  • In the earlier script stages of the prison-set Alien 3, many of its characters' fates were much different. In this video I take a look at one of the earlier drafts of this concept and the alternate fates we may have seen.

I remember a long time ago working for Acclaim Studios London over Croydon way. A Lady from Virgin (Game Publisher) and a random bloke in a suit walked in the office. They had a script and bits of the story board for Alien 3, asked if we can make a game to coincide with release of the film (which no one knew about) we said yes. That was last we heard till release, I remember someone coming back from premier saying "the game is nothing like the fucking film we are fucked" but my boss said "it's just like the story boards and script they gave us".
Was a long time ago I just remember there was a reason Ripley has weapons, inmates are cocooned and there is more than one Alien all in the game.

    • @eliasripley2357

That's cool as hell. The problem with the games, (of which the SNES version was superior😋), was that it would've made more sense to be an ALIENS game, with different character designs and locations, but it's like it always is: tie the game to the new movie for marketing purposes. I think the multiple rewrites did the film a disservice. They'd aced the script a long time back, but through studio interference and micro-managing we got the highly flawed yet fascinating film we have. Learning about the other numerous drafts, they had it down perfectly. But nippy, tweaky, nonsensical changes deprived us of what could've been a far more interesting and beloved film. Just my two cents of course.

I have always felt there could of been more done with the Clemens character, played by Charles Dance. You can still hear the regret that still consumes him, many years after the incident that led to him being there.
He is excepted by the other inmates, but is still viewed as not one of the Y-cromos - the universes scum, sent to die on a planet in the ass end of space. Similarly; his professional background has allowed him serton privileged with the guards, but they too view him as just another inmate when it suits.
This is the perfect "way in" for the company - the offer of a clean slate could of been used to get Clemens to setup a double cross later on!

The unexplored aspects of this movie seem like an ideal Alien Isolation type game. A sort of meld between that game and the Riddick games. It's just crazy all the explored but never utilized concepts. The potential of a Hive and then some Company ships arriving to bring fresh meat, guns, and Androids to mix things up all the effective isolationist horror setting the prison so easily manifests. Even searching through the waste yard to find and activate Bishop, so much potential

Yeah thus movie was ahead of its time and even with all the production issues, actually wasn't bad but no Aliens by any means. However this movie is my favorite from a setting and characterization point of view. Plus a bull alien us so cool.
I'm a kid by alien standards. I was born in 1990 so the hype of the first 2 were past me and I just had a really cool mom that loved Ripley because she is a real heroine. But I connected with 3 as a child more than 1 or 2. I think it's because 3 has a slasher horror trope to it were as 1 and 2 you have to watch for an hour to get some gore.
Now that I'm older, I see how much of a masterpiece in horror as a form of art that Alien is and I see the masterpiece that Aliens is but on a blockbuster scale. In my opinion Aliens is the best Sci fi movie to date. Alien 3 is still my favorite but not for the nostalgia reasons but because you can see how rich this movie was as character dynamics and horror elements combined. Just the final draft of it is no where near the previous 2 which I think excelled in one category (Alien for horror, Aliens for character dynamics).
To be honest, if you wanted to do Alien 3 right, that is show everything they wanted to show us...to give it justice, it would have to be at least a 3 hour movie and probably pushing close to 4....and that's just so hard to do in 1991. We wanted 90 minute movies and 2 hour movies were given to drama at the time like say goodfellas and I guess batman.

This makes the film more bittersweet and interesting. Alien 3 is a film I always found myself conflicted with. There is that love and hate relationship but the more I read about some unfilmed scenes and see the longer version where the xenomorph comes from the ox instead of the dog, it has grown a bit to me.
I wish some of these scenes do become canon (like the cocoon and burning the people becoming eggs or in cocoons). It drives home the egg morph scene of the cut scene from the first film that this species was created to adapt. The perfect organism. It would be cool to see it in a flashback or something in the new comics.

