- In this video I discuss the sources and prices paid for two dozen inexpensive vintage watches including Seiko Bell-Matics, IWC, Omega, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Lanco, ETA, Eterna, Consul, Girard Perregaux, Bermi, and more. These are watches that I either have done restoration work on myself, paid to have revised (in the case of the Rolex), or plan to do restoration work on.
My past restoration work has included case cleaning, reluming, water sealing, and one complete rebuild (the IWC Cal 44). In the future I will continue to document my efforts, including mistakes, as I go deeper into movement cleaning and lubrication.

How come you bought all these watches many of which cost around a grand and you do not have a watchmaker"s lathe and a rollifit and you refused to buy a vibrating tool for 200 bux from the swiss Italian which was a good price.
I'm still trying to figure that out myself! 😂😂😂
@@IMakeWatches another blunder of yours - you went for the Bergeon staking tool instead of buying a whole superb second-hand domestic K&D inverto staking tool. THE LIMITED number of stakes you bought will not be sufficient. I have 6 staking tools and believe or not I have them all open when working on a watch. As to the 4,7 diameter - this was imposed by the US brands so every staking set here in Europe is also 4,7mm. Except for the French Manhora which is less. So keep this in mind because you have to buy a whole staking set and a jeweling tool at some point in time. You will see...
@@Qwerty-cb1ti I already bought two and a full box of punches and stakes. And a Horia tool. But six may take me a while!
@@IMakeWatches I knew it. Congratulations.
Enjoyed the video! I’ve been servicing/repairing watches I’ve had in a drawer for 20 years. I’m running out so now I need to buy more!! Addiction for sure!!
Thanks! What's your main resource for buying? (Just curious) Or are you still looking?
That Micosa deal is incredible that's a really sophisticated beauty for that amount. What a deal.
The daywheel slipping on your Bellmatic is probably caused by it becoming loose to its metal inner ring. The fix is to recrimp the ring to the daywheel. While repairing a Seiko I ran across a RUclips video detailing that common problem in vintage Seikos :) Thanks for sharing your sources!
Thanks! I'll check that out!
Hey thanks! I have the same problem. I don't have the skills to fix it, but it's good to know
Hi Dayton, really enjoy your videos, especially the longer ones...kind of relaxing when I am working. Thanks for sharing
Thank you! And thanks for subscribing!
Nice !!! Collection !! Thanks 😊 for showing us u watches tha are beautiful
Thanks for sharing your collection. You’ve got some cool pieces there!
Thanks again! Was it interesting to see the prices paid? It's a popular video and I think it's because people love to know what others paid - especially for inexpensive pieces where there's no real market except the latest auction price.
@@IMakeWatches I usually scout for watches locally and found a surprisingly great little network because a lot of "collectors" sell everything and start over when the scarecrows of relationship or bills are gone and paid for ...
I recently started looking more on eBay I made a couple of purchases but I usually find the same rare and funky watches by reverse image search and a bit of google translate work, I find the sames advertised on local marketplaces (Japan, East Europe, Switzerland etc) and then try to convince the original seller to sell me some of that good stuff...
Hi!
I am starting my own watch collection and i love yours 😍
I dont have a big fortune to spend and i love that there are 50s,60s and 70s beautiful watches very affordable.
Nice! Thanks for sharing and I'm glad that I can be an inspiration! There's no need to spend a lot of money if it's indeed the watches and not the money that you love. There's so much great quality and design available on the vintage market!
It's amazing how much the world of watches really opened up for me when i started learning to repair them myself ha.
I agree. I'm looking forward to doing another video where I open these up and talk about the differences and similarities in case materials, dials and movements.
How did u learn?
Beautiful watch collection, the quality of the vintage watches are beyond what is made today for a fraction of the price! 👌❤️👍
I agree!
Nice collection of vintage watches, especially those IWCs 👍
Thanks! I agree! I love 1950s and 1960s IWCs.
Thanks for sharing part of your collection, really some great watches you have there.
Thanks Pipo! I think I said I'm not a collector in these early videos but over a hundred watches later I probably have to admit that I am. That said, I keep going lower in terms of price because I perfer older non-working watches now!
That’s an awesome collection you have ❤
Thanks!
I love my Bell-Matic. So I love yours too. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Yes, Bell Matics are very high on my list of favorites! I like using the alarm setting as a passive timer. I set to to the current time when I start a project then check it to see how much time I've put into it... of course the real alarm is fantastic as well!
I'm Swiss and also buying and selling watches on Ricardo and I knew so many of the sellers you bought the watches from :-)
Hi Olaf! Nice meeting you! Do you happen to know the biggest fair in the Biel / Bienne area and when it is? I have the little red book but so many of the fairs are just listed as brocante's that it's difficult to spot the major watch fairs. What's your username on Ricardo? I'll check out your auctions. It would also be nice to meet you at a fair someday. If you see me let me know it's you!
