- An estimated 700,000 adults in the U.S. have received a controversial treatment known as reparative, or conversion therapy, under the belief that homosexuality is caused by nurture, not nature, and can be "cured." Erin Moriarty talks with young men and women who had undergone the treatment (voluntarily or at the behest of their families) in order to adhere to their church's teachings; with Alan Chambers, who was the charismatic director of Exodus International, which promised to convert those with "same-sex attraction"; Nashville pastor Stan Mitchell, who has rejected conversion therapy; and Jeff Johnston of Focus on the Family, which continues to promote the practice for parishioners who do not want to be gay.

People can't change themselves, but they want to change other people. Hypocrisy abounds.
Tanuki - What gives the religious bigots a sliver of help is that there are ‘some’ people that attempt to change or are successful. There are bisexuals, who can ‘chose’ to ignore their gay feelings and try daily to be heterosexual. But these facts don’t enter their mindsets, they think cure one, all can be cured. I for one firmly believe that the process of ‘conversion therapy’ does infinitely more harm than good. If ANYTHING should ever happen or be allowed, it should occur in a 5-10 minute supervised conversation, it should be supportive, and life affirming. Before you tear me apart, what I am speaking of is a simple "There are some people with sexual feelings for both sexes, and some of those can chose to focus on one, but that might not be for you. Denying your feelings can create more problems for you, so we only as that you consider our words and apply them if you wish." The rest of the conversation should be the importance of accepting yourself, as you are, and knowing that God loves you, and created you, exactly as you are. Then following the 10 minute conversation the parents should spend many, many hours in counseling to learn how God and they can accept their child exactly as he or she is.

I don’t understand people who think sexuality is a choice. I’m straight. I cannot be otherwise. I was born this way. Are the people who call that a choice or a lifestyle implying that they themselves are straight by choice, that they don’t feel incontrovertibly, innately straight, but could be gay if they chose? @kerri b-They don't endorse Communism in the school in my town, nor have I heard of Communism being taught as a political philosophy in any school in the greater Cincinnati area or anywhere in America for that matter.
I know this because I have family who goes these school and none of them want to overthrow the government in a Communist coop. Social Study classes may teach about Communism's history, but as far as I know, none of the schools in my area are using conversion therapy tactics like 40 pounds of rocks in a backpack to turn students in Bolsheviks.
And if this was the case, I'm sure that the news channels, especially FOX News, would have reported it.

The evidence suggests that, if he ever performs such transformations, he does so once in a blue moon. As for adolescents, if their sexual attractions change as they get older, that’s fine. If they don’t, that’s fine too. What they definitely DON’T need is officious adults abusively trying to tamper with their sexuality and subjecting them to useless hocus-pocus like “conversion therapy”.

So, as a survivor of conversion therapy, i am now working (after a near 15 year recovery period) to change the law in my state (Virginia). My "therapy", which was done through a church which still does it, caused me to be so suicidal that I resorted to taking drugs to get though the sessions. A lifelong addiction problem has ensued; thankfully finally in recovery from that. But in the end I am still a Christian - I actually believe it is the typical evangelical who has been deceived on the whole issue. They almost succeeded in me losing my faith and that is the ultimate result of conversion therapy: separation from normal human relationships and ultimately separation from a relationship with God. According to the Bible all good work bears fruit and a tree will be known by it's fruit. The fruit of conversion therapy is emotional, psychological, and spiritual devastation that can result in death. It is NOT of God in any way.

And I want you to be very aware of what you just did, because it's a tactic that is used in conversion therapy. You just equated being gay to being depraved, degenerate, unhappy, and enslaved. That's quite a logical jump. For example, if someone who is gay has been shamed their whole life, and you come up to them and assign the word degenerate to their sexuality, what's happening is that you are encouaraging them to embrace shame. You're also affiliating unhappiness with being gay, rather than with the ostracism and judgment people face FOR being gay. So, what you're actually doing is you're trying to take someone who is vulnerable and turn them into the monster, and after being confronted with that logic, especially as a teenager, my gosh is it really a surprise that so many people try to go through these programs? Could you imagine what it's like to wake up and think of yourself as a monster or a disease every day? The road to self-acceptance is extremely difficult for the lgbtq community members who grow up around this kind of talk, because not only do you have to start seeing the world differently, but you have to unassign the shame that you've been taught to place on yourself from your thought processes, and you can turn it into embracing yourself for the first time, unconditionally. It wastes so much time in a lot of people's lives, a staunch juxtaposition from so many members of the lgbtq community that come out to love and acceptance on day one. Evangelicals in general seem to have a 5th grade level of understanding with the Bible. Very surface level skimming, not taking into account the time and place of when the literature was written. The other day I picked up my daughter's college back pack. It was so heavy I thought I would check the weight. it was 20 pounds. I can't imagine carrying 40 pounds of rocks every day. When people say that being gay is a sin and from the devil I have to wonder if maybe the people who are having a 15 year old girl carry 40 pounds of rock every day that could have potentially damaged her back might actually be the one that are the evil people.

Very few say this, mostly this statement is outdated. Attraction is not chosen or implemented. But how you deal with it is 100% a choice. You actively choose to act on these desires or don't. This is what most mean with "choice".

The mom reminds me of my mom when I came out to her. I had to talk to a pastor, start homeschool, my mom talked to me everyday asking if I had a crush on a guy so I could stray away from him, And she recently tried to make me go to conversion therapy. Which didn't work. Parents please just teach your kids about the loving God we all know and Love. Not the conservative ideal god..
I think a person's sexual preference can change, but it's not something you can shape. And it's certainly not something conversion therapy can "fix."

If Christians followed the Bible literally (with all its proscriptions) they would not eat pork, would not eat lobster or crab, would not eat cheeseburgers, would not get remarried after divorce, would not do any physical work on Saturday, would not gossip, would not wear fabric blends (Leviticus 19 : 19 reads: “You shall not wear a garment upon you of two kinds of material mixed together.”) Obviously they do not accept the entire Bible as the word of God or they would not be deciding what parts to obey and what parts to throw out. If Christians actually followed Christ's message they would "turn the other cheek" when struck, they would give away their belongings to the poor. So many things in the Bible are either selectively cited or else interpreted to mean what people want them to say. There are many good people who follow a Christian religion and I do not doubt their sincere concern to live a good life. I think that they got bogged down in the literal translations. Most of us want to do the right thing in all circumstances but there are also many good people without a religion or who belong to a non-Western religion and they must be respected as well. I remember the "crisis" I encountered when several close friends told me they were atheists. At the time I could not reconcile how anyone not believing in God could have strong ethical principles (benevolent to the extreme). Now I see that this world is not the province of any particular philosophy, religion or even country. Having an open mind can help us all to form important alliances to solve many problems. A bumper sticker I saw recently said it all: GOD BLESSES EVERYONE (not just Americans).

The fact she had to hear someone preach about how good conversion therapy is right after hearing two stories of people who almost killed themself because of it is so insane to think about.

This video makes me sick. The fact that Sunday Morning gave people a platform to say that homosexuality is wrong is disappointing and most of the video does not even go against this point. If Sunday Morning is going to cover a controversial topic, it should provide both sides throughout the video, not just at the end, especially since most people probably won't watch the whole video.

I was also sent to a doctor when I just needed to trust Jesus who is The Word of God. By faith in Jesus, His death on the cross for my sins, I overcame what doctors could not treat. My condition was not homosexuality but deep depression and hopelessness. Doctors had no power to help me but Jesus did.
