So, at 66 I am dipping my toes into HAM radio and starting on the path to getting my Tech license. This video was very easy to follow for someone like me that has never touched a HAM radio before. Many thanks for this video it made programing my new radio painless and the CHIRP program is so much easier than trying to use the radio keypad.
I'm really impressed with this video, we tend to think everyone knows all the computer shortcut, like "ctrl c" and "ctrl v" and shift click or ctrl click. I love how you explained every small detail, I'm positive the non- computer savvy people really appreciate it. Well done Josh, excellent video as always. 73, KW4LU
I know right. This has been the BEST video I've watched to teach us newbies how to program our radios. Hopefully he can show us how it would work on a Mac. There is also a device I seen that you can plug into your phone and program. Please review that too.
Thank you for this! Especially the hint about turning duplex to "off." So many throw an absolute fit about Baofengs "because they can be set to transmit out of amateur bands." Well, number 1 - just because the machine can do something that breaks the rules doesn't mean it should be held accountable. I wonder how many of these fudds, lids, and sad hams would blame cars for drunk driving fatalities, guns for murders, and spoons for fatness?! No! It is the person using them the wrong way, not the object itself. And just because out of band frequencies can be programmed doesn't mean they shouldn't be. Be responsible! Turn the duplex to "off!" Think back to your tech quiz! YOU are responsible for your station! Same way YOU are responsible for your car! Just because you "are afraid to drive" (aka, use a Baofeng) doesn't mean you get to dictate that I shouldn't be able to use one when I can use it responsibly and not transmit outside my band privileges! Also, remember, it isn't against any rule to listen to anything over the radio! What gets people into trouble is TXing!
The Bao, because of it's useful properties, is great in a SHTF scenario when you can choose from multiple modes of communication. Don't bash the Bao, embrace it.
The same thing can be said for our Second Amendment right just because you have a gun doesn't mean you can handle that gun irresponsible you're the one responsible for the gun not just the gun Common Sense will tell you again doesn't have a mind of its own it's the person that's operating it the same way with our radios we don't go out of band and transmit when we're not license for it we can like you say however listen to it it's okay to do that irresponsible
Absolutely! It's hard to beat a 20 dollar HT. My old UV-5r died; so I just ordered another one so I can back into ham radio. Apparently the current models are limited to TX on the ham bands. But you can jailbreak them for general TX. I like that it requires deliberate effort to TX out of band. Maybe this will keep people from using these for MURS, FRS ETC. But like you said it's the responsibility of the individual not the radio.
Another NOOB just getting started by exploring anything ‘HAM’ radios, accessories, DOs and DONT’s and finding it fairly overwhelming. This and a few other videos, yours and others, are gold mines full of nuggets for us. This is perhaps the most complicated part .. got a new radio .. now what. One step, one video, one new piece of information at a time. Thanks for the assist.
Thank you Josh! Study for my T- test now... just received my GMRS license. Just received my WOUXUN KG-UV 9D plus and starting my journey in Amateur Radio in retirement after having a radio on my hip for my whole career. You're amazing teacher THANK YOU SIR! WHISKEY SIERRA ALPHA WHISKEY 777...
This may be the most helpful video in the history of RUclips. Thank you Josh! Followed your instructions and (with zero chirp experience) programmed my new uv9d mate. Well done!
Great video...studying for my Tech but wanted to get hands-on listening on my radio. Watched your video...took a lot of the anxiety of trying to program my radio. Pulled in Noaa...FRS and GMRS (duplex off) and local repeaters.....then flashed a second radio with same profile. Super Easy!
Wow this is what a newbie (like me) needs to get started! I got my Technician license last week and have met with a few club members . One of them suggested just play with your radio and figure it out. Easier said than done. I feel confident after watching your video and downloading CHIRP and playing with it. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward, with confidence, to experience my Ham!
