  • In 1992, Dark Horse comics released a comic book adaptation of Alien 3, which featured many moments not present in the theatrical cut of the film, but later featured in the special edition Assembly Cut of the film. How close is the comic book adaptation to these versions of the Alien 3?

Me too! My dad was really unhinged when he took myself and my younger brother in LaPlace, Louisiana all those years ago. At the time, I was five or six and virtually obsessed with monster films, dinosaurs, Godzilla, and anything horror and science fiction. I still remember my dad having to lie to the ticket master about our ages because the film's rating.
I love my dad for always supporting my creature feature tastes. In his defense, he would not let his young sons watch any of the 'Friday's ', 'Nightmares' , or 'Halloweens' because of how close to reality serial killers can be, but R-Rated monster flicks could be viewed with his blessing. One of the better set of memories I have was during the early nineties and dad taking us to 'Hit Video' and renting movies for the weekend.
I am not sure how appropriate this forum is for these kinds of diatribes, but I'm thankful for the opportunity to share.

@@williamgregg6339 I am sorry to not have seen your reply earlier. It is very seldom any comments of mine get direct responses anyway, but I wanted to thank you as well for sharing. One of the major contributing reasons I leave such sentiments is to, of course, reach outwards towards the digital ether and relate or connect with all of my brothers and sisters I have not met yet. It takes courage, in my opinion, to express any feelings or thoughts on a public forum and I want to celebrate your appreciation and offer mine too.
It does seem the world unveils its complications to us more so the older we become in my opinion, especially considering the precious gift of recalling childhood memories of times where my biggest concerns, sometimes, would be returning home before dark for example. Yet, because recollection, for me anyways, is so fluid I oftentimes don’t know or realize when they are slipping away from any firm grip; or forgetting to hold certain memories tighter and becoming oblivious to them altogether.
So, when I am reminded of loving times forgot, I am grateful for all the little indicators or triggers that was able to blow the fog away.
Anyways, I digress. Thanks for sharing and I feel like a better human from your words.

I sincerely think that Alien 3 is underrated. In spite of all of its problems, it's still a fascinating, engrossing experience, with the religious and existential tones really coming through in both the aesthetic and narrative. This story really feels like it takes place in a sort of purgatory, with all of the characters waiting for their release from it and seeing as how, at the time anyway, it seemed like as long as Ripley was alive, she would never be free from the strife and trauma that came from dealing with the Xenomorphs, it could be argued that this is one of the best viable send-offs for her character. Perhaps it could have been done better, but her fight is over and she went out on her own terms, doing what needed to be done. Idk, there's something profound about that. Anyway, I'm ranting. Alien 3 is good, maybe not the follow up to Aliens we needed, but I really like it. I'd love to see a more complete cut.

I like to think that the alien on alien 3 is so hostile is because it can sense that it's around criminals that could be a threat to the queen so instead of slowly kidnapping people for host and preparing a nest it shoots to kill without taking chances

After hearing about the assembly cut I tracked down a copy and watched it, and to me it's the canon version of Alien 3, a great movie worthy to be held up next to Alien and Aliens.

Solid movie, Fincher tried to take the franchise "back to its roots" while still upping the stakes. Some of the editing choices were terrible but the suporting cast was phenomenal. Dutton was a pleasant surprise to fans of Roc(like me) and every line out of his mouth was gold. Too many people expected a sequel to Aliens not Alien.

I always liked it, and was happy when the Assembly Cut was released as I actually read the novelisation first and thought the parts that were cut from the theatrical version were a shame. Also the cast is truly a best-of-British lineup and all the cast really killed it. Another reason to resent Neill Blomkamp not getting to make his own movie is that we won't get Danny Webb back as an elder Morse.

I love how huge and aggressive the Xeno is depicted in this adaptation. There is nothing you can do. It has the wickedest alien grin and can rip people apart with its gigantic hands. A hall of fame Xeno for sure💯

    • @maralinekozial9131

Na the xeno in the actual movie is way more badass , it runs so fast that it literally blows through the prisoners like a giant bullet tearing their bodies apart when it hits them with it's headbutt & plus the runner/dog alien is the only xeno in the entire series that actually eats humans alive rather than just kidnap or kill them because it came from a animal host not a human one!!!! All these things are shown in the movie if u pay attention close enough!!!!! It's literally shown blowing atleast two prisoners into pieces with it's speeding headbutt & it's shown eating & munching on atleast two other prisoners in the film !!! The Alien in the comic u are referring to reminds me more of the xeno from the first film because it uses its hands on its victims alot in that film !!!!

wittyithink right I get that. What I’m arguing is that drowning by itself isn’t going to kill it, rather it’s the drowning killing the host and not making it viable for gestation. I do agree that the pre developed alien finding another host is non sense considering that it’s attached to the host until bursting. In short, drowning the alien won’t kill it but the host dying before the alien being fully gestated would

I was a nurse that was addicted to my prescribed morphine. I was working as the only medical staff at a camp for those with special needs and one day I accidentally administered Valium to a camper thanks to me being on such a strong dose of morphine. I thought I was royally fucked and was afraid the camper was going to die but fortunately they survived. the camper was deaf and of slow mind and nobody knew sign language so nobody understood what was going on, especially why the camper slept for so long. I still feel terrible over it all.

The comic's adaptation of Dillon's death is from the actual ALIEN 3 Novelization. So in fact, the comic adaptation combined versions of the theatrical, Assembly and novelization by Allan Dean Foster.

