To stretch out the spring to its original position I took the tension off the spring again, then adjusted the side to side position by pulling on the bars I had inserted into the sprocket. Once it looked like it was in the right position tightened the spring again, this time holding it in position, and reset the wire drums. Sorry I didn't show this but it wasn't difficult to do.
that is my problem. Unfortunately, I have to move support that I had welded on for spring assembly installation( trailer had never had a spring installed. had to weld supports to mount. I didn't realize the needed adjustment of sliding the spring so it would have room to wind when door is lowered.) I liked your simple no BS video.
Thank you. Mine was only on one cable when i picked this trailer up , sure enough that one cable snapped at the door end. That spring tension whipped that cable up so fast it sliced 12" gaping hole in my ceiling. Man I was glad I already pulled the motorcycle out seconds before. Awesome video . Now I'll make sure I'm running both sides with the proper tension.
I have been repairing a damaged ramp door just like this and today was "cable day" mine is the exact same hardware as yours except for I only have one spring which is on the passenger side and the same sprocket in the middle.....Marine Corp Veteran (me) a Retired Ortho Surgeon with many other notable achievements licenses and degrees, and a home builder (that makes 3 people total) couldn't figure this the F out. had my first experience of what happens when something goes wrong under high spring tension...cables flew everywhere and I suffered only minor damage in the form or rope (cable) burn across my wrist. lmao...3 men who refused to watch a few How to Vids here and thats what happened. thanks for the insight and it seems we weren't far off... just a matter of doing things in the right order. Ive also seen and read other things about putting tension on the spring before setting it. I would assume that the goal would to be to counter as much weight of the door as possible...to essential make it effortless.
Yup same here, the cable got caught in a bolt and the door stopped halfway and locked itself. Lucky me. Since its new, its covered by warranty but its 1 week again. going to fix it myself and move on.
Thanks. You solved my problem with my door not going down. Spring compression was my issue as well. Stretching the spring a few inches solved my problem. Thanks much.
Just purchased a trailer from Trailers Plus and the cables were unhound when i got the trailer home. I did it hard way on a box truck (roll up door) and that was a lot more dangerous and needed more muscle. This time i did it this way and it was easy. too easy. Just need that bit you used to adjust the pulley length on one end about half inch shorter. Anyways. Thanks for the video.
I have two trailers. Each is missing a cable on one side and has a single spring. But the single cable seems to do ok easing the door down. But id like put the second cable on. Not sure if i have to change the tension in the spring to use the second cable. Or can i wind the cable on and bolt in place.
My bar was all chewed up by the maniacs who built my trailer cranking down the bolts with a drill. I had to beat the hub over with a mini-sledge and now it's over a bit too far and it's making the spring sit wonky. But at least the tension is finally correct. Thanks for the vid!
First wind cable on the left on drum tighten it up the door was closed and put a vice grip on the torsion pipe go to the right side and tied the cable and then wind there this spring The calculation for whining spraying you measure the height of the door from the bottom to the top divided by 10+3 that’s how many line are you going to see on the spring if you draw a straight line before you wind the spring Orcall professional you still didn’t do it right the doors not smooth going down
How many turn I need to adjust the Spring. I have a same sistem double spring tension and when I try to open the door it can open easy and when you complete open the back door it closed automatically with power.
I took the cables off mine, big mistake and now trying to figure out how to wind them back up. How much weight will ramp handle? I drove my car on it and it didn't buckle
How did you fix the spring and pull it back into place. I can't find a video on that n you didn't show how u fixed yours n that's the exact problem I have
I loosened up the bolts and pulled the spring out (made it wider.) if you keep a socket on one of the bolts you can tease it out pretty easily. Just make sure the rotational stress is off the spring before you move it laterally. Once you move the end out tighten the bolts to hold it in position.
I have used a ratchet die down strap to stretch the spring to the right to prevent the coil compression referenced in the video,. I used a short 1/4" ratchet extension in one of the sprocket holes wrapping the ratchet strap around the ratchet extension to keep it in place. Pull from the top so the sprocket doesn't bind on the shaft. The large end of the ratchet extension fits nicely into the sprocket holes. You can use longer extension in place if the 1/2" rods.
With the tension off the spring I inserted a rod into one of the holes on each of the middle sprocket and pulled it back to toward the middle, then tightened the bolts. It moved fairly easy.
@@TheFritz423 thanks for the video man I'm going to attempt to do it trailer just have to find a buddy to close the door with me in it I have no other exits lol
Put the rods in, loosen the set bolts, move the spring towards the center and, while holding it there tighten a set bolt, remove the rods and tighten the other set bolt.
You should think or do some research before making uneducated remarks. It's a special socket to keep idiots from getting hurt or killed. Home Depot sells them or I'm sure you can find them elsewhere maybe Harbor freight, Lowes or a local automotive parts store. Yes a 8 point socket just like he shows you in his hand at 1:19 in the video. Measure the bolt head you have then buy a socket from a tool guy Snap on, Mac, Matco or Cornwell tools I'm sure can get you one.

