      I'm not an especially big fan of Looting-FPS games so I never was really into Borderlands. But Randy Pitchford is surrounded by so much negativity, hell, this man is such a PR-Desaster that he is the second reason I will never get into Borderlands and not into the work of Gearbox in general. I know it's extreme but I always have his funny face before my eyes and the scandalous stories revolving around him. Every other CEO would be long gone from his position but he somehow managed to rescue himself after each of these scandalous stories, one worse than the other.

    I worked in QA on this game, and I am credited in it. Its true looked so much better when it was first brought to QA but it didn't run well at all on consoles so the graphics were lowered substantially to meet FPS requirements. (As mentioned in this video) Gearbox wouldn't touch the code, especially for the AI, and told us so. We reported on all the bugs in the game and a lot didn't get fixed before release. Timegate really are the ones that made the majority of the game with Gearbox focusing on Borderlands 2, some minor changes, and the DLC. Sega wanted this title out as fast as possible because it had been stuck in development Hell for years at that point, and Gearbox were the ones on the hook for it, and it was pushed out for release. A lot of really great people were involved in this title, and it really just didn't come together well for a variety of reasons.

      I'm not saying its QAs fault. I just want to know how this got past QA? You just have to play for a few minutes and you see something isn't right with the AI. As a serious alien franchise geek, it was a roller-coaster of emotion.
    I was very active on the gearbox forums at the time and absolutely hyped by the detail of the set design, props, weapons, and the lore behind those props and weapons. But there where obvious gaping issues with the characters and some of the plot details.
    For instance the fact it took a petition started by Moosh and signed by most of the marines in the movie to get gearbox to add female marines to the multiplayer. That's not a "diversity" thing, just being accurate to the source material.
    Then the game came out. The loresuits were everywhere. The media was ripping the game apart. And the slow drip of leaked information started coming out. I spoke to a lot of devs in that time, particularly Timegate, and it was weird how some absolutely adored the franchise (like the Timegate employee I spoke to who claimed to be behind the pixel art "thanks for playing" easter egg in the dlc) and a lot seemed to absolutely loath it. A couple of the gearbox staff kept talking about how great borderlands was (which was always going to fall flat for me as I've disliked the series since the first one).
    The DLC further demonstrated that there was some serious love and some absolute apathy. The entire singleplayer dlc is a marked improvement on the main game (still got lots of issues). And Bug Hunt is the best multiplayer alien experience out there... On some maps. It's terrible on others.
    And then Gearbox lost their last ounce of sympathy from me when they deleated the A:CM forum entirely.

    Their first mistake was having the game set in Hadley's Hope after the events of Aliens. Especially how they acted like the nuclear explosion did nothing.

    • @filmbuff2777
      @filmbuff2777 3 года назад +3

      Well, for me it was a lot easier to believe this than the crap in Alien 3. The Queen could NOT have layed an egg on the Sulaco, but to have Ripley conveniently being the sole survivor of the crash, & conveniently being implanted with a queen embryo was far too contrived.
      I looked at the situation in ACM similar to The Thing game. The Outpost 31 base shouldn't have been standing like it was, but it made for a great atmospheric experience.

    • @JediPloys
      @JediPloys 3 года назад

      @@filmbuff2777 I agree that Alien 3's was way too contrived and convenient, but the difference between The Thing game and ACM was that: While you visited Outpost 31, it was still burned to the ground. You spend a majority of the game at other arctic facilities. ACM has you spend a huge chunk of the game at Hadley's Hope, a place that was annihilated by a nuclear explosion that Bishop described: "In 19 minutes this area's going to be a cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska." Considering he's an android, I don't have much reason to think that was an exaggeration.
      You could find a cheeky way to explain that _some_ parts are still somewhat in tact, but ACM acts like this super nuclear explosion did literally nothing to Hadley's Hope. It looks exactly the same as it did when the Sulaco marines showed up for the first time in Aliens. It'd be like in The Thing game if you went to Outpost 31 for a good 2/3rds of the game and everyone mentioned that it was burned to the ground, but it looked exactly how it did before anything happened in the movie, except for a few references, like the smashed radio room and the revolver.

Three years later, I picked up a brand new sealed copy for £2 from GAME (they were practically giving it away) and found, to my utter disbelief, that the multiplayer was actually supremely addictive! It was just so much FUN! (I think a different developer did the multiplayer section?) So I finally got my money's worth (lol!) out of A:CM!
