    Chirp will let you have multiple tabs open at once so you can copy and paste the contents/items from 1 radio into another. A quick tip when you download the repeater list put it in a separate tab and use the copy/paste function to move it over so you don't accidentally overwrite the memories in you radio. It also has a few premade requency list for like the NOAA Weather, National calling frequencies ect.

    For those of you who are having chronic problems getting your FT-60 (maybe any radio, I don't know) to work with Chirp:
    With the programming cable plugged into a USB port:
    Go into your computer's device manger and double click on the Prolific (or whatever device your programming cable has) device.
    Go to the Power Management tab and turn off "allow computer to turn off this device to save power..."
    This solved my problem and now I can consistently upload from Chirp to my FT-60.

    So I have myself a cable that works, I think, it was still in the plastic. WIN 10 recognizes it as Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (Com 3). Then, following instructions, I Turned off the radio. Held Down the 3 key and turned on the radio. The number is BFB298. Chirp says I'm only good to 296. The radio is a weirdo. It is labeled UV-5R (Baofeng) but it is an 8 watt version. Not labeled anything else but UV-5R anywhere including under the battery which is a double-sized battery and adds height to the unit -- fitting nicely on the back AND underneath the radio which makes it taller than the usual UV-5R. I have a regular old UV-5R too and I think its possible this cable came with that one which I have had for 4-5 years. I've had this 8 watt version for at least a year, and since then BAOFENG has come out with several 8 watt H-T's but NONE of them numbered UV-5R. So I have this feeling I am stuck between a rock and a hard place until I figure out how to deal with being-off-by-3-numbers. I can't remember if its a firmware thing or driver number or what, I just followed Mr. M's page (Miklor.com) until I got to this "snag." Any info you can shed on this predicament greatly appreciated. Afraid to move forward until I understand why my BFB298 is three numbers too high and what that means. Thanks, 73 Dave N9DMS Naperville, IL

    Chirp works more reliably (flawlessy?) under linux. Linux has a lot - a lot - of free Amateur radio software that can come bundled in one package. Linux, such as Ubuntu, is free to use, easy to install (about 10 minutes) and can sit next to Windows on your hard drive (you have a choice when booting which OS you want to choose). It also runs extremely well on old computers/laptops and newer laptops and netbooks making it great for field work. 73's M7AGG

    You ought to do something like the old Saturday morning TV show, Watch Mr. Wizard, where you have someone who is new the amateur radio and talk them through the process and maybe do tests and experiments. I bet you'd find areas where you think it's a logical step but would confuse someone new. Pros are a little blind to how a newbie thinks and that's why I think going the Mr. Wizard route would work great. Not that your video isn't already very good.
    I used to sell cameras and over time I found that I was talking over their heads so I made the effort to slow down and explain step by step what I was talking about and why a feature would benefit them or not..

My issue is that Chirp will not allow me to populate ToneSql, DTCS Code, DTCS Pol, Cross Mode, Duplex, fields in chirp. I am not sure if the lack of data is the cause of my performance issue. (haven't been able to recieve anything). I see the fields populated in your example of chirp, I assume I should also be able to populate the data but I cant. It can only operate on one "codeplug" at a time. Saving a codeplug intended for your radio will enable you to upload it again later, provided you "save as new" before editing. In this manner you can have several different environments at your disposal within a few minutes of reuploading a different codeplug.

    We have 5 wouxun KG-UV3D for the family and I program them for LA area Repeaters. Now we move to Utah Saint George, since I can't find the cable or de Software I use so we can't use them. CHIRP Radio Menu available have no KG UV3D and none of the others work. The cable a bought is the correct one and the mini-cd software and manual are use less. Do you or some one have information of how to reset to factory the radios. The regular way MENU-key won't work since is set to program.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  6 лет назад +1

      The power level for most VHF/UHF handhelds and mobiles is not continuously variable. You have to pick from one of the preprogrammed levels, usually high and low, and in some cases there are intermediate levels. There should be a column in CHIRP for the power level.

    There's a whole thing against Baofeng radios now, from the FCC. Apparently, Amcrest Industries, which runs Baofeng Radio US, is in violation of FCC's Part 90 restriction. Part 90 dictates that radios can only max out at 1.78W and Baofengs support double that, at 4W. In fact, my UV-5R variant boasts a whopping 8 watt power range. Long story short, I couldn't get CHIRP to work recently. I had it working before but I think CHIRP cut out Baofeng support for the previous reasons.

      Check the ARRL Repeater Directory ($$) or just Google for repeaters in your area. Be aware that lots of repeaters are there only on paper. Plug the frequencies into your radio, then let it scan. The active repeaters will show themselves pretty quickly.
