I don't like how Fincher was treated when the movie was being made. Fincher was a very inexperienced director at the time and many feel he was being pushed around and undermined. His original concept for the film was very different from the concept used in Alien 3, and it was scrapped because of his inexperienced.

@@badgerden7080 yeah man,so true. Many movies have these problems today (Justice League for example,Snyder finished filming, but had to step down due to some illnes, then J.Wheadon came, filmed new scenes for extra 80mil,and final film was some half-spliced trimmed mix of... idk what)! Studio interference, and bullshit decisions from ppl who know nothing about making movies...

Alien 3 doomed from the start as instead of giler and hill the long time producer of the series being in charge fox took charge there were like a lot of diffrent writers and directors from 87 till 91 when they hired fincher they had spent 11 million before filming even began and then fox undermined fincher and interfered all the way he didn’t even cut the film the studio did I feel like the assembly cut should have been the cut realeased is it great no but it was a million times better

The script was changed on a daily basis, for what came out in the end and what Alien movies we have had since, I've got alot of love for Alien 3. Obviously it doesn't compare to Alien and Aliens, but I always sit and happily watch it once or twice a year.

Same here, I actually like the movie despite its flaws, I hate Hicks and Newt getting killed off but it’s still a great movie. Charles Dance is great, Charles Dutton also despite being a murderer and rapist of women. Pete Postlethwaite! I find Brian Glover.... difficult to be around, but love his character. The set was a nightmare, too. From what I've gathered, two actors developed bronchitis and it was difficult to convince the dog to stay in outlying areas, apparently. When the dog is uncomfortable it's time to shoot the film somewhere else, I think.

I don’t agree with the majority that A3 is THAT bad compared to its predecessors which were considered masterpieces in their own right.
Grew up on Alien and the sounds of facehugger eggs hatching haunted my bedroom for years. And if I ever left a sliding closet door open in the deep darkness that was my room, I swear I could see the queen xenomorph replicating the elevator scene.
Darkness, dread and an illusion of hope already existed for me against such a formidable foe. The perfect life form. A killing machine without remorse.
I felt A3 further amplified the truth about the xenos, that the species is truly horrifying and hopes of surviving it, very foolish. I love to explore the depth of darkness and dread. So I didn’t mind it. I liked it.

  • @DanteCorwyn
    @DanteCorwyn 2 года назад +33

It's a very different film from the first two, and as a sequel to a sequel, it had to do something different (hell, Alien and Aliens are very different films). In Alien and Aliens, we pretty much learn everything there is about the alien. We know their life cycle, their activities, and it's hard to do a story about a creature when, for the most part, the audience knows everything about the creature. In Alien, you're seeing everything fresh, and it's terrifying. In Aliens, it's horrifying; we see plenty of of the aliens, and we know what they can and will do, but they're not quite as scary, since we have at least a good idea of what they are. As Ripley says, "You've been in my life so long, I can't remember anything else.". They can't really do much without changing the nature of the alien at this point, and there's no point in doing so.
It's a grim and depressing film, and that works for it. Ripley is tired, she's fought the creature twice, and she knows she is going to be killed by it, and the only hope she has is with a band of murderers and worse, the scum of humanity. And they're still better than Wayland Yutani. It's a dark and depressing universe, and the alien isn't the only monster in that universe.
Plus, it is one of the few Alien films that doesn't have the final alien killed by airlock.

Nah. It just made sense that they would survive
In Alien, there was one Alien and one survivor.
In Aliens, there were many Aliens and multiple survivors.
It's escalation and also accomplishment and to strip that away is to undermine the actions the characters took in Aliens... and for what? Just to introduce a bunch of poorly written characters in their stead
I'd agree that the tonal shift back to horror was probably the right move, but it wasn't necessary or narratively satisfying to kill off the others (off-screen no less ffs!!!) to achieve that.

Look, there are aspects of that film that are great and some even iconic. Ripley diving into the hot lead is dope and makes her into a Jesus figure and there's so many layers. But as a directorial debut, Fincher killed a child (and a dog) and a protagonist from the last film OFFSCREEN then had scum of the earth cremate them in the film. Even if the film would've been shot differently, when you add these plot points up, it's the cinematic equivalent of Chuck Palahniuk's short story "Guts" where a guy's intestines are sucked out of his body in a pool. Shock value is value I guess, but even as someone who still watches Alien3 (and fanedits) fully knowing it's not his vision, you can't do that and expect a wide audience to look past that. I get that he wanted to shake the pro-imperialist thing Cameron built, that people for some reason connect to Alien as if there was a consistent vision and it wasn't kinda contrived and far fetched that they took her immediately back to LV426. Cameron just has that swagger that sells bullshit. All Fincher had to do is follow the damn train, CJ. I still love all of these films and enjoy them as if they were comic books, by different artist and who gives a damn about continuity. Fincher is now one of the best directors ever, and Jean Pierre Jeunet delivered an awesome, stand-alone Alien Resurrection. It's all awesome stuff, even if 3 is ultra-macabre.

