Hey there ladies! Did you know that you can tap on the top right corner of the video to slow it down? Just tap the 3 dots, then tap playback speed. You will then choose your preferred speed. Thanks so much for the fantastically clear and helpful instructions for this pattern. I made two of these shawls, one for my sister and one for my friend, and both shawls turned out great and have been much loved by their recipients. I can have a really hard time wrapping my head around written patterns without any visual aids, but your instructions gave me all the guidance I needed to understand the written pattern.

I just started this pattern. I also downloaded the written pattern to follow along. I am glad you did this video because thete is an error in Row 4 on the written pattern. In Row 4, it tells you to "skip ch-2 space" after you do the 5 dc's and ch-3's. This should say "skip ch-3 space." The second error says to "shell in next ch-3 space." The instruction should say " shell in next ch-2 space." This pattern has been out for quite some time. I am stunned that either no one noticed this error, or that it was never corrected in the pattern!

Jayden, I have to agree with your comment Marly does have that great gift for teaching. I've seen several patterns of this stitch but thought it was kinda difficult. After watching this first video I'm going to give it a try. This pattern reminds me of the Virus Shawl pattern. When I first tried it, it seemed complicated. But after I got going it turned out to be very simple because after the first 5 rows you could see the repeat. Thanks Marly for making this pattern easy for me.

Yes! The chart is helpful! You will see that the rep of rows 7-9 are shown on the chart in rows 10-12. So if you're following the chart and rely on the rows lining up, repeat rows 7-12 of the chart which will count as two full repeat s of 7-9... I hope that's clear 😁
There are a zillion creators out here walking you through various projects step by step on RUclips (which I think is great, btw, because different people might click with a different way of explaining something) and I feel like all of them can talk you through a specific project to varying degrees of success. But when I make something of yours, I feel like I learn how to make that specific item, but I also get to take away something, whether it's a technique or idea or concept or whatever, that is then part of how I crochet or think about crochet, and I can apply it to other things I make. You have a particular gift for that, and I think that's rare to see. Anyone can teach you to make a specific item but not everyone can make you a better crocheter WHILE working with you on that item.

@@MarlyBird aww, Marly, that sucks. You are absolutely a teacher and probably top 10 if not top 5 on all of crafting RUclips for exactly the reason I mentioned. You also just have this really genuine and kind presence and you're so encouraging and sometimes even when I'm not even crocheting, or I'm working on something totally different than what you're doing, I just put your videos on because I find them comforting. I recently moved to a new place where I don't know anyone and I feel isolated and depressed, which I know will get better with time, but I've been having a really rough time and your videos have helped a lot. Please never underestimate the value of your presence on this platform, or in this world.
I would have never tried this without your video, but I just finished row 5 & things are going well! (I'm kind of new at crochet, but this shawl is so beautiful I couldn't resist.) The video is fast for a beginner, so I watched it 3 times and almost had it memorized & then I started crocheting. You explained the pattern clearly & I'm actually enjoying the challenge. Thank you so much for the videos. Next stop: Studying part 2!

Finally!...someone who holds the hook pencil style. so many tutorials use knife style and it just seems so awkward to me. Also, you and I might be the only two who keep the hook turned downward. So many keep rotating the hook, which is wasted motion (when they could be crocheting!)

I really do love this shawl! I have been crocheting for many years and consider myself at an intermediate level. I have no issues following written instructions and I have created my own crochet patterns. Crochet charts are just not my thing, never have been and probably never will be. The written instructions has an error in Row 4. Struggling I thought is was me making the mistake I referred to your video to get past row 4 to row7 with the written instructions. Holy Cow you go fast! You explain things very well, but slow Down! I struggled more listening and following then I did with Row 4! BTW, I saw that a year ago someone found the error and it was to be corrected, it never was. Let's get this updated for other people! Might same them some time if they can't read charts, like me,or struggle to follow along in your video.

Thanks for making this so easy to understand. What I did to help me remember what row I was on to repeat---I wrote 7-8-9 eleven times and crossed it off when I completed a row.

Marly, it would be lovely to see the shawl laid out so that we can see it's final shape and size. Fabulous that the Red Heart yarn has so much wool in it so that the shawl will give warmth unlike the acrylic yarns.
It's a basic triangle :)
Well to be pedantic I think it unlikely. I found the garter stich shawl to be an obtuse triangle which didn't really fit me as I am so skinny and the ends were too long for a skinny person so I would prefer to stitch a shawl that was more acute and closer to an equilateral or even an isosceles triangle. :D
+Amanda Jane I can totally appreciate that. This shawl increases on the outside and center at the same rate so it is more equilateral :). You can always stop working the repeats sooner to make it smaller as well :) I hope that helps.

Hi Marly, I love your videos. The clarity is great. The speed happens to be just right for me but then again you have videos that suit all levels and speeds and that's why you're so awesome. Two things about this particular pattern on Red Heart.
I think that --
1) At the beginning of rows 6 and 8, "slip stitch to" the proper space is missing
2) In row 5, in the last ch-2 space it should be (shell, dc), and not just dc.
That was a great demo of the piece. It helps great for beginners like me. May I know how many yarn rolls I would require to have the big piece you showed in the video? Can I use two different colors,

This is a beautiful timeless design.
I recommend watching the video first not crocheting, then use the pattern not watching the video when you are crocheting so you can go at your own pace.
I'm not sure if I'm missing something in row 5, to row 6. When you stop row 5 it's finishes on a shell but when you start row 6 it looks like it's in to a chain? I'm fairly new but I managed fine until this point. It's probably just me but help would be great because it's lovely so far.

I’m not familiar with that yawn so I can’t say. But you could use It’s a Wrap yarn.

Or do I do row 10-12 after row 9 and only AFTER row 12 I repeat 7-9 12 times and then finish off?

You could use any fingering weight yarn.

You would get a different look but it would be pretty. You also wouldn't need to do as many repeats. If you choose to do that it might be a good idea to do a single crochet edging along the wingspan.

Can you steam block this item or do you recommend wet blocking?
Hi there! If you are using wool you can do either one. If you are asking me what I would do...I prefer to wetblock. I like to give the yarn a nice bath and wash off all the oils and dirt that is has accumulated while it was made/worked. Plus, the wool wash I use smells so good :-) I did a video here on the Marly Bird RUclips channel for blocking if you are interested.

Row 4 where you start to build the pineapple - you are saying "double crochet chain three" but the pattern states (sc, ch 3)
This was a mistake on the pattern and has been updated. It should be (DC, ch3). :)
I haven't seen the correction on the pattern.
