  • How to Crochet the Sidewalk Shawl with Marly Bird. This is a Free Pineapple Stitch Crochet Shawl Pattern: Sidewalk Shawl by Kimberley McAlindin
This shawl is one of those pieces that will stop you in your tracks and make you say , "WHOA! I gotta make that!" It's no wonder that it is one of the top-selling patterns. Because of that, I figured I would show all of you how to begin this pattern which is made up of increasing pineapple stitches.
The pineapple stitch is a quintessential crochet stitch, just as the granny square is. But, the pineapple shawl can look a little intimidating if you have never done it before. Not to worry, in this video I show you exactly how to get started with this pattern all the way through row 10. I tell you how to use stitch markers to your advantage to know where the last stitch of your row is, and I tell you what stitches you are using and why you are using them to better help you understand the overall construction of the piece. You'll know all that you need to crochet this cozy shawl by the time the video is complete.

I just followed the video and have crocheted 10 rows of my first ever pineapple stitch! Your description below the video nailed it perfectly about how I felt when I saw this shawl! And, I was totally intimidated when I saw it was the pineapple stitch. I put it out of my mind, thinking I'd NEVER be able to do the pineapple stitch... Let alone a shawl full of them! I saw your video today and got so excited! I knew you'd be clear in your instruction and it just might help me conquer my fear of the pineapple stitch. And you didn't let me down! Thank you SO much! I can't wait until I'm finished and have this amazing shawl to add to my shawls that I love to wear! Yep. I'm hooked on shawls. 😊

I started this shawl but confused myself on the 4th row. Thankfully, you were there to save the day by doing this video!! I have to agree with you that reading the chart is much easier than reading the written pattern. Placing the markers was my mistake. Now I'm ready to start over! You are a wonderful teacher keeping your train of thought fluid as well as your crocheting while you are talking - absolutely amazing! Thank you, sincerely.

HI Marly, yes I loved it since I first saw it, thank you so much for this video, I have wanted to make this shawl for a while now, I started and gave up a few times, so happy I came across your video, I already subscribed to your channel, just one question in regards to the increase shell it states (2dc, [ch 2,dc] twice (doesn't that mean to ch 2, dc, ch 2, dc instead of ch 2, 2dc?) that is the only part that I am a tad confused about . If I was crochet the shawl this way, would the shawl be altered in any way. Thanks for the lace pattern, it does make it a bit easier to understand.

Hello! Thank you for this wonderful video for a beautiful shawl! Even I can follow your movements and understand how to do it although I'm a beginner :) However, I have a question. Since I'm not in the USA, I can't find Red Heart soft yarn. I'll try to find a yarn that's similar to it in thickness, etc. and I'll use a 5.5 mm hook (because I crochet a bit tight). Do you think I can get the gauge?

Thanks for such a great video. I have a question. You are using 4 ply yarn. I'm wanting to make a lighter weight yarn for a wedding shawl. Will this make the width/length smaller? If it does, what would you suggest to keep the dimensions the same?

Hi Marly! Thank you for this video! I'm curious about the Increase-shell. The instructions says "Work (2 dc, [ch 2, dc] twice, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated ch-space." In the video and in the pattern chart, you've done 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch2, 2 dc, ch2, 2dc (2 shells). Is there a reason for going with the [ch 2, 2dc] instead of the [ch 2, dc}? I'm new to chrochet and want to make sure I'm reading patterns correctly. I'm not sure if I just don't get it, or if you altered from the pattern, OR if the pattern has 'dc' instead of '2dc'! :) Thank you!

This pattern I've been trying to get for years, when I found it in a book I bought years ago. I've put it down a couple times, and am trying it again. And again, around row 10, when a new pineapple starts in the center, I can't seem to get the pattern to make sense. I'm going to rip it out, start again with you. Thx for making the video, I just wish you had gone a few more rows, when the 9 dc's get introduced.

Thank you! I tried to make The Big Easy Scarfl from Red Heart, and I found at least two mistakes in it. So frustrating for a beginner. I started over TEN TIMES and finally decided the instructions had to be wrong. It says to chain 23. Then to start stitching in the FOURTH chain from the hook. Then continue across in each chain to end up with a total of 21 stitches. HOW is that possible with only 20 chains? 23 minus 3 is 20. There is another mistake, but I won't go into it here.
What does one do to have the pattern corrected if it really is wrong and it isn't just me? Would appreciate any help.
I am going to try this pattern since the other is so problematic. Will it work with the MEDLEY yarn?

Hi Marly! I've completed this shawl and just cannot get the gist of how it's worn. Where does the 30 stitch beginning row go? It seems smaller than it needs to be, to be worn like the model is showing. Also, does that little 30 chain row get fringe? Thanks so much! :)

Georgia Ludlaim Hi dear, I am thrilled you like the videos. I know that you can do it with my help in the video and the accompanying crochet chart I had made. Once you get past the rows I showed on the video you will repeat the repeat section to increase the shawl. The repeat section is the shaded in area on the chart. Take a look and see if that helps ;-)

This shawl rather large but you would measure across the top for the width of the shawl. You would just continue repeating the full row repeat to make it larger but IMHO, it doesn't need to be much larger than it is. I am a size 2x and it fits me as written.

I did a rectangle type shawl from yarn free patterns and it did not fit and average size women it was definitely for slim no chest size. I used the correct yarn, hook and my guage is normal so it made me wary to give one away. 6 months new to crocheting so thanks. ..Love all u do. It's inspirational.

I might have made a mistake. It’s hard to crochet, talk and teach at the same time. :)

If you look again, Marly realises she has made a mistake and takes the second yarn over off

Marley bird, the finish shells? Are confusing me terribly Is there a diagram for that? The written part of finishing shells is confusing to me 😳😪 help!

Never skip checking gauge. I’m nearly to the end of the repeated series of rows and the size is no where near where it should be.

I am trying to make one for my sister, and the link says 6 balls of yarn. What is the total yardage per ball?

+Dawn Lietz Which yarn do you want to know about...the original yarn that was used or the Soft yarn I used for the sample? The Red Heart, Soft yarn has 256 yds.
