- An interesting phenomenon occurs when narcissists are in the physical presence of, or presented with the topic of cats. Nothing else seems to bring about rapid exorcism that a discussion on cats with a narcissists (check the comments if you don't believe me). Many have noted that the narcissists they've known both have and love cats, and I accept this to be true, however, what has been true for me is an instant and instinctual repulsion from cats by narcissists. The narcissist I know had a strange string of cat misfortunes around him. My cat got sick and died, another friend had a cat that just up and ran off after the guy started coming around, and it never came back. AND a girl he was dating had a cat killed, she thought by an owl. Narcissist energy is toxic, and cats try to protect you because if they choose you they really love you--and yes, they see demons...

Yes, and they don't allow anyone to control them. My father hated cats. He said they are selfish creatures...yeah, because they put themselves first and don't look to their owners like they are Gods. I know a narcissist who not only has 3 indoor cats, but cares for a feral cat colony. Probably just cover for her narcissistic tendencies. She does get angry when the cats don't "perform" the way she wants.
I can see narc's liking dogs, because they worship their owners and they can be very dependent. Btw, I typed my 1st sentence before she even mentioned dogs in her vid.

My narcissist has had cats her entire life, as well as dogs. But I firmly believe that this is part of her mask. The animals are accessories to prove that she is such a good and loving person. She has had more than one die of neglect and surrendered others to the pound knowing they would be euthanized.

Yup, they are similar. My old best friend had two, they were like her. Think of it, a dog is loyal and loving, a cat is selfish. I like both but love dogs better because they're sweeter and more cuddly at least the breeds I like.

You don't own or pick the cat. The cat owns or picks you. Cats can be as loyal as a dog. I actually had to tell one cat that was hanging on after being diagnosed with cancer that he didn't need to stay for me anymore and that he could go. He meowed in a way he never had before letting me know he understood. He passed 1/2 hour later.

The only way out is to love and accept yourself, to love yourself out of that pattern, so that like will attract like and attract someone
loving and compassionate. Deserving would be the second step so that we can allow the love. The third step is to believe that we don't have to heal somebody to have love.

Many people who do evil things like this or end up as serial killers were horribly abused as kids though. They didn't just wake up one day and decide to kill people. I can understand why they'd only love animals. People can really suck!

I am kind of like that. But mainly because a lot of humans are so needlessly $hi++y others. I'm more likely to talk to a stray animal than a random human, for fear of what the human might do or say to me.

That's me! Cats approach me in the street and will follow me. I think they know a cat person instantly. They probably can read the facial expression and eye contact made and know they are safe around that human, but not with that one because he's a c*unt.

My narc is a cat groomer and we have 2 cats and a dog. The key here is that she is very adept at controlling cats and has been called "The Cat Whisperer" because of her control over the animals. The key is she has the ability to control them. I do fully understand and find your logic sound. Narcissists hate what the can't control.

Cats do run up to people they trust and responds to being petted. Dogs are rigid and look away when you pet them. Dogs are very unresponsive to human touch. Dogs are so loyal you always have to restrain them from not running away from you.

My narc hated cats and would not let me have one. I realize now my narc family members also hated cats and one of these people would actually try to hurt my cats when she thought no one was looking. Cats can also be fiercely loyal and protective over their human. One of my cats ultimately gave his life trying to protect me from being attacked by a narc that was a coward and would only try to physically harm me when I was medicated with heavy sleep medication. It's interesting that I have always identified with cats. Have you ever watched a cat watching something that you can't see? I believe all cats have one foot here and one foot in another realm and they see and hear things we cannot.

Cats are so aware, I've noticed that cats don't usually close their eyes they just rest them by partially closing their eyes, there is a lot to learn from cats.

My narc told me I couldn't have a cat. A million bs reasons why I couldn't have one. I debunked them all. And I got a cat. The kids love the cat. The cat loves the kids. He makes himself look crazy. I never understood why he hated cats. He has no cat based trauma. It really is because a cat is independent and has its own brain and will.this makes so much sense
The problem I have with cats is that they kill my other animals that do nothing but sit in their cages. My scorpion, tarantula, and even my clown fish🥺 but I guess those kind of animals you don’t consider pets you can love😭

That's logically incorrect. If all narcs hate cats, it does not necessarily follow that all those who hate cats are narcs. Also, if all narcs hate cats, you're not a narc if you love cats.

