Thank you very much. This is the best explanation I've found. Built my own cable today and I'm finally able to use all my Baofeng Radios on Chirp on my Mac! Been struggling with it for almost a year. Cheers from Brazil!
on Mac, my system pref security general is not giving me the message chat chirp will not open and thus not giving me the option to "open anyway" any thoughts?
Please help. I have a Mac running OS Big Sur version 11.4. I have Chirp loaded, but when opened, it just displays a "blank" screen. Have tried the entire download and set-up process several times, but still no go. When you have a moment are there any suggestions? Hoping to program a GT-5R. Thank you very much.
Mine displays a blank screen to start as well, but it might not be the same blank screen - when you have it opened, can you go to the Radio menu at the top of your screen and select download?
I agree it’s the best explanation of using Mac with CHIRP... however, could you help me with my Yaesu FT65 using Mac? I got the SCU-35 cable. Man, that would be awesome!
As far as I know, you'll get a message that the whole works is in developmental mode and to continue at your own risk... but we are hams, that's what we do! Was there a specific problem with it?
@@temporarilyoffline ... Yaesu FT 65 is not supported by CHIRP. It says it does, but I can’t get to CHIRP, I might be doing something wrong, a newbie on this really... it could be the cable. I noted that there are issues on programming FT65 with CHIRP. Thanks for any input on FT65 with CHIRP.
@@raeqllaguno5451 Did you make your own cable? Either way, two very common issues are the cable isn't fully plugged into the radio... or the TX/RX on the cable isn't properly reversed.
HELP! I have followed the instruction, made the cables, everything seemed to work. I was able to download my UV-5R memory and save the file, but when I go to upload into the radio the "Upload to Radio" option on the pull down menu is grayed out..... you can't select it. I have double-checked my cable, all good. I was trying to upload a new set of frequencies from one of the options in the CHIRP program, RepeaterBook. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Since you were able to download from the radio, you're over 90% of the hurdles! Couple of things to check: 1. Is the cable in all the way, really drive it home! and 2. Check your TX path from the FTDI board, make sure you don't have a loose wire or solder joint. Let me know.
@@temporarilyoffline Thank you for your reply. So, I got it to work, but it was not slick. Using the feature in the CHIRP software, I had downloaded all 2M repeaters within a 100 mile radius (84 total) from "RepeaterBook". From that RepeaterBook tab (file) in CHIRP, "Upload to Radio" was not an option (it was grayed out). So, I "Downloaded from Radio" and that created a second tab in CHIRP. I went back to the RepeaterBook tab with the 84 memories in it, did a "Select All", then "Copy". Then I went back to the second tab created by downloading from my radio and pasted the contents from the RepeaterBook tab. The copy and paste appeared to work. From my radio's tab in CHIRP, that had just had the 84 memories pasted into it, the "Upload to Radio" was a valid option (not grayed out). I clicked "Upload to Radio" and it worked. They appear to all be in there. Any file I create by "Downloading from Radio", and save to my computer, I cannot open. If I double click the file, or try to open from within CHIRP, it is not recognized.....?!?! What that amounts to is I cannot have "canned" files to use in different locations (one for Florida and one for California, for instance). Might be as simple as changing the extension on the file name or something..... Would love to hear your thoughts. MacBook Pro, running Catalina 10.15.1.
Step 1 I just downloaded the latest chirp (2020-10-14), downloaded from radio, imported all repeaters in a 50mi radius from repeaterbook, removed duplicates and blanks, uploaded to radio. The only thing that I noted was that the upload to radio dialog that popped up was all grayed out, but it worked anyway. That might be because the file was only for the radio attached, so selecting another radio wasn't an option. Step 2 - saved file to disk (.img extension), closed app, opened app, opened file, uploaded to radio worked. Step 3 - grabbed repeaters from a busier area, opened a new tab in chirp, could NOT save to radio from that tab. I had to copy and paste from new tab to radio tab. From there I could save those in a new file and load and switch between the two files. Here are my thoughts: 1. Grab the latest version of Chirp 2. Pay attention to the tabs at the top and make sure it says "Radio Model: Filename" or "RepeaterBook(/whatever)" 3. Make sure your saved files end in ".img", probably can't double click on that file name. (My system thinks its a disk image) I did have to copy/paste from RB to radio tab, wiping out my imported radio settings... file-save as-new name and I had old-name.img and new-name.img I could swap between. Hope that helps!
@@temporarilyoffline Thank you!! Sounds like you did it the way I did; copy and paste into one of the radio's existing files...... EXCEPT, you can do a "save as" and re-open it from within the application. I will try and save the file like you did and see if I get lucky.... thank you for your help, I will report back.
I am running Big Sur 11.6 and still having trouble and it is quitting when I try and open it. Dose anyone have any suggestions on how to get CHIRP to work?
I just tested out on 10.15.7. It now asks "twice" - download, extract, copy to app folder, run application (FIRST ASK), system preferences -> security -> general tab -> Open Anway, (SECOND ASK), Open Anyway and there it is. Its a pain, not sure why it asks you twice considering the barrier you had to go through to get the first one answered.

Hello Louis - See if this helps: 1. Try to open chirp (and get blocked) 2. Open up System Preferences 3. Open up Security and Privacy 4. Make sure you're on the general tab 5. At the bottom of that page should be something along the lines of "we don't trust this app and we've blocked it, click here to open anyway" 6.
