Being hyper vigilant to sounds, smells, and eyeballing gauges like a hawk is something I’m guilty of when I change something in my cars too lol. Great job on the trans rebuild man! Always a little prayer being said when doing that first startup and test drive afterwards.

I’m the same way. My Dad being a mechanic by trade for 40+ years had me growing up around cars and working on my own came with the territory. When I hear even the SMALLEST noise that I am not familiar with or a gauge does something it doesn’t normally do, his phone rings. He has grown accustomed to not answering my calls when he knows I’ve been working on something, because 99% of the time it’s me freaking out over nothing 😂

Ya I don't listen that hard and if it's still working Im good a while back I changed my rear diff fluid and there was chunks in the bottom but it was fine before and I didn't see what it was so I cleaned all that out and closed it and filled it back up and it was fine for a while but then a couple months ago it started skipping I was like yep that's the rear end and got a cheap lsd from Amazon and that was a whole nother ordeal but ya

If I remember from my time dealing with this trans as well as other 1 ton autos you are hearing fluid pressure. High pressure fluid can make a whooshing sound. Doubly so with the mods done here. Nothing to worry about.

When I bought my '05 Yukon XL 2500, it had the same low speed whine and I was certain my transmission was on its way to failure. That prompted me to call Jake's Performance and buy a new 80. Turns out the new one made the same sound, just a touch quieter. That was my third truck with the 80, but the first two had exhausts so loud I never heard the transmission 🤣
Also, I loved my firm shifts. It's like a good mule kick 😂

Next time you think of it hook up the scanner in hp tuners and go to the trans settings and set the force motor to max line pressure while you're sitting in the garage. it'll suprise you how loud the pump actually is at max pressure lol. if you don't have one invest in a line pressure gauge and verify before any test drives for peace of mind. definitely a good tool for troubleshooting as well. Looks like its working awesome nice job! They get easier every one you build...

First thing I would have done is put it to the floorboard. if there was no obvious loud sound or hiccup or clunker... I would say don't worry about it. Been wrenching for 17 years. All of my toys I have treated that way because you're going to beat the s*** out of them. And my train of thought is if they can't handle it now they're not going to handle it in a little bit and were just wasting time. I may not turn the Boost controller on for the first day or 2 but gate pressure is a bar so. Go running through the gears if it can handle it and temps stay good don't worry about it.

My 200r4 trans in my grand national has a transgo shift kit in it with all fresh clutches, sprag, overdrive basket, billet input and ststor maybe? I'm not a trans expert, but, with my stock converter it was unpleasant to drive. It shifted way too hard but i wanted it as i make about 550 torque and 400 hp. I didn't want any slipping of the clutches. When i went from the 1700 stock converter to my 3200 stall to match my new turbo, i cant tell it shifts when i leave it in drive. You can hear them snap into gear but you cannot feel it at all. However, Get on the converter and into boost??? Oh boy you can feel it bang the gears. Shift it manually and it bangs the gears even harder. So i think you will really like it when you get your new converter!

80Es are notorious for pump whine. I bought a used (previously rebuilt) unit and threw a circle d in it and had bad whine around idle. Drives mint and never has given me an issue, i gathered that might be the case from google. Also, highly recommend maxing all line pressures to 640 above 300ft/lbs for max clamping of the clutches at WOT.

I did a circle d converter, bought in april. So far it looks like it might have tossed metal into my trans cooler.
Issue, brand new 6.0 build, and it's killing thrust bearings.
This is a 6l80, i'm a bit north from you.
I'm about to toss a new thrust bearing in there with my trans coolers bypassed. If it frys again I'm doing a new trans pump, new crank, and bearings. Of course new fkn balance job on the rotating assy... arg!
Oh and the trash i found in the cooler, looked like welding trash, maybe circle d didn't clean the converter very well.
Or it broke loose from high converter pressures due to me cheaping out and not replacing my radiator like my gut told me to do.
    😑

Transmission rebuilds arent like engine rebuilds. If something was installed incorrectly or misplaced it wouldnt work off rip. Considering youre able to give it some power and it still shifts into all its ranges Id say its a success. In my experience a "break in" is about 1000 miles of regular driving. After that 1000 miles its good to change the fluid and inspect it. See what color it is and what kind of material may be in the pan. If its hella clean then youre good to go!

Often when you have had work done on a vehicle you hear a lot of new weird noises THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE 🤑
It’s the bane of all shops, you put air in a tyre and the client starts hearing rod knock and accuses you of wrecking their car.
I once put a new exhaust on my car went from single to dual and the same whirring noise started coming from my transmission. I don’t know if I simply never heard it before because it wasn’t there or that I could now hear it due to the new exhaust.

After a modification rebuild you will want to pull the pan and check the filter before you go much past 500 miles.
If you got anything wrong in the mods or re assembly you will notice abnormalities in the fluid and possibly evidence of damage in the filter. If you got something really wrong you won’t make it to 100 miles or possibly even out of the driveway.

Some converter designs just make noise. You may swap in the stock converter, not hear the noise and think the new converter is defective.
The Coan 10’ converter in my Olds has a whiring noise when you accelerate, it’s been in the car 20 years, been cut apart and rebuilt once over its life. Zero problems. Your probably a little jumpy bring your first overhaul.

Your not crazy ! Just more curious/cautions as it’s your first build
We have all been there I’m sure
And you’ve fixed the slight exhaust leak so it’s all got a different sound happening

My 4l80e with TransGo Kit and higher stall speed converter makes a whirring noise. I wouldn’t worry about it.

So I have a questions so I have a 1997 chevy suburban 2wd with a 5.7 vortec with an automatic 4l60e that started to go out about a year or two ago but when it was going out it started to read wrong on the speedometer so I went and got a used transmission put in it and it still read wrong well it went out in around 3 or 4 months do to sitting outside in the weather or maby from being out of an s10 so we had the original one rebuilt and we reused our censor that came with the original from the factory, transmission still reads wrong but if we put a new censor in it, it messes with the abs and won't shift so I don't know if there's anymore censors I can replace this all took place in a 2 to 3 year process and also when you really get on it it will either kick down to far and try to ride the gear out what seams to be a really long time or will start to jult over and over again and the faster you go the harder the jult and its a weird thing to explain like if you pump the gas paddle faster and faster what can I do

I have the answer to your problems: Turn the radio up.
I have the same sickness. Overly cautious and concerned. Some times it pays off. Some times it doesn't. I need to rebuild the 700r4 in my square body, not looking forward to it.

I want to swap my 1998 5 speed 2wd 4.2 f150 to a 4.6 where can I find info and parts id prefer to keep my transmission

    • @LawrenceTolman

not sure what would be required for that to be honest, but for parts your best bet would be to source a donor truck that has all the brackets, hardware, and wiring harnesses you'd need to make the conversion. it should be fairly plug and play if you have a complete donor to work with and rob parts from.
