Unpopular opinion: I like Alien Resurrection. This movie showed us so many new things we had never seen before! The way the aliens were completely at home underwater was shocking to me. Makes me think there might be oceans on the alien home world... And what about the astute intelligence the aliens demonstrated in the lab? And aliens being held captive in a lab! I also liked the newborn... It had horribly expressive eyes that looked so sad when it was dying. Plus, I like the alien abilities Ripley inherited from the queen. It made her seem like a superhero, to me.

    • @BMakabre
      @BMakabre 3 года назад +11

I like Alien: Resurrection - for those same reasons. The underwater scene was amazing, the lab escape - how they used their blood to effect. I wished the Newborn survived to maturity (it was the equivalent of a Chestburster) it would have likely been bigger than a warrior (plus it might have had an almost human calculation to its actions as an adult) still the emotions it displayed in the film - especially the toddler temper tantrums it displayed with it's strength. The music score in the film was very atmospheric and good. Casting all round was brilliant. I have to say - Sigourney Weaver's basketball throw that was so brilliant they were lucky to catch that take (almost didn't due to everybody's surprise to that shot).

We already knew that the Aliens were intelligent. We learned that from moments in the (much better) first two films. They were able to recognize the purpose of power generators and elevators and use that knowledge to their advantage. Ripley having abilities is certainly an interesting direction to take, but it kinda goes against the point of what Alien started. It was about normal, blue-collar, working-class people encountering an organism more sinister and dangerous than they had ever imagined. Ripley was never some magical, Mary Sue-esque superhero facing intergalactic threats. She was just a normal person, trying desperately to survive and prevent the danger from reaching her ever again. Now she’s half-Xenomorph and has superpowers, which really takes from that in my opinion. If she really wanted to, she could probably just straight up fight the Aliens. Rip off their heads and kill them. And honestly, the Newborn just looks ugly and goofy to me. It’s roaring and screaming rather than making the horrific screeches and clicks that we know the Xenomorph for. It’s just kinda stupid.

While I was not a huge fan of Alien: Resurrection, I did always find it noteworthy that H.R. Giger described it as "excellent." It is certainly the most Gigeresque of the films in its aesthetic whole, even more so than the original film, and Giger asserts as much. Ultimately, I think that the movie had a lot of unreached potential.

I've always felt there's a good movie tucked away somewhere in Alien Resurrection. Parts of it I really enjoy, especially the genetic crossover between Ripley and the Alien. The problem for me comes from parts like the one where Dan Hedaya reaches to the back of his head, pulls out a piece of his brain and stares at it. That will never not be stupid. Too many one-liners and nonsensical moments like that really hurt the film. I still enjoy it sometimes, but I have to be in the right mood where I don't care too much about all the dumb moments.

Not gonna lie: I was glad A.C. Crispin took over for Resurrection's book adaption. Even if the film bombed at the box office, Crispin gave me the emotional closure I was DEPRIVED of in Alien 3's movie AND its book adaption by Foster. My beef with Foster has always been his narrow focus on the action-and-sequence of film events; he RARELY (if ever) takes creative liberties to expand on a character's thoughts and put emotional weight on certain scenes. Everything is very by-the-numbers and, as a result, I feel nothing. This issue became more apparent to me when he wrote Alien 3's book adaption, where the passing of Newt and Hicks comes and goes like a fart in the wind. Apparently, Crispin must've realized this as well because Resurrection is riddled with beautiful emotional moments related to Newt (and even my boi, Hicks!). it's as if Resurrection wanted to address all the things Alien 3 ignored with regards to Ripley and her emotional connections (which is the WHOLE point of her arc!). I remember reading Resurrection and expecting an action-packed, by-the-numbers book again, only to be hit with the fucking FEELS.

