I always thought Apone was authentic. Learning that he was a USMC Sgt in Vietnam, now I am not surprised. Much like R Lee Ermy nailed the DI in Full Metal Jack by simply playing what he knew, Al Matthews gave the same type of performance in Aliens with Apone and it showed in the authenticity of the entire unit. His "Look into my eye" comment to Hudson conveyed awesome menace and retribution and that had to be improvised. Only a SGT knows how to convey menace like that in so few words. Rest in Peace Sgt Apone.
Yeh he was the real deal. Life experiences made play the part so well!
Really wish he had more screen time at least until the near end of the movie. He deserved it.
Always glad 2 read profound comments about d SF movie I love most
He was legit AWESOME.
The 'Look into my eye' scene Apone was giving Hudson the finger. Watch how Apone points to his eye.

This makes me realise how much I would have loved a Colonial Marines saturday morning cartoon as a kid 😢
Take a look at the starship troopers roughnecks animated series kinda similar theming
Yeah I read about that. its a shame it never had a chance.
There is a pilot for the show somewhere. Can't seem to find it anywhere but I've read it years ago from legitimate sources.
It might happen now that *Disney* owns the franchise.
Someone just needs to pitch the idea to them.
Shouldn't be a cartoon. Live action series , and keep it 18 plus!
Oh man, a prequel movie to Aliens showing what the Colonial Marines had done previously would have been awesome. What a shame we will never see that
If the Marines taking on extraterrestrial life was an everyday thing for this Same team of soldiers, it really makes you realize how lethal and terrifying the xenomorphs are when they wiped out all these Marines who've definitely had experience fighting space monsters before.
yeah a movie about the pollux bug hunt would have been awesome.
Unless it's made by Disney. I'd prefer nothing at all over that.
The Inkslicer hence why the Yutami corp was obsessed with catching one alive and using them as bio weapons.

I hated the way they killed off Newt and Hicks.
And then brought back Hicks in that awful Colonial marines game but left Newt dead.
Ripley lost 2 daughters
@@acloserlook5823 yes she did. Her biological daughter died of old age. Newt was still a kid and I think her death was harder for Ripley because she was there for the death and "burial" in person. Her daughter was long gone by the time Ripley was awakened. I'm sure it was painful but she didn't go through it like she did Newt's.

@@creolekolbytv1252 they did but the 3rd film killed them off during the opening credits.
I remember that in some military units "bug hunting" is annoying check of whole area looking for hidden people and places.
It actually fit a bit story of aliens because they expected to spend time wandering in base looking for colonists.
This makes so much more sense than the story he just told. I feel like if they had already been experiencing crazy aliens like this, they would have reacted different than they did when they experienced the xenomorph.

You only need to see the intro to Halo: Combat Evolved to know the UNSC is based off the Colonial Marines. :D
I always assumed "bug hunt" was a nod to Robert Heinlein that the screenwriters slipped in, since the expression is used frequently in Starship Troopers.
Yup
Gorman: Morning Marines. Im sorry we didn’t have time to brief you people before we left gateway but...
Hudson: Sir?
Gorman: What is it, Hicks?
Hudson: Hudson, Sir. He’s Hicks.
Gorman: What’s the question?
Hudson: Is this gonna be a stand-up fight, Sir , or another bug hunt?
Gorman: All we know is that there’s still no contact with the colony... and that a Xenomorph may be involved.
Frost: Excuse me, Sir. A what?
Gorman: A Xenomorph.
Bill Paxton/Hudson is The Best. I love Hudson. R.I.P Bill Paxton
Cool video but the story in Bug Hunt doesn't really fit too well with the use of the phrase bug hunt in Aliens. From the way Hudson said it I got the impression that bug hunt meant a trivial, boring mission chasing annoying little pests. If bug hunt meant a very dangerous mission that could kill you I think they would have taken the briefing a lot more seriously.
He asked if it was another bug hunt or a stand up fight. As a former Infantryman. Stand Up fight is a fight against another military unit.
I love the idea the Frost chambered a live grenade at 0:12 then hopped in a tiny dropship.
Good shit man, love the editing as always.
Your style of video would make for some great adaptations of some of these Bug Hunt short stories. Some I can see you doing are Broken, Exterminators, Dark Mother (as they expand on the characters from Aliens) & Deep Background, Deep Black and Dangerous Prey (simply because they are badass).
Rest in Peace Al Matthews
Yeah this has been my favourit video so far by far, it was just awesome! Sad to hear about Al though, 2 fallen soldiers now :(
Apone was one of my favorite characters. This series always kill strong and charismatic "leaders" too early - Dallas in Alien, Apone in Aliens, Clemens & Andrews in Alien 3, Elgyn in Resurrection
Dillon on Alien 3 lasted all the way to the end of the movie, he was charismatic & inspirational, got the cons to do what he & Ripley wanted. Lol the leader on 'Covenant' dies before he's even introduced.
That could be deliberate. Killing off the leadership of any unit or group is demoralizing, so it is easy to create confusion and fear among a group when there is no central figure to lead them. That way whatever is attacking them can pick off stragglers and breakaway factions early on, leaving less threats to deal with later. Also, losing members increase paranoia, and leads to internal fighting, making it even easier for an assassin to kill marks.
In original script he lasted alot longer but was stung by an alien stinger tail so was unconscious for alot of it . studio execs probably thought instead of paying him to lie on a stretcher for the rest of film just save money and kill off the character instead
ok dr froid
That is done for the horror element. If you are in a squad you follow your leader, if your leader dies aka your smartest most experienced person, it adds a new element of horror. Subtle, but there. It also drops the combat effectiveness of a particular unit. You want these aliens to feel scary, to feel like a true enemy. If someone beats up the strongest person you know, would you want to fight them?
This is a dream channel. The world of the xenomorph is the culmination of what I believe to the best era of science fiction design...the 1970s. Thanks, fellow ponderer. Well done.
It’s because the Alien franchise is so much more than a horror. It’s sci fi, action, comedy, the storyline of the evolution of the alien species. Although the last Alien film was shit.

