Clarification: Ride to Happiness' drive tires roll the train back to the launch platform where guests can evacuate, not the main station. Although it would be awesome if they could send the trains backwards through the Jojo roll. That would be the best evac ever.
I think I'd have been inclined to design them so they accelerate the train just enough to make sure it didn't valley. then there's no evacuation required.
I think it'd have been better if it could roll them over the hill so they could complete the rest of the layout while the operators shut the ride down.
Can confirm the final turn on Pegasus is incredibly painful haha. My parents conked heads on that final turn and they still talk about how awful it was ten years later.
I got the “chance” to ride Pegasus and the many other “Olympians”. Below is my 10ish word for all of the coasters unless specified these were front or really close to it. Zeus-A fitting lighting logo but not terribly rumbly.(The day I went, I had the fortune of experiencing this in a downpour. It didn’t for the rest of the day but I thought this was worth noting). Hades 360(Mid-Train): Hell’s not this cruel. Hades 360: Tolerable but still hell on my body. Cyclops: Not an ugly monster but still a monster. Pegasus: I’d be in less pain taking on Spiral Pegasus. Overall: Glad I got to experience but not rushing back to it…maybe just keep to the water park…or not…who knows.
The idea that Arrow Dynamics didn't think the upstop pads instead of wheels would be a problem on Magnum XL-200 before its initial release is... amazing to me. Let alone the metal lap bar... its nuts. With a coaster that large, and at that speed... it seems almost inevitable these would be issues. Regardless, a very interesting video! Look forward to the Lightning Rod one!
I used to have an old VHS of an early test run POV on Magnum. At the crest of every hill, you could hear the upstop pads scraping the rails. It sounded like radio static.
Ive always thought the same thing, like obviously pads would cause way too much friction and be way less practical than wheels, and why would they think to first try this out on a record breaking, limit pushing coaster like Magnum? Maybe they thought the upstop wheels wouldnt be as necessary since the coaster had no inversions?
@@AlexAfferMetallica Arrow considered Magnum to be basically a very large scale mine train. The cars and chassis were pulled directly from that line - and those used the unstop pads. The first 'large mine train' model posing as a regular coaster was Astroworld's "Dexter Frebish's Electric Roller Ride" (later named Excalibur) that featured a large drop near the beginning of the layout, then basically did lots of helixes and mine train-style stuff, only way up on stilts. That drop worked just fine with the pads, except for the back car, which would smack those pads on the underside of the track and catapult back-seat riders into their lap bars (which were at least six inches above their laps). It was deliciously terrifying, especially for folks who'd ridden the ride many times, but never before in the back seat. The looks on their faces said it all.
I really appreciate how you always show both positive and negative aspects when you talk about things especially when it comes to negative topics. It's refreshing to just not have it constantly be a sour note like most would. It really shows how much you appreciate the industry, especially since you're in it!
It only looks crazy. There are lateral jolts on many other coasters that snap you even more. What makes this one different is where it is, being at the end of the ride, where it makes no sense. At least there aren't over-the-shoulder restraints to bash your head into, like you get with Cedar Point's Raptor, which has an even more violent jolt into the brake run.
I've ridden Pegasus several times. It can't be too bad, as I really didn't have any recollection of it until this video, and then I thought, "yeah, I think I remember that."
Just a bit sad to see Twisted Colossus on here, though I understand why. Even without the dueling feature, it's one of the best rides I've ever been on.
It isn't good and won't ever be good unless and until they untwist it. EDIT: I realize this is a pejorative comment, but as someone who very much prefers milder rides... RMC's fetish for adding unnecessary intensity to what had often previously been family or moderate-intensity coasters irks me to no end. And after what they did to Colossus, the one major coaster at Magic Mountain I was likely to work up the nerve to ride... I have little reason to go there.
@@ZeldaTheSwordsman I can totally understand where you're at. Totally. Colossus was a HUGE part of my life as a kid and I was upset to see it go. I love intense rides so I can back Twisted Colossus while also appreciating your stance.
