and doing it from the diaphragm and it's comfortable there's no stress so it's natural it's natural for Sammy he's definitely not forcing it
I compress like Sammy, but power it from the diaphragm. And I can last a long time in that mode. Sammy Hagar and Jimi Jamison are my two soul brothers in the vocal realm.
He's one of the great singer that we have in the world; not only hard rock or heavy metal, but in the pop rock and why not in the music world, generally speaking. What a great singer and musician!
Thank you so much for doing this! Could you do "Dreams" too? His vocal is so high on that one. He said that he did things on that song that he didn't even know he could do.
Great video! I know many people know this tune from the Van Hagar era, but man .. "Judgement Day", "Feelin'", "Don't Tell Me", "Mine all Mine", "The Seventh Seal", really are some of Sammy's best vocal moments during his time in VH! But yeah definitely more corporate sounding overall. Mick Jones from Foreigner produced 5150!
Can I just mention how impressive it is that you respond to every single comment? Love your cousin’s music. That song is the one that got me into VH back in 1986! I love both versions of VH but Sam’s voice is just incredible, even more so that he can still do it at 73! Hope he keeps it going for many years to come. Love that he includes so many VH songs in his set list and is flying the VH banner high. RIP EVH 🎸🎶
When sammy hit the seen he changed the landscape of Van Halen.. because of Sam Van Halen grew up and we as fans got to grow up with them.. it was the greatest transition in Rock n roll history... As a side note Sam is one of coolest people.. but this coolness in the Hagar family doesn't stop with just Sam the entire Hagar/Tamplin family are the nicest people on the planet.. 🙏😇💜🐩.. VH FOREVER🎤🎸🥁 🖤
I like Sammy better as a lead vocalist for Van Halen than Dave because his voice has more range and versatility, and his delivery is more killer than Dave's. Rest in peace, Eddie Van Halen.
Well, your cousin had me hooked when I was 8ish years old in 2001 with one of his songs with Montrose. The first time I ever heard the opening line to Bad Motor Scooter it was hook line and sinker. Also at that time I didn't even know Sammy was ever in Montrose lol
I haven't this song by van Halen or Sammy Hagar but I'm fixing to hear it wow awesome vocals by Sammy Ken his range is killer awesome I always liked Sammy Hagar vocals he has a awesome rocking voice he is great love when he shows off his awesomeness van Halen is a awesome band I'll have to go back and listen to this song enjoy the stories to tell Ken about the band and sharing all this anyways Sammy is awesome he rocks 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
As usual interesting and informative to hear a breakdown of the vocals, you do a great job! Sammy is probably my favorite rocker. To me his voice has always sounded great and almost reminds me of an electric guitar at a higher pitch or a Ferrari engine at high rpm. Very fitting with that style of music but he can still sing slower ballads and has rocked it for years! Be interesting to hear you do a cover, impressive at few examples in this. Great job!
I'm from Brazil and I don't speak English. but I struggle to understand the English words. I understand musical language and I love Van Halen, thanks for the video. And yes, I'm still in love with Gabriela. 😊. A big hug for you, success. Kisses for Gabriela.
I have a CD compilation of Dave and Sams era in VH. I noticed on the recording "Why cant this be love" its played in C but I saw him a few a years ago on a Directv concert and Mona was the bassist and in that performance I noticed the song was lowered a half step to the key of B not Bflat just B , that may be why, hes preserved his voice so well over the years. Even Lou Gramm during the Head Games tour in 1979, had a song called. "Rev on the Red Line" the live version was sung much lower than the recorded version, but I wasnt put off by it, because Lou still sang it with passion as he did all his songs. Thanks Ken, keep opening our minds and ears.
I also love both iterations of VH - would love for you to touch on the one vocal that has been consistent through both - Michael Anthony’s incredible backing vocals. Amazing, clean, unstrained high voice. Def VH’s signature sound.