    I'm a bit conflicted myself.
On one hand, all this new information gives us a vastly more complete look at Ripley 8, and greatly contextualizes all her feelings, thoughts, and actions throughout the film. Knowing that scenes like Ripley cutting the power, caring for Call and the newborn, being conflicted over the former's existence as an android and the latter as a xenomorph byproduct, etc. WERE meant to be extensions of her memories, is brilliant and makes me feel like an idiot for not putting the pieces together before seeing this video. It even gives me a fair bit more respect for Alien Resurrection that it managed such subtle storytelling (even if a some of it is bogged down with dumb or goofy scenes).
OTOH, let's not forget Alien vs. Predator fell deeply into the trap of reminding us too much of the previous, better films. You do that enough and eventually the viewer would rather just watch THOSE movies instead. And as such, I can completely understand why they referenced them as little as possible.
Perhaps there's a good middle ground it could've tread the way Aliens and Alien 3 did, referencing the previous films just enough to get the point across without beating you over the head with it, but given there's already a good 10 or so minutes at the start of the movie dedicated to retreading old ground as it is, complete with an unsubtle Aliens quote, I'm not sure the filmmakers of this particular entry were up to the task. And if they weren't, they made the right decision to leave the idea well enough alone once the movie gets rolling.
Alien Resurrection is not a great film IMHO, but it's absolutely not garbage either, and unlike AvP it at least isn't afraid to stand on its own.

Then when it gets hit by what's his face it's barely hanging on Christie's boot by one finger so he just cuts himself loose and commits suicide. Just because he got acid on his face and arm? Wtf? Or because the crippled guy was losing his grip? Wtf? All he had to do was swing back his arm and grab the railing. Was he killing himself because he was so vain that he got a little disfigured? Sure, they're not "bad" films when judged solely on their own merit, but as ALIEN movies they couldn't live up to the bar set by the predecessors. Even Prometheus and Covenant were disappointing. If there ever is another feature film - meticulous care and love & respect for the original material needs to be put in. Alien: Isolation was a labor of love and it greatly paid off as it's the best Alien-related story released since Aliens.

A good walkthrough. This gave me a lot more insight into this movie. I think Sigourneys acting captures much of it. They way her face changes when seeing the picture of the little girl may easily be the finest moment of acting from her part in the entire Alien franchise.
I am very open to the movie. Its a lot more entertaining than Alien 3 and the score is superb. I also really love the moment when she gets carried to the nest in the arms of a xenomorph.
Its great to hear the details from the novelization. It adds more depth.
I never watch the theatrical release - That goes for Alien and Aliens too. I only watch directors cut or the special edition. They are much better in each case.
I hope that someday we will have a finale chapter to the Ripley part while Sigourney is still alive. She doesn´t necessarily need to be the protagonist. A small role explaining her fate would be sufficient - Well as long as it is a bigger role than Shaws appearance in Alien Covenant.
The alien saga has a problem with loose ends. that goes for Ridleys prequel series too. We really need the third and final chapter before Michael Fassbinder gets too old.

Love the excerpts from the novelization. I’m quite fond of the extended cut of this film despite its tonal disjointedness and the ::cough cough:: hybrid. IMO Sigourney Weaver does a great job of playing Ripley 8, particularly when it comes to the subtly menacing aspects of the character.

Fun fact: The first few lines of Joyce Kilmer's poem "Trees" was recited by a kryptonite archivist in Superman 2. The scene takes place after Lex Luthor and Miss Tishmacher rock up into the fortress of solitude.
    Carry on

Thank-you for that extra insight into Ripley's character, in The Resurrection movie! As it has given me a whole new appreciation for that movie! I think I'll watch it again with those new characterizations! That movie was flawed and had many holes also they could have done something with that new Alien as they could have done one more ? maybe two as a trilogy of it's own? But I'm just spitballing here!

Great video, nice insight into the the franchise here; I don't if you've made a video about it, but, there's topic I'd like to see covered: are the aliens telepathic?
You do a fantastic job here, I love the videos; my favorite one is the topic of how the alien egg got onto the Sulaco in Alien 3, even though there's just nothing concrete, that's a topic that's been nagging me for quite a long time.
I just thought of another topic to cover: whatever happened to Hudson from Aliens?

I always liked resurrection.. It was never a classic like the rest but it had its own style like the others and did have some great moments.. The practical effects are still awesome.. I was also unknowingly a fan of this directors previous movie so no wonder I got sucked in by this.

