TORQUE CONVERTERS | How they Work

- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- Torque converters use a simple idea to solve a complicated problem. This Science Garage goes over how a torque converter keeps your car from stalling, and how it can actually increase the torque coming from your engine.
We also look at the unique system in the Koenigsegg Regera- that uses a transmissionless direct drive torque converter variation to get over 250 MPH!
Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.
Some of our best videos ever are coming out soon, stay tuned so you won't miss a thing!

It clicked for me with that
I just love the reactions of Nolan
Indeed. 👍
Ya mean FANtastic?
And keep in mind that he can afford two fans.

"Vlad the Impeller." Well done.
sounds more gruesome than what he actually did

Bart and Zach make me feel like I can rebuild an engine. I can’t even build my credit.
have a credit and debit, use your credit for small purchases like gas or food and immediatly pay it off in full using your debit. thats how ya do it bud :)
Did anybody else catch the laugh from courage the cowardly dog at 5:36
XD
So amazing for somebody who can afford two fans to take so much time out of his day to explain torque converters to us.
Very informative video. Thanks!
Here are my notes I've compiled, please correct me if I am wrong:
Torque Converter:
Only found in Automatic Transmissions. Not found in manual.
Transfers power from the engine to the transmission.
Consists of a lock-up clutch assembly, impeller (pump), stator (reactor), and turbine.
Having the reactor in between the impeller (pump) and turbine makes it a torque converter.
The impeller (pump), strator (reactor), and turbine all have fan blades, which have transmission fluid running through
them spinning with Centrifugal force.
The impeller (pump) moving in circles flows the transmission fluid through the strator (reactor) to the turbine to make it spin too.
Without the strator (reactor), the impeller (pump) and turbine will not spin at optimal levels, but rather slow.
The impeller (pump) helps the turbine spin as the transmission fluid flows.
The stator (reactor) helps the transmission fluid flow from the turbine back to the imepller (pump) efficiently.
The stator helps increase torque big time by making the transmission fluid shoot at an angle speeding the flow speed up,
just like putting one's thumb over water flowing from a hose. This is viscous force.
The stator has a one-way clutch, making the the torque converter only spin when the car is moving.
To help the turbine spin faster, modern Torque Converters connect to a Lock-up Clutch, which is a shell-like component.
The Lock-up Clutch sits over the turbine and connects to the impeller (pump).
This allows for the turbine and pump to spin at the same speeds.
The Lock-Up Clutch only kicks in after every gear has occurred, and is equivalent to driving at 5-speed in a manual vehicle.
The torque converter connects between the motor and the transmission.
The impeller (pump) sits near to the motor and the turbine splines to the front of the transmission onto the input shaft,
which transfers power from the motor to the transmission.
Rotation from the engine transfers to the transmission via the turbine sitting on a central shaft.
A man made an amazing new design of the torque converter.

finally, somebody explains to me the thing I have always wanted to understand but never knew enough context. Cause like an electric motor is so simple, that's what I'm intimately familiar with being an eskate rider, combustion vehicles are so cool tho so many little things must be done to make them viable
Bring back this series!!
This man needs his own show lmao what a character
Flex plate bro, flex plate. Fly wheels bolt to clutches, not torque converters.
The point is, no it doesn't in the Regera because there are no gears.
SentsuizanXS still doesn’t change the fact he misinformed people by telling them a flywheel is in the equation. Automatic transmissions use flexplates which are thinner than flywheels.
Dont the othet companies call it somthing else?? As a Mopar guy, its a flex plate...but...
Jj Abatie no, they're flex plates no matter what car they're in.

I did not understand the book either my professor, I did it with the video. I appreciated it very much :) thanks
I miss this guy, he's the one that got me into Donut :(
Sooo Tru!!! He was one of the reasons I subscribed!!!
This video taught me more than a what I learn from a week of school while entertaining me. You seem like you’d be a cool guy to meet.
Sorry. But im still confused...
El_De_La_Lobo I'll simplify it for you bro
Just think of a chamber hooked up between the engine and the transmission or drive shaft
this chamber holds a turbine and inside of it, transmission fluid, some impellers/or blades
And a flex plate,
when the engine starts turning
it spins the firts impeller or blade
this causes that fluid to move and creates motion that will in turn spin the other impeller that's connected to the drive shaft or transmission, now the flex plate sits in between them, and it's purpose is to increase the speed and response at which the fluid moves as well as disengaging and re-engaging the impellers on to each other
the flex plate is added friction between the two impellers
when you let off the gas and brake this disengages the flex plate and in turn the impellers which lets the engine turn while the car is at a stop
and all of this takes place in a turbine
If anyone else sees this maybe they can correct what I said and make it easier to understand lol
I recommend you watch a video made around the 50's by Chevrolet about torque converters.
@@isrealdiaz3899 remove the word flex plate and replace it with stator and your explanation would be correct
This show is such a meme...

good explanation, would be useful if the stator function cane be demonstrated with the fan