I know ppl complain they went commercial w Sammy but gosh this is when I LOVED their music!!! Missin Eddie bad. Always hoped they’d make up and get back to their music together
Sammy’s vocals and how he used that voice of his, I feel has a lot to do with his physical well being. Sammy has always been a health nut kinda guy, yea he party’s but he puts his,”know your limits” approach to it and I’ve heard him say that as well. Granted vocal compression is not good but he pulls it off and continues to do so because he rides his damn bikes all over those hills on the streets of the Bay Area. (Plus natural talent) That’s excellent exercise folks and I believe that it gives him an edge with his vocal stamina. His diaphragm gymnastics are insane and another tell tale sign at how good his health his. I love both Van Halen’s but I’ve always been a huge Sammy supporter I have seen him live with both Van Halen as well as solo and the man never fails to inspire. Great songs great vocals and a much, much greater Van Halen with Sammy up front. Thanks Ken!🎶
Hey Ken, props to you for being honest about being cousins with Sammy. Most would ride that horse for all they can get out of it. It just shows you are totally good with who you are. And that's cool.
I like it when you analyze the songs, the voices of the singers, especially from that wonderful time when rock was in fashion. I realize that before they didn't have much vocal technique but on the whole the music sounded very good. And well, we fans enjoyed and continue to enjoy them. Because rock will never go out of style right? Long life to rock and roll. By the way I love this song. Thank you for bringing it to my memory.
Ken.. Love these isolated tracks.. This request may be a little out of your comfort zone music wise.. But I would really love to hear you do a isolated vocals track on "Nights on Broadway" by the Bee Gees.. No auto tune there baby ! Talk about PERFECT harmonies.. I think those guys are pretty darn good vocalists !
Sammy is one of the biggest artists I have to thank. His work brings energy and positive feelings. I do prefer him over David. He's more complete in my opinion. He brought VH to a different, better level. Sammy's voice was blending very well with Michael Anthony's one. He's also a badass guitar player. Everytime I see some interviews, he always shares lots of enthusiasm as only young spirits can do. Ken, Great video and great explanation as always.
what rubbish...so what? You sound like people who like "good singing " ....expressing the bluesy vibe and attitude of early van halen is what mattered ....didnt need pavorotti to sing "like a rolling stone " to be a well conveyed pce of art ....i get what you are saying....but its not a competition ...so comparisons are merely subjective
I also love your band ‘shout’ and didn’t realise what a great guitarist and front man you are as well . I’m going to buy your albums , I love your music.
For my list, he is one of the best. Eddie was happy not only for his magnificent voice but his guitar playing. Thanks to Sammy s guitar , Eddie could do lost of fancy techniques on is guitar. I don't consider an ultimate singer, but a hell of musical entertainer. Now it is true that he is unique and lucky, because that style of singing is suicidal for any singer. My humble and respectful opinion. God bless you, Ken!!!
Great analysis on the great Sammy as a rock singer myself I agree with you about a more rounder sound, but I have to say that when he is singing the verses I don’t really hear that throaty sound, it sounds like more light sounding with a bit of grit.
Very good analysis.👍 I agree, how the heck does Hagar still have a voice?? Not only that, he still sounds as good as ever, and he started around 50 years ago!!!
I saw an interview, where Sammy said, he never really thought he was that good of a singer. I don’t know if he was just being humble? I was like, what??? I wish I sang as bad as SH thinks he does! Always been a fan of Sam & still am. He still sounds great!
I enjoyed the breakdown of this song and the doubler effect. I was lucky to see VH in 1981 and 1982 and several other tours with Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone. I like the early VH with DLR but when Sammy Hagar joined they went to another level.
I don't see any rough or hoarse singing on Sammy...it's clean and absolute power coming from his chest...however, I do agree that his compressing of the throat was the wrong choice...nonetheless, his power was raw!...could really hit those high notes live. But also, his songs with EVH were balanced, lots of high and medium notes...not high all the time. Plus, the band turned much more melodic...
Ken, you mentioned the interesting choice of holding back on the chorus when the verse was an instant assault. I wonder if that was because of the (to Sammy at the time) novelty of having Michael Anthony’s high harmonies to utilise. Always love your videos, Ken. Thanks!
This vid made realize why I am guilty as charged of not being fair to Sammy back in the day. It was probably some subconscious plain envy I hadn't worked over back then. Everyone back then was like that, and with time you learn to appreciate.
