Seeing as how everyone reacting to Chris Cornell is hell bent on not listening to the studio tracks... ever... I'm not sure she will here him in his prime.
michael fadian there's good old live recordings all over. It more seems they get overlooked which is sad because he had earlier songs that showed his full range, not just one or two parts
The coolest part of this was the fact that this was his voice PAST his prime. He admitted his voice diminished due to smoking and heavy drinking at one point in his life. From the beginning of Soundgarden until about 1999 his voice was at the peak. His worst point was during his time with Audioslave, mostly during live performances, but afterwards when he stopped drinking his voice recovered and it just got better over time.
His prime was more 1988 to 1995. Even by 1996 he was having major issues with his voice his range had diminished quite a bit by 1996 and he was also having alot of trouble staying on key and in tune . His voice was also very shaky and warbly in 1996. There are many performances from the last 3 months where his voice is very damaged. He also had to push and strain to hit the upper range in 1996. The live on I5 album is an example of how tattered his voice was in 1996. The trouble actually started in August of 1994. He blew his voice out and soundgarden had to cancel the rest of the US tour and the entire 94 European tour Cornell was told by a doctor that he had severely stained his vocal chords and was told to not tour for a whole year and he took that advice and it worked for a brief period of time. In August of 95 soudgarden returned to performing and re booked their canceled 94 Euro tour and Cornells voice was absolutely mind blowing. He was back to the Cornell of 1991 and gave some of his strongest live performances if his career but when the band returned to performing in 96 his range had diminished alot . During the layoff between the 95 euro tour and the summer of 1996 Cornell was drinking Heavily and alot of drugs which continued when Soundgarden hit the road in July 96 and toured for the next 6 months between the months of touring and hard partying Cornells voice declined rapidly and by the first of December was a complete mess. It's a shame they waited until the December shows to record concerts for a live album. Had they recorded the shows from November 7 to November 20th they would have captured Chirs in much better voice. They had a 3 week break between the 96 Euro tour and the start of the US tour and Chirs started off the US tour in much better voice then he had been for most of the Euro tour . He sounded quite good during September 96 show particularly the shows in England. They recorded live and Loud for MTV in September and Chris was in fantastic voice that day . limo wreck has him in top form but for the October shows chirs was having major difficulties. He still had lots of range and power but his voice was cracking terrible on the highs and screams and he had trouble staying om key but after a 3 week break he came back sounding very strong for the first 2 weeks of the US tour. Denver , the Chicago shows Toronto and Fairfax were all great and easily his best shows of the US tour and better than the October 96 shows . I really wish they have recorded those shows instead. The deterioration of Cornells voice during the last week of November was quite startling . The shows from November 7 to 20th were not what I would consider peak Cornell but they were as close as he got to his peak then at any other point in 96. However there are some individual song performances from Decmebet 96 that are quite fantastic . There may not be a single show from December where Cornell sounds good the whole show but you do get a song here and there where he nails it. I f I had to pick the best vocal show from December it would be Sacramento which is incorrectly labeled as Oakland . It has killer vocals on hands all over and slaves and bulldozers. Slaves and bulldozers had an immense vocal performance and why they did not use that version on the live record instead of the Version from Oakland where Chirs can't hit the highs on the Chorus and his voice breaks. His prime definitely ended in September of 95
@@adamwatson6916 well said, the canceled tour in 94 was the beginning of his vocal issues but at the same time it’s impressive how it seemed like around 2015 he was nailing stuff like beyond the weel again which is something I thought wouldn’t happen again

@@kiwi84ryan His vocal chords were definitely damaged from that tour which is why he changed the way he sang later on. The thing is though his voice still sounded VERY similar on Down On The Upside and even Euphoria Mourning. You could really here where his voice had strain during the Audioslave touring days where he was drinking more heavily. Cornell had even spoken about it in interviews before.

This the greatest vocal performance on a rock song in my opinion. It's sweet and distorted throughout.

He had a talent for songwriting, and his lyrics are pure poetry coupling that into his range and vocal timbre that surpassed several octaves, Cornell was unique in everything he did and his art touched so many, may he rest in peace CHRIS!!!

@@barbabietola I'd say that comparing Cornell and Staley is like comparing apples and oranges. Cornell might be the more technically gifted singer, but Layne had unmatched, unique character to his voice.

Great video. It is crazy to think that Chris would perform 2.5 to 3 hours long sometimes. I went to a Soundgarden show and his vocals punched through for 3 hours.

You nailed what I was thinking... Say Hello 2 Heaven! That song to me is Chris Cornell at his best. This song (Black Rain) is an impressive vocal performance for sure, but his voice on Say Hello 2 Heaven has so much more soul and feel.
Hey Beth. Chris never really sang badly. His voice was very strained during Audioslave, but came back when Soundgarden reunited and he was healthier. His prime was ‘91 to about ‘99 after his first solo record. If you’ve been impressed by the videos seen so far, to witness Chris in the early ‘90s will blow your mind. I could name every song I know for an example, but I’ll give three:

Loud Love was in 1989 and Hunger Striker was in 1990. That was before 1991 dude and he sounded out of this world.
Dan Maler I agree. Hunger Strike was late ‘90, the fall that year. His voice already sounded a little different than on Loud Love. It’s like he was still fine tuning his instrument. Maybe it was living with Andy and recording some music with him. Maybe it was the moustache. Lol

Performance was not early Soundgarden, but the song is early. I remember hearing this around ‘89-90.

Ken Dooley it’s an outtake from Badmotorfinger that wasn’t released u til like 2010, so that seems unlikely.