Some nice watches. I liked the Patek movement . Looks like someone melted the case (yikes). I bet you paid more on shipping costs than on watches.Very enjoyable video!
Thanks! Mostly I buy in Switzerland (where I live) so the shipping is very low actually! As low as $2 and seldom more then $8! And next day, very secure! I just found a case that i think will be great for the Patek movement so that video is coming soon! Have a nice time in Mexico DF!
Interesting collection of timepieces, the only one I liked was that Datum, the were so many brands I hadn’t heard of, always nice to see a new collection away from my growing collection.
Absolutely loved it. Instant new sub. Cheers from Spain
Ha! Thanks so much! BCN, Cap de Creus, Madrid... Cheers from GVA!
Very enjoyable to watch thanks for your great advice
Thanks!
Just found your channel, great stuff. Now I am addicted to the ricardo website and have to register from Hong Kong!
Thanks! Let me know if I can help. Also check out this site: www.movengo.ch It's run by the owner of SwissTimeArts in Zurich who used to be my favorite seller on ricardo. It should be possible to register in Hong Kong. According to his offers shipping abroad starts from 40.- CHF
@@IMakeWatches thanks a lot!
Hi, the Junghans radio-controlled watch is a real cool watch
Thanks for your comment! I agree. It's currently in my top three (make that four) rotation - with my dad's Rolex, my $40 Swatch ETA 2841 stainless steel transparent caseback skeleton, and my Seiko Bell Matic.
I was looking at the Bellmatic from the Japanese guy. I got interested in them along with the Cricket. You have a great collection!
Thanks! Yes, I'd like to have an automatic Vulcain Cricket. I just looked at a nice one at Lohri in Zug last week and heard the alarm. It was a lot louder than my Bell Matics, which I like. Best buy alarm watches in person so you can have a listen unless you already know the model!
We have similar interests, I was heavily shopping for relatively vintage watches, which I got mostly off eBay. Got a nice 1940s/50s Eterna. Solid gold 1960s Omega Sea Master DeVille. Solid 18k IWC dress watch and Rolex Royal Precision both 1960s, both 1000.00 when I started heavy shopping around 2010. I also love vintage Japanese mechanical, especially Seiko (Grand and King for example), Citizen and Orient.
Hi Russell! Thanks for introducing yourself! Did you check the 40s/50s Eterna for radium lume? If it has lume does it still glow faintly in total darkness? Is there any lettering to the left and right of Swiss Made? T or R for example? I assume the Seamaster has Ts for tritium?
No glow and no lettering
@@russellalfonso2962 That's great if there's also no evidence of tiny dots or slots filled with paint in the hands or on the dial. Are the hands on both watches solid with no lume dots on the dials to be seen?
This was really educational and entertaining. I was sad to see that Ricardo won't ship outside of Switzerland so this source will be unavailable to most folks. Have you considered the business opportunity of reshipping? 😀
Thanks for your comment!
A fascinating collection and some top buying tips. Particularly liked the Micosa. Never heard of that company before, but then with the myriad defunct brands our there I suppose that's unsurprising.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, there were thousands of brands like Micosa over the years. All it took to create a watch brand (and for that matter all that it takes today) was to put a stock movement in a stock case with a brand name on the dial! Of course not every brand did that, but that was (and still is) the minimum effort required.
@@IMakeWatches One of my favourites in my collection is a late-40s (a guess) Bernex. Not a trace of that company last time I checked, but the AS movement still runs like a dream. Keep up the good work on old old watches.
350 $ for that beautiful Omega is incredible! Nice purchases.
Thanks! It had some deep gouges in the case and the wrong crystal but I changed the crystal and did my best to reduce the noticeability of the scratches in the case. Sometimes it's good to have a dinged up case so when you ding it yourself you don't feel so bad. 😂😂😂
Be careful with radium especially when the dial is open
Thanks for this comment! I agree 100% about being careful about radium. Anyone reading this that is thinking about opening any vintage watch, please take the time to research radium and get yourself an inexpensive Geiger counter before opening ANY vintage watch so that you know how to identify radium and how to protect yourself beforehand. Almost all watches before the 1960s had radioactive paint on the dials and hands, and that material is dangerous if ingested or inhaled, and it has often turned to a combination of dust and gas inside the watch. It's best to become an expert on this before you open the watch rather than after because the radium dust can get into your bones and stay with you the rest of your life if you're not careful.
Many thanks for sharing! Wow you like a mix of things! I’m in the UK. Do you think Ranfft and Ricardo are still ok and good for UK buyers? Do you find better prices on these sites compared to EBay? Ta.
Hi Boyd. Thanks for your comment and thanks for asking about Ranfft and Ricardo. Yes, I think they're both fantastic! Ricardo takes some time to set up with a foreign address and you need to ask the sellers if they'll ship out of Switzerland and for how much before you bid, but it's a great marketplace. Same with Ranfft. It's easier to start bidding on Ranfft but it's still a good idea to check out shipping out of Germany.