Very well done video! Having been around radios and scanners my whole life first working for the fire department and then getting into law enforcement for a total of just shy of 30 years before retiring I know this isn't necessarily rocket science but for some people just getting into these areas that sure helps to see a very well done and easy to understand video like yours. I watched your video because you were dealing with Chirp Next. I have been getting away with the Legacy version of Chirp for several years now but I just bought the new Baofeng AR-5RM as seen on NotaRubicon. As luck would have it Chirp Next will not work on my old laptop, which is 32-bit. Of course Legacy is not updated so none of the newer radios show up in that version. I ordered a new PC which should get here in 2 days and then I will load Chirp Next and be ready to rock and roll. You helped me get an idea of some of the minor differences between the Legacy version and Next. Thanks for the info!
Thanks for the updated version. There was only one thing I didn’t see it was the FM frequency programming option. Everything else worked the same. Thank you Dad for his service to our country. USAF Vietnam Veteran 🇺🇸
Thank you, Josh. This was one of the most well-presented RUclips videos I've seen. You made the information clear and easy to understand, particularly for the new ham user. Your sequencing was logical, personal, and surgically on target. You emphasized and repeated as necessary the most important information as you proceeded through the video, keeping the viewer fully engaged in the process being described. You maintained a consistent empathetic register without lapsing into techspeak. An outstanding presentation. Thanks, again, and keep it up.
One thing I miss with the new version is the ability to import an already existing profile. I do like that I can now filter for both 2 meter and 70cm instead of having to query them separately. I also like the fact I can now query for only repeaters with FM mode and filter out the digital modes. Although I did notice that it may still omit repeaters that you can use analog FM while digital modes are also being used. My club's 70cm repeater is capable of Fusion and WIRES, but you can still transmit using analog FM while someone is transmitting digital.
...what a great video, Josh! ...i use CHIRP exclusively to program my BTECH UV-5x3...hadn't used CHIRP-next yet, but glad i watched this first...this will be SO much easier! ...will pass this video to others...your visuals and explanations were exactly what the "doctor ordered" to remove the confusion and mystery! Thank you so much!!! 73! AJ4D
Josh, well done! That was easy to follow and you greatly simplified this step for me. I'm now subscribed and have given you a thumbs-up! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
I like the new version of Chirp. I have RT systems on some of my units but Chirp works well. I sometime become the guy that programs the Newbie's HT. I usually set it up so they have all the same repeaters in the same location on the unit as everyone else. Makes it easier to explain what channel to change to. I also like to use it to program by Kenwood TH-F6A. the program Kewnood provides is really out of date for doing that. Always enjoy your videos. 73
Hey Don. Been seeing you all over the place as I dive head first into radios. Going to start programming tonight. Hope you’re doing well. (I know you from locks before)
Thank you, Josh, for this comprehensive video. I got such a lot of questions answered, and learned how to use functions I had not even known they existed. (I even learned there is Orange County in CA AND in FL.) I am German so please excuse my English. You covered every aspects from finding, installing, und using chirp without repeating yourself - not a dull monent in your video. Vy 73, Jürgen
I just got my technician license this week and I was watching your older video for everything Baofeng, and was discouraged when chirp didn't act the way you showed. This one cleared up my frustration due to ignorance of the new program.
I just downloaded chirp next about a weak ago. works great on windows 11. no problems .easy install /replace old version. some GMRS radios not listed . but for the HT's I have it program's great.I have outher software for my outher HT. both work on windows 11 but not run at same time. just what I do, I got the cables for 2 BaoFeng to make repeater. solved the RF overload. small duplexer . works super . GMRS repeater portable . all fit in ammo box . and the roger beep is on. make Randy happy. 73's
Great job Josh! Thanks for sharing this information. I like this new version of CHIRP. I finally took the dive into the Baofeng world and programmed the radio while watching this video.
Thank you for making this video because before when I was using chirp it was by the seat of my pants I learned now I have little bit more control and how to make my radio work better thank you again great video
Thank you for this video. One issue I encountered that may not have been emphasized enough is that if you do the programming and your radio does not accept programming - check the programming cable plug into the side of the radio and make sure it is plugged in securely as it can be difficult to determine if it is connected properly and this will prevent the radio from accepting programming.
