That has got to be one of my favorite stupid things Hollywood execs do.

Basically "we put money in, things come out". No matter how much THEY delay or how much THEY interfere, its all the "ground team" problem.
Considering how much money they input it is more than fair that they get a say on the matter and interfere but not 24/7 and not this erroneous. In essence they played the overly-jealous husband/wife who fcked their marriage because of their jealous attacks and still blamed the other part.

While not the film Fincher wanted to make, his talent is very clear in it, and you even see early signs of his style that he would develop and refine over the years.
I like the bleak and oppressive tone, the visuals are often gorgeous, the acting is top notch, the music while a bit over the top at times is fantastic, and I like that all three of the first Alien films didn't try to replicate each other, they all approached the concept in a unique way. While the most flawed of the first three Alien films, I think it's on par with the first two. However, had Fincher been able to make the film he wanted, I think it could have easily been the best.

@@Amitlu Yes. That sequence in particular.
But also themes. In the assembly cut, they actually do a pretty good job of conveying themes of the value of a human life and the fucked up way that it is largely disregarded for prisoners. Then, in the third act, it is completely thrown out the window and never referenced again and the focus just becomes Ripley's tragedy.
It's messy and conversely asks you not to think to much about the film's conclusion after spending more than half the film asking you to think about injustice. It's thematic whiplash.

Killing off Hicks and Newt was a bad decision, but Alien 3 is not a bad movie on its own. It's a very dark and atmospherical movie, and honestly very unique for a sequel to an action blockbuster. Morse, Dillon and Clemens were awesome new characters. The movie looks and sounds fantastic, Elliot Goldenthal's score is absolutely perfect. The alien becoming different depending on what animal the host was, is a really cool addition. Ripley's death scene is really well done, and even though Aliens was already pretty much a perfect ending, this is still a great send off for the Ripley character. Far better than what they did with her in Resurrection. I'm really glad this movie exists.

It's worth noting that Fincher was already quite experienced when he made Alien3. He was actually a big deal at the time, even without directing a single feature film. The studio he co-founded, Propaganda Films, was *THE* production company for slick ads and other promo videos. He'd won tons of awards and helped define the "look" of 80s pop filmmaking. And an absolutely absurd amount of future talent got their start there over the years doing videos and ads - including Michael Bay, Gore Verbinski, Spike Jonze, and Zach Snyder.

I wish there was a cut somewhere in between those two versions, but really, Alien 3 in any state is just an OK movie and a bad sequel. I get why some people like it, but ultimately so many ideas and characters are half-baked or clumsily slammed in there, you would need to reshoot most of the movie to get a worthy sequel to Alien/Aliens.

I respectfully disagree. While there were some cool shots here and there, it felt mostly like a boringly suffocating movie with a cast of characters that you couldn't give two shits about (Ripley aside of course). What made Alien and Aliens work so well was partly because of how sympathetic and memorable the whole cast was which made the viewer care when the titular Alien impaled them through the chest. Alien 3 replaced said cast which a bunch of unlikable, obnoxious and crazy prisoners that were barely distinguishable from each other to the point I was actually looking forward to see the Aliens getting rid of them than seeing them overcoming the Xenomorphs.