@@IMakeWatchesMany thanks for the info!
Great video
Thanks! And thanks for subscribing!
Where are you sourcing your bracelets from? The micosa is my favourite.
I've bought the all on Aliexpress: search stainless steel oyster bracelet. For leather the Aliexpress seller I've bought from is called "Maikes". The stainless steel bracelets and their sellers seem to come and go -- maybe they're selling overstock or something...
That Bermi has great potential, did you restore it?
Thanks. I cleaned up the case a bit but I haven't done anything with the movement. I do love the design and especially the clear caseback!
Hi sir I have some Seiko old watch .Seiko diver 150 m and other model
Nice! Do you like them? I love Seikos!😂
What cam system are you using to display the watches on screen like that?
Thanks for your question. I made this video about my camera system. Feel free to let me know if you have additional comments ideas or specific questions: ruclips.net/video/TaJCEfLfmWI/видео.html
@@IMakeWatches Thank you for this! Your setup is very good and your production value shows this quality.
Liked and subbed
"Bargain hunting" is my middle name ;)
What is that black disk you're putting the watches on that sends the image to a screen?
Thank you Sir Bargain Hunter! 🙏🏼 😂😂😂
Very nice watches ! Just wondering whether you would sell any of these watches ? I really liked few models & wondering if you sell any of them ?
Cheers !
Lahiru
Thanks a lot! I don't plan to sell them at the moment because my plan is to clean and lubricate most of them myself (after I'm comfortable that I have the tools and the skills to do so properly). I'll make an announcement on the channel if I ever do sell them.
How to purchase vintage watches from eBay pls guide me
Hi! Thanks for your comment / question. In general I don't recommend buying vintage watches on Ebay. I do it occasionally buy Japanese watches that are difficult to find in Switzerland on Ebay, but I rarely buy Swiss watches there, as I can find them much easier and at better prices here in Switzerland. I suppose one approach you could take is to focus on sellers in Japan, as there are a good supply of both Swiss and Japanese vintage watches in Japan!
is it a common problem for split stem winders separate . I have an IWC & Omega with with the split shaft failing. Any thought,s please .
I’m not sure. What calibers are your IWC and Omega? I’d like to do a video about split stems and ask viewers for their input. They are tricky but I personally love monocoque cases so it’s good to know as much as possible and not to be afraid of them.
@@IMakeWatches Hi from Australia. My IWC.is cal 8521. My omega I don't know. About the same age. When I first got the IWC the glass was smashed and winder missing. It was sorted with original parts that came from Canada. A few years later the winder stem came out . Got it sorted .2 week,s after adjusting a small time loss it's again come out . Whilst I got it back in it won't click home. I,m just a broken-down old tradie so I just don't know what to do next. The Omega is still with a watchmaker friend sorted it but now has failed again but is next to impossible to get hold of. But seems to know his stuff. Any suggestions please.
Yeah, the Datum gets a lot of comments for some reason. I guess it's that texture on the dial! Thanks for your comment!
Does a Vintage Gucci have any value?
I didn't know there were vintage Guccis. 😂😂😂
Im looking for a 1960 gold omega constellation mens watch
Can anyonegive me advice. Thanks
Try this site: www.ricardo.ch/de/s/Omega%20constellation
Id appreciate any help or advice. Cheers
How do you view that site in english. German, italian and french is all i see
I just use google to translate keywords. It's not easy but I learn a lot searching and getting lost in translation! 😂😂😂
I’m for business in Mexico City these weeks. Lots of Mido pretty cheap. What is your opinion on Mido timepieces?
Hi JC! Thanks for your comment / question! I think Mido is mostly ETA movements. I love ETA movements. They're great and easy to find parts for if you like the watch design! And cheap is always good! 😂😂😂 I love Mexico DF. Have you seen the movie Roma by Alfonso Cuarón about a family in the district of Roma in DF in the 1960s? It's a fantastic move. I spent some time in DF in the 80s. My girlfriend lived in Zona Rosa, which neighbors on Roma, and her life was very similar to the family in the movie with the maids and all that. I love that city! I bought a Joskes Mexican-made Jubilee bracelet for my Rolex 1603 in Mexico DF in 1987.
Oh interesting. I just walked through Roma today. Lots of people. I’ll have a look at that movie. Haven’t heard of it.
I really love Mido watches. I don’t believe they are appreciated in the US but they are loved in Mexico..👍
Mido multifort Great !!!!
i have one of those bellmatics u have and all together 7 of them... i need help with them, hopping you can help me
Thanks! I'm getting close to doing a video about my Bell-Matics. Lovely watches! I guess you know that already if you have seven of them! 😂😂😂
Hallo, plz l want 2 know do u speak German ?
No I don't speak German but you can turn on auto-translated subtitles if you'd like to read what I'm saying in German or any other major language.
i like 👍🏻