For the life of me, I couldn't locate the "sprocket" or an "eight-point" socket. I did, however, locate the spool and plenty of twelve-point sockets.
Thanks oldman...I'm 72 so we are brothers. .I'm glad you still have all you fingers. That was as slick as a catfish 👍
Thank you. I adjusted my door and it to wouldn’t open. Didn’t realize the spring slid down. Your video made me see what was wrong.

I have the same issue with my car hauler! I am going to try this. Thanks for sharing! This was very helpful...
It worked very well! thanks again.👍
So the problem I have is you leave a lot of details out I would recommend this to solve anybody's problem😮
The part at the end of the video with the ? How did you get the spring back to its initial place? The video didn’t show that part .
Unscrew the lock for the springs jam piece. slide it over with the door shut (no tension).
Thank you for this! The damn door is so freaking heavy I nearly killed myself with it when the cable failed.

Did you tighten screws on end of spring? At what point?
Pretty insightful! Thanks for sharing.
How did you stretch the spring out at three end of the video??
Exactly!! That’s the only reason I came here!
Did y’all figure this out?
I figured it out:)
@@rogerallen8345 I figured it out today and going to make hopefully a more clear video for others. Thanks

plain and simple, as it should. good video mate.

how did you move the spring over?
Thanks man ! Very helpful!
Look up garage door spring installs for more info
I think something is wrong with my hernia operation ... I'm 2 months out .. and i can feel the edge 9f it. Inside me ...
I am in error, thank you for the info. I went to Lowe's, looking for a socket, no help there.
Good job my friend I was wondering if someday happened to me how I’m going to fix the problem but watching this video you help me a lot👍👍😅
Never saw u tightening up the spring. Did you do that
With the door closed I tightened it up just a little, then when the door opens that tightens the spring
Good Job See You next time I am down at Rogers
Thanks I get my door fixed one the first try 👌🤙👍☝️

Sadly you didn’t describe tightening the springs or moving the end piece toward the center. That’s where I’m stuck.
See my pinned comment, hope it helps.
You need to put more tension to the spring..the Ramp can't hit the ground hard
how did you get the spring back to it's original position? you didn't include that in the video. Thanks in advance!
With the tension off the spring I inserted a rod into one of the holes on each of the middle sprocket and pulled it back to toward the middle, then tightened the bolts. It moved fairly easy.
@@TheFritz423 so you don't need to wind the spring
Don Knicker not if the door is closed

My dads trailer door is like these ima try to fix it these Sunday for him lol, hopefully I dont lose a finger or eye
having same problem spring wont stay in orig spot
I'm dealing with this and it's a pain
How heavy is the door when you let it down?
Almost more than I could lift. I can heft 2 fifty pound bags of feed so I imagine over 100.
You have to stretch the springs
Yea this has whipped my ass long enough today I fix it. Lol I’m old too.
Thank you 🙏
Feel like the spring winding could’ve been much more informative.
Good job!!!
What size was the 8 point socket ?
Did you find out?
7/16" twelve point socket. Never heard of an eight pointer.
you did not show how you adjusted the springs
Old is far from expendable. Older is wiser. There is a major lack of wisdom in the up coming generation.
Thank you!
You showed an eight point socket, yet never said what the size it is
You use a 12 point socket, there is no such 8 point socket
@@bulldozermbm Go forth and sin no more
I have a couple extra EIGHT point socket sets if you're in the market to up your tool game 😁

Me to going to try it my self
I just did mine with door close, it is safer.and easier.
Could you enlighten us on the rest of the procedure?
Did you retension the spring after the cables were put on?
Thank you !