Here's another one that doesn't get brought up - the original audio system on Space Mountain at Disneyland. After the success of Space Mountain: De La Terre A La Lune, Space Mountain got a new audio system with a score composed by Dick Dale. However this system added a lot of weight to the trains, specifically the batteries. Not only did these batteries never get charged properly, causing the music to not play, it also caused excessive stress to the track and structure, causing it to be structurally compromised, and led to the 2005 retracking by Dynamic Attractions, as well as almost a complete rebuild of the structure, with supports being dug more underground to support the new track/trains.
The constant footage of roller coasters on their journeys is what for me, makes this channel so enjoyable to watch. There’s something so smooth and satisfying watching a coaster going round loops, rolls and drops. It makes me want to try them all out 😊.
I know Mr Freeze would run a lot more reliably with the LIMs on the base of the spike, but the weightless feeling of being on the vertical spike and getting pushed up is my fav part of the ride
Plus it only really valleys during the winter (at least at SFOT) which is when the Freeze is closed for temps or high winds pretty frequently anyways. I think I have seen Mr Freeze valley during the summer less than 5 times in 10 years
I actually really like the the idea of twisted colossus. You get to ride both tracks in one run. I think there should be a holding break before the second lift hill, with maybe a feature that doesn't allow you to wait more than 3 minutes or something (if thats possible :/ ) I'm pretty sure people would rather wait than not race
I've actually been on Texas Tornado. Whenever I visit my family in Amarillo, we usually go to wonderland and every time we go, some of us try to get as many rides as we can. It's a pretty fun coaster with some really funny history, so if you're near the area, you should definitely check it out.
As someone who regularly went to six flags St. Louis I never knew the reasons for Mr freeze being closed every so often. From where it’s placed in the park you can’t see it from outside the que and employees never really explained what was going on. After watching this everything makes so much more sense for why it takes so long for them to open the ride back up.
I'd jate to say it but Twisted collosus somewhat deserves to be there. As a Roller Coaster Operator i understand the pain of not being able to dispatch trains on time. From my experience, the main thing that prevents dispatching on time is the guest, including myself, is not having loose articles ready/ or left at the queue or with a non-rider, taking bags up to the station. With only one train on our track, it severly drops our ridership per hour. BUT as a Roller Coaster Operator; the main thing that prevents dispatching on time is the guest. not having loose articles ready, taking bags up to the station. My ride has one train and it does severely drop our riders per hour. IF TC gets a dual station, i do hope is simillar to Tatsus Station....
I had the absolute blissful experience of sitting backseat on Twisted Collosus while the trains were perfectly synced and dueling. It was absolutely amazing. I also rode it without getting lucky on the dueling feature but still a great ride. However, if you get it to duel and you sit backseat to watch the twists in front of you, it’s an experience beyond anything.
Surprised Kings Island’s Bat (the 80s original) didn’t make the list. The lack of banked turns caused the coaster to tear itself apart in less than 2 years.
I rode it in maybe 2014 idk I was young but even then I hated it. It was still jerky and uncomfortable. Definitely not a favorite as I was just being introduced to roller coasters and actually riding them around then.
Twisted Colossus really comes down to the riders. I rode it for the commercial shoot and those perfect duels both times around the track were amazing. I have not gotten a duel since. Came close once but as you know, if the first train drops, then your done.
I only rode it twice in my life (I'm from Paris, France, so Six Flags Magic Moutains isn't really my homepark 🤣) and I was lucky enough to have it duel the first time, that was amazing. Still a great ride even without the duel though.
I have ridden TC during dueling with another train it was an unreal experience ❤ My favorite part is looking up to see the train above me as a fly by over my head and then looking down as I fly above them.
4:27 Absolutely insane Arrow built an AIRTIME machine with.... up-stop pads. Just insane. And I called Lightning Rod needing refab within 5 years. I remember people telling me I was being paranoid and silly. Haha. Just no way a launched wood coaster was going to work long term. I don't even really consider them real wood coasters either. 9:35 Can you imagine how many neck injuries that park gets if you're not expecting it?
