Great explanation of Chris’ style dude, was initially disappointed when I saw you’d done a reaction video but kudos for doing it in a way that is actually observational and informative

Thank you for doing what your doing...it is so freaking awesome!!!
Thanks man. What gets me is the fact that he made this song, his expression is so extreme you that you loathe it, but at the same time you cannot look away. Enchanting.
The 1990 performance is not even his best. From 1992-94 Cornell managed to really round out the upper notes and it almost did not sound like pure head voice. The 1993 Sturgis performance is the definitive live performance of Beyond the Wheel.
Ultramega OK came out Halloween 1988 on Southern California's SST Records (Black Flag's label). It was Soundgarden's first true full-length record, and second major release (Screaming Life EP, followed by FOPP came out in '87 on Sub Pop). UMOK was remixed and remastered for rerelease in 2017 on Sub Pop. Cool vocal video! Well done, and highly interesting.
Oh yeah, and maybe review his james bond song You know my name. His voice on that song maybe a transition between his young and old singing style.. cmiiw
Excellent analysis. Interesting to note how all of the clean notes when he is younger are on closed vowels, since singing with grit through a smaller passage is more difficult and risky in a live performance unless you're placing it really forward. Glad I found this channel!
A lot of magic goes into knowing how to push from your diaphragm, relax your throat, control the shape of your mouth cavity, etc. I had to go to college studying classical trumpet to do that. I've always had a ton of respect for people with natural talent who just do it. You can play or sing every right note exactly and we know that doesn't mean anything, there's more to it than that. Even when I thought I knew that, it took me longer to understand. That's the difference between someone like me and someone like Chris Cornell or anyone else we all love that had true gifts.
You’re so cool man! I love your channel. I love to sing, but you, man! You took it that extra step and made your own channel. And it’s so awesome, like I actually understand what your saying. I’m just like, “Woah!” Please, keep posting! Don’t stop. You go so in depth with rock musicians. And it’s crazy how you just fit any genre! I learned head voice and understand more because of you! Been singing chest for so long. Thank you, Chris Liepe, thank you! ❤❤❤❤
The thing that most singers and vocal teachers get wrong is he’s singing with a lot more chest than head voice or falsetto that’s why his voice was so much thicker and masculine sounding then say The hair metal singers for example.
Chris is a phenomenon, a freak of nature in the best way. The guy in this vid made my ears bleed though with the dying cat squeal in between chris' performance. I sure hope we get the vocals for the last soundgarden album from his insane widow
Same here! (Dallas) This song was amazing and I got chills- you’re right that he was on point. Honestly I went for NIN but Chris/Soundgarden blew them out of the water. Fn amazing experience.
Make a video of Mike Patton singing styles or hes work with Faith No More from their angel dust or king for a day or album of the year he has some amazing vocals versatile styles :)
Not sure what you mean really are you talking live or studio, maybe you need to watch some soundgarden superunknown to actually see the vocal chain used, its a long line of analogue gear, even live, making records is an art and only adds value to an already great tone, the recording of the voice is an art I understand with 30 plus years exp. If you mean raw, records are not made like that or speakers would be popping all over town esp drums, the snare and human voice fight for weight in a mix too :) listen to superunknown on headphones and notice Chris and matts snare floating in a huge compressed centre field, the kepplinger snare made from a pipe that goes in the ground :) yum
@@Bcwilderness Superunknown is my all-time favorite album by miles and miles from any other record on earth! One of the very best headphone albums too, and the vocal production as well as the singing continues to inspire me daily.... maybe hourly haha :) I love the saturation, the placements, the doubling, ...all of it. Truly a unique work of art!
The 2010 Nude Dragons version is probably the best of his older voice. The 1990 one was their last song after a tough set. I heard that as he aged, he learned how to protect his voice by refining his belting technique.
Hey Chris, I would like to thank you for your videos because they're helping me a lot understanding how to use my voice properly. I always wondered what technique Cornell used for this type of songs, I've always been able to hit those notes in falsetto but of course it was not as powerful as him and I didn't understand what was the difference. Could you try to analize Medicine Man by Pantera, please? It's unbelievable to me how someone who can go so low with his voice can hit such high notes in a Rob Halford way. Also, I've heard once that Michael Starr (Steel Panther's singer) couldn't hit really high notes until Rob Halford himself showed him the proper technique and it all clicked
Could you please do Layne Staley. Always read how the fans in Seattle, back in the day thought Chris and Layne were both awesome and could "peel the paint off the walls" they both were that good. Any of the song from live at the Moore Theater performance.....
😮😲😱 People say to me... 'If Chris Cornell is your favorite singer you should cover some of his songs.' Ummmm No! I imagine that if God ever had the need to sing he would sound just like this God of the Rock Mic! 🎤🔥 R.I.P.