In Reclamation (a prequel/bug hunt), we learn that Hicks was married to another marine whose unit was attacked by xenomorphs! He obvs didn't know for sure because he hadn't encountered them yet, but it's a really interesting set up to how he was deployed to lv426

It's entirely possible as well that "just another bug hunt" is now used to describe an easy or simplistic mission. And use the term bug for anything considered below them.

This story takes away from the shock of the marines first contact with the Xenomorphs, glad it is not Canon
Shows us just how bad weyland was; sending a squad out without intel is a death sentence. It's the squad's own fault for lot listening to Ripley after this mission; they needed everything they could get
yeah not knowing they walking right into a death trap.
Weyland obviously wanted to see how effective the Alien species would stand up against well armed Space Marines. They got the results they wanted.
Strap cameras to them and keep sending people end until someone comes out
I guess when humanity becomes so big that we are colonizing other planets under the thumb of some corporate over lord
People have basically become an extremely expendable resource
Making the "bug hunt" into an event seems to go against the dismissive tone that Hudson uses when he mentions it. It always sounded like it was akin to a wild goose chase, and that they never actually saw any action.

Great video! I’ve always been curious about the bug hunt they mentioned in the film. They actually made it sound like a cake walk, but these life forms are comparable in deadliness to the Xenomorphs.
The description of the lifeform just sounds like a different kind of xenomorph though. "Black, glossy...hands like razors...Eyes hidden behind a membrane...
Great addition to your fantastic content library. Never heard of this story before
Great video! Thank you for all of your hard work and that tribute for Al Matthews at the end. RIP Sergeant Apone.
Keep the brilliant content coming! Drop everything to watch your videos. Much love From UK
I love Aliens. That said, I appreciate your work on the video, but the story doesn't fit anything of what we see in the film. Part of what makes Aliens work is that the marines have zero experience with anything as dangerous as the Xenomorphs, and are completely overwhelmed by their numbers, viciousness, and creep factor. The hive and life cycles of the Xenomorphs instantly blow their minds and seeing a new one be born threw most of them into a panicky state. If they had just come off a mission like this, where they were fighting man-sized locusts with razor sharp claws and exploded in fire when they died, the Xenomorphs just become par for the course.
The 'bug hunts' the colonial marines have been on before were likely against annoying, mildly aggressive 'critters' that were probably like oversized cockroaches. A cockroach doesn't seem like a problem, but a load of them the size of a chihuahua becomes a very disgusting extermination job. Also, the Marines had two complete fireteams and the only replacement mentioned was Gorman; these other marines mentioned in the written tale as fodder for the story would have had a psychological impact on the survivors coming into the LV-426 mission. They would have been way less cocky, way more believing of Ripley, way less likely to just into that hive and give up their ammo.
Overall, I can see the appeal of the story for fleshing out the Aliens universe, (which, c'mon... who wouldn't want to do that?), but this story for a set up doesn't fit with where the marines start in the film. To be fair, this unit of marines before heading to LV-426 seems to have been a successful team, but not exactly the crack commandos of the Corp. I think that's why they were the chosen for the mission with Burke; according to the unit records, they're good enough to get the job done, but with a new lieutenant and two squads mostly of middle tier talent, they aren't likely to make waves against Burke's ideas and orders.
