    Contrary to the audio, the V5C is not a bill of sale. Why? Because the V5C only shows The Registered Keeper. The person responsible for the vehicle and its use. It does not prove ownership. The sale contract document is what does that. It can be a simply worded and signed contract proving the sale. The DVLA is only interested in who is responsible for the vehicle day-to-day and the police have access to DVLA records.

    Some things worth noting, depending on which state you’re from:
    You cannot turn at any red light at all, ever.
    Seat belts are compulsory in all parts of the car, and if you or your passenger are found without one, the fine is about £600.
    Mobile phones cannot be used while driving and there are strict penalties.
    Give way to the right on a roundabout.
    Car seats or booster seats are compulsory and must meet safety regulations for here, not for USA. In general, our rules are stricter than USA.
    If you’re over the speed limit and you get caught, you will be in trouble. On a British license, you will have to pay £100 for first minor offense, and do a 3 hour road safety course. After that, you’ll get a fine and 3 points on your license. Get 12 points and you lose your license.
    Don’t be tempted to bring over your American vehicle. It’s easier to drive on the left with a car designed for that.
    The biggest vehicle most people drive here is a Range Rover, and most people have small or mid-sized cars. It’s very uncommon to see an American pickup as they’re far too inconvenient. Not only are our roads narrower, but our parking bays are much smaller too.

    "We don't call it a "MOT", we literally spell it out (M.O.T) so it becomes as 3 syllable word. You will never actually hear anyone say "MOT" as it is written. BTW, it stands for "Ministry of Transport".

    Traffic police cars have ANPR cameras (Automatic Number Plate Recognition). These are linked to a national database of registered vehicles also including details of: road tax, insurance, M.O.T. and registered vehicle keeper's driving licence. An alarm goes off when a number plate is read if any of these details have expired/not held. If the police establish this is the case, then the car is seized, and it costs a lot of money to get it back. (The driver will also be prosecuted for no insurance or M.O.T. etc.)

    • @willswomble7274
      @willswomble7274 11 месяцев назад +1

      The ANPR cameras are also on poles at the side of the road near important junctions, handy for tracking burglars, drug dealers etc.

    Although Americans with licenses can drive UK cars, they are most likely not insured for test drives (unless they already have UK motor insurance in their own name). Motor insurance is mandatory in the UK even for test drives. Some sellers may have insurance for any driver, but most do not.

    Welcome to the UK. You're not too far from Thetford, birthplace of Thomas Paine, and Hingham which is where Lincoln's ancestors came from. A note on our roads, when they were originally built the most common transport was the horse and cart. You don't have to have your insurance docs etc with you when driving but it does make things easier if you get stopped. Enjoy your time here.

    Normally, a US driving licence can be used for 12 months from arrival in the UK. Thereafter (non-visiting-forces possibly excepted) this ceases to be valid, and domestic law applies: you have to get a provisional UK licence and abide with its conditions, then pass a UK driving test and obtain a UK licence. UK driving standards are higher than those in the USA.

    If your car is seized by the police, you pay to get it back. It is only crushed if you don't want to pay for it back again or you can't afford to get it back again. They don't just crush it. The V5 isn't proof of ownership. It's a record of the registered keeper. Your receipt if buying from a garage is proof you bought it. For people moving here they can read the Highway code in advance if they are anxious about driving. Generally people from the US find our roads narrow and roundabouts take some getting used to.

    That was a fascinating video. I didn't realise that US military personnel had to get another driving licence whilst in the UK. My British licence is always accepted when I drive in the USA as a visitor. I suppose that it would depend on how long you are staying.
    If you had bought an American car, I would highly recommend Mildenhall Auto Centre for maintenance, as they can get spares needed very quickly. They have done good work on my Chevy & Dodge vehicles in the past.
    Angels Cafe, next door to the Auto Centre does Tex-Mex food if you like that.
    I hope you and your family enjoy your time in Britain, but don't forget that there is no turn on a red traffic signal here, unfortunately.

    The most important thing to remember is the driving on the left. Many of the roads around the bases are kind of narrow and it's easy to park up somewhere and when you drive off again, habit sees you on the right side of the road. It happens a lot with European tourists driving hire cars around where I live.

