I was surprised that the shops on the base were priced in Dollars not Pounds. I would have thought it would have been easier to have everything priced in Pounds, so when you leave the base and go into the town you would have Pounds and you would understand the prices better.
I don't know if its still true but some servicemen never went outside the wire for their whole deployment. It's an American thing, they are afraid of the food, water and apparently the air. How many people are still wearing "compliance masks" in 2022?
@@tjp353 Yep happened to me on several occasions. I live near Lakenheath and it is not unusual to meet a vehicle trotting along on the wrong side of the road outside of the base! Usually when it's quiet and not much is on the road to inspire the senses!
When my grandson did his tours in Afghanistan the British military had to pay in American dollars in stores
Used to have a neighbour who was in the forces. Often used to bring us some tasty foody bits from the base! 😋

It often rains in Britain

US bases in the UK have almost the same status as an embassy. If you’re on the base, you’re in the states. They even drive on the other side

@@tjp353 not really, as that happened on a British public road, not inside a US base, and then suddenly she was on the diplomatic immunity list