I like A3, it's tone is excellent. It's closes the trilogy by bringing it back to it's horror roots. I last saw the extended version, didn't realize how much they cut out. Adding it all back in as you suggested may be a mistake since that really can change pacing, look what happened to the SW Spec Editions as a good example of going overboard with additions.

I would absolutely love to see an ultmat 3rd cut by David Fincher. I love all the Alien films. And I still really enjoy Alien 3, regardless of some of the misguided hate. I never knew about the issues with production up until a handful of years ago, so now I understand why we got the film we did. You did a great job bringing this all together. I really enjoy your narrations. Thanks again, you keep making em, I'll keep watching em. Stay Frosty!!😉✌

Alien 3 is by far the darkest & most brutal film in the series & my favorite regardless if its flawed unlike the first two masterpieces , plus i luv the religious symbolism throughout the entire movie basically making the murderers & rapists her 12 apostles to her Christ like messiah they also die with her like the two murderers that died alongside Christ , it also has the best ending with the ghost of Ripley signing off from the Nostromo representing the Alpha & Omega: the beginning and the end!!!! I think this film is completely underrated even for all the hell David Fincher & crew had to go through , they still pulled off something close to a masterpiece , all 3 Alien films were rushed during production but this was the only one that did not have any type of script written before it was green lit by the studio either way Ridley , James, & David all pulled off in my opinion the best horror/sci-fi trilogy in history!!!!!! Alien Resurrection was ok but not nearly on par with the first 3 films yet nobody bashes it like they do with Alien 3 which pisses me off cuz i still consider this a masterpiece in its own right!!!!! Fuck the critics & fuck 20thcenturyfox for being money hungry dogs!!!!

Really good narration and video. As for Alien 3, I’m one of the few who loves it, I especially like the characters and performances of the cast. Only downside was the animation/ puppetry and how it was implemented, it was produced at a time when the landscape of film effects were shifting. I got the assembly cut a year or so ago, I’d wanted it for many years so watching it was really enjoyable. However I’m not sure I prefer it to the theatrical cut. I’m guessing I feel that way because I’ve watch Alien 3 so many times that the theatrical cut just feels like home. One thing I wish I could have is a directors commentary from Fincher. Shame we’ll never get it as I really appreciate what Fincher achieved with the film regardless of the troubles he had.

    AN IDEA FOR A VIDEO:
A common theme amongst all who have some kind of experience with the xenomorph is recurring nightmares. Given the horrifying aspects of the creatures and the things they do, the sounds they make, how they reproduce, their seeming invincibility at times, etc. It's not hard to figure out why they would cause nightmares, which are often brought on by stress, depression or trauma.
But, what if there was more to it than that with the xenomorph? Much of the knowledge of their species is still a mystery, but given how prevalent fear, panic, post-traumatic stress, violence and terror are concerning the bugs, could there be a more concrete cause of the fear they induce? Is it possible that they secrete or emit some kind of pheromone or bacterium that, when inhaled, ingested or otherwise enters the body, adversely affects the brain and nervous system with a cumulative effect that can induce fear and have long-lasting or even permanent effects, similar in how lead poisoning can have adverse effects on the brain and nervous system?
After all, pheromones can have a powerful effect on creatures and beings, even cause them to act almost entirely on instinct. Could this be a tool in the arsenal the beasts wield to overpower adversaries and potential hosts for procreation and growing their colonies? I think it's worthy of discussion and investigation.
Keep up the good work, bud!

@@lynngatrell7965 this idea is explored in the comic series Aliens earth war, I think it was.
Less so via pheromones but more through the psychic links they have with each other highlighted in the Aliens Labyrinth series. A corporation manage to bring back an imprisoned queen to earth but her psychic like abilities start seeping in to affecting the human population nearby with nightmares and more.

If David Fincher had got involved with the Assembly Cut, he would have left the dog burster in. Also, the deaths of Newt and Hicks are the main driving force behind Ripley's endgame. If Alien 5 ever came out and retconned Alien 3 it would be, to quote James Cameron, "A slap in the face to the fans."

Producer Charles de Lauzirika who edited the Assembly Cut said that he only wanted to restore Alien3 to a version that was closest to what David Fincher had intended. This was already difficult enough since the movie went through almost daily script revisions, so they used the most current shooting script and Fincher's own production notes to get some idea of his vision. De Lauzirika said that he specifically resisted the temptation to 'improve' the film, although he did omit much of Fincher's original autopsy (perhaps on Fincher's own notes). Although I feel that the Assembly Cut really works well enough now, I'm almost curious to know what we would have got if they had tried to incorporate even more footage.
Some of the deleted footage is described here: avp.fandom.com/wiki/Alien_3_deleted_scenes. There is some stuff here that I would have really liked to see incorporated: extended Murphy's death, the Fiery Alien, Golic's mutilated body, and of course the "You're gonna need a bigger cage" remark by Aaron.
Would've been great to see a more fleshed-out and less hectic opening scene, as well as the fate of the Sulaco. Here it is best shown that they went all over the place with ideas, judging by the many continuity errors. Check Newt's cryotube which has cracks that appear and disappear between shots, the facehugger changing between normal and the royal variety. The idea of the Queen chestburster changing hosts would have been cool, but I understood that they had no convincing way of filming this. And of course it would have spoiled the reveal of Ripley carrying the Queen later on. Also too bad that none of the Alien nest scenes were ever filmed.