I was insanely excited as I would watch Aliens pretty much everyday after school. I watched it so much I was able to recite ALL of the dialog from memory.

Original fans of the film who fell in love with Ripley, Hicks and Newt and the possible future those characters had (becoming a surrogate family, maybe) after surviving the horrors of Hadley’s Hope. That idea was implied by Cameron and definitely what the characters and fans deserved. It was wholesome after a shared and traumatic experience. The implication that those three characters made it back to earth and stayed together was the pay-off for the fans. What Ripley had survived twice and when you really think about it, the position Newt had been in, all alone and being hunted by the aliens, what a terrifying ordeal, surviving with the very basic life skills of a 6 yo, it’s so incredible, it’s almost inconceivable that she remained uncaptured and alive, but Cameron’s story was so well told, it was believable. What Newt meant to Ripley on so many levels, a chance to be a mother again after missing out on Amanda’s life, a chance to redeem some of the guilt she would have felt for not being their for her own daughter, the promise she couldn’t keep (not through her own fault) but that wouldn’t have alleviated the guilt any less, the fact that she made a promise to Newt and this time she kept it' putting herself at unbelievable risk to do so. The chance to give Newt a mother’s love, again from someone who fully understood what she’d been through and Hicks, the patriarch who would have loved and protected them both. The fact that was ripped away from us in the first few minutes of Alien3 is unforgivable. The fans cannot see past this betrayal. The film is pretty good, but because they betrayed us the way they did, it immediately set a hatred of the film. Even James Cameron was angry about it, like Michael Biehn stated, ‘The final third act of Aliens was about keeping Newt safe and alive.’ The film could be awesome, but the fans can’t see past the betrayal of killing Newt, Hicks and Ripley and all the trio stood for.
The William Gibson script is kinder to us and much more endearing, but I almost cried when they sent Newt to Oregon to live with her grandparents and they didn’t get a chance to say good bye to each other. In both Alien and Aliens, we cared about the characters, we were rooting for them.

    • @occam7382
      @occam7382 Год назад +2

Yeah, agreed. One nitpick though: You said Newt was 6. By the time of the events of Aliens, Newt was 12. But I digress. Yeah, that idea of Ripley, Hicks, and Newt returning to Earth and developing into a surrogate family as they collectively deal with the trauma of their experiences on LV-426 is a great idea. I personally think a great idea for a story would've been for this to be the first act of an alternate Alien 3, until Newt is kidnapped by Weyland-Yutani to force Ripley and Hicks to clean up another one of their messes on LV-426: an ill-advised attempt at exploiting the alien derelict (designated Origin) to harness the power of the Xenomorphs had predictably gone wrong, and Ripley and Hicks were the only people alive with any experience in combatting them. It could've been an epic climax to this trilogy, with Ripley returning to LV-426 for the final time, no longer seeking to destroy the Xenomorphs out of vengeance, but because she has a family now, and she'll be damned if she's gonna let these aliens take that away from her again. But that's just my idea.

In Metroid 3 the baby Metroid (which she gave to scientists for study) is kidnapped by evil space pirates and it draws her back into the fight to save it and prevent them from cloning it for bio weapon use. So you can see how your idea for a different Alien 3 echoes that nicely :)

Late to the party but thanks for compiling these into a video. In an era where one-star (and ten-star) reviews are occasionally used to deliberately influence the rating of a newly released show/movie, it has been interesting to watch this and see the, more often than not thoughtful and eloquent criticisms, from older and also more recent reviews. I have seen Alien 3 and found myself agreeing with the vast majority of the reviews you have shown here. If it was a standalone (non-franchise) sci-fi film, I could see it getting a midrange score of 5 out of 10, but for a sequel in the Alien universe, following in the footsteps of the first two films and having a legacy to respect and build upon, it does deserve a lot of the criticism it gets and I can empathize with reviewers who gave one-star reviews.
I'd hazard a guess most fans who despise Alien 3 didn't want or expect it to be a sugar-coated, light-in-tone sequel with Ripley, Hicks and Newt sailing off into the sunset as a happy 'pseudo-family', but I agree with them that simply killing two of these characters off-screen before the opening credits have barely finished is disrespectfully lazy and creatively bankrupt. I haven't seen the Assembly Cut version of Alien 3, but having read that it doesn't significantly alter what happens to any of those aforementioned characters, I don't feel the need to watch it as it can't be edited into an entirely new film. I've watched all of the films in the Alien universe and, except for the first two films, they are all pretty much forgettable and the franchise has now entirely lost its way (this began with Alien 3). I will be somewhat interested to see what direction they take in the new 'Romulus' movie, but they will have to convince me to watch it, whereas when Alien 3 was about to hit cinemas I couldn't wait to go and see it. As a sci-fi horror fan I will be forever grateful for the the creation and existence of Alien, Alien Isolation and Aliens but, just because a film (or game) has got a xenomorph/xenomorphs in it, doesn't mean it should be immune from being lambasted by fans who feel it tarnishes previous works and gives the franchise a careless, misdirected shove towards mediocrity.