Hi Chris, really digging your channel and your break down of some of Chris Cornell’s techniques. Could you please do one on Jay Buchanan from Rival Sons.
Ultramega OK, their debut full length record, wasn’t originally a Sub Pop release. It was their first, and only record for SST (Greg Ginn of Black Flag). Fast forward to 2018; the band acquired the master tapes, hired Jack Endino to do a proper remastered, and had Sub Pop release it. Also, the first video you reacted to was from 1990, not 91.
I have never heard this song until tonight when I searched “chris Cornell no shirt”. And there was a war in my brain while watching. Can Chris Liepe help me sing like this? VS stay on your feet girl, don’t fall over. Chris Cornell is so unbelievably hot. I love you for helping me reach for these heights.
Is he not constantly in a mix of chest and head voice with some grit to it? Obviously he's got plenty of range through his chest, but all his highs are basically a full voiced falsetto. Are they not? Stitches seamlessly, adds a ton of grit, has the breath to control it as if it were a full chest voice.
@@cornelloverfloater4231 yeah definitely, ✋. Dont wanna sound gay, but he was also one of those very talent and very good looking guys too, you know. I'll give some credit to Cobain, sure, but Cornell takes the lead. Plus Cobain wasnt nearly as talented as Cornell.
@apollo11bb oh definitely! & the stuff you said about him being way more talented is a nobrainer & being a fan of kurt, eddy and layne as well! I stand with you in 100% agreement with that statement of yours! Cheers my dude. RiP CC
How can a real talent like you fly under the radar when whiny people are flourishing. Your doing good work and this was a great discussion on one of my favorite singers. As a long time guitarist I love this shit keep up the good work
This is the first time I ever heard someone break down his singing technique like this, and for the first time I realise he is, actually, playing by the same rules as all of us, and not some kind of super human freak! An incredible singer.
Mike Patton has a career that begins in the late 80's with Mr. Bungle, up to today in front of an orchestra, before you get to Faith No More in the middle of it. He would fill several videos worth of lessons.
Great video Chris. I have to say: I'm the biggest Soundgarden fan. I have every one of their studio albums, including Telephantasm just for the track 'Black Rain', and the only Temple of The Dog album. That being said, I'll be the first to admit what I think is the obvious: Chris's voice wore out as the 90's moved on. You could already tell during some live performances during 1994 and 1995 when they were at their biggest with their release of 'Superunknown', and it was patently obvious for those with an ear for music in 1996 when 'Down On The Upside' came out. See Soundgarden's performance of 'Pretty Noose' on SNL 1996. He does a great job, but you can hear and somewhat see him struggle to match the sound he had on the record. After the reformation of the band, I was blown away to hear that Chris could once again hit some (not all) of his old high notes. I was so impressed that I didn't care that he struggled. You can hear him struggle, and you can hear that he can't put the grunt or "dying cat" in his voice at the high notes anymore night in and night out. He holds back and substitutes lower octaves or occasionally different notes in places to preserve his voice and avoid hurting himself. It seems like he "rehabbed" his voice to a point where he could functionally perform songs like 'Beyond The Wheel', 'Hands All Over' or 'Hunger Strike', which amazed me and excited me for the new record, since other great vocalists who could formerly reach higher notes had to lower the tunings of their songs to perform them live, or omit them completely because father time and years of on stage punishment caught up with them (Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin during their 'Celebration Day' concert in London in 2007) . I even saw Chris perform 'Jesus Christ Pose' in 2012, which you can find on RUclips, and although he worked hard, that was an awful performance because he strained so hard and couldn't hit the notes. His vocal cords weren't what they were twenty years earlier after decades of night in and night out touring, recording and practicing. He was capable of some great stuff back in the 80's and 90's, and I'd say its just short of a miracle that he was able to pull off what he did during Soundgarden's reformation. But I think it's important to point out what singing at the top of your vocal range can do to you night after night for years. Look at Mark Slaughter. Slaughter was a good band and the song 'Fly To The Angels' was great, partly because of the guitars, but also largely because of Mark's vocals. But what happened later after extensive performing? He blew his voice out, and even though he still performs today and outlived Chris Cornell (R.I.P. Chis, I really miss you being in the music world, and your family misses you too), Mark simply cannot, and should not do that song anymore. You can hear him compensate and struggle while performing it in the year 2000: /watch?v=et0CJSAfpuc. It's still a great performance, but you can hear where it's going. Recent live performances are un-listenable. Anyway, great video. I think you could have found a better live performance of Soundgarden's 'Beyond The Wheel' during the 90's to use. The one you picked from his set in Germany was awful. The whole show the crowd was dead and didn't move or make any noise (because it's in Germany during the 1990's) and it was the very last song in their set, so Chris was tired, out of breath and had already worn his voice out. In the right light you can see his skin looks flushed or even purple at times while he's performing. Two of the last three songs in their set are the hardest ones on your vocal cords: 'I Awake' and 'Beyond The Wheel'. The only one harder than those that spring to mind immediately is 'Jesus Christ Pose'. A tape of 'Beyond The Wheel' used in a 1990 video package when they hired bassist Jason Everman was absolutely fantastic, and I'd love to see it in its entirety, but I've yet to find it. Watch the interview and you'll notice it at 2:29: /watch?v=orDDfZCPGmI It's unbelievably good. I'd love to see a video tutorials from various vocal coaches out there about how to avoid killing the high end of your vocal range as you get older, or tips on how to hang onto it for as long as possible for any future Chris Cornells, Mark Slaughters or Robert Plants out there?