The narc fiance used to prepare food for my cat, brush her and take pics of her all the time. He had an unusual curiosity towards her but in the end he said he would kill me and my cat. My pet didn't ask to be put in that crazy making situation. I didn't know what a narcissist was at the time I got involved. I know much more now. His threat made it easier for me to be done with him for good. I thank God for protecting us both. If the narc in your life threatens you, your children or your pet, please believe them and find the strength to let them go.

I actually had a longtime male friend who was a flaming narcissist who loved cats. But it was because he loved the challenge of dominating them through head games and torture!
I hate my cat because she won't leave me alone. Follows me around every where, pees and poops on my room mates bed when ever I put her down from furniture or prevent her from eating my food. She would probably pee on mine if I would let her inside my room. In conclusion I hate her because she's disobedient and rude.
One time I was in a grocery store (in the united states) checking out and the clerk saw that I was buying cat food and he commented that he hates cats. I asked him why and he answered "because they are too independent." I answered, "Hmm. Isn't independence something we value in this country? Don't we celebrate Independence Day?" He was speechless.
That said, I have met narcs who have cats and they tend to neglect them, make them stay outside even in winter, that kind of thing. One of them laughed at me when I suggested building a cat enclosure to keep her cat safe. Her cat was hit by a car a month or so later and then she used that to feel sorry for herself. Another one bought a very expensive breed of cat (if narcs have cats, they seem to prefer expensive ones and would never adopt from a shelter as they would consider that "beneath them") and then complained endlessly about the cat's behavior. So maybe that was a ticket to more narcissist supply?
Some people buy pets so they can take care of something that loves them not take care of something that only likes them bc you feed them and clean up their shit. I see cat owners as the wife of a wife beater. She cooks and cleans, he beats her, but she stays and continues to love him not matter how many people think it’s abusive. My friends have all types of scars, ruined furniture, allll types of shit their cats do to them and they still worship the ground they walk on. Narcissist like people who are submissive and weak minded…so do cats. All I’m saying is if I want something that’s independent I’d get a roommate or a boyfriend or a human friend but if I’m paying money for a living thing that makes my house smell like shit, ruins my furniture etc….it better show some gd appreciation or start paying rent.
I don't know if every narc is a cat hater but I know that when we got married my ex narc husband claimed he loved cats and we had a cat but when we got divorced I took the cats. My daughter begged him for a cat at his place so he got her 2 cute little kittens but when the girlfriend with 2 large dogs moved in he threw the kittens outside. He told our daughter the cats were "sick" and had to live outside. He just didn't want to bother with them. One of the cats got run over and the other one sat outside meowing wanting back in for the longest time before she disappeared too. Now he claims he is a huge dog lover. He only loves whatever animal will get him supply from his girlfriend. It is sick.
Good riddance to him. I feel sorry for any animal that he comes across :(

I've been in a relationship with a Narcissist for a bit over 6 years, He loves cats. He is a covert Narc. He has actually made one of our cats so codependent on him that she is constantly looking for attention like a dog! I am a cat lover due to their independent and almost unpredictable nature. He gives more physical attention to this cat then myself....it's sick and I've dealt with embarrassment in admitting my discomfort about this. A grown man who passionately spoons a cat rather than his own partner....idk it's weird. I could go on and on but I just wanted to give my experience. Coverts are very sneaky and under the radar. Maybe Malignant/Overt Narcs would more likely fit this trait.

I LOVE cats! For JUST that reason: they are their own little selves. They don't care what YOU say, lol. I sometimes joke that the cat has to pencil you into their schedules, lol. You can't really easily push a cat around. You have to go with the flow of the cat to get along with them. I mean yeah don't let them scratch up the furniture or climb the curtains but otherwise, yeah, you just gotta go with the flow with a cat :^)

I can see why narcissists would hate cats; they probably prefer dogs. But it doesn’t hold true in every case. My brother and his wife are narcissists, and they like cats.
My roommate is a narc. She has a cat and talks to the cat like it's her boyfriend. She's obsessed with the cat. She buys expensive food and toys for the cat. Her world revolves around the cat. But the cat hates her and only goes to her for food and the litter box. The cat would follow everyone else in the house but always runs away from her.