6:35 That's probably still true, and Twisted Timbers probably also has a lower ridership than Dominator, because a B&M Floorless has a higher capacity than an IntAmIn Giga or an RMC IBox. Although, the blackout turn probably also contributed.
9:45 Though there are some reverse bucket list coasters, a lot of people who are hard-core GP who used to be enthusiasts, but aren't paying attention to coasters or enthusiasts, which I fall into one of those two, want credits at all costs.
seems like the best solution for twisted colossus would be to remodel the platform so there is an unload section, a load section, and three trains. then there is plenty of time to unload, and move the third train forward to load, and still anticipate the starting light for the race. then simply put the personal item lockers on a system that presents the same lockers the riders had before they loaded at the unload platform when their train comes in.
* 4 trains ;) and yes, something like that should work, to get the dispatch timing right. But even with 1 station I would expect an extra train should help to get the timing right.
I can attest to blacking out on Intimidator 305. My daughter and I road it on the first weekend and throughout that summer. She and I put our hands up on our very first ride. I saw on the turn that her hands had dropped. She was out cold until the airtime hill rebooted her. It happened every time she rode it through the summer until the trim breaks were installed.
Having Twisted Colossus break for the other train would be worth it for a dual kinda like Westcoast Racers. It'd be easier to have lockers and some sort of video in the queue hyping up dueling and preparing riders what's needed for that to happen.
If they could maybe slow the first train down a bit more I'd still be satisfied cause I love it when people rush the other train as it's inching up the lift XD
Excellent video! Though I was under the impression the second "launch" on Mr. Freeze was primarily there to push the train further up the spike. That's what it looks like, at least. I'm sure it provides some downward push as well, I don't see why it couldn't, but I would think the natural boost given from the extra height would be more reliable. Either way, still a super interesting video! I love these!
Couple things about Mr. Freeze. The two versions at OT and STL are actually different in that they are mirror images of each other. STL turns left into the top hat, and OT turns right. Second, the LIM’s actually push the train further up the spike, not pull it down faster than gravity.
At Gardaland there is a coaster called Shaman with a transition so violent that it’s worse as a design flaw than anything on this list! Even if you brace for it you cannot protect yourself.
My brother and I went on Pegasus on an off day, so there was no one in line. We stayed on the ride for about six runs. The end bank was actually kind of fun, but I can see why people hated it. Our parents were worried about how much the structure wobbled more than anything else. 😂
I live an hour from Mt Olympus and have been on its 4 wooden coasters too many times to count. Pegasus is painfully boring until that last turn, then it's just painful. It's a neck breaker for sure, and it always catches you off guard. I would say Hades 360 is more painful on your neck overall though from sheer roughness. It's a cool layout but it's a guaranteed headache, neckache, and backache after 1 ride, even as a kid.
Viper is not rough to me- it’s actually one of the best in the park! It’s not rough, nor super smooth, so it’s just average. The only head-banging moment I had was on the final corkscrews.
I-305 is still capable of blacking people out. Source: me in 2021. It was kind of hilarious. I woke up several turns later thinking I was having a dream, and then being freaked out that I was dreaming about being on a rollercoaster. I've been on it since then, and I blame dehydration.
I really don't care about the dueling issue with twisted colossus cuz it's such a great ride! I wish more dueling coaster would be designed to do both sides in one ride!
I could only imagine someone riding I305 and waking up from a blackout on the twisted part of the ride and freaking out, or waking up on break run wondering where your pillow and cover is?
I've never blacked out on i305, but I have on Viper at Magic Mountain. One moment, I was going through the 3rd loop, then I was immediately on the mid-course brake run, realizing instantly that I lost a few seconds. It was so cool!
I am well aware of Hopkin’s coasters. Desert storm is my home park’s main attraction and it still carries out the legacy of Texas tornado with some oddly shaped (but awesomely forceful) loops.