I saw u mention Jesus Christ pose...2017 had some of the best performances of that song ever...and mean ever...Cornell was actively trying to get his abilities to what they were in his younger days and honestly...Chris in his prime went of key a lot and hardly ever did later on...but from 2010 up he was getting better and better for the most part...I think it's a fort Myers performance in 2017 on RUclips you can find a great shot version that he hits every single note in it and does amazing
honestly, beyond the wheel is the perfect one to start with, even though it's high, because its thin mix. It's way easier to sing that stuff like Burden In My Hand which is more of a chesty middle mix.
Can we all agree, Chris Cornell is the greatest singer ever? I can sing some, I do for practice; I do throat singing; beyond the wheel is my go to for what I strive for... I've seen him multiple times; I saw him do a duet with Maynard
4- solista.

Im still not comprehending how to get that "throaty" undertone (idk if anyone understands what im going for here but the "breaks" within his rasp are farther apart than fry itself which has a faster "rate" of break, like static). My grit always has that thin fry overtone. How do i get that sound? Not the tone. But that distortion itself? I can hit it flawlessly in falsetto but as soon as i go from chest towards head, suddenly the familiarity i had with the feel doesnt apply anymore because its almost like that particular part that i was using isnt accessible in that positioning.

Cool vocal video! Well done, and highly interesting.
As a big fan of chris, I love this video!! Thank to share this! I hope you'll cover beyond the wheel too.
No one sings like you anymore chris.
This was really fun. Nice job, Chris!
That Chris Cornell and Soundgarden are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame seems like the greatest injustice in this world to me.
Good breakdown of his techniques and why all anyone will ever be able to do is TRY to sing like him.
Right on! Yes!!
Audioslave's performance on top of the Ed Sullivan theater is also really goddamn good. Not as much high stuff but he sounds like a goddamn banshee.
Love this!!
That was my favorite Chris Cornell performance. I’m sure there are better ones but that was so tight for a live show!
Audioslave, to me, was the perfect band. I LOVED everything they wrote. Chris was a LEGEND!
Really great insights. Thank you.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
You're so welcome!
The thing that most singers and vocal teachers get wrong is he’s singing with a lot more chest than head voice or falsetto that’s why his voice was so much thicker and masculine sounding then say The hair metal singers for example.
Soundgarden was my favorite band in high school. Just kick ass
My favorite band of all time... and favorite vocalist hands down :)
Absolute ly loved this
I’m gobsmacked. He’s a generational talent. Singers like this only come along every 50 years or so.
You remind me of a clerk at my local dispensary, great guy!
Soundgarden circa 1990= TOTAL FUCKING GODHEAD 🖤🤘🏻
Chris is a phenomenon, a freak of nature in the best way. The guy in this vid made my ears bleed though with the dying cat squeal in between chris' performance. I sure hope we get the vocals for the last soundgarden album from his insane widow
ya, i hope we can hear that stuff too!
@@chrisliepe 😆
I saw Soundgarden open for NIN in I think 2016 or somewhere around there. They sounded incredible. Chris was on point
Same here! (Dallas) This song was amazing and I got chills- you’re right that he was on point. Honestly I went for NIN but Chris/Soundgarden blew them out of the water. Fn amazing experience.
FYI just checked my ticket- it was 2014.
Usually such videos give only a reaction. And finally now I see useful information. Thanks
Except when you are Chris Cornell and the live is more perfect than the album version....
On every live performance I’ve watched. So much better than the album.
Make a video of Mike Patton singing styles or hes work with Faith No More from their angel dust or king for a day or album of the year he has some amazing vocals versatile styles :)
Omg, I STILL listen to songs from Angel Dust nearly every day. That album is a masterpiece!!
um you can sound like him but not sing like hime, theres the matter of a tormented soul, pure art
plus a good fet compressor and right mic help the tone too
DEAD ON with this comment!!