As always, fantastic video. I’ve suggested your channel to several people and hopefully they’ve given it a look.
My two cents on Alien 3.
I did see it on opening day. Aliens was my first experience with the franchise and it excited me to see the original. As the first film came out when I was 8, the second film came out while I was still too young to buy my own ticket and my great grandmother took me. She was a good sport sitting through a film of blood, violence, and gore. Her only review, as a kindnesses to my enthusiasm was “well, it was very loud”.
By contrast, my first experience with Alien was on VHS with a fantastic sound system and a very well watched rental copy. For what ever reason, the tape had a fold in it during the egg hugger scene that made the scene play out in utter silence until the titular moment and then the picture went to loud static nearly giving me a heart attack. I of course loved the rest of the film as it played flawlessly to the conclusion.
So, my first experience as an adult with the franchise had me go to the store, purchase an Alien 3 t-shirt, advanced tickets, and I read up on all the info I could that didn’t reveal plot.
I knew going in that the studio wanted an Alien like experience vs more action. I knew Weaver wanted an end to the franchise and was given the producer’s title to get a bigger cut as part of agreeing to do the movie. I knew Fincher took on the project as part of a green light arrangement to do 7.
I was disappointed after, but like this film more than resurrection. It has a grit and a different take as well as opening the door for franchise expansion.
The assembly cut helps. Not my favorite, and it is a testament to how a studio can ruin a franchise simply by forcing something to come out vs waiting for the right story.
I like the film today. Still not my favorite, but ok considering the production mess.
    Good video

well, you've definately sacrificed for your art, so I salute you. I generally track your viewpoint: I appreciated the film on its own merits and gave it a lot of leeway to render the dialog and action differently and treat the legacy iconoclastically (if that's a word).
You know, we got something from each of those things. Having the broken dialog and oddly emphasized languaged ("Fuck it, let's go for it!" drew a cringe from me) let them compose words into the visual imagery-morse's upstretched arms, when he yells that last line, the back and forth between Dillon and Ripley in the dining hall, the barbs of distrust between Ripley and Clemmons about her mental and physical state. It wasn't naturalistic dialog but the lines moved the characters through an expansive range of situations where they ran a whole gamut of emotions. Some scenes benefitted from this, like the Autopsy. Second, and most important from an artistic standpoint was to not mollycoddle the story by making the characters from the last story too precious to hurt. The movie was trying to tell a very nihilistic story about human nature and I think they were trying to get down past the usual safe narratives about fighting monsters, and even fighting monsters while fighting ourselves into the basement where our struggle is only to preserve human blindness to it's own depravity. This was the only place they could go (well, there's one other, but no one considered that the Alien might be something more complex than a Jungian silhouette) and to be different, this story would have to be a darker look at humanity than either of it's predecessors. That got us the bambi-burster scene, the folley of prisoner Gollic and the antagonistic but earnest dynamic of Ripley, Clemmons and Andrews.
And visually, I thought it was also a corageous way to use depth of field and focus to tell the story-which made the camera an ambiguous and involuntary narrator (the macro shot of the syringe pumping clear liquid into Ripley's arm while the Alien silhouette is filling the background and sending Gollic into hysterics. Cameron and Scott had both focused on surface color and texture. relying on shadow and falloff to give depth and psychologically play with the viewer As a result, transparency, camera artifacts and the relative age of objects weren't easily discernable in the first two movies where they were incredibly prominent in Alien 3, and were actually used to tell the truth concealed by the shot.
But I also lament for the lost opportunity to tell the story of the first two films, in a more complete way, not just use them for raw material. I defended the film to its critics when it came out in 1992, but these days, I've probably been disappointed by too many similar attempts to shine me on with artistic trickery when someone didn't have a story(Eyes Wide Shut). I was disgusted by Alien Resurrection the first time I saw it because of this. In almost every way, it was worse than Alien 3-after the Aliens broke out of holding. Up to that point, I thought it was pretty good).
So I get the ambivalence and appreciation. These days, I have to let go of some of my hardened cynicism about new versions of things I loved in youth. I haven't watched Alien 3 in a while, but I'll get back to it soon enough.

