Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun - Chris Cornell - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Tutorial
Although Chris Cornell was a great singer with awesome distortion and amazing range, what stood out for me was what an incredible songwriter he was.
When you think of the greatest songwriters in rock, what names come to mind? Let me know in the comments?
Chris wrote the lyrics for “Black Hole Sun” in about 15 minutes and has said he wasn’t sure if the band was going to like it despite the fact that it went on to be the biggest hit of the summer of 1994.
As I dive into his isolated vocals from the track, I’ll explain how to get Chris’ sound using compression and how the track was recorded to create that intimacy.

Many of the Singers sound a little strange without the Music. But not Chris. He was so clean and special.
He was, Jesus Love!
absolutely, so musical!
Ken Tamplin, your thoughts on auto-tune are spot on. Hooray!! I adore singers who aren't trying to impress, but strive to add emotion to a song. Chris' voice is wonderful.
Glad we agree, Debbie!
I saw him in a super small venue
After he left audio slave.
The power went out.
He grabbed his acoustic guitar
And played his now first solo album.
It was magic.
I thought you nailed the vocal at the end.
✌🤙
What a cool experience!
I agree with you so much about auto-tune! I want to hear the cracks of their natural voice, I want to hear that imperfection!!! That is what makes a singer unique, auto-tune has taken that away from so many!!
Chris Cornell had an amazing voice. I wasn't really into the grunge (other than Pearl Jam and a few other songs here and there) but his voice was so fabulous! What a talent he was given. 💜
Not going to lie, your cover is the best. You are in my top three singers of all time!
The circumstances around Cornell's death certainly are very suspicious and I appreciate you bringing it up Ken. Some things are bigger than music
Thanks for watching!
Awake you are mate , oh man , totally agreed ,
Um it more than suspicious. Its murder. I believe we all know that.
Chris always stood out for me in the grunge era, def top class of singers
For sure!
How great was Chris, favourite vocalist of all time, with the greatest band of all time Soundgarden
Thank you for this, loved it
Chris is the example that singing comes from the soul, I saw another video and you said "Chris note" and Jack Black said "when he sang a portal opened" or something similar ... he was a poet, but when he sang his spirit danced...
Thanks for the thoughts, Maria!
Another amazing break down Ken. Chris was a beautiful singer and will be sadly missed.
Couldn't agree more!
What a beautiful voice in more ways than one.
I agree!
I appreciate you bringing up the mystery around his death. I think about this almost every day. I miss you Chris :( I love the breakdowns keep them coming!
A tragic loss, Ivan!
When Chris died I felt so horrible. Then when Bennington died shortly after, I was devastated. It was the two together that really was so unbelievable. So much talent left this earth.
I pray the truth is made known one day.
Tragic losses.
A Day In The Life would be my guess cuz he did a phenomenal cover of it
I find myself sitting and listning to just Chris vocals more than a complete song more and more often...damn that voice that man had
Rock on!
Ken, this was fantastic. You have increased an already high regard for Chris. Although I am a musician, your videos are getting me to listen to music and a whole new way. Thanks for all this and happy new year
Happy New Year, scsdrummer!
I agree. I am finding I can listen to full music tracks and identify when special effects are being added. I think I am beginning to be impressed with singers for different reasons now than in the past.
One of my favorite songs from Soundgarden. Starting to realize that he is indeed a great songwriter and an emotional singer with a unique tone.
He was.
Was listening to Chris’ Songbook live album the other night and thought to myself, “I would love to hear Ken do an analysis of Chris with one of these new isolated vocal vids he’s been doing...” Boom, awesome as always Ken! Thank you for the amazing content!
Glad you enjoyed it, mthebex!
Thanks again Ken. Really good comments on one of my favourite songs to sing with my acoustic guitar and you have addressed some techniques that I've never noticed before. Watching your videos is like being with my music buddies and taking apart songs and analysing them. Being in lockdown in the UK, you have kept my passion alive. Thank you again
Thanks, Michael!
What an eerie quality to these vocals. Haunting and great! Thanks Ken!
Thanks for listening
I was not a big “grunge” fan, but any project Chris Cornell was part of was sure to be a good one.
I agree.