If they had the experience described in the book, they would have been a completely different unit in the film. Part of what makes the film work is just how no one but Ripley and Newt really know how terrifying these things are and have no frame of reference, despite thinking they've seen it all.
This seems more like the reality portrayed in the films. Agreed its great fun but seems like a stretch.
Reminds me of the casual comments about Arcturians that some of the marines may have slept with during a leave of absence. Its stated they all look alike and cant tell males from females. What does this mean? An actual alien species? Or humans that live on a colonized planet and have a gender fluid culture? Its not explained.
Just like Vasquez's bug hunt comment the ambiguity brings questions and stokes the imagination. We are not sure if it is slang for a wild goose chase or if they've actually been used as exterminators on various planets against invasive species.
It's not like I needed sleep or anything
Welcome to the club, first time I saw Aliens, I didn't sleep for weeks afterwards, convinced there were Xenomorphs at my window or crawling on my ceiling
I love Xenomorphs. They are such Badass Monsters🖤🖤
Between the books Bug Hunt and River of Pain it really adds some very interesting definitions pre-Aliens
Who wins in a fight between Dutch's squad from Predator and Apone's squad from Aliens? How would Dutch's squad do against the Aliens and how would Apone's crew do against a Predator?
David Sastre this is a good ass idea
David Sastre even with superior tech compared to Dutch’s squad colonial marines have been shown to easily be slaughtered by predators before
@@Irishfrasa But specifically this squad. What do you think? And what about Squad vs Squad or Dutch vs Aliens?
If apones squad knew they were after a predator, I think they would do just fine ! But if they had no idea what it was and that they were being hunted, then they would be In trouble ! As for who would win between the squads I think Dutch' s squad as they were all hand picked bad mofos, but I'm guessing the colonial marine squad was just an average squad! But who knows 😋

A touching farewell to a very well acted character by a powerful actor.
Great video. Awesome to see the Marines in action before their encounter with the Xenomorphs.
In Aliens they acted like a bug hunt was a waste of time but in this they have fellow marines getting killed during the mission?
I took it a different way and now that I've seen this video it makes all the more sense. "Is this going to be a stand-up fight or another bug hunt?" - "Is this going to be some BS fight where we're dying for a nebulous objective and fighting an unknown enemy or will the enemy stand and fight in a traditional manner?" Unfortunately, it was indeed the former.
The line was misinterpreted as literal by sci-fi fans and just fans in general and spawned a whole sub-universe. It's just a play on the slang "snipe-hunt" which meant waste of time job. Like they're gonna go down there and do nothing, and if they do encounter alien life it's not gonna be exciting just them exterminating them, a job they feel overqualified for. Even when she mentions Xenomorph they don't care, so they probably have encountered bugs. But with Starship Troopers becoming so popular, that line became more and more provocative.
It's funny, I always thought "bug hunt" was self-explanatory. The term is used in contrast to "stand-up fight," to face an opposing force that meets you on equal terms, so "bug hunt" must mean to seek and destroy a target which is hiding from you -- like exterminating literal insects (because dehumanizing the enemy is Military Psychology 101). Also, consider the context that 'Aliens' was inspired by Vietnam War movies. I never once assumed the Colonial Marines had faced actual aliens before. =/
You made it! From Tunguska1908EBE.