Narcs love cats! There's no deep level of Real Intimacy required, as with another human! Cats (& other pets) require very little reciprocation in return for giving the narc the exact pleasure, attention, or affection (supply) they want or need on demand. And when the narc Don't Need supply or their feelings coddled, they simply ignore the animal or shoe it away...kinda like how they discard humans....but of course, the pets aren't devastated & are always, unconditionally There for the narc. Win/Win.

This is my girlfriend. She told me she prefers cats over dogs because of this same reason.
Being raided in an abusive household, my cats were the only ones that gave me love.

Every narcissist I know abuses cats. My current roommate is a narcissist who got a cat that was given to her and she tries to dominate this cat and abuses her.
You couldn't be more wrong. I've lived with cats all my life, and all the people I've met who hate cats were always the ones who had serious behavioral issues (arrogance and antisocial behavior) or were narcissists.

And I may a part of the minority but I believe that cats are SO innocent. They're incredibly smart, some more so than others, but they're animals after all, and they're so lovely and innocent. Even the 'worst' cats that I had were only acting out because either they were scared or because they were being mistreated at that time (physically insecure and in pain). ALL the cats I've had have been loving.
Ofcourse, there are levels in that too.

Mine had 3 dogs, 3 cats, fish tanks. He seemed to love them more than people, but he said things sometimes that made me wonder. "If they get the mouse poison, that's their fault for being stupid" "if she pees in my house again, she's going to be put down. I won't have that!" He never did those things, but he really made me think he was capable of just getting rid of them or if they die, oh well.
The natc I knew mostly had dogs, but got a cat for reasons he wouldn't disclose. He was mean to it and would curse at. The cat would come to me a lot because I actually petted it, played with it, and showed it some love when I was there.
If another person feeds your cat, that cats leaving you for sure. If a dog gets fed by another person, your dogs sticking with you. It’s like they don’t have a sense of loyalty.

LOL! I have always had cats that would do what I want when I talk to them. I can't order them around, but I can request that they follow me and they do. Of course, I'm usually calling them for food. I also have a dog -- before I would have chosen one, a dog that needed a home. That was one of the best decisions I ever made for different reasons. I have to get out and walk him so he prevents me going into a reclusive depression in the winter. He also barks when someone comes near the house, giving me an early alert to company. He loves the cats too.

My dad, even at 70+ still goes through long periods of punishing my mum & younger sibling financially because the dog didn't get bathed/fed at a particular time. Of course he never raised a finger to do it. Just lapped up the attention the dog offered. He plays with it like he never did with his kids. The other female Narc does same. So mean to people, kids included but talks to her dogs in baby babble.

So true. My sister got a dog before I went NC. I would come over with my son and he would jump all over us, scratch us up, cause actual injury, and if you so much as tried to push the dog down she would get so angry and start yelling that we couldn't treat her dog like that. She treated that dog with more respect than her husband, son, everyone. Crazy lady ... so glad I'm so far gone from that.

My ex, who is a malignant narc used to place bait, such as a fish head, in our front garden, after it would get dark and then he'd lie down with an air gun waiting patiently until some poor cat got enticed by the bait. Then the narc would gleefully pull the trigger and shoot. I remember how he walked into the house triumphantly with one such dead cat like he had won massive trophy. This was one of the very sick things that the malignant narc did. Btw, this sick idiot owned a rottweiler who would howl in fear when the sick narc picked up a broom for whatever purpose!!!

They sometimes pretend to love cats (because some of them know this knowledge that cat people are not narcissists so they want to appear normal by having cats) but it's always just a facade.

My ex used to say about one of my three cats 'i hate the way she looks at me ' lol .She was a stray who i took in , he later ended up bundling her in his car and dumping her at the side of a road on his way to work on morning . I was heartbroken and never saw her again. God repays. About 1 week after this his car broke down in the exact place he left her. I don't believe in concequences.Be blessed.
Based on the comments below, I'd maybe surmise that other people's cats may detect narcs' spirits, but not narcs' own cats with whom they have a bond.
I knew a narcissist that hated cats and never would Pet or interact with my cats. (I have a multi-cat household.) I knew another narcissist who owned a cat and did show affection on a regular basis for her. the way he went about petting the cat was always clunky and over-stimulating, but, in general, he seemed to enjoy the cat. not overly adoring but I didn't consider him to be a neglectful or abusive owner. he even petted my own cats. yet, I recall how he'd attribute her hunting abilities (like chasing squirrels but never catching them lol) to his own attributes. Controlling people hate (and allergic to) cats. The crazy lady I used to rent a room with, like dogs, but hated cats. She said she hates cats because they are selfish. She was overly nice to me in the beginning, but I could tell she's controlling, ended up violence toward me, before I found another place.
The irony is, she works as a mental counselor.