*Aliens specifically is literally one of my favorite sci-fi movies of all time and as a biology student in LOVE the expansions on the hive like mentality that the xenomorphs have when in numbers. I love the expansions on the class orders of such xenomorphs and hives. I LOVE the xenomorph queen and her higher intelligence and telepathic abilities. I LOVE Vasquez and her last stand in the vent ducks. The xenos are stronger, bigger , faster. It’s an amazing movie but I honestly love all 3*

Despite its flaws, I love the Lynch version of Dune. Even having seen the Villeneuve version, which may be a better adaptation, my appreciation of the Lynch version has not diminished.
One analogy might be that two sculptors were given identical pieces of marble and given the same instructions by their patron. What they create will invariably be different, but that doesn't affect the value of either result. Their work can be appreciated for their similarities and their differences, and films should be considered in the same way.

I really like Lynch's Dune as well. Watched it many times. Gotta say, I found Denis V's Dune boring, ugly (which for him is weird) and unengaging. They had so much time to tell 1/2 the story and I feel it just got wasted. Josh Brolin is always reliable and so is Jason Momoa. Oscar Isaac wasn't great in this; not compared to Jurgen Prochnow and William Hurt in other adaptions, playing the same character. Javier Bardem is great, but not even used at all in this one. Timothy Chalamet is not my cup of tea. Looks 18 but is almost 27...too much youth for this role. Either way, I agree on Lynch's Dune.

You kinda hit the nail on the head, for me, straight off AT..... It was losing Hicks and Newt for me.....we had so much invested in those two characters.....and even more importantly Ripley did too..... I felt Dark Horse dealt with the characters better, at the time.
But as time passed I began to feel that that's the way life is.... unfair......and I began to accept that.. As a piece of cinema, having seen it upon release, it was a beautiful looking picture.....and much better than people believe.
Thanks for a great video Alien Theory 😁

Even with the 2021 Version that everyone loves, they have cut an amazing amount out, so would have to agree 3 3 hour movies released one year after the other. The way Dune 2021 was teased and advertised for years, then release dates constantly being pushed back, with only half a story has been maddening. It is Dune "PART ONE" in 2021.
The Lynch version(s) I know of at least 4, seem to get side tracked into silly things on the assumption the audience was not intelligent enough to understand the Dune story. *Examples: weirding modules rather than martial arts, heart plugs in all Harkonnen, milking a cat as an antidote for poison, and on and on* The first one for all it's faults and questionable special effects could have been justice if they just hadn't wasted so much time on trivial side paths, in about 4 hours, I think at least.

I was born in 1974 and grew up with Alien, Aliens and Alien 3. I seen Alien at the Drive In as a kid with my parents, then I seen Aliens in the Theatre as a teenager with my Uncle and till this day its the best movie i’ve seen in a theatre. I waited years for Alien 3 and was so excited when it came out !!!
I dropped 3 hits of blotter LSD and went to se Alien3 at the theatre and within the first 5minutes I was emotionally devastated that everybody but Ripley has died.
The only part that I liked in Alien 3 was when the Alien kills the guy climbing the ladder with the detonator, when he drops it the tracers were insane as it slowly fell only to ignite when hitting the ground.

I couldn't recover after that and i had a strong distaste for the movie for about 20 years. But ive warmed up to it over the years. I view it more of an oddity, particularly equipped with the knowledge of what this movie could have been, should have been and the different regional editing choices.

I met Paul McGann (Golic) at a con yesterday, and I said I’m sorry FOX messed up Alien 3, and he said “Oh yeah they messed Fincher around, but he had the last laugh though - he’s David Fincher!”
He also went onto to say he’s never seen the film, but heard about the Assembly Cut, and the chances of Fincher reclaiming it and doing his own cut were probably zero.

The egg isn't a problem for me; the egg sac was there to allow some control over where the egg is placed. The eggs themselves, however, are developed inside the Queen, so it could feasibly be laid by the queen at some point, perhaps in the dropship itself.

I just realized that the 20th Century Fox executive producers that were parasitizing David Fincher in Alien 3 are just like the character Carter J. Burke from Aliens.
Sent in by an unscrupulous greedy corporation with anxiety to oversee (and eventually screw up with greediness) the fine work that very capable people were doing to salvage a bad situation.