I like to keep this for close encounters!!!!🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫...i hear that!!!!!😮😮😮😮😲😲😲😲😲😲lol😃
I was always interested in the previous encountered alien lifeforms in the extended universe. Have any of the materials outside of the films ever tried to introduce other sentient races besides the Jockeys and Predators? It always always felt vague, but interesting to think about if humans had already encountered basic lifeforms on different worlds, but were still actively seeking out other sentient races, hence the vital interest in the downed ship in the original Alien.
Yeah, I really wanted to know about other alien species in Alien lore too. After all the term "alien" shouldn't be focused only on 1 alien lifeform lol.
That’s what I gathered from watching the movies, that we’ve encountered alien animals on planets but hadn’t come across any advanced species until the space jockey.
It would be great if they made a TV series on the marines
I really enjoy your videos... don't stop!
Ripley_ "They cut the power." Hudson_ "What do you mean "THEY cut the power"? How could they cut the power, man? They're animals!"
There are a couple of scenes in Aliens, like 2:30, where Apone is wearing a Masonic ring. I wonder if Al Matthews was a Freemason in real life, or if this was only a prop.
I am sure he was a Mason. I seriously doubt, even a well made as this movie was, that any costume designer would think to put a Masonic ring on him.
The Alien universe is suppose to be a dead universe. Not a star trek one.
I always thought "Just another bughunt" was an expression about a waste of time. Not to refer to other creatures.
The fact that these bugs are even explored is stupid and minimize the greatnes of the xenomorphs. They are just another...
wtf after every time I'm watching your videos, I gotta go and watch either alien series movie or predator. Good Job lol
I thought a bug hunt was the marines fighting colonial rebel militia.
Huh it's neat to see hostile alien creatures that aren't xenomorphs, deadly in their own way with their own abilities and mannerisms. Not sure what to call them locusts seem like a lame name , did I hear black Kite In the story ?
Just goes to show you - the galaxy/universe is a dangerous place. It also makes sense from the Predator universe as well. Remember the Predators hunt the most lethal prey they can find. This proves that there are pretty dangerous lifeforms out there. XD
However, based on the The Predator movie recently released, they inject themselves with alien DNA. So what happens if the DNA is incompatible? That would be the equivalent of injecting yourself with a dirty needle and with an unknown substance of which you don't know what the outcome will be? How do you inject yourself with Xenomorph DNA in any case, when their blood is acid? XD
@@sigmacademy The Predators have nothing to do with Alien cannon dude. That was just a spin off comic and a few crap movies.
Gorman said there might a xenomorph involved. The term xenomorph is a generic term for extraterrestrial lifeforms.
So in other words, yes, this will be another bug hunt. The dialogue in the movies is meant to make a bug hunt sound like exactly that, something easy and trivial. It's like the comic book authors completely forgot that halfway through writing this and turned it into a Starship Troopers fanfic that completely contradicts the dialogue. You had one job!!!
Pitch Black was originally written as a possible, "Alien 3" story. This Bug Hunt story had a similar feel. A different variation of the "alien" is pretty interesting. David's drawing's and all.
I thought that was "The Cave"
Thats a great point the aliens in thi story sound like the ones in pitch black
Totally. That was the first thing that came to mind when hearing the description. Underrated movie IMO.. would be a trip to see the relationship between the baddies in pitch black and the engineer race explored.
I never realized that it was Al Matthews in the James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies", playing the part of the Master Sergeant who instructs Bond on the use of the HALO equipment. That guy just enjoyed playing the part of a sergeant :-}
Love this content and your in-depth analysis of one of the best franchises! I'm getting my Alien/Xenomorph half-sleeve tattoo finished on October 19th, and safe to say I'm only a little bit excited! 😂
I like this alternate fiction. But I always got the feeling that the 'bugs' were pretty much just that. A pretty basic species that offered a limited threat and as opposed to being aggressive to colonists or research teams just needed to be cleared out for convenience. The marines seemed pretty flippant and blase when recalling them. That would indicate they hadn't encountered much resistance never mind lost squad members. They seemed pretty startled when under attack in the Xeno hive and terrified when squad members were killed or abducted as if they had never encountered such circumstances and resistance before.
I'm surprised that there aren't various special forces units in the future, some kind of Navy Seals/Green Barret/Delta Force.
I think the Colonial Marines are meant to combine all previous SpecOps fighting forces into a single fighting force. :)
@@sigmacademy could also be that because corporations essentially own all of the nations there is no need for so many obligatory factions of the military.
That could also be it. The thinking behind it could be that it is simply more resource efficient to have a big military force than have several smaller ones - the training, equipment and organization could be streamlined and standardized into a much better fighting force.
Of course, you would still have crack units/veteran units, but those you could use for black ops, specialized missions or training academies.
think of the heavily armored Weyland-Yutani troops from the end of Aliens 3