I’m with you on the not being a fan of grunge (all of the great guitar players lost their jobs overnight!!), but yeah, Chris C definitely had a good thing going
At 62, it's too late for me to learn to sing, but I'll learning SO much from you on the recording techniques that were used!
I was never into "Grunge", but Soundgarden was the exception! Chris was a huge reason for that, but the band was super talented. Outshined, the Day I Tried to Live, Rusty Cage, Spoonman...so many great songs! Thanks so much for doing this series Ken! Cool shirt, btw....
It's most certainly not too late. Rock on!
I always felt grunge was stupid (they didn’t even try to write sing and play songs with any effort of the classic rock acts) but also smart simultaneously (it was honest instead of another attention grabbing pose).
As a lover of music but not a musician, I find this really fascinating. Especially in how it adds new dimensions of appreciation for music I know well--or so I thought!
Glad you enjoy it, Mathias!!
Chris Cornell and Jeff Buckley really were two of the greatest male rock singers. I’d also love to hear some Jeff stems.
Only now I'm starting to hear the Grunge Bands. When Chris Cornell died I knew some Hits, but I liked the party that was and still is Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Icon, which is a sadly unknown band. Jimmy Page talking about how talented Chris was then I took note and said that one day I would understand his value. Thanks Ken Tamplin.Another awesome job!
Thanks, William!
Very awesome video, my friend. Thank you for upload.
Thanks for watching!
Ken love the shirt!
Chris was definitely a talent that we aill all miss. I love to listen and sing his songs. His effects are like none other.
A great loss, Hadassah Peace!
Ken! Just yesterday this topic popped into my mind, with Chris and Chester's death. I think the universe and the divine is sending us some signs. Great video btw, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Anyone ever seen a pic of Chester Bennington next to a picture of John podesta? ...just sayin...
@@checkmate8955 So? Maybe the guy was Chester's dad & perhaps not. Does it matter now that he is dead? I think what is important about Bennington is his body of work & the things his very introspective lyrics said about his perception of the human condition. I had the pleasure of meeting him once. He was the real deal- as sweet & humble & thoughtful as you could want. In the face of that, the facts of his parentage mean little.
Thanks Ken! Love your enthusiasm and great way of picking these songs apart and giving credit to the singers, and in this case on of the best rock singers to walk the earth!
Both you and Chris doin what you do best, total professionalism
Keep up the good work
Rock on!
What an amazing talent..both of you :) Best technical commentary of any vocal RUclips channel!!
Thank you!
I love this Isolated Vocals series !!! BTW Ken... We all know you're one of the most underrated singers in history.
Glad you enjoy the series!
Wow!! just discovered this series and couldn't be happier!! Even more impressed with your skill and passion!! Huge eternal thanks!!
Glad you enjoy it!
I think a lot of people don't realize at first that music is a tapestry and that it has it's own color, texture, and breath. Using reverbs and panning along with other effects and techniques are there to keep your brain from becoming bored as we are very good at picking up patterns. It's really just subverting are minds expectations to make things feel fresh, new and interesting.
Thank you.
Also, on the autotune bit, I wanna say that one thing I'm tired of hearing is people say "oh being against autotune is just you being old fashioned." No, it's not old fashioned. Singing is a job, and if something is either doing part of your job or all of your job for you, that means YOU are not doing YOUR job. We apply this logic to almost everything, but when it comes to autotune, a lot of young fans/singers/engineers seem to get very defensive instead of just admitting they're okay with literal laziness. That's the end of my rant lol
Really enjoy that, thanks Ken. What a great artist, rest in peace Chris , God bless his soul
Gone too soon.
I definitely hear Beatles influences, not only in tone, but in where his notes are landing (7th, 9th, 11, #11, 13). Beatles' "Yesterday" did that. But so did "Oh, Darling", with Paul's distorted vocals. Definitely worth listening to. Last thing, "Blackbird" also has vocal double tracked in the chorus. So, this song has a few Beatles references in my mind.
Thoughtful response!
I hear the same. If this song were recorded in Fab Four's Abbey Road, sounds almost the same vocal style.
