  • For 2019, Fox offers two different dampers in their Float 36 forks; the GRIP2 and the FIT4.
    Although the GRIP2 damper is brand spankin' new and feels amazing, I believe it may not be the better choice for some riders.
    Check out the video to figure out which will be better for you while you're either upgrading your current fork or building up a new bike with some sweet Fox suspension!

    Before watching this video, I had my heart set on getting the Grip2 damper, but now I’m not so sure. My current fork (34 Rhythm) has the Grip damper (basically only a lockout lever and rebound adjust) and I’m pretty happy with it. I mainly want Factory for the lighter weight as well as to match to the Kashima of my DPX2 shock, so I think I may just go with the Fit4

    • @That.Guy.
      @That.Guy. 10 месяцев назад

      I just bought the 36 in 150mm with fit4 because bizarrely fox wont sell the grip2 as 150mm but they told me i can buy it as a 160mm and then get a shorter air piston to reduce the travel to 150mm. This makes no sense.

I think I will be more than happy with any Fox 34 FIT4/GRIP2 model I will choose as my upgrade. Great video! I've got the Fit4 from 2018, but it has the same HSC, LSC dampening control as the Grip2 in your video (just not the independant hi/lo rebound adjuster), so I guess my fork is for the rider between A and B!

    • @TheLostCo
      @TheLostCo  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Kit! The damper you have is referred to as their FIT HSC/LSC. This damper has been phased out to the new GRIP2 damper which is the upgraded replacement for that damper in the Fox lineup.
      That damper was great too! If you ever feel like you'd like to have that adjustable high-speed rebound, you can easily swap out your damper with a GRIP2 which you can order from me @ misterlost.com/forks/2019-fox-36-grip2-damper-upgrade-kit

    Good vid. Rider A vs B is a solid philosophy to start with. I've tried both forks and really liked both. Where I believe Grip2 is better is with Big brands that are just borrowing geometry trends from niche brands & haven't thought through the overall kinematics & thus extra adjustment is well appreciated or just super OCD Type A riders. Fit4 is terrific for good niche brands because the geometry & kinematics is painstakingly thought through. For example Pivot or Transition, loved Fit4 on those bikes, yet those brands really think through everything & thus you pay more but get more which equals less to think through on settings vs. big brands. My 2 cents. Totally OK to disagree cause if you do...just means you,'re passionate abt Mtb 🤘

    • @TheLostCo
      @TheLostCo  5 лет назад +29

      HAHA! The answer is: because you are a mountain biker, you are naturally a tinkerer and are always considering how different things feel on the trail! Thats actual why I enjoy bikes so much, because its s super personal feeling between you and your bike. Your car might have worn out tires, suspension is beat down, etc, but you don't exactly have that much of a connection between your hands, brain, and the vehicle. With a bike, though, there's not as much going on as with a car and you can feel every little difference.
      That was a long answer to a short question! 😂

    Same with my Fox 40 fit 4. I do not care that much. My type is like B, i used to be A and loose a lot of time with settings. But then i understood what i want from the fork. Not to change the settings on every damn trail. It's somewhat fine, could be better of course. But it's not worth my time, i am not a pro. I am still fast on the trails and have fun. This is why i do this hobby, FOR fun. Not to loose too much time with settings, i would rather spend that time riding and having fun.

    thanks I currently ride a 7 years old cross-country fully home upgraded to fox factory 34 120mm fit4 (to keep the original 120-120 geometry) but looking at an emtb I definitely want more travel and smoothing, hearing what you say I would not want a grip2 on a muscular bike as the locked and float settings are game changers for pedaling power did 60 miles 4770ft recently worst slope was 18% you do not want pedal pumping on that uphill >< for a muscular bike used to climb mountains on road or hard terrain and descent on wherever I want grass dirt off trail (I bike hike if you get what I mean) i deflated slightly below my recommended fox weight pressure, lock or float to ascend with rebound to stiff then unlock all and set rebound to fast for descent it's not bad for cross country, at recommended fox pressures I get very good pedalling uphill but the (4770ft) downhill was rough on my rear and shoulders, I can easily guess the high low speed settings of the grip 2 would help fix my too harsh too soft problem I'll keep that in mind for the emtb and will watch your setup guide thank you very much

  • @TheSHARCRASH
    @TheSHARCRASH 3 года назад

    It's not the right description. Many people think Grip2 is an upgrade compared to FIT4 whereas both are as good as each other. The difference is just in the way you can tune their settings. FIT4 is adaptable on the fly (AKA on-ride) for different ride types via 3 modes on-ride + 2 off-ride setting (LSC and rebound), it takes all its universe when used with a remote + fork adaptor. Though you cans still fine tune a FIT4 via a suspension service. Grip2 cannot be set on-ride (neither remote possibility), so only off-ride, but offers more settings (only one extra) and finer tuning dials, the settings are the LSC, HSC, LS rebound and HS rebound.
    In the end, this means rider A + Grip2 is more into tuning it's fork and then forget it which means the way he tuned his fork is an all rounder for all situations, rider B + FIT4 is more into adapting to terrain and type of rides with modes Open for descends/tough, Mid for general pedalling, Locked for top pedalling, super accelerations, etc (or indeed just easier tuning but this is secondary).