Great video, as usual. I ordered the 7-in-1 cable you suggested because I have three radios I want to program. I've always used the manual programing method, but I can't stand the pain anymore and will begin using CHIRP. Thanks again.
Great video, I upgraded my previous Chirp to the Next version, works great, I have 3 UV-5R's , I updated each one's settings and memories no problems. I edited the "Display Message" to a unique name so the radio's can be identified when turned on. as well as when downloading the radio's profiles. Have a great day
Great Video Josh!! Something I always do, in case I make an error, is to ALWAYS save the original or last programmed codeplug file. That way you can always go back to the previous program/codeplug if all else fails.
Great Video. I just updated to Chirp next. I am now working on updating my programing adding/updating the local repeaters ect. Here is a suggestion for a video although it may take a new tool. Plotting the local repeaters on a map or pulling your programmed repeaters into a mapping tool so that you can have a paper map of the repeaters in your radio. Uses would be Cells down or no service, planning a road trip. There are times it would be good to see visually. Since the repeater book filter do appear to be by distance it would be good to have a way to see. I found that if I look each repeater up on the repeater book app the grid square is there the data is available I just do not see a way to export it and then plot it. I do love your content. Thank you 73 Doug KE8OWD
Wow at how Jam Packed this Video Is ON Chrip Bro you rock I didn't even know you could copy or paste let alone Know you could Use RepeaterBook by location and Already listed Records 14:44
I Love your show. How about doing some demos with/on a MAC. I will be trying the 'new" Chirp very soon and loved the info. "73"s. I would love to chat with you sometime "on the air". Have a good one.
thank you so much! I don't know, if you know but, I couldn't find My Baofeng BF-F8TD in the "model" drop box in the Chirp Radio file. So, I just used UV5R. Someone said the BFF8td, was an upgraded radio. but still a UV5R. it seemed to work. it uploaded my choices in the repeater book. not when I get my FCC Lic. I need to talk and test it all out. that apparently will be the real test if I programmed it right. lol! Thank you for this vid!
Great video, good for new users. The only thing I don't agree with is turning the volume all the way up. The volume has no effect on programming. If someone is having problems they may waste their time messing with volume control.
Thank you for this video, since Chirp eliminated the “import from data source” option, it was quite difficult for me to achieve this particular task, again, thanks a lot for this video.
OK, just happened to run across your Channel a little qwhile ago and this sounds way eaier than the other way and having to do a lot of searching for things!
Yeah, the thought of GMRS and NOAA special ops kicking down my door gives me shivers. This is why I am not so fond of my HAM brothers & sisters (mostly brothers) - the pretentious people. That being said, thanks for the tour, very informative!
Chirp next also has settings for my radios that the OEM and their software has left out!!! That settled things for me as to which software I'll be using to program my radios.
excellent video. I just started playing around with CHIRP next assuming it would be straightforward, however, I had several lists of frequencies etc that were in excel. Tried copy paste, tried changing to csv files everything I could think of to import and just never figured out how. Not liking the thought of having to manually enter lol
Hey, just getting started in HAM at 69. This video was great and I programmed my two type Boafengs (UV-5R & BF-F8HP) without problems. But, using the new NEXT CHIRP I found that it did not allow me to add my favorite FM Station as you did. That line only has a checkmark box. I'm guessing I need to manually add via keypad? Thanks again for all your videos!
Clicking download to save this for later use will take you to a subscription service, however, there are three dots, open the dots. There is a free save tab. You can get the free method without a subscription. You can figure out how to load it yourself.
Because many of you will want to add your custom frequencies and CHIRP doesn't help with its default settings, you can go to View-> Hide empty memories and untick it.
5:55 You say you have blown up your radio ... you haven't that will occur when you write that 'null' file to the radio. OK call me a smart arse 🙂 Excellent video btw.
