Alien 3 - Caravan Of Garbage

  • Opinions of Alien 3 are certainly divided. Off the back of the terrific first two entries expectations were high for the return of Ellen Ripley, Hicks and Newt but things didn't exactly turn out well for 66% of those characters. Taking things back to the single monster scare of Alien 1979 David Fincher does his best to elevate the story whilst constantly wrestling with the studio with what resulted in a movie he still very much hates to this day. But Alien 3 is certainly not without it's redeeming qualities. Thanks for watching our Caravan Of Garbage review

The guy with all of his past faults, was sort of becoming a love interest to Ripley, providing her with a bit of solace and optimism after losing 2 people she deeply cared for. He seemed to genuinely care about her wellbeing… only to then get brutally killed before he even knew wtf was going on. RIP Space Tywin

Plus, as horrific as the autopsy scene is, it's not half as bad as exposing a nine-year-old to a planet full of vicious predators (and not the fun kind with the cloaking devices and the dreadlocks). The alien would be the least of her worries.

The way Fox treated Fincher really does beggar belief. They kept demanding to know why the film was taking so long to make when they forced him to start shooting with about 50 pages' worth of script, and then every time he asked for resources that he would need to finish the project they gave him between half and one fifth of what he asked for, seemingly out of spite. She's lost her friends, she's lost her job, she's lost her daughter, and adoptive daughter and her lover and now the Alien is going to take the only thing she has left, her life and so she makes the ultimate sacrifice to finally destroy the alien and deny the company that has never given a shit about her or anyone else.... You know.... before Alien Resurrection undoes it all.

There’s no character assassination. There’s no undoing of any events. So what if two characters didn’t make the transition into the next chapter? Hicks was barely important anyway, and the only purpose Newt served was to make Ripley’s character motivation be based on motherhood, which was just something James Cameron came up with, because all his female characters have to be stand-ins for the women in his life. Ripley isn’t a mother, she’s a survivor.

The whole Hicks and Newt thing… I also never understood the whole uproar over that either. Hicks was cool in Aliens, but he served no purpose to the greater story. Newt’s only purpose was to drive home the motherly aspect of Ripley, which was just shoehorned into her character by James Cameron (because he can only write women in a motherly or spousal way). I don’t mind something going for the bleak route in a story, the problem for me is that for this series in particular, the bleak route made for a MUCH less interesting story than what we likely would have had going the opposite direction, especially with what cameron had proposed with the pseudo family unit idea.
The idea of further developing the relationships between the survivng characters from alien 3 as they deal with a new threat is just flat out more interesting to me than what we got.

I like alien 3, neither of these versions are my favourite tho, I might be wrong but I think there's a third version, if there isnt then I feel like there is a much better cut still to be made by just blending these two together and just using the best parts of both versions
Regardless alien 3 is one of the most important movies in the franchise because it is the movie that establishes one of the most interesting and groundbreaking pieces of lore surrounding the alien, the fact that they take on physical traits of their host, people like to write off this movie as if it's all garbage and then glaze stories which feature T-Rex xenomorphs or predaliens or gorilla aliens as if they don't owe everything to a movie often cited as a low point for the franchise
This movie also perfectly recaptures the dark, miserable lovecraftian (cruel and unforgiving universe) tone that the first movie had which was lost (even if it was deliberately) in James cameron's aliens by not only opening with the deaths of two fan favourite characters from the previous movie but then going so far as to show us in excruciating detail the autopsy of a child followed by the rest of the movie, the death of a dog, an attempted SA, Ripley turned host, etc.
I think a lot of the hate this movie gets isnt actually about the quality of the movie, it's hate directed at the fact that the movie is unpleasant but that was never an accident, it was a choice

I assume people prefer the ox because no one wants to see a dog die but I think that's just part of the movies dark tone

I mean, we start with the original "Alien", then Ripley's ship falls onto this prison and then the company takes her from Fury and then we get "Aliens".
Obviously, we would need some alterations at this point, like removing any "Aliens" characters from "Aliens 3" 'cause of the timeline and Ripley shouldn't die in that one, and maybe changing the dog alien into a young queen (should look different from the big chap, but not as big and gorgeous as queen was in "Aliens" just to not spoil the moment of huge revelation in that one).
And you know what, it would be really better in every aspect of it 'cause Ripley will get her arc of finding true piece after not only losing her team but after being in prison for some time, and after all of that she would find a man to love and a daughter to raise. It's amazing how it amazingly works, just like if we all are living in alternative timeline and that one is actually the original timeline)).