@@HeidiCFranks Brad Delp would be KILLER
One of my 3 fav singers, Layne, Patton, and Cornell.
Chris was a FORCE to be reckoned with! Dude was 6'3" and a voice 5 times taller.........R.I.P. Chris.........
@@monicajean37 wow was he that tall?
@@thyme4coffee203 yep, He was a tall very handsome man lol
Funny how 2 years later I watch this again haha. Miss Cornell and that style.
Love your humility Chris💜💜 great stuff
Thank you! 😊

Magical
Could you please do Layne Staley. Always read how the fans in Seattle, back in the day thought Chris and Layne were both awesome and could "peel the paint off the walls" they both were that good. Any of the song from live at the Moore Theater performance.....
Got a LOT of requests for Layne Staley. Am going to get on this VERY soon :) Glad there's a lot of interest!
Glad to hear there's a lot of interest....looking forward to it...thanks.
😮😲😱
People say to me... 'If Chris Cornell is your favorite singer you should cover some of his songs.' Ummmm No!
I imagine that if God ever had the need to sing he would sound just like this God of the Rock Mic! 🎤🔥
R.I.P.
You could sing for Soundgarden dude :) Great video :)
Finally someone did it, rip Chris
you might have picked the best reaction video song ever. hahhaa. I hate reaction videos...but this I had to check out. salute Chris.
Your such a boss to teach this.
Hi Chris, really digging your channel and your break down of some of Chris Cornell’s techniques.
Could you please do one on Jay Buchanan from Rival Sons.
I really like Rival Sons, ya Jay would be a GREAT one to do! I'll add it to the list!
Seriously, this is a good series please keep it up. Maybe some Scott weiland next time or more cornell
Shut the fuck up and just enjoy the music
Thank you, very mach!
You’re so welcome!!!
Yep!
How does Chris sing that D5 so relaxed and calm can I have the secret
see any of my mixed voice videos!
Chris was the Bomb
I love Staley, but the high notes and the power in Cornells voice... I dont think that Layne Staley could do that.
apollo11bb I absolutely love layne but noone and I mean noone could do it like Chris! RiP Chris, Layne, Kurt & Scott
@@cornelloverfloater4231 totally agreed. Cornell is my favorite singer.
@apollo11bb gimme a high five for that my bro! ✋
As a long time guitarist I love this shit keep up the good work
I miss him
Wow. You can pretty much sing like Chris Cornell. Respect 👊
your voice is killer !! no one sings like chris any more
@derek davis noone has and noone ever will sing like Chris!
I was thinking the thinking the same thing. He does a damn good job hitting his register.
This is the first time I ever heard someone break down his singing technique like this, and for the first time I realise he is, actually, playing by the same rules as all of us, and not some kind of super human freak! An incredible singer.
Right!?! that "same rules" revelation that you speak of is exactly how I felt when I discovered this stuff!!
Mike Patton has a career that begins in the late 80's with Mr. Bungle, up to today in front of an orchestra, before you get to Faith No More in the middle of it. He would fill several videos worth of lessons.
I agree, he's on the list!
Chris Liepe Thanks for the great work. Nothing better than watching someone who knows what they're doing, to break down my favorite music.
Man, he reminds of Rob Halford singing 4 Soundgarden on this song🎸🎶🍻🍸
nice :)
There a version of this song that blows this away vocally...
This is how these reactions are supposed to be. Not just a clickbaity bullsh*t
The Germany perf is gold!
I would love to hear your take on Jim Morrison and his husky blues screams. The Lizard King lives! Thanks again!
"I'd love to hear what you think about Layne Staley. Alice In Chains - Love Hate Love Live is an amazing performance."
thats the best version of the song live , think thats the April 1990 in Germany . Fkn EPIC..
What a song to start with
honestly, beyond the wheel is the perfect one to start with, even though it's high, because its thin mix. It's way easier to sing that stuff like Burden In My Hand which is more of a chesty middle mix.
After my cat watched this she turned into a tiger.
Can we all agree, Chris Cornell is the greatest singer ever? I can sing some, I do for practice; I do throat singing; beyond the wheel is my go to for what I strive for... I've seen him multiple times; I saw him do a duet with Maynard
Chris was a vocal god. I don’t know many others who came close.
You should consider reacting to TOOL. Maynard James Keenan is a fantastic singer.
Good content
4- solista.

Ultra Mega Ok was at least a few years old by the time the first live version you listened to.
Check out my "mixed voice" course at www.mymusicalvoice.com... You might be ready for it!