Once again...great show! You are very engaging with your astute analysis of the human voice. I consider Chris one of the greatest male vocalists of all time. Chris is the Pavarotti/Bjorling of the rock world. A true vocal phenomenon. Have you done an analysis of Tom Jones? Tom is a singing machine and has stood the test of time. Thanks
Great analysis! This was a great song to do such an examination of!
Thank you, Mathew!
@@kentamplinthank you for spelling my name correctly! I don’t know how many times others have not done it right!
As a "real old" head, my first introduction to Chris Cornell was when a Gen X employee of mine said I should check out the Black Hole Sun video because it was so weird and trippy. I did, and just considered it an interesting oddity. Decades later I ended up purchasing "Superunknown" on your and Rick Beato's recommendations, and I found myself in love with Chris' voice, tone and technique. Such a sad loss. RIP.
Thanks for the visit, rock on!
Please do his "Show me how to live" isolated vocals !!
Great suggestion!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy .....or "Outshined" 👌🙏
Was going to comment this, jesus christ pose would be another great one.
Yes Chris was a great song writer, singer and is missed everyday. I admit I wasn't a fan or this song when it came out in 1994. They played it on the radio about every hour. I didn't realize how great he was until Audioslave then backtracked. Burden in my hand is just one of my many favorites Cochise, out of exile, ECT. KATI Cher does a great cover of Show me how to live. Thanks Ken Tamplin
Thanks for watching, Ron!
You have a great voice!
A Day in the Life by the Beatles. I never thought of that before.

@@kentamplin I think there is also a little bit of "Here Comes The Sun"... but Day in the Life was my 1st thought.
Ken, have you heard Chris’ solo song, “When I’m Down,” from Euphoria Morning? Man, that’s a great example of his vocal versatility.
Thanks for the reminder!
One of my all time favorite songs.
I love that song and Two Drink Minimum!!!
Agreed... the guitar solo on it is incredible too

You are so welcome!
Hi Ken Tamplin I hope you have a nice New Year's I just want to wish you a Happy New Years I hope we bring so much joy this year and God bless you Ken Tamplin
Thanks for the visit! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾🎈🧨
My guess for what this song is reminiscent of is stairway to heaven by Led Zeppelin because both songs are similar in the sense that if you ask many people what the lyrics mean you’ll get so many different answers to the question.
I love and respect Chris Cornell.
He was an awesome singer with
an incredible vocal range and excellent pitch. On top of that,
he had great and creative songwriting skills that I love.
He did a lot of great cover songs
that I enjoy listening to. I sang
"Black Hole Sun" at Karaoke a few years ago. I miss him.
RIP Chris Cornell 🙏
So do I, Amanda!
You are spot on about Chris's diversity. His punkish howl was fitting with the Seattle club scene when they started, but he could not contain those amazing , bellowing Classic Rock tones that were roaring to erupt to the skies. He could have been in a Zeppelin style kick ass hard rock band, or let loose the banshee roar amidst howling Sabbath riffs. Soundgarden mined and combined all those excellent elements with awesome aplomb. The psychedelic Beatles melodies sweeten the melodic doom laden grunge here to super effect. Loved hearing the isolated vocals and analysis to a song thats been part of my life since '94. This was bloody brilliant! Thanks, and happy new year to ya.👍🤘
Happy new year!
Chris was a absolutely incredible vocalist and lyricist i put him up there with Freddy Mercury. One of my all time favorite Soundgarden songs.
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
Chris was an old soul. When he was singing especially recording I don’t believe he had much thought of “how do I want this to sound”. He just sang from his soul and that’s why his vocals seem so thought out when they really are from his deep thought and emotion for the lyrics.
Thanks Karla!
Ken is really looks like you love what you do! Keep it up brother. Very insightful analysis!
I sure do!
Such a shame he is no longer with us. Definitely one of the best vocalist I've heard in ages - at least for my tastes.
Love the isolated vox KTVA has been presenting. BTW - would love to hear Dave Pack's isolated vox on Ambrosia's "How Much I Feel" sometime.
Thanks for listening!
Wonderful Ken thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, Chris was amazing. Nice breakdown and tutorial. I love how excited you get ❤. Like a kid opening a Christmas present. Bravo Maestro 👏
Glad you enjoyed!