As a noob, is there a video you’ve done that explains what each section of chirp means and how it affects the radio? It’s all new terms for guys like me and I would like a deeper dive.
Awesome, thank you!!! Made the job much easier! I only have one hiccup. The freq and name do not display together. As I switch through channels, the "2M CALL" remains in place below. I can change from "A" to "B" and switch through names, but the freq above stays on the last freq i was on before switching to "B". Any tips on what I might be doing wrong? I'm so new to the Amateur radio world. I JUST received my Call Sign Monday morning. KJ5EXU! I'm ready to start learning more! thank you. Update. I rewatched the ending where you were cycling through the names, also on "B" and you're frequencies didn't appear to be changing either. Perhaps the frequency is changing under the guise of the repeater name, but "A" isn't changing?
Good video. I just had to modify my 5R and got my first taste of NEXT. I had a real dumba** attack for like 5 minutes (3:04) when the get File menu or Radio menu page came up. I tried clicking everywhere and nothing till I figured out it meant the top of the page. They could have put two boxes next to the CHIRP logo lol Other than that, it works nice. Here's a msg for manufacturers. The radio's have PTT-ID on transmit-fine. Now make a radio that can read it like my Motorola does. Wouldn't it be neat to see who's talking on the display?
I would not discourage folks from putting MURS, orGMRS/FRS on their Ham radio. They must understand however that they should change antennas to one that will provide an acceptably low SWR for the frequencies that they will be working. I make my own and tune them to perfection, but these are not as nice to carry as are commercially made antennas. One needs to use an SWR meter and check all antennas they use. I've ditched commercial antennas.
Question: my son does fishing tournaments on Lake Mohave and we picked up a couple of radios for emergencies or simply a way to get/give updates on the water. We are planning on going through the official certification but my question is: is it possible in lake Mohave (for you experienced people) to be able to communicate across the lake? Right now cell phones are spotty. Are there towers around the lake that would allow for communication from Katherine landing all the way up to cottonwood? Would any of you be willing to help me set it up if there is? I just want a backup emergency option for him in the boat. As you know Mohave can get nasty at times and he is often out on it by himself.
Nice! I haven't really done anything with ham radio since moving to Las Vegas a couple of years ago. I just ordered a UV-5r and programming cable so I can get back into it. I have rigs on my dest but I still need to get antenna up and all that jazz. A 20 dollar HT will get me on the air until the shack and antenna farm is up and running. I was planning on using Chirp. I am going to give this new version a try. Thanks for the video. 73 DE KK6FVP
I should add that I like that you can program FM broadcast frequencies. One of the features I like about the Baofengs is FM broadcast reception. That was one feature I wish my Yaesu FT-60 had.
Thanks for the video, very concise and helpful. BTW I keep getting an error message whenever I try to insert a frequency under the settings panel. Program lists 1 through 20 FM channels, in the second column, I try to input a local FM broadcast station, although the pgm will not allow the input, stating the value must be between 0 and 5 characters. Might you have any suggestions?
Great video, I purchased a Baofeng CH-6DMR/DM1706 from a Prepper Channel. I am a beginner and thought Chirp would be able to program it. It would not so I lost around 100 bucks, and the brand new radio is just sitting on my desk. Would you know what software to use for this radio? Thx!
A great resource video for this topic! I wish my brain would just remember how to do this, but it wont. So, consequently, I have gone back to this video many times. And it seems I learn new information each time! Thanks for this well done video and all the best to you and your most excellent subscribers. AG7UW..
8:36 You definitely want to transmit on the NOAA Frequencies so you can tell them they're full of crap when it's 🌧️ raining freezing 🥶 or otherwise completely opposite than what they're saying... 😜
Tables have turned and now its a Nightmare to install on Linux Ironically. The required Python changes can ruin your entire installation. I have to stick to the legacy Chirp...Maybe a Chirp-Next Flatpak or Appimage in the near future. Or when I upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 or higher. I dont wanna mess with my current Python install.