  • @ThisIsTheRoad

Gotta feel sorry for poor Paul Mcgann. His role was cut down and down and down until it was barely in the movie. He was a young actor and this was a big deal project for him. It depressed him greatly how it turned out and it almost resulted in a number of secondary failures in the mid to late 90s for him.
I personally think it's a shame the film doesn't have a version of the cacoon scene in it. Somewhere in the big sacrifice sequence I think having someone get lost and come upon a corridor full of resin and half-dead prisoners would add some additional tension to the climax.
I think these various versions also demonstrate one of the films biggest problems... too many characters. Arbitrarily have their names changed, on set they're told to lose their accents or keep them from scene to scene... Just too many. I think instead of 25 there should have been 14. 14 Prisoners, two guards, Ripley and the dog. and half of that 14 get killed in the fire scene. That way we only have named characters with distinct looks left for the remainder of the story... and then more depth be added into them.

Alien 3 was actually the first one I saw. I was 12 and a friend showed it to me, so I had no idea what was going on. A lot of the horror (the rape attempt, ect) went over my head aside from the alien itself, it actually was scarier when I had a better understanding later. XD

I never liked Gibson's Alien 3: I felt it messed with xenomorph biology way too much, taking what's a fantastical but very plausible gestation process and pushing it on the side of sheer impossibility. In fact if you read the comic book it might remind you more of Dead Space than Alien. They incorporated some of his ideas into Prometheus and Covenant, and I can't say that helped those movies in any way.
I'm personally glad they decided to keep Alien 3 more consistent with what came before as far as biology.

To be fair, by its very nature, its morphology will be potentially limitless via the nature the species comes into being, let alone lore multiple times from the aliens perspective showing their abilities to, if needed, quickly adapting to threats via its genetic-database. Xenomorphs forced to adapt to heavy combat are nightmarish.

Great video! I agree about the roles of Dylan and 85 being more true to the characters we had already seen in the theatrical version. In this alternate version, I really like the idea of Golic being a menace on his own side quest. There was an internal double cross in the previous 2 movies as well. Ash in Alien, and Burke in Aliens. I'm not sure how it may have been received from the majority of audiences, but I would have liked to have seen that secondary threat in the theatrical film. It's never enough for a group of people trying to survive xenomorphs. There always has to be a douchebag with an agenda to worry about too lol.

At 35 years old & renting this at the video store back in 96 especially after seeing Aliens first & then seeing the original Alien a few months after Alien 3 , I don't got any un easy feelings anymore with the depressed & more dramatic & disturbing approach David Fincher took with this film nearly as much as I did back then as a kid growing up in the 90's & honestly, this is my personal favorite & the only film in the entire franchise that I absolutely never get bored of watching regardless the mood I'm in especially after the "extended cut" came out in 03' , I luv all the original films in the trilogy equally for different reasons because they're all completely different than eachother but sometimes I actually get bored watching the first two films over & over to be honest if I watch them too often but Alien 3, I can literally watch back to back two times in a row & still enjoy it without getting bored ever💯 Every single film in this entire franchise is completely different than the other & obviously nothing will beat the original trilogy of films in my eyes but of all 8 films in the franchise, this is the second one I've ever seen & it's the only one I never get tired of & I have always had a morbid fascination with death so I honestly prefer this film over all the rest because it's by far the darkest & far far far more of a downer & far far far more graphic, violent, gory/bloody , it has absolutely the best most realistic kills & Death scenes of the entire franchise , the best cinematography , a equally good soundtrack as the first two films & it has the most viscous Xenomorph they ever created & the most iconic scenes with a alien in my opinion 💯
    Alien: Horror Sci-fi Thiller
    Aliens: Action Sci-fi Thriller
    Alien 3: Drama Sci-fi Thriller
All 3 films are completely unique & perfect in they're own ways & complement eachother perfectly, it's the perfect trilogy to me💯

That's more like it AT...the first cocoon version, getting back to Giger's original concept of the entire complete Alien lifecycle, with the still-living bodies of its victims converted into eggs and being eaten, digested upon, from the inside-out. Gone is all the Queen nonsense - this is gutteral, psycho-sexual horror at its most grusome. The full five life stages of the beast - egg, facehugger, chestburster, adult, and cocoon. The circle of consummation of its victims is also complete.

Hicks being killed off early in Alien 3 was stupid and his character would have added to Alien 3 overall.