joan baczek Sorry I don't meant to offend you. I believe there are 2 types of narcissist. The lighter narcissist (who still have some sanity) are allergic to cats. But the heavy super duper screwed up narcissist are not allergic to cats anymore, because they screweup the cats' intuition as well.
The wild cats in nature have good instintcs. But the pet cats, they lost their natural instict, if they are manipulated by the narcissists.
But as far as the controlling people allergic to cats. That's just the truth. There are many examples already. Because the cats are not controllable.

As far in your heart beat stop analogy, I would say, in nature, everything must be healthy. No one should be allergic to anything. If people have allergy to something at all, it is because some thing is screwed up some where, somehow.

thiery572 im allergic to cats because immune disorders like lupus and others run in my family, all my aunts on my mom's side have immune disorders and i have raynards syndrom. people are not allergic to cats themselves its the dander which is nothing but skin cells and cat spit from them licking them selves. i hate my son's cat cuz he is unpredictable and at times violent with me, yet i am not allergic to his dander. i loved my cat nalla and i would get hives from her and have to use an inhaler. so the allergy theory and narcissism don't correlate. i also have had a dog like my face and broke out in hives, yet another dog does the same thing and i didn't have a reaction. allergies is actually your immune system working rather than not working. people are allegic to peanuts because of the fungus that grows on the peanut not the peanut itself--what causes fungus is bad storage before sold to the customers. and the sudden explosion of wheat allergies only exploded when wheat processing was sped up and gmo's were introduced to get bigger faster crops. so yeah allergies are a clue that something is wrong but its not the person having the allergy that is bad. that's like saying its your fault a shooter killed you cuz you let the bullet cause you to bleed. i will buy you ideas about allergies when you can control an automatic function like stopping your own heart at will and re-starting it at will

So you are not physically allergic to cats, but psychologically allergic to cats, because of its traits. Later on from psychologically, you will develop physical allergy to cats.
So the nice cat that you like is actually the "unpredictable" one. And the mean one that you don't like actually is the "predictable" one.
Things are not always as it seems. There's a deeper cause there. On your particular case, I don't believe you are completely innocent.

thiery572 i think i over exaggerated my feelings about milo, i don't hate him i just get very angry when he hurts me. and its not so much unpredictability that bothers me its the cats sudden aggression, and he always bites me in the part of my body that hurts too. one day i had a flare up of tmj and he came out of no where while i was resting and nipped my face.i can just walk by him and suddenly he issinking his fangs into the back of my legs to the point i now think i have an infection. im allergic to dander, if the cats biological make up is one way the dander doesn't bother me. and like i said and you didn't hear the cat i don't like im actually not allergic to so what is happening to me is opposite your theory. i fight back by putting milo in a time out in my son's room and also to protect my body from his fits. im not controlling in a bad way i am protecting my boundaries from a narcissistic cat. when he is done with his fit he is allowed out and he is nice for a bit. the one thing that made me laugh so hard even though i was so upset with milo for hurting me. and my son just didnt' believe me at first. so im on my bed with this big black cat just hanging on to my arm with his fangs sunk in the more i pulled away the more he shook his head and clawed at me. i finally yelled out "CHRIS" and immediately milo let go and quickly went to the foot of my bed acting all innocent, which was funny but made me definitely not trust this cat.--he knows he is doing wrong when he hurts me but keeps doing it, i don't think that is normal cat behavior.-to knowingly hurt a care giver
People have looked at me like i was a complete wierdo because i had a cat and i like them.
My ex liked cats. He even rescued some kittens in a parking lot once. But, just like anything and everything else, it was a moment he could use to receive praise.