I'm not into singing, but I find your videos so super interesting, they are almost relaxing. Thank you for another great video and like I said before, Sam is the real Van Halen for me
Sam really is a badass.. he held on to his voice for so long.. did all the wrong techniques, he was amazing.. great analysis Ken..BTW, don't think I'm alone in this thought, these could be much longer and we'd stick with you through them
Mick Jones produced parts of it, Eddie Van Halen and Don Landee produced a lot of it and I believe Ted Templeman was involved minimally... Andy Johns was the producer on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Eddie and Don got some really hugh vocals out of Sammy on this album...I'd be curious to hear the iso vox on Dreams...that's crazy high in parts
Thanks Ken! Love Sammy! He's a complete freak of nature. He still has a killer range. Andy Johns produced the For Unlawful Carnal Knowlege. Mick Jones produced the 5150 album. Both great albums!
Sammy also stated in an interview with EVH, that he found & was more inspired to find more singing range with EVH's guitar playing skills and song writing ability.
I love sammy! One of rock's best lead singers and genuinely great guy. The power of his vocals are unmatched in my eyes. Thanks ken for this awesome video! 👍
Sammy is my all time favorite singer.. He makes me feel so energized and ready to take on the world.
I felt like Van Halen raised their musicianship bar once Sammy joined.
Thanks for weighing in, SonnyGTA!
Sammy is an amazing vocalist,Like everyone I wish those VH years had more hard rock , he did extremely well doing what he was doing tho.
Big time.
I agree. DLR is a showman, but seemed arrogant. Sammy is more approachable.
Absolutely agree!
I love both eras of VH. But there is a huge difference between them. Dave was fun to watch, but Sammy was fun to listen to. I saw Sammy a few years ago. He absolutely killed it. Best concert I've seen in years.

Lived the entire 90s in Sammy's hometown of Fontana. My husband taught in the same district.

One of my all time Van Hagar songs! Love Sammy’s vocals on their albums.

I like Sammy better as a lead vocalist for Van Halen than Dave because his voice has more range and versatility, and his delivery is more killer than Dave's. Rest in peace, Eddie Van Halen.
Thanks, Benji!
Have a great week, Cade.
Thanks Ken you have a great week as well buddy
Montrose- ‘Make It Last’
Tremendous range and power.
Hagar is one of the greats. 👍🏻
I agree!!
Thanks for the upload...I have seen Sammy many times through the years and was never disappointed !!! He has a real knack for keeping things fresh...
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks for listening, Ragnar!
@@kentamplin You're welcome, it is a pleasure. thank you for praising good music and providing us with great content. hugs.
Thanks for the thoughts, Walter!
I also love both iterations of VH - would love for you to touch on the one vocal that has been consistent through both - Michael Anthony’s incredible backing vocals. Amazing, clean, unstrained high voice. Def VH’s signature sound.
Great suggestion!
100% VH would not have had the harmonies, which were so important to their choruses, without Michael, Chickenfoot!
Absolutely !
I know ppl complain they went commercial w Sammy but gosh this is when I LOVED their music!!! Missin Eddie bad. Always hoped they’d make up and get back to their music together
Rock on, Stacey!
I appreciate that, Billy!
Sammy is THE BOMB and I love him now and always!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Rosana!
Thanks for the suggestion.
My favorite van halen song. Huge Hagar fan and I loved his MTV cribs epsiode when he had his property in Cabo!!
Awesome!
I LOVE this song and Sammy's vocal track...what great moment for rock when the 5150 album dropped... RIP Edward ❤️❤️❤️
Gone too soon!
Love this channel and the videos...keep dissecting Van Halen please!
Love Sammy! I’d put him in my top five favourite singers any day! Personally I would love to see an analysis of Dreams. That’s a hard song to sing!!
Awesome! Thank you, Roberto!
Sammy blows Roth away - Roth sounds like my cat when he’s pissed and I don’t change the litter box
😆
what rubbish...so what? You sound like people who like "good singing " ....expressing the bluesy vibe and attitude of early van halen is what mattered ....didnt need pavorotti to sing "like a rolling stone " to be a well conveyed pce of art ....i get what you are saying....but its not a competition ...so comparisons are merely subjective
OMG! I laughed so hard at that! U nailed it perfectly! 😂😂😂
Better singer and nicer guy but the songs, lyrics and mystique took a major step down after DLR left.