Woah! You got me curious on the Cornell death thing, I must look into this. Thanks! Also, nice shirt!
Fool On the Hill 🤘
RIP King Cornell
Thanks for this vid, Ken - and also for touching on the controversial circumstances surrounding his death.
I cannot be 100% convinced that he 'killed himself'.
I was not aware of all those subtle techniques- he wove in and out of this song! AMAZING!! Thanks Ken!!
My pleasure, Gina!
Chris is what brought me into the Seattle sound. Just icon level. I saw Soundgarden 4 times. Mind-blowing! I also saw Chris on the Euphoria Morning Tour 3 times. Hugely underrated album. He was such a good songwriter and composer. Such a good sense of chords and song structure. True talent. He and Layne just had something different than everyone else at the time. I don't know if you like Queens of The Stone Age. But I also love Josh Homme crooning in a Dean Martin vibe over gritty and sludgy guitars.
Thanks for the thoughts! Rock on!
Exceptional “Tone”, pitch perfect 🤩- Love it!!
Thanks for the visit. Rock on!
Would absolutely LOVE to see you do one of these for Dolores O’Riordan.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Zombie?
Eh zombie is too obvious , just another “power” example. Dreams , when ur gone, track 6 on rhe linger lp (I forget title haha .) one that she showcases the “fluttering “ and “neo-Celtic” technique she showcased. They were also adept and regular users of “doo doo doo’s” and “ahh ahh ahh’s” which actually speaks to her/their talent as musicians b/c that can quickly become overdone, corny, hokey, 50’s doowap…. Gotta know when to use it and have a light hand when ya do.
Happy New Year to You and Yours Ken!!.. Excellent video I've been waiting for this one!💯
Happy new year!
This is such an amazing analysis and discussion. Thank you so much. Really enjoyed when you break down there vocal techniques and even their mistakes
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of the great singer/songwriters of all time. Warren Huart did a breakdown of all the tracks and recording of Blackhole Sun with the producer Michael Beinhorn. Chris recorded the vocals in the studio by himself. Cool stuff. It's on RUclips if any Chris fans are interested.
I'll have to check that out, Scott!
Wow, a great to way start 2021! Thank you so much for that great choice, Ken!

Awesome! Really happy to hear that! Keep it up!
Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾🎈🧨
Thanks for this video Ken! You always have awesome insight on vocalists that provide a great perspective. And I agree about how auto-tune etc take away so much of a singer’s personality
Rock on!
You make these so fun Ken. I truly enjoy your channel man!
I appreciate that!
Love this series - with the production asides and vocal demos. What could be better.
Happy to hear that, Jake!
I totally agree with you on the point of listening to some isolated vocals is not very spectacular but his is over the top. I could listen to just this isolated version over and over.
Also on the pitch and tone, George Michael did that also, 1 of my favorite singers, Chris is right there with him. Loved, Loved, Loved this vocals episode.
I could too!
I never truly appreciated Cornell's vocals until now. His voice is incredible! He was a great loss to the industry. :(
Rock on!
I was in my teens when Badmotorfinger came out. Had it on cassette and for several days I didn't get past Mind Riot, Outshined, and Jesus Christ Pose. Then Room a Thousand Years Wide came on. Didn't listen to anything else for several days. I don't know that I've ever heard another song that opens with that much energy straight out of the gate. His opening scream made me want to jump out of my seat. Not sure on the meaning definitely seems dark but I just love the energy. Completely agree that Chris could have fronted a metal band!! Great as always Ken! Thanks
These videos are much appreciated thank you 🙏
My pleasure!
This is one of the best so far, as was Chris.
Thanks for the visit. Rock on!
Best and coolest Series ever🤘
Glad you enjoy it!
Happy New Year Ken , I hope you keep posting stuff like this ...
More to come! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾🎈🧨
Thank you so much for mentioning the suspicious circumstances around Chris' and Chester's deaths. They went against very serious shadow groups and sadly paid the price, but we should honor their sacrifice and continue their fight. God bless. ❤️
Continue the fight!