Pegasus - Many years ago, as I waited for the arriving train, a woman in a bikini top found herself exposed due to the lateral jerk at the end of the ride. I'm not sure which of us were more surprised. 😲
The Pegasus turn into the final break run looks like it could break your neck. I think I may skip this one if I ever make it there I am 50 years old and like the way my neck functions as it is.
6:49 I rode Intimidator 305 a couple of weeks ago, for my first time ever. As we found out after the ride, another rider greyed out early on. But he still had a good time. And, quite honestly, I wouldn't change a thing. It was fantastic.
The LIM system on Mr. Freeze does not accelerate the train down the spike. It pushes the train further up so it will have enough speed to make the return trip.
I used to go to Mt Olympus Every summer as a kid with my family. Zeus, Hades, and Pegasus are all fun wooden coasters. But even as a child that final turn on Pegasus is brutal. It really just hits you as if being punch in the face by a UFC fighter while not paying attention.
I can definitely agree that the Pegasus's in Mount Olympus at Wisconsin dells is a very horrible ride experience. I definitely would not recommend going on it, it gave me a very severe headache for the rest of the day
The fix for Twisted Colossus, is to have a third train running. This gives it a two minute loading time instead of one, unload before pulling into the station. So empty trains are always delivered to the loading dock.
10:00 I used to ride that when I was a child. Pegasus’ last turn was really a body banger. Sometimes it wouldn’t be as bad but others you feel like you got shot
i operated mr freeze at st louis, the reason that one valleys is not the launch motors, one of the trains has issues with drag on the metal fins, i worked an entire season without a valley, however, the bad train stops before the station several times a week, sometime several times a day, the drag gets so bad the it almost cant make it through the tophat quite often, thats how you know its going to underpark
Always cool to see King's Dominion on any list. I'd been going there since the early 80's when it was originally owned by King Entertainment. First coaster I ever rode as a kid was The Grizzly. I was always too young to ride the King Cobra when it was still there in operation. Shockwave was my first coaster with an inversion. So many fond memories.
Magnum is and will always be my favorite coaster. I love riding at night over and over because there’s never a long wait these days. If you learn how to ride this ride it isn’t as uncomfortable as most claim it to be.
Just remember when Lightning rod was new, one time I was standing in line and watched the ride break down in real time. I saw the car roll backwards and just said to myself “oh no, I’m going to be able to ride.” Sure enough 3 minutes later they announced the ride was shut down due to technical difficulties.
Honorable Mention: Nessie at HansaPark in germany. Rather loud final brake run, housed in an uninsulated tin metal tunnel (think: Pipe). Yeah you can hear the brakes roar across half the park, and you're advised to plug your ears when you dive into the tunnel.
I remember seeing Mr. Freeze when I went to Six Flags Over Texas and thought it was crazy that people were riding it. The day after I left the ride ironically had caught on fire.
Im surprised flags hadn’t refurbished the freeze clones and replaced the lims with lsms and add them to the valley same thing with the chiller i think if they did this the chiller would still be going today
Pegasus hurt to ride and it wasn't from the fun Woodie variety of roughness. I legitimately cheered when I was told that Pegasus was getting a retrack.
The last one is a classic design flaw where something works well on paper, even with computer modelling, even under test conditions, but fails once exposed to the public. It's always a big problem with engineering (both mechanical and software). People are unpredictable and if they can mess things up they will.
Went on Twisted Collosus last weekend. Both laps were a race. Though when we got in the station they said the on coming riders only had 30 seconds if they wanted a race.
Did a "spit TAKE" on the reverse bucket list of coasters to ride! Nahhhh! That's a hard PASS! Had forgotten about up-stop pads on Magnum. Excalibur & Serpent had them at AstroWorld. 85 ft. & 20 ft. tall lift hills though. Texas Tornado looks sooooo quirky!