I also love your band ‘shout’ and didn’t realise what a great guitarist and front man you are as well . I’m going to buy your albums , I love your music.
Wow! Thank you, Gawain!
Thanks for sharing, Albert!
Great analysis on the great Sammy as a rock singer myself I agree with you about a more rounder sound, but I have to say that when he is singing the verses I don’t really hear that throaty sound, it sounds like more light sounding with a bit of grit.
Thanks for listening, Ben!
Always loved the Van Hagar years.
Me too!
Sammy is Awesome. Such a great voice
I agree, maong!
I think David Lee Roth is a showman but I prefer Sammy's voice, I grew up listening to Sammy sing and it's part of my fond memories!
This dude is such an expert, surprised he’s not a megastar.
Van Halen is my all time favorite band hands down. Both camps
Awesome!
One of my favorite VH songs. Sammy really help them to renew themselves. 🤘🎸🎤🤘🎸🎤🤘🤘
And crazy voice .
Well said!
Very good analysis.👍
I agree, how the heck does Hagar still have a voice??
Not only that, he still sounds as good as ever, and he started around 50 years ago!!!
He's doing something right!
Favorite series!
Glad to hear it!
I saw an interview, where Sammy said, he never really thought he was that good of a singer. I don’t know if he was just being humble? I was like, what??? I wish I sang as bad as SH thinks he does! Always been a fan of Sam & still am. He still sounds great!
Haha! Right?!
I agree, I love both eras of Van Halen. But Sammy is a heck of a singer.
Classic song! Love the Hagar era too
So do I, Tyler!
Excellent analysis. I had no idea all those things were happening. Thank you!
Thanks for listening!
I enjoyed the breakdown of this song and the doubler effect. I was lucky to see VH in 1981 and 1982 and several other tours with Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone. I like the early VH with DLR but when Sammy Hagar joined they went to another level.
Appreciate the thoughts, mark!
Thank you!
Not Sammy's fault. That was Eddie being Eddie and they were a much more diverse band.
I agree.
You got me going now I got to go listen to some Van Halen with Sammy
Sounds like a great idea!
Ken, you mentioned the interesting choice of holding back on the chorus when the verse was an instant assault. I wonder if that was because of the (to Sammy at the time) novelty of having Michael Anthony’s high harmonies to utilise. Always love your videos, Ken. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it, Roddy Jones!
Sammy has been able to maintain his voice into his 70's. Amazing, great analysis.
He's remarkable!
@@kentamplin Agree 💯%
What a range. Beautiful analysis Ken. I really love it. He does his thing and style.
He does!
Thank you for another great video and like I said before, Sam is the real Van Halen for me
Great Job! Saw them in Hampton VA in 1984 when I was in the US Navy...
Awesome!
최고의 보컬리스트 이자 인간적으로 좋은사람 best vocalist.
From south Korea
Rock on!
Sam really is a badass.. he held on to his voice for so long.. did all the wrong techniques, he was amazing.. great analysis Ken..BTW, don't think I'm alone in this thought, these could be much longer and we'd stick with you through them
Did you see Sammy play at the NASCAR All-Star Race in Texas back in June? So much fun!
I'll have to check it out.
Such a bummer caprino vibrato isn’t optimal technique wise cuz it sounds so cool. I love that fast vibrato like Freddie has
Sammy also had a great BGV from Mike Anthony! Awesome Harmonies btw..1986 was a great year!
It was!!
Thanks Ken! Love Sammy! He's a complete freak of nature. He still has a killer range. Andy Johns produced the For Unlawful Carnal Knowlege. Mick Jones produced the 5150 album. Both great albums!
Indeed! Thanks for listening!
Sammy also stated in an interview with EVH, that he found & was more inspired to find more singing range with EVH's guitar playing skills and song writing ability.
Thanks for the info, Marilyn!
I love sammy! One of rock's best lead singers and genuinely great guy. The power of his vocals are unmatched in my eyes. Thanks ken for this awesome video! 👍
My pleasure, Mike!
I think that they made good music with Roth, and they also made good music with Sam. Different, but still really good.