Android soldiers are used because they can't incubate new aliens, but some of the android characters start to question their mission (eg maybe there's a rogue faction of androids who decide that the colony should be a place for free androids to live once they've "liberated" it).

The marine, Zula Hendricks (who now has become a mainstay in the comic lore), and an android called Davis go AWOL to prevent the company from bringing back the live xenomorph samples. I don’t think they outright say that that’s why they send the androids, to avoid impregnation, but I think it’s implied. The comic is really good, great art - a good modern Alien comic that at the time linked to a lot of the lore so it’s a decent jumping on point, but I don’t know how much of it still counts now that Marvel have the comic rights. It also features Amanda Ripley in a few little cameo roles throughout the comic!

This movie is not garbage. It's not perfect. But it has a very good performance by Sigourney Weaver as well as Charles Dance, Charles Dutton and Lance Henriksen. The scenes between Sigourney and Charles Dance are extremely well done. They have a real connection together. Sigourney shines in all the Alien films. Watch this for her if for nothing else.

Even though James Cameron didn’t come back for this one, they still wanted to try and capture some of his aesthetic. Unfortunately, without the eyes of the man himself, they just couldn’t crack the aura that Aliens had. So they scrapped all the concept art and shots where they tried to recreate the trademark Cameron blue. This resulted in the working title of the film being Blue Harvest.
Coincidentally, this was also the working title of Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi.

Super underrated movie. Love how dark it was, great setting/ambiance. Killing hix & newt between films was brutal in the perfect way. Loved that this one went back to the horror roots of the first film, and it's a perfect end for the franchise & Ripley...

My friend is a vietnam vet, and to this day he tells me that the most accurate depictions of Marines in any movie he's ever seen is the drop ship scene in Alien 3. The way each character acts is a dead ringer for someone my friend knew, especially the fact that one guy was always sleeping (regardless of how insane the environment was). He told me Marines all have the ability to sleep on command in any situation lol

So, I like Alien 3. Yes it has issues, yes it's nowhere near as good as Alien or Aliens. And of course I'm saddened that Fincher hated working on it so much. But the end result, the Assembly cut especially, I do genuinely like. I think it's the sense of dread throughout the whole movie. It's a good continuation of the horror of the first one and the high adrenaline terror of the second. And I'd argue it has the best soundtrack. Adagio is a particular favourite.
I get why Fincher hates it, I understand that, but if even half the things we've heard about its production is true then the fact we got something watchable is actually a testament to his directing. The LV-426 Reddit page often has people posting about them liking the movie, and I hope he does some day see that there are people who like his work here.

Jim Emerson has a great analysis of the assembly cut that shows finches modeled the film after JEAN D’ARC, the old French silent film. If you watch it as a tragedy/passion play rather than a horror, it comes to life a bit. I genuinely like the assembly cut now

I genuinely think the extended version of Alien 3 is brilliant. Sure, it doesn't stand up well against the first two, but Best Sci-Fi Horror and Best Sci-Fi Action are hard benchmarks to live up to.
All the stuff about horrible criminals finding religion and the way Gollick seems to worship the alien, is a really interesting new take on the franchise. Also, two words: Charles. Dance.

Bear in mind that the "assembly" version is NOT Fincher's version. As stated in this video, he refused to be involved in the edit.

I think Alien 3 would've worked better with new characters. Instead of Ripley a female colonist crashes on the planet. She loses her family in the crash and she somehow had an Alien onboard her ship.

The directors/assembly cut of this film is far from terrible and contains some excellent elements even if as a whole it doesn’t succeed - it’s also significantly better than Resurrection.
What Fincher managed to scrape together from the chaos is miraculous too.

There’s a theory by Rob Hill of Bad Movie Bible, he did a commentary of the film with Oliver Harper and suggests maybe it was Sigourney Weaver who wanted Charles Dance and Hicks dead so they wouldn’t steal the spot light from her. Which doesn’t seem too crazy, all actors want as many close ups as they can get haha
