    Omg genius and so easy to follow instructions. Truly thank you, from one newbie to sewing these tips are invaluable. I even shared at my beginner's embroidery class, nearly all had not known these techniques. So a big thank you from them too 🙌🏻👏🏻😁

    I’ve done a lot of basting but hadn’t seen this technique before! I didn’t know how to do the second one. Your directions are the first I understood. Thank you so very much.

    I learned how to knot my thread from my mother, once around my forefinger slip it off and twist between my thumb and forefinger. It works for me, but you're never too old to learn something new and it looks so easy a child would soon pick it up. I think in this day and age where needlework (and home economics) isnt taught in school like in our day, these nifty notions are ideal for the novice sewer. Thanks for sharing Laura 😊

      Mary Phillips This was how I learned, too. I do find, however, that this can cause the thread to twist back on itself and sometimes that twist never goes away. This can result in thread tangles as one continues sewing. I learned the second method at a women's workshop several years ago and like it (when I remember which way to set it up for the twists) ;)

      That's how I learned to knot thread too! I still do it that way.

      My gramdmother taught me that way many many years ago. I still do it.. Habit I guess but its always worked for me. I will use the second method if I'm doing embroidery tho. Great tips for anyone that's learning!

    Thanks. I'll try the needle method. Was using my finger, but the smaller needle seems a better idea.

    Good tips, TU! 2:23 is the time stamp for a 'regular' knot. Wrapping instead around the needle produces a much tidier knot than wrapping around the fingertip as our mothers taught us. I solved the awful tangling issue I was having with the thin, slippery beading thread I'm using by putting the end of the thread near the eye of the needle, instead of in the middle of it, and then wrapping (I need a big knot so a bead doesn't slip off).

    Thanks, Laura. I learned the second knotting method at a women's workshop several years ago but I usually forget which way to set it up for the twists around the needle. Your demonstration has ended my confusion ... point the thread end and the tip of the needle toward each other. I don't believe they explained that one can do this same type of knot at the end, so I learned something new today. Your use of the giant needle and heavy thread was excellent ... like putting a zoom lens on without the hassle. Now I need to go back and figure out how to order an autographed copy of your brand new, first ever book - how exciting! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

    The knots are a much better technique than what I have used all these years. Question: the last few years I've been having trouble with my thread tangling and knotting as I'm sewing a seam by hand. Do you know what I am doing or what I could do to correct this?

    • @lw7967
      @lw7967 4 года назад +1

      That happens sometimes but get yourself a product called Thread Heaven. You just pull your thread thru it & it coats it so it doesn't tangle as much. Less breakage too. Totally invisible.
      There is also a wax product to pull your thread thru. It really helps a lot! Good Luck!

    • @newbeequilter
      @newbeequilter 4 года назад +1

      @ Cheryl Gray - It might be related to the direction of how the thread is coming off the spool in relation to how you're threading your needle. Check out the video titled, "A Secret to Threading a Needle" from the YT channel, "Threads".

    • @SewVeryEasy
      @SewVeryEasy  4 года назад +1

      There are a few things that can cause it to tangle first is the thread is too long and second ... with the motion of our hand we twist the needle in between our fingers and thumb. The needle being round rolls around as we are putting it into our fabric. We roll the needle to get it into the right position. This is very hard to avoid. Sew for a few minutes and then see watch and see if you were doing it. This rolling of course will roll the thread from behind and that's sometimes causes twists. It is such a small thing but can turn into a big thing. And as others have said yes waxing your thread is also very helpful, it does help the thread not tangle as much. I hope these things help and thanks for asking

    This was a great video.. I've been seeing for a couple of years, and didn't know these methods for starting and trying off . I'd just lick my fingers and wrap the thread around one finger and rub the fingers together and pull on the thread. You've shown me a better way. Thank you.

    What do you prefer for basting? I’ve tried pinning, fuseable batting but Haven’t found a method I love. Could you please make a video about different basting methods and their pros and cons? I’ve yet to find one that explains the different ways and why people like them. I’m still quite new to quilting

      Are you talking about the different ways of basting the quilt layers together? I think that is a great idea. I will plan on doing a separate video on all. As I think one video would be way too long to show all of them. Thanks for the idea