When I turned on your video and Chris Cornell's shrieking voice came in overtop of that muck-ridden guitar sound I went immediately back to the late-80's early 90's. His voice is like an attacking hawk descending quickly down your spine. You laid out the technical aspects of how he did this well.

@@JonathanKippers his live vocals are more nasal to protect his voice live. Considering he's doing three projects at a time, I'm fine with that. Chris is a great rock vocalist but I find Myles' cleaner vocals lend itself to more genres of rock and compliment the guitar a bit nicer than Cornell's voice. His vibrato lines nicely with that twang of both rock and acoustic guitars. Cornell's voice mixes nice with the distortion.
As for writing, that's entirely subjective. I connect more with Myles' writing than Chris', but that doesn't take away from Cornell's lyrical ability.

I saw Soundgarden for their louder than love tour. 20 feet away from the stage his voice was blowing our hair back, you could actually hear him over top of the PA system.

Black Rain, yes. One of my favorites. You have to listen the studio version. His voice from his 26’s and his 46’s were mixed.

I have to say that braid you're rockin' is a heartbreaker. As for the music, no matter how much I learn about the different techniques there are for singing, Cornell's voice is one that blows me away every single time. From his range to his stamina, all the way to his ability to truly express whatever he's singing about. Of course, he's not the only one who could do that, but I would argue one of the world's best.
This was the first TV appearance of Soundgarden in 13 years, appearing on Conan in 2010.

So, fun fact this is a later version of Chris Cornell because this is after Soundgardens reunion (whenever avengers happened because they did a track for that movie), and this song is a song written in the 2010s.
This song was written around ‘89-90.
@@kendooley8240 While it was written for their album Badmotorfinger and a product of those recording sessions, it was only released in 2010 on their compilation album Telephantasm. So in a manner, Chris Cornell is performing a song from his younger days with his older, more mature voice.

This was a song that was recorded in 1991 and they touched it up in 2010. He added some vocal overdubs in 2010 but 90 percent of the vocals were recorded in 1991 when his voice was just other worldly. This performance is great but his original vocal from 1991 was just mind blowing. He is using alot more head voice on this one where as on the original the vocal had alot more chest voice and was a much thicker coarser vocal but you can tell when you listen to the original that he was doing alot of damage.
It is about 20 years late to be an 'early example of Chris Cornell' but a great example of what he could do, all the same. Thanks for the video.

Best tone, control, pitch, power...
only thing he REALLY lost (barely) in his later years was his strength in higher register vibrato.
The prime of his vocals is like talking about Michael Jordan 89-93 versus 96-98. He learned how to use all his offensive weapons to perfection in the later years but not all of them were as deadly sharp. There’s a mastery of subtle technique and precision over explosive, unmatched power/ability. It’s all awesome to me either way.

Interesting what you were saying about the relaxed way Chris used to cruise through the seemingly impossible. I totally agree, that gave him his control & ability to keep singing so well with such range as long as he did. Vedder on the other hand who pours everything into his performances and has done for 30 years has totally wrecked his voice & is no longer able to get anywhere near his early performances. Not that they're comparable as singers, they're not, but that energy you mention is what's really noticeable. Chris was trained & new his craft so well to aid his huge talent. Ed is just a power house of emotion as a person and you couldn't keep him calm & controlled if you tried, even at the expense of his longevity. People are amazing! Great channel, great insights.

Late to the commentary, but, this song, despite being very old, was recorded in this live around 2010 or so, I think. So... It's amazing Old Chris hitting all those notes the amazing Young Chris could hit.

Sweet Euphoria from his first solo album Euphoria Mourning is basically a live track and a great example of his power with just an acoustic guitar and showcases the soul in his voice which I always appreciated more than how high he could sing

LOL this is Chris, whos almost 50 hitting incredible notes. He was in his prime during the badmotorfinger.temple of the dog era. Before 91 his voice was great but so powerful and untamed. From superunknown on his voice was just not what it was before. Still great but it was changing. His live performances were hit and miss. Some of rocks greatest singers had to go through voice changes. Robert Plant, to me, was the best rock belter of all time from 68-71. Wrecked his voice.
@@rickchyczewski576 do you think? I never really thought I heard Plant degrade really at all. I'll admit to not sitting and listening to a lot of the late 60's live stuff. It was always mentioned that Chris did not take care of his voice in the least. Smoking until the mid to late naughts, he wouldn't warm up really, etc.
We never really heard Layne Staley change and have to adapt to a different voice, wonder how that would have turned out.
Go check out the dude from the band Steelheart and his voice and how it aged... Or Tony Harnell from the band TNT. Another voice I've just been reminded of is Marc Torien(sp?) from the band Bullet Boys, wonder how he handled getting older. Just thinking out loud now. :)
@@ianmason2003 if you listen to Zeppelin and their bootlegs you will hear it. Plant was one of the best if not the best. The rumor was he degraded until he had surgery. A lot of physical graphitti features plant with a raspy voice that is pretty bad. A lot of that album was recorded much earlier. The key with plant for those that are not crazy fans is the song over the hills and far away. He nailed that song live. Going into 72 he could no longer do it. His voice was so bad during some 72,73 shows, fans should have been refunded. Again he kept pushing and making it worse. He did retrain his voice and what he used at the end of the 70s and during his solo work was very beautiful. Just not greatest of all time.

A great early example of Chris’ vocal range in my opinion would be when he performed the song “Beyond the Wheel” at their Germany 1990 show.