The movie props hint that they had previous experience with extraterrestrials. The emblem on the side of the landing craft, which ended up being too small to see in the actual film, says, "Bug Stompers: We endanger species," implying that massacring aliens on behalf of human settlers is the main role of the colonial marines. Since this emblem is not actually visible, it is ambiguous in the first two Alien films whether humans had ever encountered extraterrestrial species before.
This is actually so damn cool. Same feel as old radio shows my dad used to listen to over 70 years ago. Same effect, the viewer/listener has to use their imagination, visualization. Guided meditation of a sort, takes the brain out for a walk around the block. Nice work.
You mean a walk in the park
@@WhiteJeezus no, wrong phrase. "Walk in the park" implies easy, relaxed, leisurely, simple. OP was talking about mental stimulation and exercise.
@@amurizon it's just a line from aliens bud
bug hunt means looking everywhere for an enemy that doesnt want to be found, like flipping rocks looking for bugs
I would love to see a Fan Film based on this storyline.
I was just thinking about this today and now this pops up in my recommended..... WHAT?
Another excellent piece of work sir. Thanks
This isnt a very good short story. If this happened, they would be way the fuck more skeptical in Aliens. However, when you hear them talking in Aliens they clearly dont take anything seriously and havent been fucked around much. This story would imply that if it went down this way, they would be way more serious and skeptical when faced with LV426
I love your channel and the creativity you put into your videos. For example when you black out someone's face if they've never been seen before or add "static" during a transmission when discussing classified stuff. Please keep up the good work. You have a lot of people that love your material.
I've never noticed until watching this video, but what do the marines consider the difference between "aliens" and "bugs"? When the crew wakes up out of hypersleep in Aliens, Ferro and Vasquez have the following interaction:
Vasquez: Ey, mira. Who's Snow White?
Ferro: She's supposed to be some kind of consultant. Apparently, she saw an alien once.
But the way Ferro delivers the line makes it sound (at least to me) like "aliens" are this really unknown thing to people in that universe. Then later during the briefing, Hudson asks if it's "gonna be a stand-up fight, or another bug hunt". So clearly (as this video explains) they've been on bug hunts before. So then do they not consider "bugs" to be "aliens"? Maybe they're under the impression that an "alien" is a more intelligent, humanistic type of creature than a "bug"?
I got the impression that they'd all seen aliens before, so it was more sarcasm than nonbelief. But those are just my thoughts
RIP Apone From Fellow UNSC Marine!!!!
UNSC?
It's a great line as it could infer previous encounters with extra terrestrials or it could be a throw away line of in universe lingo where "bug hunt" means something like "goose chase" or "snipe hunt" implying that this is a highly trained group who have been on many missions but all of them were basically training exercises that never encountered enemies and the group has never been tested in combat.
That's XCOM, baby.
Whoops, wrong franchise.
Funfacts: Malinka sounds like a Polish surname - and it's meaning is "a small raspberry fruit".
Wierzbowski is also a Polish surname - and means willow + "ski".
The name of that book was misleading and kind of put me on the wrong foot from the beginning, it should have been called: Colonial Marines Bug Hunts. The Xenomorphs were hardly in the book, some of the stories are okay but the book overall was nowhere near as good as the counterpart Predator book: If It Bleeds.
Al Matthews, thank you for your service, and the entertainment.
And the passing of another great actor, Bill Paxton "Pvt. Hudson". Here's to both......HOO-RAH!
RIP Sarge
Fun fact: Tip Tipping was in the elite British special forces SAS. They sit in the top three Special Forces units along with the British SBS and the USA Navy Seals.
The problem (sometimes) with extended universe stuff is that, in this case, Apone's team couldn't have seen these aliens before. The chatter in the atmosphere processor seemed to indicate no recollection of these creatures, or of their behaviors. They sounded surprised "...they're coming out of the walls...". They would also have known not to go in without munitions if they had even a LITTLE bit of experience fighting them. :)
That's fan fiction for you: never letting a little thing like continuity get in the way of the desire to jump on a bandwagon.
@Geroff Milan The fact that you ACTUALLY think that continuity should just be ignored sometimes and that characters doing things that make sense in their universe is "fan fiction," makes you unfit to carry on a conversation about objective quality.
Like the IP as much or as little as you want, but your like, or dislike, is irrelevant to whether or not certain objective qualities are "good" or "bad." For example, race/gender swapping existing characters, altering original visions yet still try to tickle nostalgia of people who grew up with the original characters, is a perfect example of emotion over quality. Imagine if a movie about the Holocaust only had Asians in the death camps. Someone might LOVE that, but it's objectively bad and ridiculously stupid.
"Hey sarge, you'll get lip cancer smokin those" 😂
R.I.P. Al Matthews and thank you for your service to your country.
Apone could be funny and serious at the same time. He was awesome and I'm sad. I hope J. Cameron makes this next alien movie , quickly, before we lose Michael Biehn and Sigourney Weaver.
We think these actors and actress' can live forever but they're not immortal and can suffer the same as we do with age.
A CGI film a la the Starship Troopers series (or films) would be my way to go.
Could bring back as many original actors as possible to reprise their roles, without expecting aging actors and actresses to do backflips on camera.
