@@nahwals Yeah it ignores wrangler shields. Basically the best reason to ever run it, the wrangler's healing downside actually comes into play due to you dealing full damage and he heals 1/3 of what he normally can. Especially good against wrangler mini spam too
The disguise's properties are about as consistent as whether or not weapons that allow you to crit or mini-crit under set circumstances can also randomly crit.
Fun fact about spy disguises and the Amputator taunt. If a red medic taunts with an amputator out and a blu disguised spy as a red spy is nearby it will cause the blu spy to have the blu amputator particle effect.
As the resident Dragon’s Fury enthusiast, I’m here to confirm that its faster fire rate on hit *does* work against buildings, making the Widowmaker not the only weapon to have its on hit effect work on buildings.
I was gonna say that stuff like Spies not building meters on some weapons was a good thing because there's like little to no likelihood the one with those weapons is going to even notice it, but then again you're also getting a direct benefit from something you aren't even aware you're doing to unfairly benefit yourself. Maybe spy immunity is a good thing, even if it's also talking about people who play spy.
I keep alt bound to disguising as a friendly Spy, which sets you to undisguised. This way if I bump a soldier while I'm cloaked and disguised, I can remove my disguise without having to swing a weapon, and use the knockback from the rocket to get out of the Soldier's guaranteed hit range. Using the knockback is pretty much the only way to survive being caught by decent Soldier while under cloak
It's my understanding that disguised spies are immune to knockback caused by damage, but not things that specifically cause knockback (airblast, shortstop shove, force of nature, loose cannon). It seems like those may be two different kinds of knockback in the code or something.
your comment remind soundsmith video but don’t know which one and only thing i can remember is the spy take no damage and get knockback from a sticky bomb
Squim as always providing us with mildly interesting videos. I love simple videos like this that are born out of a genuine curiosity from the creator, where they do the testing and make the video themselves because noone else has. Think like uncle Danes "Mr map size" video Keep it up, I love this stuff
I think it might have something to do with on hit vs damage dealt. I've noticed similar oddities with MvM tanks, where things like the phlogistinator and the soldiers banners build their meters when shooting them but things like the ubersaw and BFB don't. With the bonk scout, he's being registered as "hit", but obviously isn't taking any damage. So maybe some weapons, despite saying "on hit" in their descriptions like other weapons, aren't consistent with those other weapons and are instead tracking whether or not damage is dealt. Or maybe TF2 is a 15 year old pile of jank and different weapons being added at different times by different people results in some unusual behavior.
I think the main reason Spy's disguise is so inconsistent is because what does and doesn't affect him when disguised is done on a case-by-case basis instead of a global function to prevent/allow effects to carry over when disguised, so the devs literally just forgot to change functionality to account for disguised spies for most weapons.
It's almost like effects should be given a global function instead of maunally writing every single possibility so that it's inconsistent, time consuming to write, update, and inevitably doomed to contradict itself.
I think the black box does not give health back because the amount of health you gain is based on how much damage you do to the opponent, not if you hit them; if the black box dos 0 damage, you will gain back 0 health. The spy gets damaged by the black box, therefore you gain back health. TL;DR black box has a on damage effect, not a on hit effect, so it works differently
It feels like instead of having a general plan, they just did it weapon-by-weapon on a case-by-case scenario, probably with multiple different development staff working on each case individually especially as new weapons came out or updates changed the mechanics of old ones.
I'm not saying a 4 hour video essay on the Shove would make for a good April Fool's video, but the title "The Shortstop's Shove, the best ability you never knew about and here's why" speaks for itself
The music at the start of the video(NOT THE INTRO!) is "Marable garden act 1" from Sonic the hedgehog 3. I have a feeling that i played sonic 3 a little too much
I wonder if the reason some things are flipped for Bonk vs. Disguise is that hitting a disguised spy might count as dealing damage but not actually hitting something, while hitting a bonk scout counts as a hit but not damage, so some of the inconsistancy might be explained by some weapons proccing their effects when they deal damage and others when they register a hit.
Killtaunting the disguised Spy with the Übersaw giving 50% to Übercharge feels very clunky because it will happen maybe once when full moon shows up (too rare to be utilised properly)
taunt kills in general are very clunky and too rare to be utilized. Unless it's the huntsman taunt because of the extra range and how fast it goes unless your me where every enemy somehow just slides away anyway.
Spy bugs almost feel like 100% intentional, but realistically feels more like a 50/50. I know its been stated that they way spy works due to there being a bug with spy looking like he was on the other team. Probably the most unintentional bug was the weird corpse that would spawn after the deadringer was triggered, like how it left a massive clue but I think most people didnt even notice it and spies where still able to get away with stuff. Also, if you want to have a bit of an easier time trying to find deadringer spies, melee/crit hit one, a ragdoll will spawn but the spy's scream is still attached to the player, sorry to anyone that doesnt have ears
Honestly, I don't really understand how Spy and his disguises are even still viable in current day TF2. Ignoring aimbots and obvious cheaters (I've started encountering cheaters more than bots), the general greeting in TF2 is a gunshot to spycheck. Yeah you've got your Mr. Paladins and trickstabbers, but in general, I'd argue Spy is the least viable class. Someone who has a vaguely deeper understanding of how TF2's code works, the FaN knockback probably *isn't* intentional, since - while I haven't checked - I'm assuming that the knockback attribute means every shot *forces* a player back slightly, and that is just amplified by base damage knockback. I could be wrong. The Shortstop shove shouldn't change knockback based on disguise because the Shortstop's shove if memory serves correctly is *literally* mechanically just toned-down airblast, it works the same. ...I kinda wish you could shove projectiles now.

6:48 then medic has litterally no counter to spy when equiping the crossbow. its too risky to go into melee when the spy can just fucking face stab you. i HEAVILY disagree. But the l'etranger and vita-saw seem to get flat gains on hit but still trigger so that breaks the rule
and Baby Face and Widowmaker do their effects how much on damage dealt so that probably breaks the rule
wouldn't surprise me if they have several different (on hit) functions lol
i havent played a LOT of tf2.... and i kinda suck at it
.
but ive always felt that people see the speed differences
like if im a spy.... and pick scout to disguise as.... i dont THINK i run as fast as a normal scout
.
and the good players notice this slow ass scout.... and shoot me dead
6:48 then medic has litterally no counter to spy when equiping the crossbow. its too risky to go into melee when the spy can just fucking face stab you. i HEAVILY disagree. If the spy didnt have the ability to face stab, then MAYBE. But the ability for a medic to potentially grief their own team even more is pretty shitty, even if by accident.