There's a coaster in Cedar Point called The Mine Cart (or Mine Ride). It's a tamer, smaller coaster to start kids out on becoming thrill seekers. When you look at it it looks smooth, but it jerks you around turns and often feels bumpier than Gemini or their other older wooden coasters which says a lot! As a kid I thought the jerkiness was great. As an adult, I rode it last year and had my elbow hit the side of the cart multiple times on the turns. It was that jerky and I'm a small person. I had a dad say something behind me and his kid said "Why not?" I can only assume it was "We are not riding this again."
Was at Dollywood this Monday. Lightninh rod was out of service the whole day. It would suck to lose a coaster, but if it has that many issues they should either scrap it, or completely rebuild it.
As a Mansfield local, Adena is pronounced Ah-dee-nah. Adena’s special projects company Adena XPG has been involved with many of Cedar Points ride construction projects. Including Gatekeeper, Valravn and Maverick on top of many others! I also know from talking to a few employees that they are involved in some bigger parks in Florida as well.
lol i'm pretty sure my sister's (now ex) bf passed out on the intimidator. king's dominion was the closest theme park to me growing up so we went there a lot. i still miss the volcano
Twisted colossus' racing concept does have a working version that works every time, afaik, joris en de draak/George And the dragon in the Netherlands efteling
Ive been on pegasus and let me tell you that last turn is more painful than you explained it to be, it is exceedingly rough and it hurts a lot when you go through that turn, its liek someome diid use the autocomplete button in planet coaster
4:08 is the roughest coaster I've ever ridden. It feels like you're going to fly out and die while it's endlessly shaking you back and fourth. Hate it.

I recall one or two visits to SFMM where they were running three trains. It was a particularly busy day and the racing idea was heavily disregarded 💀
I think you're right. One of the coasters has free lockers. Tatsu maybe?
If they could maybe slow the first train down a bit more I'd still be satisfied cause I love it when people rush the other train as it's inching up the lift XD
Excellent video! Though I was under the impression the second "launch" on Mr. Freeze was primarily there to push the train further up the spike. That's what it looks like, at least. I'm sure it provides some downward push as well, I don't see why it couldn't, but I would think the natural boost given from the extra height would be more reliable. Either way, still a super interesting video! I love these!
Interestingly enough, it does both. It accelerates the train up and down the spike. Really cool! And thanks for the compliment! :)
That was my thought as well when I rode it a decade ago.
It does not accelerate the train down the spike. It moves it further up and then free falls.
Maverick's heartline roll will sure be missed, I really understand why it failed, and I hope something better will be good in place!
The heartline roll was replaced with the S curve BEFORE the ride was opened to the public. It's why the initial opening was delayed.

I wish iron gwazi at Busch gardens Tampa would’ve been like twisted colossus cause gwazi was a dueling coaster when it opened
That final turn on Pegasus has me in tears, why would they do that LMAO
I305 is probably one of my most ridden coasters, but i’ve only blacked out on once! I thought it was fun tbh
Don't forget about how some b&m ride supports had to be filled with sand because of the noise it would make.
I once got a double duel on Twisted Colossus. Probably the rarest coaster experience I’ve ever had
Even the most intense coasters can sometimes be a bit too intense (even for the track)
I am well aware of Hopkin’s coasters. Desert storm is my home park’s main attraction and it still carries out the legacy of Texas tornado with some oddly shaped (but awesomely forceful) loops.
That second loop in particular has some wacky shaping.
Even now, I hear Maverick is having issues with the LSM launch. I heard the operators can actually predict when and how long it will go down lol! 😂
I had time to ride twisted colossus only once and I live in Sweden and I got a double perfect race! I was just ecstatic during that ride haha
Pegasus - Many years ago, as I waited for the arriving train, a woman in a bikini top found herself exposed due to the lateral jerk at the end of the ride. I'm not sure which of us were more surprised. 😲
Oops
I live 15 minutes away from the ride to happiness 😁
Lucky!