Trump is trying. Most ppl don't know he is targeting sex trafficking. Its a big part of why he built the wall. Also no coincidence that Epstein, Maxwell, nygard, brunell, Bronfman, Raniere and Mack who have been operating for decades in some instances have been untested since trump came to office. Trafficking is such a huge industry that makes a lot of ppl a lot of money and it's why they hate Trump so much. He's costing them billions probably and cutting their supply chains. He also signed an executive order right at the start of his presidency to seize the assets of anyone involved in human trafficking. With el chapo being arrested, maybe Mexico did pay for the wall after all!
Ever watch him live a lot he's got great control with the mic using it as a weapon to have insane sustain. Great singer, if you wanna learn how to sing master his style you'll sing for years.
Every time he goes way up to get those notes, key is to not push air or you will die lol.
I think he mastered to make him so iconic was his transitonal inbetween his registers or *styles* its flawless almost every time.
Rock on!
Enjoy watching your posts, mostly because I wish I could sing well. Love Chris Cornell’s voice. Being the same age as these artists, knowing some, and living in the heart of “grunge land” at the time it all emerged was a memorable experience. On a side note, having been a death investigator for 16 years…there are a lot of case files I would be interested in viewing in their entirety. Take care.
Rock on!
Happy New Year, Ken! Great video and great voice! Your voice sounds amazing! ☺️🎤🎶

Thank you! You too!
@@kentamplin Your welcome! ☺️ Thanks! ☺️

Fantastic song.
Agreed!
I always hear a lot of hate towards autotune but what I realised lately is that a lot of producers that aren’t singers use it. I would argue that when you don’t have a vocalist, make electronic music and your talent lies somewhere else than singing, autotune can actually work perfectly. A lot of artists nowadays work from home and completely produce songs on their own. What they want you to care about is the songwriting and the production quality not how much character is in their vocals.
If you’re a professional singer the only thing you should use autotune for is when you use it very sparingly in electronic music for mixing purposes so that the harmonic overtones won’t interfere with the perfect pitch of the sound design.
💯 Excellent as always, Ken.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this ken...

@@kentamplin Any chance you could review and react to Biffy Clyro? Would love to hear you cover "Living is a problem". Just an idea, loving the isolated vocals series btw
I think what lumped him in with the Grunge movement was his album he did with Temple of the Dog. Just my opinion. That and his music came out in that era.
Chris Cornell was awesome with soundgarden Ken black hole sun I love the song it rocks Ken one of my favorites love to hear soundgarden sing live to rise from the avengers that song rocks but I love his vocals he was awesome live he had an awesome range loved his techniques screaming this dude was serious in his vocal pipes he was awesome had great distortion but he had great songs as well a lot of great songs that I loved he is an icon a legend in rock music he will be remembered by me my mom loves him to Ken he had awesome techniques ken👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

The "no one signs like you anymore"-line is truly sad, because now it's a "motto" we used to say about Chris, but (allegedly) he wrote it about Kurt Cobain! Anyway i recommend "The day i tried to live" or any song from his Euphoria morning - these are not from this planet!
Rock on!
Thank you for bringing up Euphoria Morning. HUGELY underrated. He was such a brilliant writer. It didn't get its due because people wanted Soundgarden back so badly. I remember seeing that tour three times. People in the crowd kept screaming at him to do Soundgarden stuff. He did it, but you could tell it hurt him. He was very gracious about it. Euphoria Morning was so well written. It should have elevated him even further. He worked hard on it and had high expectations for it. Some of the best crafted songs out there. I still think whoever owns the rights now, should rerelease it. It should be up there with Paul Simon and Phil Collins stuff. It's that well done and timeless.
I’d love to hear a breakdown of the song “She Talks To Angels” by The Black Crowes.
Wow I never really appreciated his singing until I watched this great job
Glad you enjoyed it, bjeffers131!
Ken as usual I learned so much and really enjoyed myself with this video. Chris Cornell has been a huge influence on my life. But it was so interesting to hear from an expert like yourself that he was so technically great. To me that's a big deal because I've heard you critique Freddie Mercury for example and you found a few things about his voice that was not exactly considered great technique yet he was just incredibly great performer. It made me appreciate how truly incredible a singer Chris Cornell was that you really didn't have any negative critique of him at all. :-)
Rock on! 😊
A great Singer. Another interesting breakdown. But amazing what effects can do.