I don't want to make fun of Baofeng users, because I just got two for free (almost) from Amazon. I got two identical UV-5R8Ws. So I won't make fun of you guys anymore. But now please don't make fun of me for still having an Advanced class license (thank you) so now we're even. Didn't even need the user manual to figure out how to use it except for some of the obscure and non-self-explanatory menu settings. They are okay for the money, good to have for an emergency and it's easy to add new channels, simplex or repeater just on the keyboard. Very simple operating procedues compared to real Ham HTs.
I liked your video but had a question. When you import from Repeaterbook the entries are in random order in terms of frequency. Is there a way to sort by frequency so I can have them in order like 145.124,145.225, 146,125.... as opposed to jumping all over the band?
Fantastic video and thank you for putting it out there. One issue with mine is the channel name display on display mode 2. Its set in chirp and the radio as well on menu 22. Not a big deal overall. Its a $25 radio. I appreciate the content you make and all you do for the radio community. edit: found that switching around the frequency to display on B and the name on A worked for me.
I've tried many things (switching Name on A, freq on B ... or freq on A, Name on B) but I'm convinced my A is broken. Too bad. I even reset the radio and tried again with the same result. Time for another Boafeng, I guess.
Some great info here on the new Chirp. It now supports my Quansheng, which also comes with the Silicon Labs cable, this is great news, as I had lost interest in the Qaunsheng radio. I did notice that when I go to File menu to open "Stock configs directory it is empty, and contains no data. I was interested to note how the csv files are formatted. In reality, it appears that the "stock config" folder is stored in a different place. C:\Program files(X86)\Chirp\Chirp I was curious as to what " Enable Automatic edits" is ticked by default, and what it's function is? Keep up the good work..

Is any of this information applicable to 'Baofeng Ham Radio' users in Britain?
Still no answer, lads? Do you know the answer?
I take it that neither of you have any intention of answering my question?

Great video, I upgraded my previous Chirp to the Next version, works great, I have 3 UV-5R's , I updated each one's settings and memories no problems. I edited the "Display Message" to a unique name so the radio's can be identified when turned on. as well as when downloading the radio's profiles.
Have a great day
I don't know how to use one but these will come in handy to have during the civil war.
Great Video Josh!! Something I always do, in case I make an error, is to ALWAYS save the original or last programmed codeplug file. That way you can always go back to the previous program/codeplug if all else fails.
The new version that I loaded today has a built-in port finder!
Indeed a good feature! But still learn how to find your own port.
This video is underrated, give this man his dues!
Getting started into the ham radio in a few days (Christmas) and this is so helpful. Thank you!
Thank you

Never mind I found it on the repeater book website that is what i get for trusting my phone. (Wait that is why i want a hard copy in the first place)
Wow at how Jam Packed this Video Is ON Chrip Bro you rock I didn't even know you could copy or paste let alone Know you could Use RepeaterBook by location and Already listed Records 14:44
Glad I could help!
ALWAYS great information. Thanks for your time 😀😀
Thanks, you've shown a few more techniques that I wasn't aware of!
I Love your show. How about doing some demos with/on a MAC. I will be trying the 'new" Chirp very soon and loved the info. "73"s. I would love to chat with you sometime "on the air". Have a good one.
It’s the same basic process. I don’t think it needs another video.
Just bought 2 fengs and have some old wouxuns too. This sounds dope
Thanks! This video made programming my Icom so much easier and saved me a lot of time!✌️
Great walk through of the process, thanks
and btw me and erci have subscribed and he has watched all of your videos over and over
thank you so much!
Thanks for this video @HamRadioCrashCourse - saved a lot of time in getting up to speed on CHIRP Next!
Glad it helped! You're welcome!
I haven't even watched this video yet but I subscribed last month and I'm so glad that I did!!
Great video, good for new users. The only thing I don't agree with is turning the volume all the way up. The volume has no effect on programming. If someone is having problems they may waste their time messing with volume control.
