Let's sit back, take in and enjoy several masterful Chris Cornell singing lines while looking deeper at his sound and some of the techniques he employs to achieve that golden voice. No one will ever come close to singing or sounding like Chris Cornell, but we can learn from him, be inspired by him and let his influence improve our singing ...And it's just plain fun to dissect some of these lines. :) It was SO hard to select this first group of examples, so let me know if you'd like me to do another 1, 2 or more videos like this!

His lyrics are a VERY overlooked aspect of us liking his voice. He knew his voice & chose words to show the best of it.Words w/ a big "eh" vowel is used w/ grit in many songs including Pretty noose,Rust cage,Hunger strike,Like a stone (the word "patiently")etc. He knew he shined on big vowels & chose words accordingly to kick our asses.

First off, thanks for doing more Chris Cornell stuff in this format, really insightful. Second, I've basically learned how to sing by just trying to sing Soundgarden songs. I don't know if that's a bad thing since you encourage not imitating singers, but its an easy thing to fall into when you like someone's voice. Anyway, I think I've done okay so far but for whatever reason getting grit is harder for me on high notes. I can hit them clean but I can't get the right distortion, but that may be because my support system is underdeveloped because of my disability, I don't know for sure. But Chris is someone I definitely want to be like even if it doesn't sound the same. Thanks for the video, Chris, and on my birthday no less! (Forgot to add, but you should breakdown some of his lines off his Higher Truth album. Beautiful stuff in there)

As talented as a singer as he was, it's ultimately his instrument that gives him so much soul and uniqueness. He was just born with the right DNA, and then he harnessed it ... ie...many metal and rock singers can hit all these notes and even give a fantastic delivery....BUT, it's not with the same character he had inherit in his voice. His voice was fantastic and I was mesmerized since I first heard Louder than Love in early 91.

As a classical tenor who also loves Cornell I've got to say this is a great lesson!
But I've got a question, when I listen to Chris's takes and you in the high mix, I listen to some kind of reinforced and compressed head voice with tons of distortion by the usage of fry. Something very hard to do, which I guess it would be a similar approach to other singers' one (Halford, Axl Rose, Brian Johnson, etc..).
Even I guess that's what the greats Michael Kiske or Geoff Tate do (both do that without the grit produced by the use of fry).
I've been trying to practice this thing, but I've got to improve the transitioning (the ending of Say hello to heaven is an incredible example of how Chris transitioned between his registers effortlessly) and, as a classical trained singer, I've found a bit difficult to do, because, regardless of being able to sing rock, pop, soul... The larynx and soft palate positions change so much that it's hard to gain that trick!!!
    Any advice?
    Thanks! 🤗
