When comparing RS and Fox I always lean to Fox because of their history of; auto, moto and bike suspension experience. I think they are solid and ahead of the curve.
Gonna watch a few more times to really understand what you were saying. Was planning on getting an X2 for my Alchemy, and now I get the 2021 X2 stoked!
Basically, the high speed valving is acted on by higher *effective* spring force without adding deflection/preload to the spring itself. The adjustment ridge changes diameter, but not height.
VVC was something I heard with GRIP2 last year, but with the Fox 38 coming out all over the internets, this video has the right timing! yah, what's VVC indeed. really helpful! thank guys!
Thanks Jordy for this explanation. Have been trying to figure out the mechanism since it first came out. For some reason i thought the adjustment mimicked changing the diameter of the clamping shim. The actual execution is brilliantly simple.
So I’ve heard from a few people that the new 2021 with vvc HSC doesn’t have enough HSC even when closed. Is it better to stick with the 2020 grip2 if you are an aggressive rider. Or possible revalve the main shim stack on the 2021 dampener.
Congrats on VVC! Intriguing way to alter the damping curve. Changes the opening point of stack but also changes the spring pressure as well. The geek in me would love to see graphs! Add another talent onto your list? :)
Very interesting and well done video. I only have one question about the GRIP2 service (my fork is a FOX 36 Performance Elite @160mm). The official FOX video (like other tutorials) indicates to push the cartridge rod upwards for 3/4 of its travel in order to release the excess oil. In other videos some don't. By pushing the rod up so much, wouldn't you risk letting too much oil escape from the cartridge? However, I suppose it is used to avoid adding oil to the 40cc PTFE already included in the FOX reference table. Thank you so much! K
Fox is very good as I have run there coil shock for 3 years and its tuneable but don't be greedy on the adjusters or just get it revalved. The Fox 36 very good but converted to coil and was so much better than air.
Great video guys. Quick question - am I doing my X2 any harm by running it in "firm" mode on certain trails? Curious to know if it can do any damage to the shock if used regularly...
Maybe a question for Jordi: I’ve seen you do the quick rebound speed test by pushing down on the bars and seeing if the front wheel hops off the ground. But what’s with the “drop the rear wheel” test? Should it not rebound at all? How useful is this?
Interesting that no one ever seems to talk about the mid valve on mountain bike forks. Always rebound and base valve. Do any forks run check valves on the MV so the rebound adjuster only flows oil in the rebound direction and not on compression?
is there a difference, or what is the difference between a suspension setup that a normal rider would consider to be good, and a suspension setup that a good rider would consider to be fast? what are you looking for in a fast suspension setup?
Hi jordi can i ask you an question ? My fork that is an fit4 36 160mm kashima 2019 When i open up the rebound it reaches a time that the fork feels that its stiff but this feeling goes away when i back down one click my question is if this is normal thanks 😁 Loving the comeback of dialled 🤟😎👏
Hey jordi great stuff there. Just a quick question is a that custom 2021 dhx2 for tallboy 4, 190x50 or 7.5x2? Cant find that size on fox’s website. I have the same frame and is looking to convert it to coil. Thanks
Did i understand that right, that this wing basically acts like an additional leaf spring to set the opening pressure of the valve and it basically just changes the length of that leaf spring, therefore the needed pressure to open it...?
Quick question I got the 2021 fox 36 Factory grip 2 out of the box had issues with the HSR and LSR where it is kind of extremely tight to turn and it was moving the LSR with the HSR. The shop I bought it from had to send it back to Fox and Fox had to rebuild it because they did not have any of that same model in stock and now it's happening again after just a couple of light adjustments so I have to hold the LSR well adjusting the HSR. Any information is helpful
I noticed that the new 36 will go up to 160mm of travel and the 38 from 160 to 180mm of travel. So no 36 in 170mm anymore? Actually I read that the 38 is stiffer than the 36 which is more suitable for lighter riders. So for my weight and style of riding the 36 seems to be the way to go but I ride a 170mm fork on all bikes. I'm a little bit confused lol. Thanks for your answer.
what exactly is the difference between tunes on a 2021 Fox 38? stiffness of the little clock spring? orifice size? my 2021 commencal meta power 29 signature came with the 2021 fox 38 factory emtb tune; rebound is waaay too slow even with HSR & LSR dialed all the way out; while compression is waaay too light even with HSC & LSC dialed on the way in. 180 pound rider, 50-60 degree winter norcal riding, 100psi, 2 volume spacers. how do i fix this? i've heard the term 'reclock' but i don't know what that is. does fox ship forks dry to commencal, ie they might have put 20wt oil in the damper side instead of oem spec 5wt teflon infused???????????????
hi there folks @Fox suspension. I recently got hold of a Fox36 w/ the latest VVC damper and was wondering if the behavior I observed is normal for this new damper. When i fully turn the HSC/LSC to the close position, the fork still compresses as if there was no/minimal damping. in my 2019 Fox36 it's very noticeable even when just wound half way, you can feel the damper working. can fox confirm whether VVC is indeed working this way or is my fork damper defective. appreciate if you can comment, thanks in advance.
Jordi looks to be such a mint julep guy. In my mind thats all he drinks. In a metal cup of course. What will the retail price be on the new valve for a 40?
So i got a quick question, arent the new 36,38&40 kind of over-ingieured for a normal, day to day mtb rider? I didn't look at the price list but isn't all of this going to make those suspensions enormously expensive for a rider who doesnt need so much dialing?
In my opinion in #dialed guy the #ridefox Jordi Cortés thes new grips damper of the new forcka 38 of the. Fox bike's. 🗣️yyaaCammone so good saluds a the guy #foxdialed. Of Chile 🇨🇱 🤘😀🤘 ♥️ 💯
I feel the same sorta, i got a fox factory 36 grip 2 2019/2020. But when they say you gotta check the air pressure before every ride with the new fork, thats kinda turns me away from it.
I love the fact Fox is willing to let you explain these details! Love the explanation, as always, keep up the great work!
I feel like because they have the patent they can have a bit of freedom to share info
Can you guys make a video talking about the RAD program? How the 38 came to be and a bit about your prototyping process. Loving the content!
Great job at explaining suspension again Jordi! High speed compression and rebound is adjusted by VVC. Nice!
Jordi explains everything so easy about suspension tuning
After watching this I feel confident enough to go build my own in my bike shack instead of having to buy one....THANKS!