Awesome video. The scenes came off quite tense listening to your reading of them.
I honestly think they could have been in the film with some slight changes. Instead of Dillon in the cocoon chamber, it could have been somebody else, for instance. The Golic stalking scene with the lights could also have been really suspenseful. With some re-writes, that could have worked in the film & Golic ending in a different way instead of taking Aaron's place at the end.
I would have preferred the cocoon chamber going up in a huge fire over the big explosions they have in the final film, which is just generic action movie stuff.

While this was enjoyably entertaining, the Assembly cut had the much better choices. It's interesting though, ever since I first saw the assembly cut, I always felt Golic was supposed to have had a more involved part - like the creature not killing him (kind of like a case of evil knows evil). I'm glad he didn't though, so it kept the focus on the alien. But I'll admit, that other ending was a bit intriguing - with Golic killing Bishop.

I was fortunate enough to go behind the scenes at Alien War in London & they had a wealth of props from both Aliens & Alien 3. Amongst the collection no on display they had Dietrich’s armour & smart gun.
But most interestingly were the pair of Art Deco style Greyhound sculptures. These were from a scene which was set in the library on Fiorina 161. From what I understand, the scene may have been a left over from Vincent Ward’s original story, but unfortunately it looks like it was lost on the cutting room floor….or scrapped in the many rewrites.

David Twohys script was completely different. It didn't involve a prison planet, but an escaped prisoner and an entirely new cast of character accompanying him. This was eventually reworked and turned into Pitch Black, with the xenomorphs replaced with bat creatures

as for the version where Aaron dies in the leadworks, I thought I read somewhere at some point Clemens was considered for that...but maybe I read wrong. There was also a storyboard about Ripley and a prisoner (I thought Clemens), swinging underneath a framework with the Alien walking over it, stepping on their hands

This will be a hot take for some, but Alien 3 is my favorite film in the franchise. Everything from what we got to what we didn't is fascinating to me. It's the one I constantly think about, the one with the most emotional and existential resonance. Objectively, the previous two films are more successful in realizing their ideas and potential than Alien 3, which honestly, makes it that much more intriguing. Even if you were to look at it as a standalone, which being a sequel is understandably hard to do, there is a lot to unpack here.
These are all very interesting alternatives to the characters arcs that are in the filmed versions, but I agree that ultimately, the devs make the right decisions.

I like whatever link Golic and the Alien had. Weather it was just Golic's own madness or some psychic hyper sensitivity that let the creature manipulate him is cool, since it implies this Alien can think of long term gain. Especially neat him nocking off other prisoners in the dark, however in the finale his actions don't make sense. If he's either crazy or psychic, neither is a good reason to kill Bishop II. If we were to need to keep Golic past releasing the Alien, then why not have Morse knife him or something? It would at least preserve Aron's moment.

It would be nice to see how Aaron's family took the news of his death. If I'm not mistaken, didn't he have children, a daughter maybe? What if she began looking into his death and the death of the prisoners? Only to discover that he survived being shot to death with future medical tech, and the Company placed him in stasis? Oh well, we may never know...

What if he told Aaron's family (daughter maybe) what really happened before he's killed by "The Company." What if his death and the murder of all the prisoners motivated Aaron's family for answers, and in their investigation, they are the ones who bring down "Some greedy corporation"-Dr. Wren

I'm with your thoughts. Aaron redemption as company man to realizing he as worthless as the prisoners here so he acts like them is great. To me, he us the Gorman of alien 3 but with n even better role at redemption
Dillon has to die like the movie. He gives a much better speech to do the last stand. When they are in the mold...I love his lines " bullshit, there's gonna be 10 tons of hot lead in here sistah" ( when Ripley says to leave her in the mold. And also " I'm not gonna move with out you. Now get going!" Fuck now that I think about it Charles Dutton is awesome and there are quite a few movies he is in that his voice so so strong. Let's just say if Sam Jackson wasn't already mace windu, it should have been C Dutton.
The golic idea was interesting and I could definitely see how it could play out and possibly add some horror to Alien that we haven seen yet ( like a human slasher) instead of a crafty Droid or businessman. I do think golic, being a murderer and rapist of women a definite sociopath maybe even psychopath because he too the dragon name so seriously, would have played nicely for the alien 3 setting of hopelessness.
But if golic was gonna be Aaron which meant Aaron was gonna be Dillon, we wouldn't have the awesome Dillon dialogue in the 3rd act. And out of the 3 potential changes, u would rather golic get nerfed so Dillon and Aaron can get their character development. Honestly what golic did in the assembly cut was treacherous enough and I think his role rightfully finalized there.