    I am a tinkerer by heart but since i don't have the money to invest in high end bikes which comes with high end suspension am i limited to the fairly limited range of adjustments of the entry level forks and shocks. I'm currently running an almost bone stock trek remedy 7, I have only swapped out the tires. so i have learnt to go for what feels good and stick with that.
    but I hope that my next bike in like 5-10 years time will be a higher end piece of equipment. i'm planning on building up a frame to my specs so I can save where I don't feel as much difference and shell out on things like the suspension and rims

Orange doesn't go with my color scheme. I would upgrade to the grip 2 but not on my priority list unless I find it cheap enough.

    GRIP is A LOT more repair/rebuild and service friendly than FIT4 imo. Previously GRIP was like cheaper fit4 alternative damper built for easier service (float 32SC etc.). But now i was actually surprised when i heard that GRIP 2 has MORE adjustments...But anyway - these forks cost insane money unless you buy them with a bike so most of the people get what they get anyway :D

    fit4 rider on 120mil 34 here. Now that we can upgrade to grip2 too, this has become a question. Honestly, I think I have much more to gain by tuning the spring rather than changing the damper. Look at you, Vorsprung Luftkappe! Should make it more subtle off the top and give mid-stroke support. I tried relying on the damper for support, but it just makes the whole thing feel sluggish and not active at all.

    Very good video. I have Fit4 inside my Fox 38 160mm. After 300km I have notice interesting behavior: riding down hill above 25-30 km / h suddenly damper start to be perfectly smooth and feels like flowing (perfect damping, perfect control). In opposite with low speed , below 25km/h feels less comfortable.
    Wondering it is wrong adjustment of my Fit4 or this is just normal behavior of Fit4. To increase low speed comfort/control I should change for Grip2?

    Nice review. I have the Fit4 on a 34FOX and love it and pretty much just set it and forget it. I only weigh 160 and my trails are not that aggressive plus it’s on a hardtail. I’m actually building another hardtail SS and see the new 34FOX has the Grip2 option. I don’t know if I would notice the marginal improvement on a Grip2 so I’ll probably just get another Fit4.

    Good intel! I have a GRIP2 Fox 34 (back)ordered for my (backordered) Ibis Ripley and (backordred) i9 wheels. For the pavement miles to get to the park, and fire road climbs, I'm not sure I can live without matching 3 position levers front & rear

    • @topjmmi
      @topjmmi 2 года назад

      How did you make out with the GRIP2? I just got my Ripley with the same fork and am overwhelmed with the adjustability of this thing vs the shock. So far just 20% sag H&L comp wide open, H&L Rebound 1/2 way out is pretty darn good lol but I'll be fiddling with this thing forever I can see🧐.

      @@topjmmi I got cold feet and changed my [back]order to a Fit4 with 3 position lever. Though Fox stopped calling it Climb, Trail, Descend that's how my rides go and it works for me. I haven't found out what I'm missing

    most adjustable, I beg to differ. If anything its only equal to or a little less than the cane creek Helm. The Helm forks has an adjustable negative air chamber. fox or Rock shox do not have that. Yes, it only has 1 circuit for rebound adjust. But it also has a built in token system. You don't have to drop an extra $150 for the MRP ramp control. You also have companies like MRP and DVO having bleed valves in the system which decreases the amount of services it would need.
    so unless Fox has an adjustable negative air chamber, built in token system, or a bleed valve. I highly doubt its "the most adjustable fork on the market."

    • @TheLostCo
      @TheLostCo  5 лет назад +1

      Sorry, I meant that the GRIP2 is most adjustable damper. Also, the GRIP2 damper is a self-bleeding damper as well.
      No need for a negative air chamber when the EVOL and Debonair works as good as they do!

      do you have any suggestions how to make my fit4 170mm fill more like RC2? does tokens or different oil than 20wt gold help? i have a weight of 104kg, medium fitness for my 192cm, ride bikeparks and use 6 rebound strokes instead of recommended for my weight 3 strokes, others open/open, 1 token and still fill its underdamped. please help!

    • @Dridgeism
      @Dridgeism 5 лет назад +1

      Switching to a heavier weight oil can slow things down and increase damping, although I'm personally not sure as to what specific options there are. Run your low speed compression nearly closed, I'm 92kg kitted usually had it around 4 clicks out from closed (out of 18). Would also go up to at least 3-4 volume spacers for your weight. Although it may honestly just be worthwhile to invest in a grip 2 damper...having the high-speed adjustments has been game changing for some of my friends who are similar in size to you.

    Becouse i come from Motocross background im very used to high and low speed both compression and rebound so this fork would be awesome for me!

    This is a great guide.
    I have a question about how this relates to the 2019 Fox 34 forks. On the 36 forks, the Grip2 is more expensive than the Fit4, which is totally understandable. But, on the 34, the Grip fork costs less than the Fit4. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Is the Grip Damper on the 34 fork anything like the Grip2 on the 36 fork?
    I'm definitely a Type B rider. I currently have a Float 32 CTD on a 2015 Trance 2 and I'm thinking I might update it. I like being able to lock out the fork, so it seems like the Fit4 would be best for me.
    Thoughts?
