The Curious History of Alien Isolation

As of the early 2010s first-person survival horror games were a rarity, a space most notably occupied by the likes of indie hit Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Triple-A games in the genre, the Resident Evils, Silent Hills, and Dead Spaces of the world, had yet to move beyond the tried-and-true third-person perspective. Change peeked over the horizon by the middle of the decade, though, with another indie success, Outlast, and Hideo Kojima’s P.T. demo laying the foundation for a new wave of survival horror. Little did anyone know, an Alien project based on Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic would also move the needle.
The ambitions powering Creative Assembly’s vision for Alien: Isolation were grounded by far more than a shift in perspective. In using the original film as a stepping stone, Isolation tread ground that no other Alien-based video game had dared traverse. Previous interactive adventures through the sci-fi universe placed special emphasis on the action-oriented qualities of James Cameron’s 1986 sequel. Such titles supplied players with advanced firearms and assigned the arduous task of killing Xenomorphs-Alien: Isolation did neither. Creative Assembly instead encouraged players to avoid the creature, hide from and fear it, even distract it when necessary. But fully understanding the core of the experience they wanted to create proved a formidable undertaking for the team.
Four years of production were devoted to the project. A new engine and major gameplay changes imposed several challenges on a studio that lacked a survival horror pedigree. To the delight of many an Alien fan, however, those obstacles culminated in a one of a kind exploration of the seminal franchise.
This is the history of Alien: Isolation.

It is my favourite video game experience ever and even after clogging up over 250 hours on it and learning how it works and how its elements come together, amazingly it is still incredibly effective!

Its just too bad that it was too long, had long stretches of nothing made worse by having to sneak constantly, alot of backtracking and. the AI that hilariously people jerk off about while ignoring that FREQUENTLY the Alien AI would either get stuck in a loop or, outright break forcing you to quit and reload.

@@lutherheggs451 I do agree that while the Alien can be unnecessarily aggressive at times, it's still one of the best enemy AIs out there even compared to ones today. It was pathetic, like he is.
IGN later had a lady from Australia explain why she loved ALIEN Isolation - a sort of hidden apology. But not a re-review or anything like that. I did enjoy Lucy's version of reviewing the game though - it's a shame she wasn't the one to do the original review.
5.9? - even the soundtrack should raise it to a 7 at least!
Other reviewers - such as Gamespot - made it their Game of the Year!

Sometimes it's best to leave the perfect organism alone. Though recently I've listened to three amazing aliens audio books. "Alien out of the shadows" "aliens river of pain" and a aliens 3 book based off of a script never used and in my eyes is cannon

    • @jazzx251
      @jazzx251 2 года назад

No - but it left it's mark so severely that the new Alien game references Sevastapol and the events of the, now canon, Alien Isolation - some of it's enemies are basically Working Joes ... [the game itself looks like a mutliplayer attempt to put Colonial Marines right - set in the Alien Isolation universe, from what I've seen]
For me - Alien Isolation is up there ... my favourite continuous story:
Alien > Alien Isolation > Aliens

I would hold my breath playing this game, it was so good! The first long stretch with the Xenomorph after you find the flight recorder was one of the most tense gaming moments I've ever had the pleasure of playing. I've also never seen a more stressful saving mechanic in any game.

Not only it suceeds in any area, but this game is also the only “movie to game” that actually captures the exact vibe of the movie and also adds to it without detatching itself a single time, and with it being horror I think thats an extra hard theme to pull off.

As a HUGE fan of outlast and other survival horror games, this is by far my favorite. The atmosphere, sound design, and general feel of this game was AMAZING. You DID NOT run you DID NOT fight. You went into every single life as of it was your last and it's one of a kind. Genuinely I can not think of a game/movie on such a atmospheric tone.

One of the best games ever made! I just wished there'd be an option which would mix things up, like:
-unpredictable Android routines (Working Joes investigate all accessible areas, all nearby terminals, cover longer distances, search near phone booths if they lost the player, fixing and guarding routines because they are security and maintenance bots)
    -Smarter human AI
    -more NPCs on higher difficulties
-Heavy Joes arriving like the light version per Transit or elevator if you linger too long
-Joes being able to rip you out of vents if you are close enough
Small tweaks like that would keep it a lot more interesting, but if you finished the game 7 times on all difficulties, you just kinda know how to avoid most hostile creatures and robots

Great video on a great game! Alien Isolation proves how trends play a very pivotal role in entertainment even if creators don't want to admit it. The trend in this case being most survival horror were in third person at the time, but Alien Isolation decided to buck that trend, and here we are, almost a decade later and now first person horror (RE; Amnesia) is all the rage again. Ironic, and I'm sure we'll swing back to third person as the '20s go on. Keep up the great work!