My first love of a pet was a cat name otis. Me and my sister both had a cat. They were old and eventually left and didnt come back. I was too you to understand. But as we grew uo we had both dogs and cats. I had a chocolate lab name "Hershey". I was very very attached to her. I cant tell the rest of the story cuz its too painful but i grew up as a dog person. I think our preference for cats or dogs can have a lot to do with our childhood experiences.
Dogs are really cool because theyre a pack animal. Theres a reason why we call dogs "mans best friend". Thats because we bred them into our families. There is a deep connection there. I hate seeing dogs live theyre whole lives chained up, desperate for that feeling of connection. Dogs are awesome

i know a narcissist who had 5 and sometimes more cats. his house smelled like urine, only had 3 liter boxes in a closet between 2 bedrooms and anyone who complained about the smell got further abuse. he even took to pouring his own urine on my sons bed and anything under the bed then try to blame it on the cats, when a cat cant get between the box spring and plastic storage boxes yet there was liters of urine in the depressions of the box lids of these boxes that were wedged under the box spring. he was lifting the box spring pouring the urine then laying the box spring back down.

I know a major narc & she has had 3 cats...1 at a time. She overtly controls & fusses over the cat ...dressing it up. Putting food coloring in its fur. Dominating the animal(s)... Talking about HER cat non stop yet aloof towards other cats. Know it all attitude as if cat expert. Photographing & talking about her cat incessantly( ad nauseam) Walking it on harness. Monitoring. Issues a long, high-maintenence, ridiculous list-of complex instructions of special care HER cat needs when she gets my Son to watch her cat ( she's my ex husband's narc girlfriend) and she gets her Mom to pay for exorbitant vet bills for said cat. Her cats all his, bite & scratch. Only cats I ever encountered with nasty, uncalmable tempers were hers.They were all neorotic & overtly handled & controlled. ONE cat she feigns sdoration over dies & she promptly replaces it & never mentions previous cat(s) again. To her, cat is accessory & utility through which she garners attention for her SELF. Does not like others to pet or pick up her cat.
Cats are drawn to me. I can tell you how many strays I brought home to my mom when I was younger. She would always find them a great home though. We had about 6 cats when I was a kid. I’m more of a cat person than I am a dog person tho. I never knew why they were drawn to me though but now I do. I guess it was because I loved them and they felt that I was worthy of there love in return. Thanks so much, I learned a lot from this video.

My ex (a full blown narcissist) did for sure hate cats...he was very mean and cruel to my cats. But one of my son's girlfriends who is also a full blown narcissist....claims she loves cats, she has a full back tattoo of the Cheshire cat from the movie Alice in wonderland tattooed on her back (by the way that cat represents the Devil). That's amazing. I did wonder that myself, as several narcs I've known have always had dogs and didn't get along with cats. They don't actually treat their dogs very nicely either; not seeming to enjoy them as companions but just something to have as possessions and boss about. One once said to me that dogs are more intelligent because they obey. Really???? LOL!

I really do not like cats and do not consider myself a narcissist 😔 my daughter has a cat and it’s a tortoiseshell cat that is EXTREMELY verbal and that drives me nuts!!! I enjoy other animals like dogs and rabbit and yeah, they are a lot of work but cats....I don’t know about the control factor, that’s strange but makes sense. I’m an empath and tarot card reader and medium, Cancerian woman which makes me a nurturing and down to earth human. I wouldn’t say I “hate” cats, I just don’t have an affinity toward them. 🥰

Love it, so true. My dad was a serious narcissist and he hated cats. Incidentally, he was obsessed with power and control like all narcissists. He even bought a book about power and control. I just rescued a stray and I love having a pet whose affection I have to earn. I can see why narcissists can't deal with that. They can't handle rejection!
I know this man has NPD. While he doesn't have a cat, he appears to like mine, I have 3 indoor cats. They really like him too. My dog just loves him.
My grown kids like him because he gives me money and I buy food with it. There is something seriously wrong with this man, my kids think I should ignore his rudeness and keep being friends with him. I went NC last January, but recently started talking with him. He was on his best behavior, then right back to the same old crap.

TRUE!! Mine never actually said he hates them, but was quite obvious with my two cats I brought into picture. He likes dogs, however, not someone who is caring of others. Dogs need care, but he really has issue with taking care of anything. Everything and being is part of his "set", used for attention in one way or another. He is ok with not controlling everything AS LONG AS they serve him in some way. Once you are useless in his world or need help in crisis situation that needs discipline, effort, caring to remedy...you are seen as just in his way.