The way I gasped when you said Tower of Terror had a 6.5 G drop, that sounds horrifying
Texas Tornado is a fan favorite at the park, and I actually love it for some reason
Why?
I can definitely agree that the Pegasus's in Mount Olympus at Wisconsin dells is a very horrible ride experience. I definitely would not recommend going on it, it gave me a very severe headache for the rest of the day
What i would suggest for twisted colossus is to add a countdown in the station so that people are rushed to enter the train
The fix for Twisted Colossus, is to have a third train running. This gives it a two minute loading time instead of one, unload before pulling into the station. So empty trains are always delivered to the loading dock.
Pegasus was legit the funniest ride I’ve ever been on. I forced my wife to go on it with me and we had an absolute blast and just about died laughing
Twisted is my favorite coaster. The racing thing didn't really add or take anything from it other than waving at people before the drop
Haha
TPC: "Then if someone takes 500 years-"
Me: 😂😂😂😂
Texas Tornado’s loops is the definition of working on a budget and not wanting to go over
10:00 I used to ride that when I was a child. Pegasus’ last turn was really a body banger. Sometimes it wouldn’t be as bad but others you feel like you got shot
The first bump on the ride to happiness, thats some poetic ass shit right there
i operated mr freeze at st louis, the reason that one valleys is not the launch motors, one of the trains has issues with drag on the metal fins, i worked an entire season without a valley, however, the bad train stops before the station several times a week, sometime several times a day, the drag gets so bad the it almost cant make it through the tophat quite often, thats how you know its going to underpark
Texas tornados loops are crazy
I rode Intimidator when it first opened…I remember blacking out, the reprofile is still intense but much more bearable
ride to happiness getting stuck was massive news here in Belgium lol, I remember being scared cause I was planning a trip
I saw the car roll backwards and just said to myself “oh no, I’m going to be able to ride.” Sure enough 3 minutes later they announced the ride was shut down due to technical difficulties.
ride to happiness didn't valley, it stalled due to the high winds, which could happen on any coaster, especially ones with top hats.
3:50 That little arm pump by the kid in the front row would be me if I was on that ride. I just think of it as extra ride time!
13:20 Didn´t know that for the removal of the heartline roll, but it makes sense: It wasn´nt the forces on the riders, but the structure. 👍
Person: *Takes forever to empty out their pockets before going on the Twisted Colossus.*
Rest of the Passengers: *Disapproving glares.*
That Pegasus whip cracks me up! I can't wait to ride it.
The last one is a classic design flaw where something works well on paper, even with computer modelling, even under test conditions, but fails once exposed to the public. It's always a big problem with engineering (both mechanical and software). People are unpredictable and if they can mess things up they will.
I've ridden the Texas Tornado so many times and never new the story behind it. Hillarious.
I rode majority of the U.S. coasters on this list and my head was saying: Dude, can you eat some lunch while I regroup from those hairpin turns..LOL.
I’d like to give mention to the unbanked turns on the old arrow hanging coasters… just wild.
Texas Tornado’s loop is pretty bad and an eyesore for me. They could’ve at least fixed it so it wouldn’t look so bad.
Lightning Rod's launch is being replaced with a chain lift after the 2023 season!
I didn't expect Mr Freeze on here. Must be a chilling spot lol
Twisted colossus' racing concept does have a working version that works every time, afaik, joris en de draak/George And the dragon in the Netherlands efteling
I love the idea that all roller Coaster designers use Planet Coaster to design them.
For the Texas tornado the first inversion doesn’t seem like it should have too many issues, so why was it unable to complete the first loop?
Ive been on pegasus and let me tell you that last turn is more painful than you explained it to be, it is exceedingly rough and it hurts a lot when you go through that turn, its liek someome diid use the autocomplete button in planet coaster
4:08 is the roughest coaster I've ever ridden. It feels like you're going to fly out and die while it's endlessly shaking you back and fourth. Hate it.
When the Titan opened at Sixflags over Texas I grayed out on it twice on an upward corkscrew. Still pretty fun though.