    I have noticed in your video that a car coming the other way had stopped and flashed their headlights at you. You, politley waited for them to go first. The point is, if you have someone flash thier headlights at a junction or where you would normaly give way (yield), then they are saying 'ok matey, you go first..' they are giving way to you.. It's an unofficial way of letting the other driver go first

    • @_starfiend

      No. Someone flashing their lights is just someone flashing their lights. It has no meaning and can be VERY easily misinterpreted. You should never assume you understand what is meant, or even that it was meant for you. Serious accidents happen that way.

    Welcome to the UK it is good to hear someone actually informing your fellow Americans on our road signs one thing I would recommend is purchase a highway code book it not only tells you all the rules of the road but also has pictures of all the road signs and vehicle markings with a description of what they mean you can purchase one from a W H Smith's, all car's after a certain date must have Isofix built in it is a universal child seat fitting in Europe.
    Looking at your vehicle Isofix is fitted and can be found on the two outer seats the vehicles owner's manual a will tell you how to set it up all children under a certain age and height will need a child seat, it is the drivers responsibility to make sure that any children are properly restrained at all times the police will stop any vehicle if they suspect a child is not wearing their seatbelt.
    Your children will love the UK as the run-up to Christmas starts, stay safe.

    Most important thing to check when buying a used UK car is to check for rust especially underneath. Most of the winter the roads are loaded with salt, along with the wet climate rust is normal especially with Fords

      Indeed, much of Suffolk is quite flat too, so you get quite a bit of sea air fairly far in land (not the same place, but still East Anglia, one time I was visiting a friend on the campus of the University of Essex - about 20 miles inland - & I could taste salt in the air); living in Brighton for university wrote-off my previous car, which before I bought it had been kept in Clacton (still ran lovely, but the underpan was so rusted that it would’ve cost more to repair than the car was worth so I just had to scrap it).

    • @willswomble7274
      @willswomble7274 11 месяцев назад +1

      Fords and Vauxhalls used to rust 50 years or more ago. Since The 1970's, manufacturers have all sussed and pretty much designed out the various reasons vehicles rust. Just stand at the roadside, you will almost never spot a rust heap nowadays in UK or EU.

    British hospitals spend a lot of money every year treating people who have been in car accidents. These accidents solely occur because of drivers so British insurance premiums include a share of those costs. A non British insurer won't be paying those costs so my guess is that American companies insurance is not valid in the UK.

They tend to stay within the US base at Lakenheath for entertainment, shopping, etc They'll take a trip to Cambridge every few months and live in a village close to Lakenheath, usually Red Lodge. It's a shame as they are surrounded by beauty. Norwich, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, a walk along the seafront at Gorleston, Thetford priory, the broads at Wroxam, Wells next the sea. All within an hour of Lakenheath.

    Things that might be of helpf with your stay in Britain . It is much farther north the many people realize, so in med summer it gets light at 4:30 am and dark at 9 pm . In med winter it's not light till 8:30 am and dark at 4 pm . When the pandemic happen , people did not like to touch money other people had handled. So we got in the habit of using tap and go Debt or Credit cards . e use them a lot even for very small items . They may be used for transactions up to £100 .
    The Police in the UK are very different to some parts of the US , they are polite friendly and helpful . Do so enjoy your visit , here but please , please get out and explore there is so much to see ! There is a little booklet called , " The Highway code ", printed by the government . Which only costs about $5 . Which is a gold mine of good advice on how to drive over here .Including the dreaded roundabout ! :-) A one hundred miles in the US is nothing , over here it is a great deal . Even on Motorways if you average 40 miles in a hour you are doing well . Also you will find that most people here are helpful and will help if you ask them. Do have a great time over here , and we wish you and your family well !

      Not harsh at all. MOTs are mandatory and done to ensure the safety of all road users, without this system all sorts of deathtrap old bangers would be on the roads and putting other road users in danger. Also, without an up-to-date MOT a driver's car insurance is invalid so if they cause an accident the innocent third party is unable to claim back damages. The government set the cost for MOTs and the current cost for a car is £54.85, which is due annually once the car is over three years old (costs for any work required to pass the MOT are additional). If someone can't afford that once a year they shouldn't own a car!