Another great video, and especially nice to see some love for Resurrection, which in my opinion is the most underrated of the original Ripley films (though I still rank it where you do on your list of Alien films). After watching this, it did bring to mind some questions about Resurrection that i've been thinking about and I thought I would take this opportunity to ask ya.....
    1. What were the Xenomorphs going to do with Ripley 8 when they captured her? It's clear they weren't going to have her be host for a facehugger since she wasn't cocooned and no egg was around her, so what was the point of bringing her to the nest? Also, if they weren't going to infect Ripley 8 with a chestburster, then why did a facehugger jump on Ripley 8 during the underwater scene?
    2. Do we know how the Xenomorph's viewed Ripley 8 (expanded universe, novelization, script, etc)? Did they see her as kin, or even as a defacto Queen since it is implied that the Xenomorphs may have inherited memories and therefore would have some idea that they may have come from Ripley?
    3. Why did the newborn kill the Queen? Was it that it had enough or Ripley's inherited memories that it recognized/remembered the Queen as an enemy?
    4. If the Queen eventually developed a human like reproductive system, would that mean that she would no longer reproduce asexually, and by extension, would need genetic material from an outside source to fertilize her eggs and produce the newborn? Perhaps that was the reason the scientists were in the hive as they may have been the source of the necessary genetic material, or even maybe that was why Ripley 8 was brought there?
Im not sure if there are answers out there, but I would be interested to hear your opinions on this. In any event, I (along with several fans)appreciate all your hard work and will continue to tune in. Thanks

I would say that I like the Special Edition more than the theatrical cut. Honestly, I equate it to Daredevil with Ben Affleck. The special edition added more to the story and the theatrical version was more ambiguous, almost to the point that it almost didn’t make sense.

Resurrection feels like a spiritual sequel to the Earth Wars series. With a few minor exception, there are plenty of clues that point to the director at least being a fan of the series. Smarter alien drones likely due to Ripley 8 cloning process, the dreams Ripley 8 has, her ability to feel and hear the drones and the Queen. That line where Perez says that for all intents and purposes Ripley wiped out the alien race...that ending shot of a destroyed Paris... possible aftermath of the Infestation. Even if it's not canon, I'm sure it's a respectful nod to the comics.

Thank you so much for this. It's amazing. I really wish they would've included these missing story moments in the movie. It would've connected Ripley 8 with the source of Ellen Ripley, and it would've connected and paid homage to her past while moving forward with her present. Hollywood just doesn't get it.

Im loving this Alien Resurrection content! Ive always enjoyed it...yes the movie has faults, but I look at the film as an adaptation of the Dark Horse comics; cloning, hundreds of years in the future, androids with feelings, the weird new born and space pirates. All signs of a cheesy comic book plot. Ppl need to lighten up n not take the 4th fiļm so serisouly

Have done any content on the alien and the alien queen that got ejected out of the airlock? I would have thought Weyland Yutani would have attempted to track these floating specimens to recover and study before spending over 200 years trying to clone ripley and the queen from her blood. Apologies if this has already been covered or if there is some literature on this

Alien Resurrection is a frustrating film in the series for me, cause i found it interesting what they did with the Ripley clone, how she had some of the Xeno DNA within her and it changed her slightly. I've always strongly felt from the scene where Ripley sees all the failed clone attempts of her, that should have made her practically give up on the human race and she should have just ultimately sided with the Xenomorphs, she even bonded with them afterward.
They should have just made it where when Ripley teams back up with the other characters, she helps them escape in their ship, but she then shuts down the self-destruct and takes that military/science ship off into deep space to find a home for the Xenos and continue their race. They would be her family and children now, cause she was already embraced as one of them by that point anyway.

I think this movie gets a bad reputation, it does have it's faults but I do like the acting by Sigourney, and the alien /human that she becomes.
I do wish they would have added more of her past and her emotions coming back.
The loss of newt; would have been a good addition. I don't think they did her justice when they killed her in her cryo tube *sad face*
