  • There are very few sequels that are able to match the original or potentially surpass it. James Cameron's Aliens is one of those films. Arriving in 1986 seven years after the last it marks the return of Sigorney Weavers Ellen Ripley whom is awoken from cryosleep 57 years after the events of Alien 1979. Great movies and good vibes. One of the smaller details I like about this movie is how that Ripley isn’t the only one that cares about the kid. I feel like in a lot of movies when they add a kid there’s always just one character that has to care for them, usually the main, and none of the other characters care about the kid at all. In this everyone cares for Newt. Hudson saves her from the facehugger, Hicks refuses to let Bishop leave without her, they all have her safety in mind, except Burke of course.

    • @Davidsworldtravels
      @Davidsworldtravels 2 месяца назад +8

      @@KrazzeeKane yes I see what you’re saying but her daughter wasn’t killed by aliens. So that part of the redemption doesn’t really sync up. She has nightmares about aliens bursting out of her chest, not missing her daughter’s birthday or whatever. So her real arc is overcoming trauma. Her daughter is just not a character in this at all while Newt is. So at the end it’s mother vs mother not bc she’s an actual mother but bc she wants to protect someone else (Newt) from having the nightmares she does. She finds saving others (even the marines) as a way out of her own fear which is the real theme imo and much more powerful. I actually strongly dislike in films when they have to rely on family as shorthand for emotional connection without it being earned.

I was awake so early that the children’s programmes hadn’t started yet so I put in a VHS to watch what I thought was recordings of the ITV Chart Show. As I settled down to eat my cereal and watch Bros and MC Hammer, I was surprised to see a man be ripped apart by a giant bug and milk spew out of his mouth and pour from his body. My mum had been watching Aliens with her boyfriend the night before and left the tape on top of the machine. I would have been about 7 years old. I was so traumatised that I sat frozen in my chair and watched the rest of the film against my own will. It took over a decade before I could eat Weetabix again.

And yes, in the 80s, us children did used to watch all our horror films on VHS because laser disc was for grown ups. Also people back then used to rip into women who continued to look after their children when the men just up and left. It was always the single mum’s fault in the 80s. He was full of ideas about how to make things look good on the cheap, and his coworkers had a feeling he'd be going places.

    I said on the previous video that the original Alien is one of my all time favourite movies. Despite that, I fully admit that Aliens probably is a better movie. It's the perfect way to make a sequel, and moves the character of Ripley forward in a way that makes sense and isn't just a repeat of the previous movie.
    I still prefer Alien, I like that more claustrophobic setting of the Nostromo and the 1 Alien picking them off one-by-one. Let me put it this way. Alien is a top 3 movie for me, Aliens is a top 5.

    I had the pleasure of seeing Paul Reiser at a comedy club a few years back. At the end of his set, he asked if anybody had any questions. I was sitting right up front, so I raised my hand and he called on me. In what I realized only later was a complete rip off of a Chris Farley skit from SNL called "The Chris Farley Show", I asked him if he remembered that scene in Aliens when he saw Sigourney Weaver in the room banging on the camera and he just leaned back and flipped the monitor off. He said yes, and I said "That was awesome!" and everybody had a good laugh. What a legend.

      It's been said quite a bit lately, but I strongly agree that we should only remake movies that were failures. Like, maybe this had a really solid premise but it just did not work for any one of the billion reasons a film can fail throughout production. You don't need to remake Alien or Predator, because they 100% still hold up, but you could remake Aliens Vs Predator because that movie blows lol.

    Something I'd add to the trivia segment: Counting the special edition, no fewer than four members of the cast of Aliens were voice actors on Starfleet, a British produced English language version of a Japanese sci-fi marionet series that ran on British TV in 1980-81. Mark Rolston who played Drake (The big, gruff blonde marine) played the tubby comic relief character and Newt's dad played the hero.
    In 1982, Brian May the lead guitarist from Queen, would produce a rock album based on the series alongside his good friend Eddie Van Halen, since May's son was a huge fan of Starfleet. You can find the complete series here on RUclips incidentally and the album had a remaster just last year and is on Spotify.