Thanks for this video. It is an amazing source and sheds light onto so many great ideas for the script, even if it reveals some not so good ones.
I happen to pretty much side with Fincher on this film. It’s so beautifully shot, so flawlessly cast and superbly acted…I mean, truly superior acting, to me better even than both previous films. Also music, audio, photography and the practical man-in-a-suit Alien effects and design are the best of the saga, especially the lighting and way they were shot…
Sadly, in the end what you get from this movie is so much of a disappointment, precisely BECAUSE of the achievements it makes and the greatness it promises.
In the end it’s like a disjointed mongrel: the monk ideas (being the wooden planet the poorest idea of them all as it betrayed both previous Alien movies sci-fi realism), on top of the horror film ideas, on top of the legacy of the series ideas, plus a great but partial character development, plus the rush of finishing the series (which didn’t happen anyway). Plus, such perfectionist and hard heads together. Plus a genius, but unproven director who didn’t get the respect he needed to realize the vision they had all accorded to make at some point.
The deaths: This video clarifies why its great characters’s deaths feel so out of place and then painted them with gore and surprise as a replacement for proper dramatic endings. One can see this from the beginning: the cold, unbelievably unceremonious and “convenient” disposal of truly beloved characters (that we even fought with) in Aliens was truly a bad omen of what was to come.
Some honor is tried to be elicited in their cremation, with its fantastic eulogy speech but it is tainted by the overly cruel, gory and prosaic birth of the alien (I truly preferred the dead ox version). I guess Newt’s death was inevitable and her autopsy a tense, dramatic, suspenseful scene. But how about keeping Hicks alive for a while? Do something akin to Bishop’s interview but somewhat more tearful, even a bit romantic? No way to know now of course.
That brings us immediately to Charles Dance’s FORMIDABLE doctor’s character. His posterior career has shown that he is of the star echelon. He could have been a great co-hero, a new beginning for Ripley and a real dramatic, heartbreaking witness to her sacrifice. The only one that could truly began connect to her in all of the series and at the same time understand fully the scientific and heroic implications of her death. A real pity.
I could go on but lastly I really need to talk about the miniature FX of the runner Alien:
I have to say it, I cannot believe that these were Fincher approved. Particularly the way they were filmed or, more probably, pasted onto the film. Be it the lighting, speed, lack of weight, scale moving on camera they look terrible and enable some stuff that, for example, Scott would’ve edited out of the movie. Being the perfectionist we all know now that Fincher is, it is my impression that he was left out for a good bit of the editing, undoubtedly of the VFX of the runner. I can’t believe a man that does up to 130 takes of a shot and has a special process for film treatment to be able to film with record low lighting, that is a pioneer of big screen images would have accepted that his alien showed noticeable different lighting and even some green screen.
Behaviour: Aliens have something very special to them: they are precise, purposeful, ambush-type predators.
Be it that they crack your flesh off or grab you for future impregnation they did it once in one perfect, calculated motion. No long struggle, (maybe excepting Lambert’s… but there was a sharp difference in tone). It was really weird to watch the Alien struggle with its victims, bite and shake like a rabid dog…maybe it’s me, but it was kinda out of character for this new alien (or any previous alien for that matter), especially after Boggs’s, David’s and Jude’s brutal, single-strike bloody deaths which, by the way, are probably the scariest deaths of the whole franchise.
In the end the impression I left the theater with was that they wanted to flaunt these new full body creature effects showing things reserved for the privacy of the monster…but they weren’t such great effects or ideas at that and showing them on camera made for serious detraction of the quality of the film. Time has not being kind to them either. The spraying of buckets of blood (the effect of the attack) was actually a better visceral image than the actual motion of the attacker.
That said, even with these perceived flaws, one can sense the intent, the talent, the innovation, the achievement of all the geniuses at work in this film. The images and filming are unique and unsurpassable. The VFX, were deemed Oscar worthy (I am a big fan of ADI: they achieved movement and realism to perfection in the subsequent films) at their time. This alone makes for a very watchable film, better than most creature films thereafter.
So these are just my opinions as a fan. Nothing more than that.