Chirp next also allows printing a paper copy of the file , good video josh
Thanks so much for all the information
This is the best video explaining how this works. Thank you so much
A great program even better. Well explained, thanks.
Thank you for this video, since Chirp eliminated the “import from data source” option, it was quite difficult for me to achieve this particular task, again, thanks a lot for this video.
I actually got CHIRP to work last night. Wish I’d seen this video first though.
Greatly appreciate it sir. Good video! Now to explore what I can do with this program! 73's! WSAT505.
Josh - a very helpful video. Thank you!
Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video
OK, just happened to run across your Channel a little qwhile ago and this sounds way eaier than the other way and having to do a lot of searching for things!
Thank you! Very clear, easy to understand and helpful; you’re a great teacher
Sweet! Just ordered my gt5r and HAM test prep book!
EXCELLENT video! Thanks so much for posting, & for your easily understood explanation...
Yeah, the thought of GMRS and NOAA special ops kicking down my door gives me shivers. This is why I am not so fond of my HAM brothers & sisters (mostly brothers) - the pretentious people. That being said, thanks for the tour, very informative!
Sorry the joke flew over your head.
Awesome tutorial! You're a natural.
I think anyone can take any basic spreadsheet tutorial and will have a very good handle on Chirp new.
Thank you!!! You've made it very easy to understand!!
Chirp next also has settings for my radios that the OEM and their software has left out!!! That settled things for me as to which software I'll be using to program my radios.
That was a great video Josh, well explained!!! You are an asset to Amateur Radio with your videos. Thank you & 73!! KN6STX
Wow, thanks!
excellent video. I just started playing around with CHIRP next assuming it would be straightforward, however, I had several lists of frequencies etc that were in excel. Tried copy paste, tried changing to csv files everything I could think of to import and just never figured out how. Not liking the thought of having to manually enter lol
Excellent video...we needed an update.
Thank you!
If you have a Baofeng UV5G Plus then you have to select GM-5RH or else you get a notice that it can’t read the radio
Excellent Tutorial, thank you very much!
This is an outstanding video. Thanks!!
Because many of you will want to add your custom frequencies and CHIRP doesn't help with its default settings, you can go to View-> Hide empty memories and untick it.
Fantastic tutorial....your great....thanks from Barry...Powell River BC CANADA
Thanks for watching!
5:55 You say you have blown up your radio ... you haven't that will occur when you write that 'null' file to the radio. OK call me a smart arse 🙂 Excellent video btw.
I now have chirp next, on Windows 10. Now I have to get time to play.
Perhaps the frequency is changing under the guise of the repeater name, but "A" isn't changing?
yeah! It's better, but I had a hell of a time to make it work in windows 11!!! love your ham-vids. The best from LB1NH inn Oslo Norway! 🙂
Good video. I just had to modify my 5R and got my first taste of NEXT. I had a real dumba** attack for like 5 minutes (3:04) when the get File menu or Radio menu page came up. I tried clicking everywhere and nothing till I figured out it meant the top of the page. They could have put two boxes next to the CHIRP logo lol
Other than that, it works nice.

Hah! I wish!
Great detailed instructions. Thank you!
Very nice, just learned a lot from you sir.

Thanks, Josh - great work.
Thx!
thank you helped me program my talkpod
A great resource video for this topic! I wish my brain would just remember how to do this, but it wont. So, consequently, I have gone back to this video many times. And it seems I learn new information each time! Thanks for this well done video and all the best to you and your most excellent subscribers. AG7UW..
the FACTORY RESET function is a good thing ! Used it many times until I figured this out.
8:36 You definitely want to transmit on the NOAA Frequencies so you can tell them they're full of crap when it's 🌧️ raining freezing 🥶 or otherwise completely opposite than what they're saying... 😜
Thanks for this, now I know where I am going !!
C:\Program files(X86)\Chirp\Chirp
I was curious as to what " Enable Automatic edits" is ticked by default, and what it's function is?
Keep up the good work..
