How To Sing Like Chris Cornell - Soundgarden - Audioslave - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
To me Chris Cornell seemed like a singer born out of his time.
With his singing style, range and distortion, he could have been hugely popular in the early 80s but by missing that time period, he was classified as grunge which I don't think really fit him.
What do you guys think? Do you think the label of grunge fits his music?
Chris was great at high belting and was known for his distortion which he got through compressing his sound.
I'm going to show you a safer way to get to that same place. Check it out as I show you how to get that distortion without having to squeeze off the sound.

Ken and Katie sound fantastic. The science and art of singing is surprisingly complex. You learn to "bark the consonants", to "bark the vowels", to raise or lower your soft palet, to change your expression to "close" a vowel, etc. ...Chris was a gifted singer, with enormous lung capacity. He had it all. Before he died, he was planning a vacation with his beautiful family. Then he texted his wife that he took too much anti-anxiety meds, and he hung himself. I was dumb-struck by his "induced suicide". This was a kick in the gut that left me numb. He had an anti-suicide song (Sunshower, check it out here on RUclips!). Every time I think of Chris' end, I get so heart-sore... People who have graduated from the Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy jump several "levels". There are a variety of surprising "tricks" to improving phrasing. (Like when Adele "pre-hyperventilates" before a grand finale.) All acting is lying. All singing and dancing is lying. You have to give yourself permission to lie. then you have to say "I am a singer". Then sing, and sing, and sing... Years ago I found myself a tourist surrounded by British tourists. I told one, "I half expect these Brits to break out in song." He replied, "They probably would, so long as it's not Mary Poppins." The Brits have a drinking song tradition test, which allows them to keep drinking - if they can still sing. Singing doesn't have the same cache anywhere else. Ken can change that.

Chris was awesome, so much feel! Part of the marble mouth thing that Chris and Eddie shared is neither moved their jaw much when they sang quieter, and that's where it was more pronounced. Chris especially, almost kept his mouth closed. To be honest, I think the grunge label mostly came from being part of the Seattle crowd, and did have elements that were similar (mostly due to environment) to other bands with the label. Let's face it, not many of the big grunge acts actually sounded alike enough to carry a subgenre. Thanks Ken, great job as usual!

Totally loved the grunge era. It was right when I started coming of age. Used to listen to Megadeth, Metallica, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam a ton in 8th grade. Soundgarden's album Badmotorfinger really impressed me, but didn't attempt any songs because I heard Chris later almost lost his voice. However, when Chris died, much later, and I was into studying music on your page I took up Rusty Cage, which I'm sure might as well be impossible to count, and added it to my karaoke repertoire. Unfortunately, when I said Soundgarden, nobody knew what I was talking about. But, man it felt good to sing some of Chris's music.

Seems kind of weird, but the thing in this video that helped me to get that sound was that I saw his tongue positioning as he did the raspy singing.

Thank you, for the vid. You mentioned in here that there's a tickle feeling that you SHOULDN'T feel if you're doing the distortion right. Any tips on what distortion should feel like? I feel like I've built up some good strong compression and I've tried messing with it but it only ever feels like I'm about to cough which is the wrong way to do it. You mentioned "leaning into compression in other videos" but I'm not entirely sure what you mean.

Hey man. I thought that was really ballsy of you to bring that vocal from the room high above the mix, right off the bat. And it sounded really good. Music without autotune touches people on an emotional level, and you know just where to sharpen or flatten the notes in the right places. Just like he would have. Also, really good advice on the fry.

You speak my language, really!!! I mean music history wise and genre. I don't know a lot but what I do know, there are only few people that I can talk to about this stuff. Voice-wise, invaluable info. Thank you! Looking forward to the course! This is one of the styles I would love to be able to do or incorporate to whatever it is that my style will be. And Chris, the world misses you so much! Wish you had found a way to cope! But, I think that Toni will do you justice. What a rendition she gave of Pearl Jam's Black!!!

sounds like what some people call creak/creaking when u do the bedroom voice haha, btw ken´s course is a must to unlock freedom in your voice, experimenting is great and helps too, but having an awesome foundation first that works before you experiment further with your voice, is definetly a superior choice that comes with much more succes

Hey Ken, I'm a 17 year old male and I've just recently started singing a little and I think I sing fine but I don't like how my voice sounds, could that just be cause I'm not used to hearing it on recordings before let me know if you also felt this way starting out.

5 yrs ago we lost Chris Cornell on 18th May 2017 and weirdly it was also 42 yrs to the very day & sadly the same way too that we ( the UK ) lost the great Ian Curtis of Joy Division! of
A few of us spoke to Peter Chris"s brother on Facebook & he said that on a daily basis he goes to text his brother a silly joke & then realises he's no.longer there..incredibly sad indeed 😭😭See got to see a few nice pics of him too from when they were real!y young .
We've lost so.many great musicians..Mark Lanegan's passing was just tragic..first time he'd been truly happy in a while & trying to.improve his healthhe loved living in Ireland and bloody Clovee put him in a coma for over a month.& he wasn't strong enough to fully recover..To Chris..Mark..Layne..to all the artists & ' poets' of my generation ...you'll live on forever ❤

Spot on Ken! Most singers these days have gone the Sam Smith, Bruno Mars type of R&B vocals which really sounds wimpy. They're men trying to sing like girls. I miss the 70s to 90s rock era vocalists such as Styx, Journey, Outfield, REO Speedwagon type of male vocalists who have that strong, rock, manly tone