These videos, and listening to Jordi has helped me immensely to set-up my SB150. LOVE IT, keep the videos coming!

Awesome share of info, thanks and please make more of these type of vids seeing as you're at home now and have the time😉
Great work guys even in this strange times. Thanks for that. Have a good quarantine. Can’t wait to ride the ne Grip 2 😁👍
I don’t need a 38 being a lightweight old and slow dude that doesn’t put much force on anything but I really want one now.
Just make your own 38 stickers & save $1000 plus will fit any forks & any travel!

Would love to see what you guys think of vorsprung's review of the 21 damper.
Fox suspension is always the best
Thanks! I enjoyed the disassembly and explanation.
Great video guys. Quick question - am I doing my X2 any harm by running it in "firm" mode on certain trails? Curious to know if it can do any damage to the shock if used regularly...
Good question. I’d like to hear a answer also. I assume it’s fine as long as you’re not on gnarly drops or casing the shit out of it regularly.
Thank you Jordi!
Very comprehensive Jordi! Thanks
On the next episode, can you talk a little about what's new on the DPX2 2021 shock?
need more details. please disasemble whole thing and talk through how it works during different compresions and where does oil flows and how it flows
Amazing breakdown and explanation!
Excellent vid guys! Perfectly explained. Cheers
So I'm revisiting this video after the new GripX2 damper came out where they removed VVC on the compression side... if it's better, why get rid of it?
Maybe a question for Jordi: I’ve seen you do the quick rebound speed test by pushing down on the bars and seeing if the front wheel hops off the ground. But what’s with the “drop the rear wheel” test? Should it not rebound at all? How useful is this?

I had the same question - also is the 36 at 140mm? They only make the new one in 150-160 I believe. Can you get a 140 air shaft in this new 36?
Mike DeMille based on the lost co bike shop here on yt, mike said that the 2021 36 can still go from 130-160mm
Did i understand that right, that this wing basically acts like an additional leaf spring to set the opening pressure of the valve and it basically just changes the length of that leaf spring, therefore the needed pressure to open it...?

Hey! I just got a new Fox 34 with a GRIP2 damper. The HSR has no clicks and spins infinitely. Is my damper broken? Kinda bummed out. Thanks!
can you describe differences between 2020 and 2021 dhx2 shocks? thanks, Jordi, much appreciate!
thank you!
Hi Jordi! What is your comment about the new 2021 GRIP2 being under damped according to Vorsprung? Is it true?
hi there folks @Fox suspension. I recently got hold of a Fox36 w/ the latest VVC damper and was wondering if the behavior I observed is normal for this new damper. Great vid, love the technology.
So what the difference betwen preload the spring valve and leverage methode?
love it !
So this is essentially a better way of using high speed and low speed rebound controls or am I missing the point?

Is the new damper compatible with the older forks?
Honestly surprised this basic design wasn’t picked up before fox got the idea and patented it.
Freaking brilliant people
Is that a coil shock, on a SC tallboy?👀
I think that's a nomad. Pretty certain that a DHX2 wouldn't fit on a tallboy.
Yes that is a Tallboy. He said ina previous video he was getting ~120 in the rear. So maybe it has a slightly longer stroke than stock
Can we drop this new damper into a 2020 36?
But what does VVC stand for? Variable Valve Control?
They will have redesigned it by August
will this damper fit in previous 36 forks?
I have the same question

Very trick design. Who thinks this stuff up?
I find this stuff really interesting as an aspiring engineer. (I'm 16)
There is only one real jordi
It would nice if it actually worked.. they should tell you if you run of a certain PSI.. it's worthless
Care to elaborate??? I’m looking at a 49 w/ this damper currently…and I’m heavy…and run high PSI.
I'm so sad I missed this tech when I bought my bike 4 months ago. Jealous.
Jeff French always wait a year, new stuff aren’t always reliable. At least with the old stuff you know its going to work.