My narc was a cat person. They said they liked how cats were "selfish, self-centered and murderous". They said if you were suddenly smaller than them they would kill you. I love all animals but horses and dogs are my favorite.

Interesting to hear about him! They are usually quite cruel toward cats. I completely agree with you; anyone who says they hate either is a major red flag and cause to flee from them immediately. To me, it's a sign their empathy chip is missing.
I'm an empath and I don't like dogs. That doesn't mean I would hurt them or want to see them suffer. I just personally don't like them. They annoy me. With the exception of a few very well behaved ones I've seen but I've never had any luck. I always get the ones that want to chew up all my rugs and flower beds or pee on my indoor rugs and puke on my sofa, so I've given up on them. They are not for me. But I adore cats, I have 3, and birds have 1 and two adult iguanas, one is 14 years old. She is my baby ; ). My husband has a male Shih Tzu who is VERY stinky, even 2 days after a bath and hair cut.

This is very interesting because I work for a lady who is a Narcissists. She has cats but only for killing mice. They stay outside and she doesn't show them affection in fact she tells people she's "allergic" to cats. I love cats and all animals and I won't tolerate anyone abusing animals or watching an animal suffer.

Narcissistic people do not hate cats... They'll acquire a cat if it makes themselves seem more appealing/attractive. They'll either be super controlling over the cat and keep it like a prisoner or, neglect the cat most of the time only regarding the cat when they want to impress someone or have a guest in their home... Either way the cat is merely there as a "prop" as part of the image they're trying to portray (look at how caring I am, I rescued this cat, look at how cute we are together etc) an intuitive person will notice the narcissists lack of connection with the cat by the cat's behaviour, possibly squirming to get away from the forced petting and phoney displays of companionship of the narcissist as they lay their 'pet lover' act on a little too thick. Meanwhile the litter tray needs changing and water bowl needs to be cleaned. 😾😡
A narc I knew got married to a woman with two beloved cats. The very first thing he did after moving in with her was kill her cats and throw the bodies in some bushes. He told me he did it in a roundabout way and asked if I wanted to go to the bushes to see their bodies. He told me he "let them out by mistake". Then said he "found their bodies". He was very excited by dead animals for some reason. He took his adolescent son to see the dead cats in the bushes.
I forgot to add, that I visited a friend for a week and her cat litter stink something terrible. The litter burn my eyes for hours until I left her place of residence. They're very unsanitary, and I just can't see myself cohabitating with something so disgusting.
I unknowingly was dating a narcissist. Originally he claimed he was allergic to my cat. I told him she wasn't going anywhere. His allergies subsided and he moved in with me. My cat began acting out doing things out of her ordinary. She ultimately moved out and moved in with my upstairs neighbors of her own free will. I could no longer contain her inside. She was an indoor cat since birth. Hindsight is 20/20. She obviously knew something I didn't.
THIS is interesting!!!! I used to think that I could not stand cats til I realized I was misunderstanding them and then realized: I am cat-like. I used to think cats were stuck up lol and I've heard that's what I give off until you get to know me. At some point I paid attention to cats and was like: they're ALRIGHT they just keep to themselves and love on who they're truly connected to. That's me😂😂😂. My ex wife Narc, owned a cat and unfortunately in our divorce i lost the cat. She definitely liked dogs more. However. all ive learned here has been helpful and spot on.
I’ve met people who don’t like cats because cats usually don’t respect boundaries. I’ve got friends with nice things and expensive furniture and they said it was easy to train their dog to stay on its pet furniture and off the people furniture but they tried a cat and the cat would ignore its tower, toys and scratchpads and would go for the furniture no matter how many times they tried to redirect it.
We’ve got our first cat and it was very easy to get him to stay off the furniture.
So idk maybe our experience is different as all cats are different but I wouldn’t call my friends narcissists bc they want their furniture to be preserved lol

It’s one thing to not want a cat of your own but to go the extent of using the word “HATE” with no explanation. To add to why a lot of narcs dislike pets in general is b|c it requires work. Pets require a giving spirit, which is not something narcs can do long term. Usually when they do have a pet it is like a toy for them, used to show off like an accessory and to devalue/discard humans.
